Lake Simcoe Conservation Foundation
Hope for Lake Simcoe I n my 63 years on this lake I have watched it steadily decline. During my six year term on the Lake Simcoe Conservation Foundation (LSCF) Board of Directors it has been my ambition to witness and be a small part of some positive change. This year the Federal Government announced $30 million dollars to clean up Lake Simcoe. The Provincial Government announced legislation and is moving toward a Lake Simcoe Protection Act. Municipal governments are making a healthier environment a higher priority in their operations and budgets. Involvement of all three levels of government means that your dollar goes further. As a result of this positive change we have an extraordinary opportunity to leverage funding and get closer to a restored cold water fishery and a healthier Lake Simcoe environment. It is my belief that the only way to accomplish this goal is to work hand and hand with the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority. Why? They have the best scientists, they understand the Board Members Debby Beatty President Doug Blakey Vice President Ernie Crossland Past President Financial Highlights Summary of Revenues and Expenditures problems and they bring forward concrete solutions. The LSCF’s role is to help provide the resources to them in order to get the job done. For the first time since I have been involved, I can see that the combined efforts of all levels of government and the private sector are working together for a common result. This gives me enough HOPE to think that the lake I leave behind for my grandchildren, who happen to be the 6th generation, will have fish that can reproduce, clean water to swim in, shorelines that allow turtles and frogs to come and go....in other words memories of what life was like for me as a young child. Thank you for being a part of this extraordinary work! With the launch of the $17 million campaign in October, local students politicians and residents enjoyed and fantastic guided walk down the East Holland River, followed by a celebration at George Richardson Park in Newmarket. Together over 300 watershed residents were able to ask questions from LSRCA staff about river channelization, storm water management ponds, buffer zones and protecting drinking water at the source. These combined activities are how rivers and streams are cleaned up. Under the leadership of Gayle Wood, CAO of the LSRCA all municipalities in the East Holland subwatershed made a five year the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority and the City of Barrie to host a community planting day. This project resulted in The Foundation’s commitment to helping young people improved fish habitat, one learn to protect and respect their natural world remains. acre of greenspace in downOur donors helped provide $30,000 in 2007 to help town Barrie and 300 metres enhance the programs and infrastructure at the Professor of restored streamchannel, Mrs. Eileen Potter proudly planting “her very E.A. Revenue Sources (Total unaudited revenues $698,692) Donations of over $50,000 either as a one time gift or over several years will secure your spot in our President’s Circle. Our President’s Circle is made up of a group of individuals who have made a healthy Lake Simcoe a priority in their charitable giving. This year our President’s circle enjoyed a unique three hour boat tour of Lake Simcoe, courtesy of Crate Marine and Sales. The day was stormy but our spirits were high as we learned from the LSRCA scientists about their nomination for the international Theiss riverprize award, the Geological survey of Kempenfelt Bay and the weed survey in Cook’s Bay. Kidds Creek Neighbours - The community now has a sense of ownership and pride for this project. The Mouth of Kidds Creek is Restored “I was so pleased to look out my window and see a blue heron in Kidds Creek” Barrie waterfront resident. This year the campaign to restore Kidds Creek was completed. The Foundation brought forward approximately $200,000 of cash and inkind support for this project and in the fall we worked with Christmas at Santa’s Fishing Cabin A truly one of a kind experience was offered to children who visited Vaughan Mills Shopping Centre in December of 2007. We were grateful for the opportunity to partner with Vaughan Mills Shopping Centre to create Santa’s Fishing Cabin. While waiting to see Santa children learned about the water cycle, how to protect fish habitat and how to take care of the environment. Instead of sitting on Santa’s knee children went fishing with Santa and caught a nice big “bass”. The entire experience was video taped and rather then being charged families were asked to make a donation to the Lake Simcoe Conservation Foundation. $189,948 $618,409 $10,058 $818,415 Deferred Contribution Liabilities Current Payables and accruals Donations (includes due to LSRCA of $77,959) Deferred contributions $660,153 Fundraising Events Net Assets Unrestricted Expenditures (Total unaudited expenditures $648,851) Transfer to Reserves $81,340 $578,813 $158,262 $818,415 Fundraising Events Audited 2007 Financial Statements are available on request. Other Thank You LSRCA Staff Administration Lake Clean Up Projects LSRCA staff – those who are already working extraordinary hours to clean up the water draining lake simcoe – have donated a total of approximately $7,000 in 2007 through denim days and payroll deductions. This sends a very clear message to us all. The work we do is important. Thanks to the LSRCA staff for this outstanding commitment. The President’s Circle members will be offered more opportunities like this annually and we look forward to expanding this group. Students getting involved with the East Holland Clean up Campaiign. One unique aspect of this campaign is that as soon as funds are raised they go straight to work. In 2007 the LSCF provided over $183,000, which was then leveraged with municipal and LSRCA funds to result in over 49 projects either completed or started. Over $900,000 went into a cleaner East Holland River and Lake Simcoe in year one of this campaign. Getting Results T he LSCF continues to experience growth and success. Our revenue from private donations is continuing to climb with an average of 34% per year since 2004. We raise these funds through events like our annual George R. Richardson Conservation Dinner, direct mail and donations we receive through our website. Special thank you to Vaughan Mills and Bass Pro Shop for their support. Left to right: Dave Jessop (Bass Pro Shop), Santa (North Pole), Jamie McClean (Vaughan Mills), Debby Beatty & Tim Crooks (LSCF) This year we started accepting donations of publicly traded securities with over $150,000 donated in December of 2007. Why are people donating this way? The capital gains tax is eliminated and you receive a charitable tax receipt for the market value. It is as simple as an electronic transfer to our brokerage account. We raise money to spend in a responsible and effective way. In 2007 over $380,000 of private donations were invested in clean up projects around Lake Simcoe. This is more than triple the investment we were able to make just three years ago. We know that leveraged funding and partnerships are an important part of achieving results and in 2007 the LSCF made great strides on behalf of our donors. We are committed to the highest standards in the charitable sector and we look forward to continued growth in 2008. Thank you for joining us on this journey.
