CANDIDATES GRADUATING WITH HONORS
Undergraduate candidates wearing gold honor cords over their graduation robes are students who have achieved, in
the course of their studies at the university, an overall grade point average that qualifies them to be recognized by
their school or college as candidates graduating with honors. These candidates are identified in the following lists by
the phrase “With Honors,” “With High Honors,” “With Distinction,” “With High Distinction,” or “With Academic
Distinction” depending on the particular degree program. These honor designations are subject to revision based on final
semester grades. Graduating with honors recognizes a superior level of ability, a high distinction of scholarship, and an
exemplary record of achievement.
College of Arts & Sciences (CAS)
Within the CAS, “With Honors” indicates a 3.5 grade point average but less than 3.75. Students listed “With High
Honors” must earn a 3.75 or better overall grade point average. In computing averages, only courses taken at UM-Flint
are included, and only completed terms or semesters are counted.
School of Management (SOM)
Graduating seniors with cumulative grade point averages of at least 3.5 but less than 3.75 are recommended for the
degree “With Honors” and those with cumulative grade point averages of at least 3.75 are recommended for the degree
“With High Honors.” In computing averages, only courses taken at UM-Flint are included, and only completed terms
are counted.
School of Health Professions & Studies (SHPS)
Within the SHPS, “With Honors” indicates a 3.5 grade point average or better overall with a minimum of 45 hours of
study completed at UM-Flint. Students listed “With High Honors” must earn a 3.75 or better grade point average overall
with a minimum 45 hours of study completed at UM-Flint. Students with a 3.5 grade point average or better with fewer
than 45 hours of study at UM-Flint will earn “With Academic Distinction.”
School of Education & Human Services (SEHS)
Within the SEHS, “With Honors” indicates a 3.5 grade point average but less than 3.75 overall. Students listed “With
High Honors” must earn a 3.75 or better overall grade point average. In computing averages, only courses taken at
UM-Flint are included, and only complete terms or semesters are counted.

UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN-FLINT
Since 1956, the University of Michigan-Flint has offered students an outstanding educational experience. As part of the
world-renowned University of Michigan system, faculty and staff are committed to the development of the next generation
of “Leaders and Best.”
Cooperation between the community and the University of Michigan brought about the opening of a two-year senior
college (located on the land now occupied by Mott Community College) in 1956, which offered baccalaureate degree
programs in the liberal arts and sciences, and in the professional fields of education and business administration.
Approximately 167 junior students enrolled the first semester.
In 1970, the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools accredited the Flint College. In 1971, the Regents officially
changed the name of the institution to the University of Michigan-Flint. That same year, University of Michigan
President Robben Fleming appointed the first Chancellor of the University of Michigan-Flint, William E. Moran.
The university eventually moved to property in the heart of downtown Flint, building a riverfront campus of modern
buildings and amenities for its growing student population. UM-Flint became a residential campus in 2008 when 300
students moved into its first residence hall. As its roots grow deeper, the university’s impact continues to expand. In early
2016, UM-Flint re-opened the downtown ice rink that had been unused for 25 years. On March 31, 2016, UM-Flint took
ownership of the 340,000 square foot Riverfront Residence Hall and Banquet Center—which houses UM-Flint’s School
of Management—and more than doubled the capacity of on-campus housing to 800 students. That same day, UM-Flint
completed its purchase of one of the FirstMerit Bank buildings across the street from Riverfront. Combined, the two
buildings increased the campus space by 25 percent.
Today, nearly 8,500 students are enrolled at UM-Flint. These students come from Michigan, across the nation, and from
more than 40 countries around the globe. Students come to UM-Flint to learn from faculty in more than 100 areas of
study. Faculty pour their expertise and creativity into the development of research and service learning projects that match
course curriculum with the world’s most pressing issues. Such projects bring learning to life, address community needs,
and fulfill students’ desires to contribute to the collective common good. For these efforts, UM-Flint has been honored
with both the Engaged Campus of the Year award from Michigan Campus Compact, as well as the prestigious Carnegie
Classification for Civic Engagement.
SPANNING THE CENTURIES
UM-Flint will mark its 60th Anniversary on
September 23, 2016. Over six decades, UM-Flint
has become an integral part of downtown
Flint and an anchor for the entire Flint region,
drawing students from the surrounding area and
from across the world.
This milestone brings opportunities to remember
the past, examine the present, and envision
the future.
The anniversary for the UM-Flint marks the first
creation of a satellite campus by the University
of Michigan. It also closely coincides with the
event surrounding the celebration of the
University of Michigan bicentennial celebration.
Taking full advantage of the moment, UM-Flint
has formed a committee charged with developing
a set of programs and activities to celebrate the
landmark moment.

11 A.M. STUDENT SPEAKER:
SAYDEE ROBINSON
Saydee Robinson never intended to study social work when she enrolled at University
of Michigan-Flint in Fall 2013.
But after taking an introductory course and speaking with faculty, Robinson took the
leap and has never regretted her choice.
“I love it,” Robinson said. “It was the best decision I could have made.”
Robinson is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in social work. She is a recipient of the
Maize and Blue Distinguished Scholar Award, the highest academic award bestowed upon UM-Flint graduates.
During her career at UM-Flint, Robinson has taken on a leadership role in the student social work club, volunteered at
the North End Soup Kitchen, and for foster support services. She spent her senior year interning at Samaritas, formerly
known as Lutheran Social Services of Michigan. Her social work knowledge, forged at UM-Flint, helped her with trips not
associated with the university, including work in Haiti at orphanages and a medical facility.
Robinson, who is taking a year off from school, before pursuing further studies, said faculty and her peers at UM-Flint
helped her succeed.
“I feel we have really good faculty,” Robinson said. “They all have awesome experience that has allowed us to grow with
our skills.”
3 P.M. STUDENT SPEAKER:
HOLLY KILBURN
Holly Kilburn made a decision. She wanted more for her and her young son. She was
working as a store manager in a fast food establishment but wanted to forge a career in
human resources. So Kilburn enrolled at UM-Flint in the Winter 2014 semester.
Her experience has been “phenomenal”, said Kilburn, who graduates with a Bachelor
of Business Administration in Human Resources, Management and Organizational
Behavior.
Kilburn is a recipient of the Maize and Blue Distinguished Scholar Award, the highest
academic award bestowed upon UM-Flint graduates. During her university career, Kilburn has also worked full-time as a
compliance coordinator for a charter school management company, and has raised her son. She thanks UM-Flint faculty
for being flexible and understanding regarding her schedule and obligations.
Kilburn has been active on campus, including participating in University Outreach Service Saturdays, and with the
UM-Flint chapter of Society for Human Resources Management.
“UM-Flint offers so many things,” she said. “It is really hard not to get involved.”

THE ACADEMIC MACE AND MEDALLION
University of Michigan-Flint ceremonies begin with the Faculty Marshal carrying the university mace. Friends presented
the University of Michigan-Flint mace to the institution in 1993. The shaft is four and one-half feet in length and is
made of mahogany. The brass orb on top of the shaft is hollow and circumscribed with a band bearing the name of the
institution. Within the orb is a paper bearing the names of those who contributed to the funding of the mace and atop the
orb is a brass disk inscribed with the seal of the University of Michigan-Flint.
Chancellor Susan E. Borrego was presented with the Medallion on behalf of Academic Affairs upon her arrival to
the University of Michigan-Flint as Chancellor and prior to her inauguration. The Medallion is a bronze disk that
shows the seal of the University of Michigan-Flint that is worn around the neck during formal ceremonial events such
as Commencement.
THE UNIVERSITY FLAG
The Flag of the University of Michigan-Flint represents the individual character
of the campus and its close association with the University of Michigan. The
“union” next to the staff, which identifies the University of Michigan both by its
colors and its legend, is overlapped by the “device.” The uniting by this means of
“union” and “field” indicates the bond between University of Michigan-Flint and
the other schools of the university and the common purpose they share. The legend
“Flint,” delineated in the university colors at the flag’s own left, complements
the “union.” The “field” takes its colors from a part of the varicolored flame of
the search for truth. The “device,” derived from the University seal, is the lamp
of enlightenment resting on the book of learning. The white of the device’s own
field supplies a philosophic association as the color of humane letters and a historic
association as the color of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, parent
college of all.

The colorful gowns and hoods worn by faculty members at commencement and other academic ceremonies represent
the degrees, disciplines, and alma maters of the wearers. The American academic costume tradition, imported from
England, dates to Colonial days.
Gowns - The style of the academic gown differs with the academic degree it represents. The bachelor gown has plain,
full sleeves and is without velvet facing down the front. The masters and specialist gowns are identified by long narrow
sleeves that are “blind” at the cuff, with slits at elbow-length for the arms. The doctoral gown has full sleeves with velvet
chevrons and velvet facing down the front.
Academic gowns are usually black, but some universities permit gowns in the school’s colors. The velvet trimming on
the doctor’s gowns is traditionally black, though some universities (including the University of Michigan-Flint) permit
the velvet to be of the color distinctive of the discipline to which the degree pertains.
Hoods - The masters hood (short), specialist hood (intermediate), and the doctoral hood (long) carry the distinctive
design and the colors of the university where the degree was awarded.
The doctoral, specialist, and masters hoods for University of Michigan-Flint candidates have the following velvet colors:
Accounting, Business Administration........................................................ drab
Education........................................................................................... light blue
Literature and Arts.................................................................................... white
Nursing................................................................................................... apricot
Physical Therapy.......................................................................................... teal
Public Administration .................................................................. peacock blue
Public Health.......................................................................................... salmon
Science........................................................................................ golden yellow
Caps - Caps vary in style from the traditional black mortarboard to eight-, six-, and four-corner tams, and Elizabethanstyle caps. The mortarboard may be of any appropriate material, such as cotton, poplin, rayon, or silk, to match the
gown. Velvet is reserved for holders of doctorates. A long tassel is fastened to the middle point of the top of the cap.
Other Apparel - Several graduates are wearing cords or sashes as part of the academic costume. Other than the
gold cords that stand for graduating with honors, some of the cords and sashes indicate academic achievement in the
other areas such as Service Learning. Other cords and sashes are awarded to students for their participation in clubs
and organizations.

The colorful gowns and hoods worn by faculty members at commencement and other academic ceremonies represent
the degrees, disciplines, and alma maters of the wearers. The American academic costume tradition, imported from
England, dates to Colonial days.
Gowns - The style of the academic gown differs with the academic degree it represents. The bachelor gown has plain,
full sleeves and is without velvet facing down the front. The masters and specialist gowns are identified by long narrow
sleeves that are “blind” at the cuff, with slits at elbow-length for the arms. The doctoral gown has full sleeves with velvet
chevrons and velvet facing down the front.
Academic gowns are usually black, but some universities permit gowns in the school’s colors. The velvet trimming on
the doctor’s gowns is traditionally black, though some universities (including the University of Michigan-Flint) permit
the velvet to be of the color distinctive of the discipline to which the degree pertains.
Hoods - The masters hood (short), specialist hood (intermediate), and the doctoral hood (long) carry the distinctive
design and the colors of the university where the degree was awarded.
The doctoral, specialist, and masters hoods for University of Michigan-Flint candidates have the following velvet colors:
Accounting, Business Administration........................................................ drab
Education........................................................................................... light blue
Literature and Arts.................................................................................... white
Nursing................................................................................................... apricot
Physical Therapy.......................................................................................... teal
Public Administration .................................................................. peacock blue
Public Health.......................................................................................... salmon
Science........................................................................................ golden yellow
Caps - Caps vary in style from the traditional black mortarboard to eight-, six-, and four-corner tams, and Elizabethanstyle caps. The mortarboard may be of any appropriate material, such as cotton, poplin, rayon, or silk, to match the
gown. Velvet is reserved for holders of doctorates. A long tassel is fastened to the middle point of the top of the cap.
Other Apparel - Several graduates are wearing cords or sashes as part of the academic costume. Other than the
gold cords that stand for graduating with honors, some of the cords and sashes indicate academic achievement in the
other areas such as Service Learning. Other cords and sashes are awarded to students for their participation in clubs
and organizations.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
Dear Graduates,
On behalf of the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan and the University of Michigan Club of Greater Flint,
it is my pleasure to congratulate you on your graduation and welcome you to membership in the Alumni Association.
While you have spent the past several years closely linked to the University of Michigan-Flint campus, your Michigan
community just got a lot bigger as you are joining one of the largest alumni bodies in the world!
During your time on campus, UM-Flint has enjoyed remarkable expansion. From growth in the student body to the
acquisition of adjacent properties, UM-Flint has continued to enlarge its footprint in the city and beyond. I encourage
you to stay in touch and remain connected to campus through the Alumni Association.
Our programs provide a great opportunity to maintain friendships with classmates and faculty, share memories, and
engage with fellow UM-Flint alums. Together, alumni make a difference by advocating for UM-Flint, mentoring
students, volunteering at events such as Go Blue on the Bricks, and sharing our Michigan pride!
As a graduate of UM-Flint, you will automatically receive a free one-year membership to the University of Michigan
Alumni Association. We encourage you to take advantage of the benefits associated with this membership.
