Your local hospice, our local care
P5 : Ruth’s Story
T
his is a story with a difference;
two lives changed drastically
by health. Meet Paul and Judy
Powell.
Paul and Judy met in the 70s at their
local disco in Macclesfield (Paul proudly
donning his fabulous highly shone, brown
platform shoes). They were married in
1976, aged 23. Paul was working for North
West Gas as a mains and service layer, a
job that he loved. They had only been
married 18 months when Paul started
to feel unwell, getting very tired, being
sick and having chronic head pain. Aged
24, Paul was sadly pensioned off with ill
health.
After much back and forth (many
tests and an operation) the most likely
diagnosis that the medical profession
could come up with was Cerebral Lupus.
The couple were told that Paul was also
likely to have DNA problems so they took
the difficult decision to not have a family
of their own.
Cheerfully though, they both have huge
smiles on their faces when they talk so
fondly of their well-loved rescue dog
Dexter, who will often sit for hours next to
Paul.
This simple story cannot do justice to
38 years of poor health.
Judy managed to work full time until
about 5 years ago, when Paul’s health
deteriorated further. Paul’s current
problems are Encephalitis, neuropathic
pain, epilepsy, poor co-ordination/balance
and falls. Up until two years ago (with
the support of friends), they used to go
on holiday to Jersey, a place very dear
to their hearts as that’s where they got
engaged.

“One of the hardest things to come to
terms with is realising that we can’t go
back.”
Fast forward to the present and with
advances to medical science, the couple
(now aged 60) have recently found out
that Paul does not have a diagnosis of
Cerebral Lupus. Even more bewildering is
that the medical professions can’t actually
name what is wrong. For 35 years he
has been misdiagnosed. After a medical
referral, Paul started to attend the Day
Hospice this year.
“The word hospice frightens people.
I can’t stress enough that you don’t
need to be frightened. The people are
wonderful, I think the nurses are like
angels and the doctors are so helpful.”
Paul has also thoroughly enjoyed having
a normal natter with people.
“It has been wonderful to have some
male company and banter. Phil likes
to take the mickey a bit and Rick the
chaplain has been a real support to talk
to. It is great too that if I feel ill whilst
at the day hospice, there are trained
medical staff to help and talk to which
makes me feel more at ease.”
Paul has recently had some respite time
on in-care.
“We can’t thank all the staff
enough, nothing is too much
trouble. The kitchen staff too – put
plainly, if you want three sweets,
you get three sweets.”
Paul found reiki really helped him and he
has also been taught to paint in the art
therapy sessions at St Luke’s; he is starting
his third painting.

My husband Dave is on his own journey at the
moment with illness, and I am right beside him for
that marathon. I chose to do the colour run because
the least I could do for him and for St Luke’s is 5km
of the journey. The photo shows the aftermath of our
colour run for the hospice. Thank you St Luke’s for
supporting us and giving us the chance to ‘live our

News in brief
...Continued from front page
Welcome to this edition
Judy’s story as a carer
Judy started to use the ‘Time Out’ carers’ group and
complementary therapy services that St Luke’s offers.
“It has all been so well planned. My appointments at the
hospice coincide with the time when Paul finishes at St Luke’s.”
For Judy, the care Paul receives from St Luke’s is peace of mind, “It is so hard
to put into words what the hospice does. Paul takes 26 different medications
a day. The biggest relief for me though is that the staff are so highly qualified.
They understand the drugs and the necessary routines so well and nothing
is too much trouble. I feel safe leaving Paul in their care, which I have not
experienced anywhere else.”
“Without a doubt, St Luke’s came into our lives at a particularly dark time
for us. Paul’s health had worsened and suddenly there was no diagnosis or
prognosis, which is hard to come to terms with. St Luke’s can’t solve this
problem for us, but what they have done is offer care,
support and a listening ear. As a carer, St Luke’s has

he spring and summer months have seen us complete the building work of our
second site at Wheelock Heath (known as Winterley Grange). Staff have started
to move into the building. The site plays host to the wider education teams for both
end of life and dementia care. From autumn 2014, complementary therapies and
some support services will be delivered from Winterley Grange (the venue does not
have a bedded unit or full day hospice service).
The President’s Appeal (which was set up to raise money for the building of
Winterley Grange) was a huge success and culminated in a wonderful ball, ladies’
lunch and fashion show at Tirley Garth in May.
Our 10th Midnight Walk took place in June and the streets of Nantwich and Crewe
were a mass of pink t-shirts, with 1,100 ladies raising money for patient care.
We look forward to continuing to deliver services to the local people who need us.
2015 will bring exciting new events (including The Biggest Loser) that you can join
in with. On behalf of everyone, thank you for supporting your local hospice.
Every penny raised really does make a difference.
Volunteer Support
I
n June we celebrated National Volunteers Week. During 2013 our volunteers
contributed 85,831 hours of their time. This was equivalent to £516,185 if
national minimum wage was paid, or a massive £814,828 at equivalent NHS
salary scales. This is a truly remarkable service to St Luke’s.
“We know that volunteers don’t volunteer for the thanks, but we would like to
say thank you. The impact of St Luke’s work has grown so much during the last
12 months and their volunteering really has made a difference to the hospice
as a whole. St Luke’s is so proud of our incredible team of volunteers – they all
make a real difference to the lives of people in their community.”
If you are interested in volunteering, have a look at our website
www.stlukes-hospice.co.uk/volunteer
On behalf of everyone at St Luke’s we say a massive thank you to
every single volunteer.

A star of a landlord
E
rnie Welch (who most people know as the landlord at the Old Star Pub in Winsford)
has had a fantastic year raising a staggering £11,100 from his cycle challenge from
The Old Star to the Mayo Roscommon Hospice in Ireland.
He didn’t’ stop with the huge 305 miles;
he then walked up ‘The Reek’ standing
at 764m. The Old Star was also voted the
McCoys crisps best pub in the country
from over 2,000 pubs. Why? Simply
because in his words, St Luke’s is here
for everyone that needs it at some of
the hardest times of their lives.
Congratulations Ernie, your hard work
on and off the bike has raised a fantastic
amount of money for the Hospice.
S
t Anne’s Catholic Primary School in Nantwich have been chosen as our
children’s project for 2014. Six children will be invited to the hospice to learn
simple hand massage and do some painting with our day hospice patients. Full
story will be in the Spring edition of our newsletter.
1,000 Miles in 10 Months
R
icky Houston set himself a challenge with a difference: to run 1,000 road miles in
12 months. Unfortunately (due to serving in the RAF )he is being deployed to the
Falklands in November for 4 months, so he is reducing the timescale to 10 months to
increase the challenge.
Ernie, Joyce, Claire and Al Murray
Running to his limit
R
ichard Dickens (one of the creators of the very popular Run Marbury event) took up the
challenge to run thirty 10k’s in thirty days in support of the Hospice
“I support St Luke’s because close family friends have received help, advice and treatment at
the hospice. The staff are always warm, welcoming and very caring at all levels. The big thing to
me is the pure fact that the money raised from sponsorship goes directly to helping people at
the hospice. If I didn’t run for the hospice, I wouldn’t run. Thinking that this run can help others
is my motivation.”
Rick raised over £2,200. This challenge pushed Rick to his limit which shows what incredibly
tough challenges our supporters do to raise the vital funds for the Hospice.
Thank you for all your hard work and support Rick.
rk Porter
“I’m running the Chester marathon in October as a warm up to my four back to back
marathons at the end of October when I will be running from Lincoln cathedral to
St Luke’s, in just 4 days, it’s about 30 miles a day. I’m under no illusion that this will be
a physically demanding challenge with a high possibility of failing as I have never
run more than 20 miles before in my life. I hope I complete what I have set out to do.”
“St Luke’s showed so much support and care
when my auntie Karen sadly lost her battle
with cancer. The staff were truly fantastic and
would give you all the time in the world if you
need it. It is a very special place. I will never
forget what this hospice did for my family. It
was amazing at a very hard time for us all. It
is now time for me to give something back
to them so that they can continue to provide
the support and care it has already given to
so many families”.
A huge challenge, thank you Ricky and best
of luck with your deployment.

he fabulous Redshift Radio have continued to support
St Luke’s this year, not only with regular interview slots,
but also by hosting our Midnight Walk entertainment for the
second year running. In addition, this great community radio

Thank you to Liz and the team, very much appreciated.

arlier this year, Blue Bell BMW Crewe staged
their fourth annual Golf Day and raised
£645 for St Luke’s. “Everyone agreed it was
our best golf day! We were thrilled to have
raised so much money for St Luke’s who work
tirelessly to help those who need help and
support through a difficult time. Everyone had
a wonderful time, and being able to raise over
£600 to help a local charity was the perfect
way to end it.”
F
J Need (Foods) in Nantwich held a fundraising day for St Luke’s and
raised £356.90.
A lot of fun was had and the thing that people seem to remember is cake!
“It will certainly be a day we all will remember. I’m so glad we had this
opportunity to all come together to raise as much as we did for a great
cause. Considering that we are only a small company, I think we did our
very best and hope to do even better in future events. It makes me feel
so
proud to be giving so much to the people that need it most.
It just makes you think a lot about life and all the goodness that so little
can do for other people. I think it’s just amazing.”
Thanks to everyone at FJ Need (Foods) for their enthusiasm and suppo
rt.
Thanks very much to Blue Bell BMW for their
continued support.
