CONFESSIONS SATURDAYS TUESDAYS 8:30 am to 10:00 am 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm T his weekend we celebrate the great feast of the Baptism of the Lord. In so doing, we officially conclude the liturgical season of Christmas. Since the start of the liturgical year, we have “prepared the way of the Lord” during Advent as we were instructed by John the Baptist and the ancient prophets regarding the Messiah. At Christmas the prophecies were clearly realized in the Incarnation of the Divine Word in the person of Jesus Christ, born at Bethlehem of the Blessed Virgin Mary and by the power of the Holy Spirit. We have reflected on the centrality of Christ in our world and in our lives in the mystery of the Holy Family. Last weekend, we reflected on the adoration by the Magi, who followed Divine Providence and came to bring their gifts to the newborn King. Today’s occasion reminds us through miraculous signs and wonders of God the Father’s “endorsement” and “affirmation” of Jesus, His Son, as the Christ at the River Jordan, from which he would launch into his public ministry as Savior of the world. And so, as we can see, the beginning of our liturgical year has certainly been “jammed packed” with an overview of the great foundations of the story of our salvation in Jesus Christ. Let us, therefore, lend our ears closely. Important it is for us to be grounded in these foundations, as we proceed to journey in the weeks and months ahead, in our liturgical assembly, through the unfolding stages of hearing Jesus’ very words, of savoring them in the proclamation of Holy Scripture, of learning of the lived witness to the faith by the apostolic community and the early Church, and of appropriating the mystery of Christ, and of our own Baptism, into our very lives. Before you know it, we will again be entering deeply into the Paschal Mystery of our Blessed Lord, reflecting on his redemptive suffering, death, and Resurrection. Every element of the story of Jesus is instructive for the Christian life, and for all of the Baptized. May we spiritually insert ourselves into this story anew, applying its insights and graces into our day to day life of faith. It is the mystery of God in history, our history. Let us lend our ears closely. Here at the Church of the Little Flower, we perform more than 500 Baptisms per year. At last count, we have done more than 50,000 baptisms in our 90 year history. Just imagine the impact value of those Baptisms! Tens of thousands of individuals have begun their walk with Christ unto eternity through the waters of Baptism here at Little Flower. The sacramental life of the Church truly is the biggest divine gift in which we can partake, and from which we can all benefit. The sacraments draw us into closer conformity with Jesus Christ Himself, and put our feet onto the road to life everlasting. That very grace enriches our lives even now, as we delve more and more deeply into the meaning of our own Baptism. Whether it be the water (symbol of cleansing and divine washing), holy oil (symbol of marking, protecting, and strengthening for battle), the white baptismal garment (symbol of our pristine new identity in Christ), and the baptismal candle (symbol of Christ, Light of the World, illumining our life, and the path ahead); all the symbols of Baptism speak of our new found life in Christ Jesus, born at Bethlehem, baptized at the River Jordan, inviting us to deeply share the journey. The mystery of God in the history of our lives invites us to lend our ears closely. 2711 Indian Mound Trail Coral Gables, Florida 33134 Phone: (305) 446-9950 www.cotlf.org Mrs. Irma Aguilar Ext. 300 Ext. 306 Congratulations to our Newly Baptized: Ryder James Bruns, Tomas Michel de Vallois, Carolina Isaza de la Roche, Nicolas Haiko Rodriguez, Antonella Marie Dilone, Annabel Josephine Arboleda, Daniel Antonio Gago Angelico, Mariana Loures Vadia, Bradford Daniel Ulloa Ext. 311 Congratulations and God’s Blessings to those Joined in Holy Matrimony: Receptionist Data Processing Coordinator Mrs. Maria Elena Chialastri Office Manager Administrative Assistant to the Pastor Mr. Luis Cuza Associate Director of Liturgical Music Mr. Juan Del Sol Wedding Coordinator Dr. Dawn Fontana Ext. 305 Director of Liturgical Music Ms. Cecilia Miyar Ext. 310 Administrative Assistant to the DRE Parish Coordinator of Ministries Mr. Jorge Perez Rest in Peace. They may wonder if you have had any Elvis sightings lately, attended Star Trek conventions, or were Cleopatra in a previous lifetime. Despite the skeptics, today is solidly within the Christmas season. In fact, in some strands of the Christian tradition it represents the clearest manifestation of the mystery of the Incarnation. On Christmas Day, for example, the Gospel reading is the Prologue of John’s Gospel, which reveals the glory of Christ shining through our humanity precisely in his baptism. At any rate, this is an ancient feast, celebrated first in Egypt sixteen centuries ago. More than most other ancient people, the Egyptians understood the life-giving properties of water. On this day, they drew water from the Nile, so central in the history of their people, and reserved it in honor. Many other places copied the custom, so that St. John Chrysostom wrote of people in Antioch gathering at midnight to collect flowing water into vessels they brought from home since “today there is a blessing on the water.” At home for dinner tonight, decorate the table with beautiful bowls of water and white candles, toast one another with goblets of sparkling water, and light a Christmas candle in the window one last time. —Rev. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Saturday, February 13th, 7:30pm Church of the Little Flower - Comber Hall Cocktail Reception • Open Bar All Night Live Entertainment 3-Course Meal by Fetes & Events Catering More Information Coming Soon! Several months ago, Pope Francis announced a Jubilee Year of Mercy, which is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, December 8th and will last until November 2016. It will be an excellent opportunity to renew our spiritual lives through the Lord’s gracious gift of mercy and new life. The faith can be studied and learned more deeply during this time and lived more profoundly, the decision to go to confession can be made with greater courage and spiritual benefit, Marriages can be regularized and solemnized by the Church, and people can enhance the quality of their lives in Christ by living the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. Here at the Church of the Little Flower, we will be implementing a new confession timeslot for the convenience of our community. Every Tuesday evening at 7:00pm, at least one priest will be available in the confessional in church, ready and available to hear confessions and assist people in receiving the mercy of the Lord. Come receive mercy on Tuesday nights during the Jubilee Year of Mercy! Designed for the retired and the mature at heart, parishioners of the Church of the Little Flower are invited to take a spiritual fieldtrip, a morning “local” pilgrimage bus trip to two of the Archdiocesan locations which have the Jubilee Year Holy Doors. The details of the excursion, planned for Thursday, March 31st, are still being formulated, yet a basic structure would be the following: 9:15am 10:00am 10:45am 11:15am 12:15pm 12:45pm 1:45pm 2:15pm Departure from Little Flower Arrival at first parish with a Jubilee Holy Door, tour and a brief prayer service Departure Arrival at Saint Mary’s Cathedral. Pass through Holy Door, tour, and Mass Departure for Restaurant Buffet Lunch Departure Return to Little Flower Bus ticket, spiritual program, and lunch included, available for $49.95 To get your name on the list, please call our Director of Advancement, Jorge Perez, 305-446-9950. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Next week we will welcome Father Fidelis Uko (pronounced “who coe”), a priest from Nigeria who is a fulltime doctoral student at Saint Thomas University. He will live in residence at the parish rectory house. Father Uko will be on the rotational schedule of Masses and confessions, and be available for appointments at the parish office. Welcome Father Uko! ARCHBISHOP’S CHARITIES DRIVE As we begin the 2016 year, let us reflect on the many blessings in our lives. When we truly believe that all we have is a gift from God, then we must be willing to give up some things so that we can share our blessings as God intended. Living a stewardship lifestyle means not only being responsible for our own life, but the lives of others as well. Jesus teaches us that we are called to serve one another. Sacrifice is not a word that many people like to hear. We think it means that we must give up something that we want. However, the literal meaning of sacrifice is “to make holy,” from the words of “sacer” meaning sacred and “facere” meaning to make. In other words, we make our lives holy by sharing our gifts in the service of God. Soon we will be asking you to make a contribution to this year’s ABCD, please take this time to prayerfully consider what sacrificial gift you will be able to place at God’s service. If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all. - Mark 9:35 As hard as it is to believe, Lent begins on February 10th with Ash Wednesday. Among the spiritual opportunities that will help us during our Lenten journey will be evenings of reflection done on Wednesday nights with Father Tran. Mark your calendars. Catholic Casseroles return on February 17th & 24th and March 2nd & 9th. You bring a dish for the potluck dinner. Lenten reflections by Father Tran will follow. A lovely way to enter into the spirit of Lent and community. Gracious supervised by the Son Flower Hospitality Ministry. Contact the Ministries Office for more information. With the Feast of Saint John Bosco on January 31st, we begin Catholic Schools Week, an excellent annual opportunity to reflect on the value and impact of Saint Theresa Catholic School, as well as the importance of the Church’s catechetical mission to young people done in an exemplary way through the ministry of our system of Catholic schools. Consider enrolling your son, daughter, or grandkids in a Catholic school today! A new initiative will soon begin, wherein each of the 49 parish ministries will take a turn in staffing the Information Booth (in front of church) each weekend before and after Masses. It will give the ministry an opportunity to showcase its services, welcome new members, raise consciousness about the mission, and offer words of greeting and welcome to all who join us for weekend worship. Contact the Ministries Office for more information.
