Subaru Automotive Business 1.Brand Statement: “Confidence in Motion” In November, 2010 Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), announced the establishment of a new global brand statement, “Confidence in Motion”, as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance the Subaru brand. “Confidence” reflects Subaru’s attitude toward engineering excellence and the trust generated among drivers by following through on its commitment to provide both enjoyment and peace of mind. “in Motion” expresses Subaru’s resolve to continue innovating to meet customer expectations in a world of constant change. Subaru will proactively address global environmental issues and the demands of ever-maturing automobile use. Subaru believes automobiles should be more than just a means of simple transportations. They should also be a source of enjoyment, and enjoyment rests on a foundation of peace of mind. These two inseparable values are central to the Subaru experience. As customer expectations are diversifying, Subaru will foresee these needs with independent thinking and continue to offer enjoyment and peace of mind without losing sight of the essence of what an automobile should be. “Confidence in Motion” expresses Subaru’s aim to continue evolving in order to offer even more customers new ways to enrich their lives through a uniquely satisfying Subaru experience. 2.Subaru Core Technologies Inline Engine ■ Horizontally-Opposed Boxer Engine Horizontally-Opposed The Horizontally-Opposed Engine is an ideal power unit that Subaru Engine has continually promoted to customers. Because the pistons in a Horizontally-Opposed Engine are arranged opposing one another on the V-shaped Engine left and right sides, the inertial force generated by the movement of each piston is cancelled out by the piston on the opposite side. As a result, this engine type provides superior operating balance, and a smooth feeling when revving all the way up to the high-rpm range. In addition, the unique design allows the engine to be more compact, lightweight and fitted deep in the chassis. This also contributes to lowering the Unlike in the inline and V-shaped engines, pistons center of gravity of the vehicle body. Excellent weight balance allows in a horizontally-opposed engine are placed horizontally and symmetrically with the crankshaft the vehicle to corner exactly as the driver wants it to. in the center, which allows the pistons to offset their respective vibrations. ■ Lineartronic (CVT) Lineartronic (CVT) is the world’s first* chain-type CVT that is mounted on mass-produced AWD vehicles. The most prominent advantage of a CVT is that it can actively utilize the most efficient zone of engine revolution. Thanks to the merits of a chain-type Lineartronic that enables a compact design and efficient transmission of power, we can provide not only a natural driving feeling but also a balanced combination of environmental friendliness and driving performance. *: According to our research ■ Symmetrical AWD The low center of gravity resulting from the use of a horizontallyopposed engine is combined with excellent weight balance in all four directions, achieved by collecting heavy items near the center of the vehicle body. This makes it possible to draw out the maximum capability of the AWD system, for unsurpassed driving performance under a wide range of conditions. The vehicle reacts linearly to operation of the steering wheel when cornering, and the high straightline stability yields comfortable high-speed driving that instills a feeling of confidence and security in the driver. Subaru continues to refine and perfect our symmetrical AWD system as the core of a mechanism that can earn drivers’ trust during all types of driving, from everyday city driving to high-speed driving. Transmission Transfer AWD System with a Horizontally-Opposed Engine 15 ■ Subaru’s New Ring-shaped Reinforcement Frames “Subaru’s new ring-shaped reinforcement frames” are intended to prevent cabin deformation under impact by joining strong pillars and frames together in such a way that they surround the cabin. Due to the use of a frame structure with superior ability to absorb impact, reinforcement of all joints and other improvements, this body provides effective impact absorption for front-end collisions. In order to ensure effective impact absorption for rearend collisions, reinforcement is provided by the rear bumper beam, and the rear frame has also been changed to a straight shape, ensuring sufficient crushable space. This contributes to the safety of rear seat occupants in the event of a collision. For side collisions, the center pillar strength balance has been optimized, yielding excellent collision safety performance in all directions. For instances of collisions with pedestrians, the impact absorption capacity of the front bumper has been improved, the front hood framework has been reviewed, and other sweeping steps have been taken to lessen the impact to a pedestrian. The safety performance of Subaru vehicles has been highly evaluated in safety assessments in many countries around the world. Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport & Tourism and National Agency for Automotive Safety & Victim’s Aid awarded the LEGACY “GRANDPRIX 09/10” in JNCAP (Japan New Car Assessment Program) for fiscal 2009. This is the third consecutive year Subaru received the honors, after the IMPREZA was awarded “GRANDPRIX” for fiscal 2007, and FORESTER and EXIGA were awarded “Excellent Car” for fiscal 2008. Overseas, the US New Car Assessment Program awarded its highest rating of five starts for collision performance to the Forester in 2008. The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (covering the Australia and New Zealand regions) also awarded the Forester its top rating of five stars for occupant protection performance, and three stars for pedestrian protection performance. ■ EyeSight (Ver.2) Pre-Crash Safety: Working to Realize a Society without Automobile Accidents The “EyeSight” is Active Driving Assist System, based on the idea of predicting accidents and minimizing the damage caused by collisions. The “EyeSight” was developed with the aim of providing an ultimate level of safety, referred to as “Collisionfree cars.” The “EyeSight” features pre-collision braking control that uses automatic brakes to avoid collisions; adaptive cruise control with all-speedrange tracking functions that helps to maintain a safe distance between vehicles; and a creep suppression and control system that guards against sudden acceleration due to driver’s error of automatic transmission. 16 Perceive whole situations three-dimensionally with stereo cameras Process image information with 3D image processing engine Caution with warning sound and meter indication Control braking as needed Control engine output and transmission as needed ■ Hybrid System Basic layout A logical system that balances all-around performance. The compact and high-performance motor and battery are integrated into the symmetrical AWD layout that represents the pride of Subaru. The hybrid system has been introduced without compromising the quality of bilateral symmetry or the low center of gravity. This helps balance overall vehicle performance at a high level, including not just excellent fuel saving performance and powerful engine performance, but also driving performance, comfort and usability that tends to be sacrificed in conventional hybrid vehicles. Drive motor The same height of the center of gravity, and a whole new driving experience. The heavy-weight motor, a central part for hybridization, is integrated in the transmission case located near the vehicle's center of gravity. High driving performance is obtained by achieving the same height of center of gravity and the same weight distribution in all directions as gasoline vehicles. The high-performance motor with sporty characteristics is available for EV driving using the motor alone, motor-assisted driving, and effective charging using regenerative brakes. Battery unit The compact motor and battery are mounted symmetrically. Excellent weight balance and a low center of gravity are achieved with SUBARU's signature hybrid layout. MOTOR The compact design avoids sacrificing utility. The battery is another central part. The nickel metal hydride battery is integrated with highvoltage parts such as an inverter and a converter as a compact unit, and installed under the cargo room floor. The hybrid system is realized by minimizing the effects on packaging, and at the same time, ensuring the same cabin area and utility as gasoline vehicles. System control BATTERY Offering the hybrid benefits in a variety of scene. Based on the engine driving force, the engine and motor are optimally controlled according to their strengths in certain areas and driving conditions. Excellent fuel economy performance is achieved in various scenes such as driving in the city, driving on the highway, etc. The control status (energy flow) is shown on the multi function display in an easy-to-understand format. 17 3.Product Lineup Model Name (As of July 1, 2013) Photo Product overview A high level of driveability directly affects one’s sensibility of what sportiness is.
