Attracting over 150 members from 25 states since opening last summer, Shooting Star’s members have developed a fond sense of loyalty to their budding community. “They are our marketing department,” said developer and president John Resor. “We invest money in our facilities as opposed to glossy brochures.” The most basic tenet in creating Shooting Star was the simple concept that people are attracted to quality. Thus, it was paramount that Resor, a member of one of Jackson Hole’s oldest ranching families, assemble the most skilled team of professionals from around the world. The choice was clear for golf: Tom Fazio. Renowned for turning flat parcels of land into beautiful rolling terrain, Fazio set out to create a course without obstructions. The course’s track would be physically and visually separate from the residential areas to the north, appealing to the Resors as the course evolved from its past as a cattle ranch. Members enjoy casual conversations or a book of choice before one of Shooting Star’s numerous fireplaces. There are two essential components in creating a world-class course, according to Fazio: a great environment and commitment from the ownership. “In Jackson Hole, we knew we had a special, homestead | 75 This image: Shooting Star’s idyllic setting includes rolling hills, fifty-plus acres of lakes and waterways, and unsurpassed views of the Teton Mountain Range and valley. One of Shooting Star’s many meeting rooms is the perfect space for an intimate meal between family and friends or a formal business meeting. World-class recreational facilities provide members with the best equipment to ensure peak physical performance throughout the year. “In Jackson Hole, we knew we had a special, unique environment...” – Tom Fazio The Alpine Barn houses ski lockers with boot dryers, which accompany Shooting Star’s concierge services to and from the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, enabling members to enjoy the finest in recreation regardless of season. unique environment,” Fazio said, “and once we got to know the Resors, we knew we had the highest level of commitment.” That commitment included 254 acres of land and a budget that enabled Fazio’s team to plant over 2,500 trees, move two million cubic yards of dirt, and sculpt over 50 acres of lakes and waterways. In addition to quality of the utmost order, authenticity would be critical in creating a timeless property. Acclaimed architectural firm Hart Howerton was selected for the creation of the clubhouse, insuring the structure complemented the beauty of the natural environment as best as possible. Hart Howerton also worked closely with cabin architect Paul Bertelli of JLF & Associates. A pioneer in working with reclaimed materials and a proponent of Old World craftsmanship, Bertelli created a distinct style that meshed seamlessly with Hart Howerton’s. From the ground up, meticulous attention and care was dedicated to all aspects of Shooting Star. Whether salvaging materials from Amish barns or assembling trusses from reclaimed Douglas-fir timbers, no aspect was spared inside or out. Even in the creation of Shooting Star’s impressive art collection, artists were commissioned to portray authentic ranch life rather than the romanticized version, remaining true to the gritty lifestyle of the West. One of the most popular structures at Shooting Star is the Alpine Barn. Hosting weddings and other social events in the summer with its adjacent lawn, veranda and tension-edge pool, the Barn is home to heated ski lockers and a concierge service that runs to and from the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort during the winter. Whether looking to challenge one’s self along the steeper runs on Rendezvous Mountain or enjoy a warm summer afternoon at the poolside terrace, Shooting Star has firmly established itself as the area’s premier destination. hs The numerous amenities also include a full-service spa featuring shared spaces for both him and her. homestead | 77
