Area name “Yanaka”(Middle of the valley) is believed to have been given before Edo period, reflecting its location in the bottom of the valley between Ueno and Hongo heights. It is said the name was compared with its neighbor area “Shitaya”(Foot of the valley.) Based upon the Edo city plan of the Shogunate policy, many temples were gathered to Yanaka and created town of temples.
