HISTORy - Silent Drive Inc.
HISTORy In the early 1950’s, when tag axles began to gain popularity, it became evident that they frequently caused traction problems. In an effort to address this problem, a company was started in Sioux City, Iowa in 1956. This company’s answer to the problem was to produce large pulleys and install them between the dual tires of the drive axle and the tag axle. By connecting them with a large V-belt, the drive axle powered the tag axle. Since the tag axle was powered by silent belts instead of noisy gears, the company was named Silent Drive. In 1972, suspension lifts were edging out V-belt drives in the marketplace. Silent Drive was already producing axle lifts, both hydraulic and air. Expanding products meant an expanding facility and in 1974, a facility was constructed in Orange City, Iowa. All operations were moved to the new facility at that time. Since then, Silent Drive has been the innovative leader in the suspension industry. Silent Drive was the first to use the automatic leaf spring lift incorporated into the suspension. Additionally, the concept of unitizing the suspension to an axle for a complete, ready-toinstall system was pioneered by the professionals at Silent Drive. The underarm air spring lift concept, developed over ten years ago by the Silent Drive engineering team, is being adopted by nearly every suspension manufacturer in the nation. Commitment to quality keeps Silent Drive one step ahead of it’s competition. Silent Drive has grown from a regional manufacturer supplying only a few products, primarily to the agricultural market, to an industry leader manufacturing air suspension for liftable tags and pushers, drive axle suspensions, as well as primary and auxiliary lift axles on trailers using state-of-the-art technology including Pro-E software and Finite Element Analysis for design and testing. Expect the most complete product line, including capacity’s from 10,000 to 30,000 pounds with axle lifts from 6 to 18 inches, our patented Uroflex pull arm bushings, and excellent customer service from the industry leader. Expect only the best from Silent Drive. The modification consists in limiting the maximum load on any single axle to 20,000 pounds. 2 The following loaded vehicles must not operate over H15-44 bridges: 3-S2 (5 axles) with wheelbase less than 38 feet; 2-S1-2 (5 axle) with wheelbase less than 45 feet; 3-3 (6 axle) with wheelbase less than 45 feet; and 7-, 8- and 9-axle vehicles regardless of wheelbase. 23 AIR PRESSURE LOAD CHART For use in determining the approximate air pressure required in the air springs to obtain a specific load on the axle AIR PRESSURE (psi) LOAD (lbs) at ground 1255 1355 1455 724 UF1013 UF1008* 115 740 5000 20 28 33 6000 25 35 7000 31 8000 36 9000 41 10000 11000 135 721 727 230 270 290 240 22 28 26 45 42 28 35 33 56 42 51 34 42 40 68 49* 60 39 49 47 80 57 68 45 57 54 92 47 64 77 51 64 61 103 52 71 86 57 71 68 12000 57 78 95 63 78 75 13000 62 86 102 68 86 82 14000 68 93 112 74 93 88 15000 73 100 80 100 96 16000 78 85 17000 84 91 18000 89 97 19000 94 103 20000 100 *UF1008 suspension is limited to a 8,000 lb load rating, therefore the pressure in the air spring is limited to 49 psi. Requires an AC2006 Air Control. The values given above are based on the ride height at the middle of the ride height range. The actual figures may vary depending on the actual suspension mounting height. The values given above are also based on an estimated weight of the axles, wheels and tires of 1200 lbs. Air pressure required will vary based on the axle, wheels and tires used. To obtain an accurate air pressure reading for a specific load, the suspension must be calibrated on a load scale. Silent Drive assumes no responsibility as to the accuracy of the weight of loads based on the above chart. 24 LOADED TIRE SIZE CHART For use in calculating the mounting height of Silent Drive air suspensions TUBE TYPE TUBELESS ISO (METRIC) LOADED TIRE RADIUS 215/75R17.5 14.0 9R17.5 225/70R19.5 15.0 10R17.5 *245/70R19.5 15.5 *265/70R19.5 *285/70R19.5 16.0 7.5R15 8.5R17.5 8.25R15 14.5 10.00R15 7.5R20 16.5 8R22.5 255/70R22.5 245/75R22.5 235/80R22.5 17.0 17.5 8.25R20 9R22.5 265/75R22.5 255/80R22.5 18.0 18.5 10R22.5 295/75R22.5 275/80R22.5 19.0 10.00R20 11R22.5 295/80R22.5 315/80R22.5 385/65R22.5 285/75R24.5 275/80R24.5 19.5 11.00R20 12R22.5 12.00R20 10.00R22 13R22.5 11R24.5 425/65R22.5 11.00R22 12R24.5 445/65R22.5 12.00R22 13R24.5 9.00R20 20.0 20.5 21.0 21.5 *For use only on I-beam axle. Patented UroFlex Bushings A patented, free rotation design, bonds the urethane to the outer sleeve but allows the inner sleeve to rotate. Because of the free rotational design, shear and torsional stress on the bushings is eliminated. (Rubber bushings, on the other hand, are bonded to both the outer and inner sleeve and when the arm rotates, the bushings material is twisted and contorted resulting in high stresses causing premature bushing failure.) In addition, Urethane is a superior polymer which does not breakdown over time from exposure to petroleum products, acids, salts or ozone which damage rubber. Urethane allows the suspension to flex in uneven terrain and cornering, yet resists vehicle roll. 2. High Pivot Point Silent Drive engineers a higher pivot point into most of our pull arms offering unmatched stability during cornering and while operating over uneven terrain. In addition, a high pivot point offers a drastic reduction in frame rail stress. In most cases, our pivot points are as much as 8” to 10” closer to the frame rail. Having the pivot point that close to the frame helps to eliminate most frame rail maintenance. 3. Short Mounting Envelope Silent Drive offers some of the shortest mounting envelopes in the industry. Depending on the application, a Silent Drive suspension will often fit when other suspensions are too large. 4. Under Arm Lift Most Silent Drive suspensions incorporate an under arm positive lift. In addition to quick lift response, an under arm lift offers superb driver comfort and reduced system maintenance. 5. Huck Bolted Pivot Points Most Silent Drive suspensions incorporate huck bolted pull arm and axle seat bushings. Huck bolting is recognized in the industry for it’s durability and lack of maintenance. 6. Double Coil Spring Shocks All steerable Silent Drive suspensions incorporate double coil spring shocks for unsurpassed stability and driver control. 7. Complete Mounting and Installation Kits Silent Drive has kits available for quick and easy installation. These kits include, but are not limited to: mounting hardware, air lines, valves and brake fittings. Depending on the suspension, Silent Drive offers everything you need to do the complete installation. 8. Totally Unitized Axle and Suspension Silent Drive offers our suspensions and axles totally unitized for reduced installation time. A Unitized system includes a regulated inside cab control panel, brake protection check valve, two quick release valves, standard brakes, wheels or hubs, drums, one lower cross member and auto slack adjusters. 9.
