The Greater Hazard Area Performing Arts Series invites you to browse our 2011-2012 season brochure that features marquee
performances this fall including Barter Theatre’s touring production of Civil War Voices in honor of the 150th Anniversary of the start
of the Civil War; and some of today’s best country and bluegrass music in a concert by The Grascals, with special guests The Roys.
In the spring the Performing Arts Series is very excited to present Atlanta Rhythm Section for a Valentine’s Day event. Other season
highlights include Alison Brown, the Missoula Children’s Theatre production of Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs, and our Mountain
Songwriters Nights. All of these events promise to provide entertainment the whole family can enjoy.
Most artists will also be offering arts education programs for area schools and students. These arts education programs provide
excellent resources and documentation for area schools arts program reviews. You will see these arts education programs noted
throughout the brochure with an apple icon
as well as additional information in the Arts Education Schedule insert. Be sure to
check out these wonderful arts education opportunities and contact the performing arts office to book a workshop or performance
for your group to attend.
We invite you to become a volunteer, as well as a donor and patron at performances during the season. Whatever your interests or
talents, there’s a place for you as a volunteer. Contact the performing arts office for more information. Know that when you support

Missoula Children’s Theatre in
Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs

The season opens with a Performing Arts Series and community
favorite. The Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) will return for
their seventh appearance on the series presenting Snow White.
Audiences will venture into the terrifying Black Forest when the
Missoula Children’s Theatre and more than 50 local students
perform an original musical adaptation of Snow White and the Seven
Dwarfs. A team of two professional actor/directors will arrive in
our community at the beginning of the week with a set, costumes,
props and make-up—everything it takes to put on a play, except the
cast. The weeklong residency begins with an open group audition
on Monday, August 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the HCTC First Federal
Center and culminates with matinee school performances on Friday
and a public evening performance on Saturday. Around 50 to 60
students in grades 1–12 are cast and well rehearsed throughout
the week, learning lines, songs and choreography to perform as
an ensemble in producing a full-length musical. MCT will conduct
theatre workshops in area schools for any grade level. See the Arts

Alison Brown has achieved success in many areas: a Harvard
graduate, record label co-founder and owner, mother, and, the role
that most people know her in: banjo virtuoso. An internationally
recognized musician with a wide-reaching and loyal fan base, Brown
first came to national prominence when she was asked by Alison
Krauss to join her band Union Station in 1989. Brown had already
made a name for herself prior to that by performing extensively
with fiddler Stuart Duncan, and on occasional pick-up sessions with
artists such as Vince Gill, Byron Berline and John Hickman. Brown’s
journey to a professional music career took a detour while she
attended Harvard, studying history and literature, then UCLA, where
she secured an MBA and went to work as an investment banker.
After taking a hiatus to return to composing and recording music,
Brown assembled the material for her solo debut, the GRAMMY
nominated Simple Pleasures. A three-year stint with Alison Krauss
and Union Station and a year serving as band leader for Michelle
Shocked followed as did bluegrass music’s highest accolade for an
instrumentalist: the International Bluegrass Music Association Banjo
Player of the Year in 1991. Alison will perform an evening public
concert at HCTC’s Leslie County Center after conducting workshops
& master classes at the HCTC Kentucky School of Bluegrass &
Traditional Music.

In celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the start of the Civil War,
the Performing Arts Series is proud to present Barter Theatre for
a third season. Hear the stirring and passionate true stories of the
people who lived through the greatest conflict in our nation’s history
as told in their own words and woven with traditional music of the
period that will inspire you in ways you never thought possible.
This play is filled with the courage, sacrifice, personal suffering and
triumph of the people and time that galvanized our nation, giving
a perspective on the Civil War that is not contained in any history
books. In addition to this public evening performance Barter Theatre
will be presenting a matinee performance for area students and the
public to attend, and a workshop is available at an area school. See

Barter Theatre’s production of Civil War Voices will kick off a whole
weekend of local historical events commemorating the Civil War
Anniversary. The Battle of Leatherwood Reenactment and related
events will take place Fri., Oct. 21, 2011 through Sun., Oct. 23, 2011.

Hugh X. Lewis was born in Yeaddiss, Kentucky. Always hovering
on the fringe of the country music establishment, steel-mill worker
turned songwriter, Lewis wrote some chart topping singles during
the mid to late ‘60s including “BJ the DJ” with singer Stonewall
Jackson who took the novelty song to number one in 1964. Before
long Lewis’ often tongue-in-cheek songs were being recorded by
the Nashville establishment with some regularity. He’s had songs
recorded by Charley Pride, Del Reeves, Jim Ed Brown, Little Jimmy
Dickens, Lynn Anderson and many more. His experience, along
with a career that includes television and movie credits, induction
to both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Kentucky Music Hall
of Fame, have provided him a wealth of knowledge and music to
share.

The Grascals have quickly become one of bluegrass and country
music’s rising stars. Since their debut album in 2004, The Grascals
have been nominated for two Grammy® Awards, received the
SPBGMA’s 2011 Instrumental Group of the Year, SPBGMA’s 2010
Bluegrass Band of the Year, SPBGMA’s 2009 Album of the Year
and IBMA’s (2007, 2006) Entertainer of the Year. Their cutting-edge
modern bluegrass is delivered with a deep knowledge of, and
admiration for, the work of the music’s founding fathers. Timely
yet timeless, The Grascals make music that is entirely relevant
to the here and now, yet immersed in traditional values of soul
and musicianship. Also performing will be The Roys. Blending
proficiency and passion into a musically intoxicating package, The
Roys’ debut with LONESOME WHISTLE (Rural Rhythm Records),
is a spirited set that showcases these siblings’ stellar vocals, taut
musicianship and enviable songwriting skills. The video for one
of the album’s releases “Coal Minin’ Man” was shot in Hazard,
Kentucky using local miners from Teco Coal Company. Student
ensembles from HCTC’s Kentucky School of Bluegrass and
Traditional Music will open the evening show.

Eastern Kentucky University, a partner in the University Center
of the Mountains, will bring their concert choir to Hazard for a
performance and outreach opportunity that will involve area
schools in a choral festival and public evening Christmas
concert performance. Area school chorus programs will have the
opportunity to work on music selections during the fall semester
to rehearse and perform with EKU’s University Singers. See the

The Atlanta Rhythm Section (ARS) released 15 albums of excellent
original material, and consistently perform entertaining live shows.
Their biggest hits include So Into You, Champagne Jam, Imaginary
Lover and Spooky. ARS was paired with contemporaries Lynyrd
Skynyrd as the successors to the Allman Brothers - carrying the
mantle of “Southern Rock”. But performing songs that were more
musically diverse and having hits that had a softer, pop sound, the
“Southern Rock” label was a mixed blessing of many of their unique
musical accomplishments. They shared musical stylings with the
Eagles and Fleetwood Mac - both in the quality of songwriting and
recorded performances. They were excellent musicians who tried to
stretch themselves - think Steely Dan or Little Feat. In many ways,
these associations make as much or more sense than any grouping
with their Southern Rock kindred. So, if you want an introduction or
re-introduction to a great band and a lot of wonderful music, don’t
miss this Valentine’s Day concert.

LTH presents “The 4 Seasons of Comedy.” This season the local
theatre company will present short comedies that will occur in each
of the seasons. By producing multiple short plays, the theatre
hopes to involve more community members who would love to be
a part of a show but can’t commit to 6-7 weeks of rehearsals. Each
skit will require 2-3 weeks of commitment that can be designed
around schedules. Contact director Terry Thies, 606-436-2848, if
you are interested in auditioning or being a part of the backstage
crew for this show. Rehearsals for the show will begin in January,
2012.

“A Taste of Hazard”
featuring Appalatin
Thursday, April 12, 2012 – 6:30 p.m.

Sample the best food in Eastern Kentucky prepared by some of
the finest chefs and cooks in the region while enjoying a great
evening of entertainment with Appalatin. Hazard native Steve
Sizemore returns to his home as percussionist for Appalatin, which
was formed in 2006 in Louisville through band members’ mutual
love of the folk music sounds of Latin America and the Caribbean. Appalatin’s original music is a fusion of Latin and Appalachian
folk music from the band member’s homelands in Central
America, the Andes and Appalachia. Instrumentation features
the guitar, charango, mandolin, Andean flutes, bongos, congas,
and cajón. Their songs reflect messages of freedom, community,
empowerment, human rights, spirituality, and environmental
stewardship. This collaborative event with the Performing Arts
Series will assist with raising funding support for the Hazard
Perry County Community Ministries (HPCCM). HPCCM’s services
help families in need live safe, self-sustaining, and independent
lives. Their programs include: Corner Haven Crisis Center;
Family Support; Permanent and Transitional Rental Housing; New
Beginnings Child Development Center; and Starland School Age

Makalani Bandele has been a member of the Affrilachian Poets since
2008. His poetry has been anthologized in My Brother’s Keeper and
The Storytellers, and has been picked for upcoming issues of the
African-American Review and Mythium Literary Magazine. He is a
winner of the Ernest Sandeen Prize for Poetry. He has self-published
a chapbook called The Cadence of Echoes; a forthcoming book with
Willow Books will be out Fall 2011 tentatively entitled The Old, the
New, the Borrowed, and the Blues. Bandele will lead three sessions at
the Spring Writers Conference.

Amy Greene will lead three fiction workshops at the Spring Writers
Conference. She was born and raised in the foothills of East
Tennessee’s Smoky Mountains. Her debut novel Bloodroot was a
New York Times national bestseller and won the 2010 Weatherford
Award for Appalachian literature. Her second novel, Long Man, is
forthcoming also from Knopf.
Gurney Norman will offer three short fiction workshops at 2012 Spring
Writers Conference. Norman is the author of Kinfolks: the Wilgus
Stories and the novel Divine Right’s Trip; and he is also a contributing
editor of Back Talk from Appalachia: Confronting Stereotypes and An
American Vein: Critical Readings in Appalachian Literature.
