Touring now for over 30 years their mission is the development of life skills through participation in the performing arts. Some of the characteristics attained through participation in this unique and educational MCT residency project are creativity, social skills, goal achievement, communication skills, and selfesteem. A team of two professional Actor/Directors will arrive in our community at the beginning of the week with a set, costumes, props, and make-up, everything it takes to put on a play, except the cast. The weeklong residency begins with an open group audition on Monday, August 13 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the HCTC First Federal Center and culminates with matinee school performances on Friday and a public evening performance on Saturday. Fifty to sixty students in grades 1 through 12 are cast and well rehearsed throughout the week, learning lines, songs, and choreography to perform as an ensemble in producing a full-length musical. All of MCT shows are original adaptations of children’s stories and fairytales, a twist on the classical stories that you know and love. Rehearsals are scheduled after school every afternoon/evening Monday through Thursday from 4 to 8:30 p.m., with the final dress rehearsal on Friday morning before the matinee school performances. All cast members will need to be excused from school on the Friday of the matinee school performances. MCT also offers a selection of educational workshops to complement the weeklong residency of Hansel and Gretel. A complete list with workshop titles and descriptions can be sent upon request. Workshops are available for all grade levels, as well as adults, and most workshops can accommodate up to 60 students; with the exception of the Drama Quest workshop for 1st - 2nd grades and the Mime Your Own Business workshop for 9th - 12th grades. These can accommodate up to 30 students in each. The cost of the workshops are $75 each. These can be scheduled at your school during the residency week, on Tuesday - Thursday, August 14 – 16. Kiwanis of Hazard, KY Native American Artist Robert Mirabal Thursday, October 25, 2011 – 11 a.m. • HCTC First Federal Center, Hazard, KY Admission: $3 Two-time GRAMMY Award winner Robert Mirabal lives with his family at the foot of the sacred Taos Mountain in northern New Mexico. Maintaining a traditional life and keeping the centuries-old customs of the Taos Pueblo people, Robert has been described as a Native American “Renaissance Man” - a musician, composer, painter, master craftsman, poet, actor, screenwriter, horseman and farmer - and he travels extensively playing his music all over the world. His dozen albums of traditional music, rock and roll, and spoken word present a contemporary view of American Indian life that is unequaled. Robert is an extremely versatile artist whose purpose is to carry on the traditional life of his Taos Pueblo culture and share it with the world. He is a strong proponent for utilizing traditional arts to create bridges between other cultural art forms and generations. As a solo artist, Robert will be available to conduct workshops and programs in area schools. These programs/workshops can be customized to meet the needs of the individual schools based on many options that Robert has available including, but not limited to, flute making and percussion demonstrations/workshops, as well as programs that introduce students to the native songs, stories and ceremonial dances of the Pueblo people. The cost for workshops / programs at your school range from $50 to $100. A leading proponent of world music, Robert has merged his indigenous American sound with those of Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean, tapping into a planetary pulse with a style that defies categorization. The matinee performance on Thursday will include a full band and dancers blending all of Robert’s influences into a musical landscape that conjures up both the historic and contemporary West. Schools that schedule Robert to come for solo programs/workshops will receive a discounted admission to the matinee performance.
