St Luke’s News
Your local hospice, our local care
Autumn/Winter 2015
Memories are a blessing
“Absolutely everyone cares at the Hospice; the
compassion of the staff is what stands out for
me - as well as caring for Mum they cared for me
and my family”
Last summer Jan Woolgar
from Nantwich received the
news which every cancer
survivor dreads; after 11 years
in remission her cancer had
returned and it was terminal.
Jan’s daughter Beth talked to us recently
about her Mum and explained the
difference St Luke’s made to her and her
family at such a challenging time.
“Mum had been ill for a number of
months before we knew for certain that
the cancer had come back; she was on
oxygen at home and having panic attacks,
I remember calling the ambulance at one
point, it became a very stressful time.
Moving to St Luke’s helped everyone;
I was with her all the time when she was
in the Hospice, my Dad and brothers
were able to stay too.
Mum had secondary breast cancer in
her brain and lungs, and as a patient at
St Luke’s she absolutely loved the art
workshop because it allowed her to
express how she was feeling. She loved to
draw, to sit in the gardens and have her
family and friends at any time.
It was around this time that I realised she
might never see me and my fiancé Matt
get married; we had been engaged for
years as our initial plans to get married on
my 21st had to be put on hold when Matt
had an accident and when our children
were born our priorities changed.
I desperately wanted Mum to be there with
me when I said ‘I do’, so we started making
enquiries and Mum was the one that
suggested Wychwood Park. We went to
look around and fell in love with the venue;
looking back I think the wedding was the
one thing that kept her going.
As the wedding got closer we realised
Mum wouldn’t be well enough to come;
I was devastated. We spoke to the nurses
about it and then to St Luke’s Chaplain
Rick, and before I knew it they had offered
to organise us an intimate wedding
blessing for us in the Hospice Chapel!
When the day arrived I left Wychwood in
my big dress and squeezed into my Dad’s
old VW for the drive over to St Luke’s!
I will always remember
walking into the Chapel and
seeing Mum look so beautiful.
Everyone who was there has
such a wonderful lasting
memory of Mum; I cannot
thank St Luke’s enough for
those memories.
Friends and family have been so generous
with their donations both at the wedding
and since she has died, and more than
£2,200 has been given to St Luke’s in her
memory.
We are so grateful to St Luke’s for making
what was truly an awful few weeks
into many happy memories which I am
blessed to have.”
Beth is just one person who has been
touched by the work of St Luke’s. As a
charity we rely on the generosity of our
community to fund the care we provide.
For just £5.98 a month you could pay
for a minute of care at St Luke’s and
help other families create beautiful
lasting memories.

Expanding Day Hospice services
St Luke’s does so many wonderful things for
our community and with new services being
introduced all the time there could be a few
things you didn’t know about us.
“Here at St Luke’s we offer support through two
key services; our Day Hospice and In-Care. All the
people we support receive the same sort of care,
but the difference between the two services is in
the way in which we deliver the care.
Last year our Day Hospice supported more people
than ever before thanks to your donations. Each
week we supported 151 patients, family members
and carers through a wide variety of clinics here at
St Luke’s in Winsford, at Winterley Grange in
Sandbach, and at Leighton Hospital in Crewe.
My team are focussed on supporting patients
who have been told they have a life-limiting
illness, from the point they are diagnosed right
through to dying.
Day Hospice Manager Clare Wolff talks about how
your support is enabling her team to help local
people and their families as they face incredibly
challenging times.
With advances in medicine we are now seeing
patients survive for many years after they are
diagnosed. This means that our services must reflect
the changing needs of our community, so we are
always introducing new clinics and services with our
most recent addition being the Befriending Service.
Le
While our services continue to develop, one thing
which remains constant is our passion to empower
everyone we support; be it through rehabilitation,
enablement, knowledge or advice, our happy Day
Hospice is somewhere anyone can turn to in their
time of need.”

T ur de St Luke’s
Earlier this year St Luke’s Physiotherapist Tiffany
Treharne had the wonderful idea of hosting the
first ever Tour de St Luke’s, and what a fantastic
team effort the tour was!
Joining in the fun were Day Hospice patients,
relatives, carers, staff, volunteers and even some
drivers taking part in the 24 hour challenge,
which took place over four days at the start of
June in Day Hospice.
Central to the challenge was the Hospice’s
MOTOmed bike; a specialist piece of equipment
used regularly by patients which focusses on
movement therapy to aid rehabilitation.
The bike cost £4,650 and we were able to buy it
two years ago thanks to a grant from The Percy
Bilton Trust.
Plus some of our cyclists were sponsored to take
part and helped raise a fantastic £796.77 for Day
Hospice. Tiffany said, “Well done and thank you
to everyone who took part, it was a great four
days and the challenge got everyone talking
about exercise.
We had people of all abilities cycling for periods
of 10 to 40 minutes; we had the ‘spinners’ who
pedalled so fast and furious that the bike moved
around, to those who found taking part a
challenge and benefited from the exercise.”
If you would like to take part in the next
Tour de St Luke’s please contact:
Tiffany on 01606 555681 or email
[email protected]
More than 100 people took part in
Tour de St Luke’s and over the course of 24
hours 349.66 miles were cycled, the equivalent
of cycling from St Luke’s in Winsford to Land’s
End in Cornwall!
You can support St Luke’s by setting up a regular donation
For just £5.98 a month you could pay for a minute of care at St Luke’s.
Every second of care we provide is precious, so donating the cost of a minute each month is truly a gift.

‘Making a difference together’
Here at St Luke’s we work with local
companies who support the Hospice with
a regular donation or by fundraising but
we need more support. Our approach with
local businesses is based upon the values we
adhere to at the Hospice; we embrace change,
we explore new ways of working, we work in
partnership, and we strive for excellence. Business Buddy member Tata Chemicals has been a long
term supporter of St Luke’s. But there are more strings to
their bow, and since the beginning of the year staff have
raised more than £5,000 with a car boot sale, through their
popular tuck shop, and through the 3 Peaks Challenge
which saw 18 staff trek 26 miles in just 24 hours!
Staff at Tata Chemicals have an immense local pride and
commitment to their community so our partnership really
has been a perfect fit.
Tata are keen to incorporate volunteering into their
support for the Hospice and give staff one day off each
year where they can volunteer for their chosen charity.
Business Buddies is a new scheme launching
this Autumn. Local companies of any size can
support St Luke’s via a monthly donation; and
in return for their financial support we provide
an informal business network for members
twice a year.
Phil Davis, General Manager Business Services at Tata
Chemicals said
“Fundraising and volunteering are a central part
of what we are about; it is very important to us
that we are able to help and support local charities
that have had a huge direct impact on people
within our company.”
Business Buddies is not about the size of an
organisation or the formality of the service
they provide, it is about their commitment to
our community and to the services we provide
for local people.
Tata Chemicals corporate philosophy goes beyond
social responsibility to incorporate a passionate
concern for local communities. We are delighted
to have their support and look forward to working
together in the future.
For more information please contact

Payzone chose to raise money for St Luke’s after
some employees were touched by the services
the Hospice provides. Manager of their Social
Committee Stephanie Shaw said:
Last summer employees at local company Payzone
UK chose St Luke’s as their charity of the year, and
they set themselves the challenging target of
raising £20,000!
In true Payzone style, staff have thrown themselves
into their fundraising by organising pyjama days,
cake sales, raffles and even a car wash at their
offices in Northwich, as well as taking part in some
of our events including a skydive, the Bubble Rush
and Midnight Walk, but their main focus has been
the Diamond Charity Ball which is taking place at
Rookery Hall on 25th September.
“We chose St Luke’s because its services benefit
the whole community and some were relevant
to us. We have a fantastic team here at Payzone
who work really hard alongside their day to
day jobs to raise money for St Luke’s”.
If your company is looking for a charity to support
or if you would like to suggest to your colleagues
that you support St Luke’s, please contact corporate
fundraisers Mark or Chantal for some tips and
advice on 01606 555826, we would be delighted
to help.

At the Hospice we are heavily reliant on volunteers
to enable us to deliver a range of different projects;
from gardening to reception we have something
for everyone. Here are some of the roles we are
recruiting for at the moment.

With the expansion of the warehouse and our new
House Clearance service we need more volunteers to
help in different roles for example, driving the vans,
sorting and organising donated items including clothes,
books, bric-a-brac, electrical items and furniture or
promoting items on eBay.
Our furniture warehouse is open to the public six days a
week. Please get in touch if you have time to spare and
are willing to give excellent customer service.

proves popular
This summer our trading team expanded their services to
offer a house clearance service to local people. The service
has been incredibly popular and we are delighted with the
positive feedback we have received so far from customers.
How it works
From the removal of a couple of items to a complete house
clearance, our team can tailor their service to your specific
needs. Competitively priced, the team will provide
a quote for the work you require and all
the profits from the job will go directly to
the Hospice.
Our professional team will ensure everything is managed
smoothly, and they will work with you to provide the level
of service you require. We can sort through and pack items,
and can take just a few selected items if you wish.
“My family and I were going through a difficult time
when Dad died this summer, processing our loss was
hard but to top it off we didn’t know what to do with
his furniture. A friend recommended we use St Luke’s
House Clearance and I’m so glad we did! The volunteer
team were very understanding and did a fantastic job
removing all the unwanted furniture. ”

Christmas Fair - Saturday 28th November, Winsford Lifestyle Centre
Our first Christmas Fair was held almost
20 years ago, and this year our nurses
will once again be organising the event
which has over 50 stalls with the support
of “Lucy’s Girls”. Lucy was a patient here
at the Hospice 10 years ago and ever
since her wonderful daughters Pam,
Christine and Liz who are known fondly
as Lucy’s Girls, have had a stall at the Fair.
Christmas cards and gifts
Here at St Luke’s we always stock a beautiful selection of
cards and gifts in our shops and online. From larger gifts to
stocking fillers and even wrapping paper and ribbon, our
gifts are a chance for you to find something unique as well
as a chance to support St Luke’s.
www.stlukeshospiceshop.co.uk
Lucy’s youngest daughter Angela also helped
with their stall but sadly passed away in 2013 after
suffering from cancer; one of her final wishes was
to sell all her beautiful clothes and jewellery in aid
of St Luke’s and more than £8,000 was raised. The
Girls are also supported by their dear friend Roz,
and together they spend all year securing new and
vintage gifts for their fabulous stall, it is not to be
missed!

Tree sales and collection
Christmas trees will be on sale at our warehouse
throughout December, at the Yew Tree Pub in
Bunbury and at the Christmas Bubble Rush.
Starting from £25 the trees are sourced locally
and buying them through us means you will be
supporting your Hospice.
Santa’s Grotto
Our popular Luke the Bus will once
again be decorated as Santa’s Grotto
throughout December, bringing joy to
children (and adults!) across Cheshire.
You can book Luke the Bus to come to
your school or Christmas Fair, but be
quick because it gets booked up!

Once Christmas is over and the branches start
to droop, you might like us to collect your tree
for recycling. Taking place over the weekend of
9th - 10th January you can book your tree in
with St Luke’s, and in return for a donation we
will come and collect it for you.
The Christmas tree recycling scheme is fantastic
fun and last year raised more than £10,000, and
with your help we can raise even more. We are
looking for volunteers to support the collection,
having your own van is not essential but would
really help!
