Before leaving home, all students must find out about the Italian laws governing residence in Italy. Students who are citizens of a country of the European Union (EU), as well as citizens of Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Andorra, the Principality of Monaco, Republic of San Marino and the Vatican City, can freely travel and stay in Italy for up to a maximum of three months. Students with EU citizenship Exchange students and students enrolled in single course units Exchange students (Erasmus or other programmes) who will be staying in Italy for more than 3 months but in any case temporarily can stay in Italy without any formalities; they only need to have an identity document valid for foreign travel.live and study in: Bologna, Cesena, Forlì, Rimini or Ravenna. Students with non-EU citizenship Exchange students Information and procedures for exchange students with non-EU citizenship: Non-EU exchange students who intend to stay in Italy for more than 90 days must apply for an entry visa for study purposes. For stays of up to 90 days, the entry visa may or may not be necessary, depending on your country of origin. To find out whether an entry visa is required and what documentation is required to apply for one, consult the Italian Government website: versione in italiano or English version (select for purpose of the visa: "STUDIO – borse di studio"). In any case you must contact your nearest Italian Consulate or Embassy in your home country; you are advised to do so well in advance. If before leaving students purchase health insurance in their own country, they should take this with them to the consulate together with the other documents required for obtaining a visa and make sure that the consulate stamps the insurance policy to certify its validity. Without the stamp of the consulate, once they arrive in Italy students may be obliged to purchase another policy, as foreign insurance not validated by the consulate is not acceptable for obtaining the residence permit. Fees for the processing of visa applications (expressed in Euro): Short stay Schengen visa (type A and C): € 60 € 35 (children from the age of 6 years and below the age of 12 years) Long stay National visa (type D) € 116 According to the existing Visa Facilitation Agreements with the EU, the visa fee for Schengen visa (type A and C) is reduced to 35 euro for nationals of the following Countries: Georgia, Moldova, Russian Federation and Ukraine. The same visa fee is required for nationals of Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, FYROM, Montenegro and Serbia who do not hold a biometric passport (holders of biometric passports are exempted from the visa requirement). The following categories of third country applicants are exempt from payment of the visa application fee: - children under the age of 6 years (short stay); - relatives up to the fourth degree of kin of EU and Swiss citizens; - students (short and long stay); - school pupils, students, postgraduate students and accompanying teachers who undertake stays for the purpose of study or educational training (short stay); - researchers as defined by recommendation 2005/761/EC of 28.09.2005; - some categories of beneficiaries envisaged by EU Visa Facilitation Agreement. Fees are collected in the national currency of the country in which the application is introduced On arrival in Italy: declaration of presence and residence permit (permesso di soggiorno) Declaration of presence for stays of less than 90 days Non-EU exchange students intending to stay in Italy for less than 90 days must present a declaration of presence (they do not need to apply for a residence permit). For students coming to Italy from a country that has not signed the Schengen agreement, the uniform Schengen stamp, placed on the passport during border controls, replaces the declaration of presence. Students entering Italy transiting through a country from a country that has signed the Schengen agreement, must present the declaration of presence within 8 days of their entry into Italy to the Police Headquarters (Questura) in the Province they are domiciled in. For students staying in a hotel, the declaration of presence is represented by the declaration made to the hotelier and undersigned by the student. Students must always carry a copy of the declaration of presence, as they may be asked to show it by police and public safety officers. Residence permit for stays of more than 90 days Non-EU students intending to stay in Italy for more than 90 days must apply for a residence permit (permesso di soggiorno). Information on how to apply for a residence permit (permesso di soggiorno) Applying for residence permits with the support of the University of Bologna For exchange students Before filling in the application for the residence permit students must register with the International Relations office on their relative campus: Bologna, Cesena, Forlì,Ravenna, Rimini. At the time of registration the International Relations office will provide the documents that must be attached to the residence permit application and, if the student needs help, the office staff can provide assistance and information on the documents required to present the application correctly. Students domiciled in Bologna and the province can at the time of registration request an appointment with the staff of the Sportello Immigrazione ACLI for assistance in preparing the application for the residence permit. A copy of the residence permit, once it is issued, has to be submitted to the International Relations Office of students’ campus (by handing in, but also by sending via mail or email). If the copy is not provided, after 150 days from the arrival registration, students won’t be allowed to sit exams. Arrival registration The first thing to do when you arrive at the University of Bologna. As soon as you arrive at the University of Bologna you should go to the International Office of your city-campus (Bologna, Cesena, Forlì, Ravenna, Rimini) to do the registration: your grant will start according to the date of the registration. The official arrival or departure date that will appear on your documents can only be the date you show up at the office. Bring with you one passport size photo and a photocopy of your passport. You will get documents stating your arrival and a Welcome Kit with all you need to start your university life. If you need stamps on specific documents from your home university, bring them with you. Courses and learning agreement Information about choosing your courses and arranging and changing your Learning Agreement. After having reported your arrival and checked-in at the Incoming Office, you should go and see your exchange coordinator (the professor who is in charge of your exchange) to discuss your study plan. You may want to contact the International Office of the School as well to check the availability of the courses you would like to take. Generally, exchange students have no restrictions in their choice of courses, but some courses may not be available in your semester of stay, others may have restrictions (as is the case with some Master courses which are not available for Bachelor students) etc. The International Office of the School can help you with these issues. When the feasibility of your study plan has been confirmed, you will have to ask your exchange coordinator to sign your Learning Agreement. If you need a signature from the Institutional Erasmus Coordinator as well, you have to pass by the Incoming Office to get it. If at a later stage you need to change your study plan and Learning Agreement, you will have to agree upon the changes with your home university first. Your home university will provide you with the Changes-to-Learning-Agreement form which will have to be signed by your exchange coordinator as well. As you don’t have to register for lectures but just for the exams, you don’t have to make any other official changes here. You just have to put the new courses in your online study plan and then register for the exams as soon as the exam dates will be available. Attendance may be compulsory for some courses, elective for others. We highly recommend attending lectures either way. Please note that if your home university needs a certification of attendance you will have to arrange for this personally with the professor before classes start, as it will not be reported in the Transcript of Records. Grading system The Italian grading scale runs from 18 to 30-with-honours (30 e lode). Grades below 18 are not registered as they are a Fail which requires a re-sit of the exam. For some exams (laboratory or practical work and language proficiency exams mainly) there is no grade, but just a Pass/Fail result ("Idoneo"/"Non idoneo"). Please note that this type of result cannot be turned into a numerical grade. The Transcript of Records which you will receive at the end of your stay will contain an explanation of the Italian grading system together with an ECTS grading table which shows the percentage of students who have been given each grade over the past few years. This will help your home university to transpose each grade you received in their local grading system. 1 CFU (Credito Formativo Universitario) corresponds to 1 ECTS credit (25 hours of study of either teaching, independent study, examinations or tutorials or a combination of these). Credits can only be gained by passing exams or apprenticeship examinations. No credits will be given for the sole attendance of classes or for failed exams. The online study plan How to fill-in your study plan. One of the first things you have to do after arrival is fill in your online study plan (please see pdf). After having checked in at the Incoming Office your online study plan is automatically made available and can be accessed any time until July, at the end of the academic year. After having logged in you can pick the courses from the course list. To avoid mistakes, please check the course catalogue first and take note of the correct course codes, because different courses may have similar names. If you need more information on the courses you can contact the International Office of the School. The course list from which you can choose includes partial exams or "modules". These exams are part of a bigger "integrated exam". You may either choose singular modules or the entire integrated exam. Each module has its own exam code, and so does the integrated exam. For the integrated exam you just have to select that single code, but be aware that in that case you are obliged to take all the partial exams; otherwise the exam result (which is an average of the partial exams) cannot be registered. If you want to take singular modules, just select those and you will get single grade for each exam. Please be advised that this is a prerogative for exchange students. Regular students cannot get grades for the single modules. Some professors may not be aware of this, or may not yet be electronically enabled to register singular modules. Therefore it would be wise to contact the professor a few weeks before sitting the exam. If you need to make changes to your online study plan beyond July when access to the application will be shut down, you can contact the Incoming Office [email protected] Exams and transcript of records How to register for exams and get the exam results registered in your Transcript of Records. The exams you will have to take for your courses may either be set at the end of the course, at the end of the semester or may be split up in several small exams at intervals during the course. They may either be in oral or written form or through practical demonstration. The International Office of the School which your course belongs to can provide you with more information. AlmaEsami is the name of the online system through which students can sign in for exams and through which teachers can register the exam results. Please see the instructions sheet in the box on the right. You can log in to your personal AlmaEsami page with username and password to see when the exams are scheduled. AlmaEsami shows the courses you listed in your online study plan and on the same line a button with the word "Prenota" through which you can see the exam dates and register for them. If the "Prenota" button is missing, the exam has not been scheduled yet. (In that case the International Office of the School might give you an indication of the exam period, if needed.) In case of mistakes you can review and change you exam registrations. When you are going to sit the exam you will have to bring your "libretto" with you. This is an exam record sheet and functions as a back-up for the exam results. It is very important to have all the exam results registered by the professors on your "libretto". At the end of your exchange when checking-out at the Incoming Office you will have to hand it in. The university personnel of the Incoming Office will check instantly whether all the exam results mentioned on your libretto have been registered in AlmaEsami. If so, they will send the Transcript of Records to your home university immediately. If one or more registrations are missing in AlmaEsami, they will contact the professors to ask them to register the missing exam results in AlmaEsami. As soon as all the exam results will have been registered in AlmaEsami the Transcript of Records will be sent to your home university. We recommend checking a few weeks before the end of your exchange period if there any exam results missing in AlmaEsami and contact the professors if needed, in order to avoid delays with your Transcript of Records. The Transcript of Records lists all the exams and apprenticeships taken including the respective ECTS credits and grades. It also contains an explanation of the Italian grading system together with an ECTS grading table with the percentages of students who have received each specific grade. N.B. As a rule, exam results below 18 are not registered because they are regarded as insufficient and therefore requiring a re-sit. If, for reasons of time, you cannot take the re-sit but would like to show to your home university that you actually sat the exam, you will have to ask the professor to register the exam result as "Respinto". In this way the exam will be listed in your Transcript with the result "Fail". Otherwise the failed exam will not be listed at all. Please be advised that the Transcript of Records only contains the results of exams and apprenticeships that are listed in the official course catalogue. In case you need a certification for any other sort of academic work (research, thesis papers, non listed laboratory work etc), you will have to arrange with the professor in charge how to certify this and check back with your home university if they would accept it. Likewise for certificates for the attendance of lectures. Medical Assistance for Foreign Students Useful information for using the healthcare services in Italy. Students with EU citizenship (EU students) With official residence in Italy for at least 5 years, may apply to their Municipality of residence for an "Attestato di Soggiorno Permanente"- (Certificate of Permanent Residence) which entitles them to registration with the National Health Service (SSN) and with a General Practitioner (GP) for an indefinite period. With the E106/E109/S1 form issued in their home country, they can register with the SSN and with a GP for the length of time indicated in the form. Anyone who is not entitled to register with a GP but has a valid European health insurance card (TEAM) issued in their home country is entitled to any necessary healthcare, such as occasional visits to a GP or Specialist Clinical services. Anyone who does not have such entitlement may take out private health insurance for the duration of the study programme, covering all risks, and have a certificate of conformity to Italian law signed by the insurance company, which does not include registration with the SSN or with a GP. Students with non-EU citizenship Non EU Students may apply for voluntary registration with the National Health Service and with a General Practitioner, by paying an annual lump sum fee;. The policy is valid for a calendar year (expiring on 31 December); otherwise they may maintain the right to compulsory registration, where provided for by law. They may also take out private health insurance for the duration of the study programme, covering all risks, and have a certificate of conformity to Italian law signed by the insurance company, which does not include registration with the SSN or with a GP. To choose a General Practitioner and receive further information on the Regional Health Service, please contact the Bologna AUSL offices known as "Sportello Unico Distrettuale". Back to your home University The last things to de before your departure At the end of your exchange period you have to go to the same International Relation Office where you have registered your arrival, to register you departure. Take with you your libretto and a copy of it. Check through AlmaEsami that all the exams you’ve taken have been recorded. If not please contact professors and ask for recordings. Bring with you a copy of certifications of all different activities you have done in your exchange period, that are not subjected to recording through AlmaEsami. The International Relation Office will issue certificate stating your exchange period spent at University of Bologna. If you need stamps on specific documents from your home university, bring them with you. After registering your departure and after the office check of all exam records, you’ll be able to download your transcript of records from your personal Homepage, directly from your PC. Your transcript of record provided with digital signature will also be sent by e-mail to your home university. Italian Language Courses Information on Italian language courses held by the University of Bologna for international students. If you come to Bologna as an exchange student you are not required to undergo any Italian language assessment. Nevertheless the achievement of a pre-intermediate level of knowledge of Italian language (A2 level), before arrival in Bologna, is highly recommended. Courses and lectures in English are offered in some graduate programmes (2nd cycle degree), but most of the classes are in Italian. University of Bologna offers Italian laguage courses to foreign students during both first and second semester, but the number of places available in these courses is limited. The University and the city are by now an inseparable whole. Centuries of intense relations at the institutional level and at the citizens' level have significantly marked both sides. Now the University of Bologna is pleased to present further evidence of its bond with such a special city - the Guide to the city of Bologna. A users manual intended to offer a map of the main information sources in Bologna, as well as its most significant attractions. As it is not possible to describe all the activities and businesses available in Bologna, this guide is rather aimed at providing hints and useful tips to live the city to its best. For this publication, an online version is also available at the following Web page: www.unibo.it/GuidaCitta. Once you are acquainted with the key activities and structures of the city, your personal interests and passions will guide you through the different lecture rooms and city squares, its markets and museums, its restaurants and parks. Those who decide to study in Bologna have the opportunity of opening up their horizons, expanding their studies and finding the best ways to enjoy and take care of themselves. Some students will decide to stay and enrich this city with their ideas and experiences, others will decide to return to their home city or to leave for new countries, bringing with them the expertise they have acquired and appreciated here. In this way, all students will leave something of their home city in Bologna and a little of Bologna will always accompany them wherever they go. 2 HISTORY OF THE ALMA MATER The University of Bologna has ancient origins which mark it as the first University in the Western world. Its origins date back to the year 1088 - a conventional date fixed by a committee of historians presided over by the Italian poet and scholar Giosuè Carducci. The institution which we now call the University started to take form in Bologna at the end of Eleventh century when scholars of grammar, rhetoric and logic began to devote themselves to law. The first scholars whom we have documented evidence of are Pepo and Irnerius, the latter also known as "lucerna iuris" by posterity. After hearing the opinion of four doctores considered to be his pupils, in 1158, the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I issued the 'Costitutio Habita', by which the University was designated by law as the place where research could be developed independently from any other power. From the Fourteenth century, the schools of jurists were flanked by those of 3 the so-called "artists" - i.e., scholars of medicine, philosophy, arithmetics, astronomy, logics, rhetoric and grammar. Well-known Italian scholars, writers, and philosophers such as Dante Alighieri, Petrarch, Guido Guinizelli, and Cino da Pistoia spent a period of study in Bologna. Since the Middle Age, the University of Bologna's prestige spread all over Europe and became the destination for other famous scholars, such as Thomas Becket, Paracelsus, Albrecht Dürer, Torquato Tasso and Carlo Goldoni. Nicolaus Copernicus studied papal law here, starting at the same time to make his astronomic observations. With the arrival of the Industrial Revolution, during the Eighteenth century, the University played an important part in the scientific and technological development. The scientific works by Luigi Galvani - one of the founders of modern electrical engineering - date back to this period. The period following the unification of Italy was for the University of Bologna an epoch of great new prestige, during which the figures of Giovanni Capellini, Giosuè Carducci, Giovanni Pascoli, Augusto Righi, Giacomo Ciamician and Augusto Murri stand out among others. In 1888 the eight hundred years of the University of Bologna was celebrated - a great event bringing together in Bologna representatives from all the world universities in order to honour what is considered the Mother of all universities. The celebration became an international study event as all the universities in the world recognized that they had their origins in Bologna, their continuity and the common ideas of progress in a context of tolerance. One hundred years later, on 18th September 1988, in Piazza Maggiore, the Rectors from 430 universities from all continents signed the Magna Charta Universitatum Europaeum, on the occasion of the nine hundred years of the University of Bologna. The Magna Charta states the autonomy of the University and the inseparable bonds between teaching and research, rejecting all limits imposed by “any geographic or political frontier”. On June 19, 1999, the European Ministries of Higher Education signed the so-called Bologna Declaration, in which “the main objectives for the realization of a European common area for higher education are defined”, such as: the adoption of a 2-cycle system; the introduction of a credit-based education system and of a diploma supplement to facilitate transparency and comparability, also at the international level, of the academic degrees; the promotion of student mobility, quality and European dimension. This was actually the start of the Bologna Process, the reform process of the European university system ending in 2010. 4 GETTING INFORMED Beautiful and sweet Bologna! I spent seven years there, Probably the greatest ones... Pier Paolo Pasolini - Italian writer, poet and film director, graduated at the University of Bologna Photo: Valentina Filippi GETTING INFORMED Bologna has always been the "city of students"; with over a thousand years experience as a university city, Bologna has created and developed a wide range of instruments and activities which should not be missed out for lack of information. For this reason, it is important to know where to find and who may provide all the information needed. But if one wants to save time and avoid useless roundabouts, it is extremely important to learn how to “navigate” across Bologna, not only in reference to the fascinating underground water ways but also with regard to the Internet. Thus, this guide starts with the presentation of some important information centres, useful to exploit all the opportunities offered by the city. The main information centres providing services to orientate oneself in the discovery of Bologna are the Public Relations Offices of the University and the Municipality of Bologna. Particularly useful for students in search of financial aid during their period of study is ER.GO, the Regional Agency for the Right to Higher Studies. Each student can then choose his/her own path to better get acquainted with Bologna: a university city and much more. 6 UNIVERSITY OF BOLOGNA Public Relations Office (URP) URP's mission is that of facilitating the relations between the University and its students, or, in general, that of favouring those who are interested in the academic world through a wide range of information and communication tools. But the postman just wanted her to open the door. Michele Mellara and Alessandro Rossi, film directors graduated at the University of Bologna Photo: Elisabetta Bersani LIVING Bologna can boast a long-established tradition of hospitality towards students. There are different opportunities for accommodation, but one should be patient in their search and, above all, be aware that the cost may not be so affordable. The best period to search for accommodation is probably the summer, when all the students are leaving for other destinations. The first thing to do when arriving is to check if there are still posts available at one of the students' residences offered by ER.GO. This opportunity is reserved to all those who possess the specific requisites relating to the student's family income and merit. The services offered by the City Council helping in finding rentable rooms or flats are numerous, but for further information, students need to turn to the Municipality Public Relations Office in Piazza Maggiore. Within the university zone, in addition to the service "Bussola" (Compass) helping students in finding homes - students can also find various notice boards with accommodation advertisements. At newsstands, students may also find a wide range of free magazines with ads for rented accommodation both by estate agencies and private individuals. Internet is also a useful tool for getting acquainted with the housing offer, not to mention word of mouth: another good way of finding a flat. When renting a room or a flat, it is important to have a good knowledge of all legal and contractual aspects. A lease contract not officially registered may cause serious 10 problems. The University of Bologna - in cooperation with the Provincial Command of Guardia di Finanza (The military corps dealing with customs, excise and tax crimes) and with the local Municipality Authorities - is very involved in the fight against fraud and in the promotion of information campaign “Affitti in nero… convenienza zero!!!” (renting on the side....advantage zero!!) In the downloadable publication on the website www.unibo.it/Affitti, students can find information and useful tips to avoid problems and fraud regarding home or room leases. Photo: Valeria Veneroso Photo: Marinela Haxhiraj Photo: Emily Chiesa 11 ER.GO HOUSING SERVICES TEMPORARY ACCOMMODATION Privileged Access Every year, ER.GO, the Regional Agency for the Right to Higher Studies promotes various aid programs through a public competition, including a number of posts with privileged access. I owe much to it, and I find it natural to set stories here. Bologna is between the largest Italian plain and the Apennines. It has a bucolic soul ignored by many, but which I consider as a reason for survival. Enrico Brizzi, writer from Bologna 27 Photo: Giulia Camporesi WORKING Never as in recent years has work become such an integral part of the academic career for every student! After the Italian university reform, the working experience at university structures, or at other public institutions or private companies has become an integral element of the study programme through its curricular traineeship periods as provided by the single academic programmes. In addition, specific traineeships are addressed to graduating and newly graduated students: the qualifying and training experiences carried out at organizations having an agreement with the University offer the opportunity of entering into contact with the job market and of developing the knowledge and skills acquired during their academic career. To earn a living or to benefit from a higher economic autonomy, the student often chooses to work during the academic career. Bologna offers a wide range of job opportunities for students and several services oriented to the job market. An important working opportunity for students with a good academic grade and in needy economic conditions is the part-time work activity at one of the University's structures or offices (libraries, laboratories, museums, administrative offices, etc.). Students may also choose to find a job outside the academic framework: the several job selection agencies in the city territory, the employment centres, the Informagiovani service, and so on are often looking for dynamic and keen students! 28 VOCATIONAL AND JOB MARKET GUIDANCE Traineeships in Italy and abroad During the academic career, students have the opportunity of carrying out a traineeship at a private/public organization or company having an agreement with the University. For further information, please turn to the Traineeship Office of the relevant Faculty/School. Graduating or newly graduated students (within 18 months from the obtainment of their degree) may carry out a qualifying traineeship period for a first contact with the job market, both in Italy and in a EU or non-EU Country. EATING Bologna is “wise” and “gourmand” at the same time. “Wise” because “gourmand”: only the abundance of food and the organization of the food supply allows for the gathering together and nourishing of a very large student population. “Gourmand” because “wise”: the gathering of students in Bologna guarantees an extraordinary cultural melting pot, also with respect to gastronomy; every student brings his/her own experience, making Bologna a “bridge” between different European traditions. Massimo Montanari, teacher at the University of Bologna 33 Photo: Valentina Filippi EATING Good food has always been one of the main attractions for Bologna's visitors. If variety and abundance of food are not a problem, as is finding a meal at an affordable price, students must know the one-thousand proposals available in the city, starting from the catering services organized by the University and by ER.GO. University canteens and refectories are probably the cheaper option for a complete meal. Right in the heart of the university area, students may find several pubs, restaurants, pizzerias and bars where it is possible to taste a delightful menu at variable prices. For dinner, an interesting place is via del Pratello, an historical street full of typical Bolognese osterias and trattorias (sort of taverns). With the arrival of different ethnic communities, the gastronomic offer has changed too: many restaurants and bars now cater for North African, Middle-Eastern, Balkan and Far-Eastern food at very affordable prices. When doing food shopping, the cheapest place is probably the Mercato delle Erbe (Market of fruit and vegetables) in via Ugo Bassi, mainly selling fruits and vegetables, but also cheese, meat, and fish at competitive prices. In the city historical centre, students can also find a large number of supermarkets and discount supermarkets. By now it is possible to eat and buy food at every hour of the day and night: the food shops and bars open during the night are getting more and more numerous. Lastly, but not the least, Bologna hosts several food markets, groceries and supermarkets specialized in the selling of organic food or fair-trade products. 34 UNIVERSITY REFECTORIES OR CANTEENS The University refectories or canteens are open to everyone, with a discount for students presenting the university badge. Students benefiting from ER.GO's catering service may pay by using the meal vouchers provided by the same Agency or by using their university badge. To apply for this service, it is necessary to comply with the requisites indicated in the notice of competition, which is annually published between June and July on the website www.er-go.it. Bononia University Restaurant La Scuderia piazza Verdi 2 Students are offered a 30% discount on all list prices until 21.00 (except on Sat, Sun and on Bank Holidays). Small enough to be explored on foot or by bike, the city offers a very efficient public service of bus transport - urban and extra-urban - managed by ATC, the city's transport company. ATC also offers a service for car sharing. With this system, it is possible to rent a car even for a short period of time at very affordable prices. In addition, within the territory of Emilia-Romagna region you can buy a unique pass or ticket to travel by train and bus. This service - called “Mi Muovo” - is the first integrated transport subscription dedicated to all students. For those who need a private car, it is recommendable to consult the website of the Municipality of Bologna under the section “infomobilità”, which is useful to get acquainted with the urban driving code, and the temporary or residence car access permits. For students willing to move around by bike, the City promotes the programme “C’entro in bici” - a service of bicycle renting with automatic payment. During the year, several public auctions take place for the sale of second-hand bikes at cheap prices. It is recommendable to pay attention when parking your bike: it is strictly forbidden to park your bike under the porticos (the city arches). The same rule applies to motorbikes and mopeds, which must be positioned in the appropriate areas! To travel outside Bologna, in Italy and abroad, students can find various transport opportunities: trains, long-distance buses, and airplanes. Bologna airport is in fact connected with the main cities in Europe and in the world. 40 BICYCLES A cheap and environment-friendly means of transport to move across the city is represented by the bicycle. The map of the cycle tracks in Bologna and in the suburbs is available on the website www.comune.bologna.it under the section "Infomobilità - Mobilità Urbana". “C’entro in bici” Bologna offers a public service of bike renting with automatic payment. This service is addressed to all persons of age being resident in Bologna or its provincial territory, or being resident in another city of the Emilia-Romagna region but living in Bologna, including the personnel and the students from the University of Bologna, even if they are not resident in Bologna. To use these bikes, a special key with personal code protection is required; the key is made available by the ATCittà offices at the subscription. This is the centre of Bologna, the centre of a land city; just give the door a knock and it will open to show a river. Carlo Lucarelli, writer, graduated at the University of Bologna 47 Photo: Gian Piero Granieri EXPERIENCING Bologna "The Wise" offers a wide range of opportunities for those who wish to discover, know and have an insight view into the world: exhibitions, concerts, masterly lectures, conferences, as well as art, music, dance and cinema reviews, poetry events and scientific debates. The University of Bologna promotes the initiative "Unibocultura", a review of cultural events mainly addressed to students. The various university museums - from the Museum of Palazzo Poggi to the Museum of Geology and Paleontology, passing through the Museum of Zoology, the Specola and the Museum of Astronomy - represent another opportunity for acquiring knowledge. The likewise numerous city museums are also of great interest for students: the Museum of Archaeology, the Museum of Judaism, the Morandi Museum, the MAMbo - the Museum of Modern Art, Villa delle Rose and many others make Bologna a city to be explored. An important cultural initiative during the summer is “Bolognaestate”, a festival of cultural and entertainment events, taking place from June to September and including a rich agenda of events set in charming cloisters, squares and gardens. The cultural opportunities are often offered thanks to the numerous cultural associations, galleries and clubs promoting events, festivals and learning courses open to everyone. The city of Bologna also includes small “places of culture” such as the special video shops where you can find essay films, or the shops selling the rarest comics, an industry which can boast a solid tradition in Bologna with authors like Bonvi, Igort, Magnus and Pazienza. Already “European capital for culture” in the year 2000, Bologna has been appointed by UNESCO a “Creative city of music” for the year 2008, thanks to its rich musical tradition in constant evolution. To sum up, it is possible to affirm that Bologna "The Wise" never lets you down: favouring and stimulating culture and knowledge has always been one of its oldest virtues. 48 UNIVERSITY MUSEUMS Museums of Palazzo Poggi This great and noble palace from the Fifteenth century is seat of various collections, such as the Specola Museum, the Museum of Human Anatomy and the Museum of Physics. Ester Balassini, Italian champion in the throwing of the hammer, graduated at the University of Bologna 55 Photo: MalÒ Serena Aurora Erotico SPORT Although the city does not incorporate so many green areas inside the urban perimeter, several public park surround Bologna. The best-known public park in the city is probably the park "Giardini Margherita", a beloved destination for all joggers and rollerbladers. Positioned in the real heart of the city centre, between via Irnerio and via Indipendenza, is the Parco della Montagnola. A fascinating and peaceful place but with limitations in terms of opening hours and movement is the Botanical Garden, one of the oldest in the world. The surrounding hills with their parks represent a further opportunity to spend a day in a green area, for example, the Park of Villa Cassarini, the Parco Talon, the Parco Cavaioni or the green area of Monte Donato, just to mention some of them. For those who fear that they do not have enough training or muscle, it is recommendable to take the bus 52B to explore the hills. The quality of life and the health much depend on the sports activities carried out. Moreover, sports help your studying: the preparation for a match and that of an exam require the same concentration and the use of a method; sports activities contribute to the personal wellbeing and favour social integration. For this reason, the University of Bologna promotes sports activities among students through a special agreement with CUSB - the University Sports Centre of Bologna, offering the opportunity of playing several sports disciplines at an amateur or at a competitive level, at very affordable prices. 56 CUS Bologna Sports within the University are organized and managed by CUS Bologna, the University Sports Centre of Bologna. On the website of CUS Bologna, you can find all contacts for the sports facilities and centres, but also information about the different sports disciplines and the modalities of subscription. via S. Alessandro Bergonzoni, artist, graduated at the University of Bologna 59 Photo: Michele Massa TAKING CARE OF ONESELF Besides boasting a prestigious School of Medicine at a national and international level, Bologna offers a wide range of opportunities and facilities for your care. Students coming from another city to study here may choose a general practitioner or doctor (in Italian, “medico di base”) as an alternative to their own doctor in the city of residence; to ask for a doctor, students just need to turn to the CUP - Centro Unificato di Prenotazione (the Unified Centre for Reservation) with a valid identity document and the personal healthcare card. Students who do not want to give up their own general practitioner at the city of residence may apply to the practicing doctors offered by Azienda USL - Bologna for a free check-up in their surgery. For a complete list of all doctors available, visit the website www.unibo.it/Medico; it is recommended to hand in the documents required. To book a specialized check-up or examination or test, just apply to CUP or to one of the so many pharmacies or chemist's enabled to make a reservation upon the presentation of the doctor's prescription. If you prefer to apply to a private centre or medical structure, you will have an amazingly vast choice. In addition, the University of Bologna offers to all students specific and free services, such as the SAP (the Psychological Aid Service). Though being the cradle of traditional medicine, Bologna does not however neglect other alternative medicines: in almost every chemist's or pharmacy, you can find an area dedicated to homeopathy, herbalism or other disciplines. By surfing the Web, you may also find a wide range of structures offering non conventional therapeutical treatments and practices. 60 BASIC MEDICAL ASSISTANCE FOR INCOMING STUDENTS All the information about healthcare and the useful contacts for medical assistance are available at the website: www.unibo.it/Medico. Pierfrancesco Pacoda, journalist, graduated at the University of Bologna 65 Photo: Gennaro Pazienza GOING OUT Bologna is the ideal city to exploit one's leisure time to the best: from the aperitif time to late night, all bars, discos and streets of the city centre are enlivened by young men and women coming from different regions of Italy and foreign countries. Among the many thousand ways of spending the night, Bologna can boast a high number of theatres and cinemas having an agreement with the University, such as the Cineteca Lumière, where entire generations of students have explored and appreciated the film production of every continent; or theatres like the Arena del Sole, which is the stage of great Italian actors and artists, including prestigious international performances. Music has also a fundamental role in the cultural and entertainment panorama of the city. As a matter of fact, there is the saying in Bologna: "if you kick a bush, a DJ will come out of it". The places where music is played live are various, from classic jazz at Chet Baker, Cantina Bentivoglio or Scuderia, to pop-rock (Covo, Estragon, Locomotiv), passing through the inter-ethnic remaking of traditional music (La Casbah). But Bologna is also the place for dance: from the glamour clubs such as Kinki to the discos like the Container, where it is possible to find a niche-audience. So, after studying or working, students have the possibility of enjoying themselves in a continuous party, which concludes every night with a hot croissant at one of the numerous bars open during the night, scattered all over the city. 66 CINEMAS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE UNIVERSITY Students and staff from the University of Bologna have access to a large number of cinemas having an agreement with the University, which offer a reduced ticket price on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays (except during bank holidays). The Cineteca of Bologna applies special reductions to all students (also during bank holidays) as well. (and why is it compulsory?…) The study plan is the list of courses that you wish to follow based on your approved Learning Agreement. It is necessary in order to sit exams and record your marks. The study plan has to be filled in online through the service Piani di studio web. It is compulsory to fill it in before sitting the exams because only after completing your study plan will you be able to register for exams and professors will be enabled to record them. Almaesami, the system for registering for and recording of exams works only for those exams which are already included in your study plan. It is possible to change your study plan at any time by adding or deleting course units; but if you are adding a course unit, you must do it before the exam! In order to find the list of course units you can check the university website www.unibo.it under the link Course catalogue >> Course units catalogue in the grey column on the left of the home page. If you need some help in choosing the right course unit please contact your exchange coordinator or the Uffici didattici of your School. HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR ONLINE STUDY PLAN Go to the students’ online services of www.unibo.it or to your personal homepage in AlmaRM – Accesso studenti or directly connect to the web page https://piani.unibo.it and type in your username and password. Use the blue buttons to browse, and not the arrows of the browser. To choose the course units you wish to attend click on and on the next page You can select the course units by School, course unit name, professor or degree programme, by filling in the relative field and clicking on You will see the course units in alphabetical order along with the Professor that teaches them, the code and the name of the degree programme they belong to, the credits and the School. Sometimes the same Professor teaches the same course unit for different degree programmes. In this case the same course unit and credits are listed more than once. To choose the right course unit pay attention to the name of the professor and to the amount of credits assigned to the unit. If you find two or more course units with the same name, taught by the same professor and with the same amount of credits you must check that the course unit you are choosing belongs to the right degree programme. e.g. Insegnamento/Course unit ELEMENTI DI INGEGNERIA ELETTRICA T Professor/ Docente BRESCHI MARCO Degree programme/ Corso Credits/CFU Scuola/School di laurea 0918-INGEGNERIA CHIMICA E BIOCHIMICA 9 INGEGNERIA You can find integrated courses made of two or more sub-units (the so-called C.I. = Corso Integrato). For instance: 29953 - AGRONOMIA SPERIMENTALE (C.I.) AMBIENTALE, MALERBOLOGIA ED ELEMENTI DI METODOLOGIA is made of three sub-units: 29954 - AGRONOMIA AMBIENTALE Vicari Alberto 5 ECTS ALMA MATER STUDIORUM – UNIVERSITÀ DI BOLOGNA – Via Zamboni 33 – 40126 Bologna, Italy – www.unibo.it ALMA MATER STUDIORUM – UNIVERSITÀ DI BOLOGNA 24488 - MALERBOLOGIA Catizone Pietro 3 ECTS 29960 - METODOLOGIA SPERIMENTALE ED ANALISI DEI DATI Ventura Francesca 3 ECTS You can load in your online study plan the whole integrated course and sit the whole exam or load one or more single sub-units and sit the single exams (always check with your coordinator about this option). To be sure you are loading the right sub-unit check the name of the professor, the code of the degree programme and the credits. Furthermore check that the name of the course unit is separated by the name of the sub-unit by a dash (C.I. – Sub-Unit) e.g., if you want to select “Malerbologia”, you have to look for Sub-Unit/ Insegnamento Professor/ Docente AGRONOMIA AMBIENTALE, MALERBOLOGIA ED ELEMENTI DI METODOLOGIA SPERIMENTALE CATIZONE (C.I.) PIETRO - MALERBOLOGIA Degree Programme/ Corso di laurea Credits/CFU 0878-SCIENZE E TECNOLOGIE AGRARIE 3 If you do not want to choose any other course unit click on When you are sure that you have identified the right course unit or sub-unit click on the white square at its side and it will be automatically added to your study plan. You will see the list of the chosen course units: List of course units chosen 0918- 29904 - ELEMENTI DI INGEGNERIA ELETTRICA T - 2011 The first 4-digit code on the left identifies the degree programme, the second 5-digit code identifies the subject. 2011 identifies the Academic Year 2011-2012 in which you submit your study plan. If you want to remove a course unit click on the corresponding button If you wish to submit your study plan click on and then save it by clicking on Once you have saved your study plan the session ends. You can print out a document that will include your personal data, the full list of the selected course units, the credits for each course unit, the total number of credits and the date. If you do not wish to submit the plan nor save the changes you have made click on “Logout”. The exams that you have uploaded in your study plan are automatically loaded on AlmaEsami. You can find AlmaEsami among the students’ online services of www.unibo.it or in your personal homepage in AlmaRM – Accesso studenti or you can connect to https://almaesami.unibo.it/ to register for exams and to check that the exams have been recorded. Aptitude Test in a Foreign Language at CILTA or CLIRO If you want to obtain an aptitude qualification in a foreign language at CILTA or CLIRO (English, German, Spanish, French), you must insert the language qualification in your plan at the desired level (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2) and with the number of credits which interests you. To find the appropriate aptitude qualification carry out a research by name, using the following designations: Idoneita’ Idoneita’ Idoneita’ Idoneita’ lingua lingua lingua lingua inglese francese spagnola tedesca ALMA MATER STUDIORUM – UNIVERSITÀ DI BOLOGNA – Via Zamboni 33 – 40126 Bologna, Italy – www.unibo.it ALMA MATER STUDIORUM – UNIVERSITÀ DI BOLOGNA and choose the test with the level and the number of credits desired, from those available at CLIRO or CILTA.
