Nissan and Hyundai of Cookeville
Since May of 2011, Nissan of Cookeville has made
strides in customer service, offering new vehicles,
certified pre-owned vehicles, maintenance and mechanical repairs and a rental department.
One reflection of that is the reviews the dealership
has received on Google — a 4.9 rating — along with
the designation of a 5-star dealer award winner from
Edmunds.com and a DealerRater 2015 Consumer Satisfaction Award winner. Nissan of Cookeville has the
number one ranking regarding reviews on Google
than any Nissan dealership in the world!
Owner Mike Rezi, who also recently purchased
Hyundai of Cookeville, has been actively involved in
the community through supporting a variety of activities and groups.
Originally from Florence, Italy, he knows what
preservation is and how everything originates from
downtown. With that in mind, he partnered with
CityScape to bring a renewed sense of pride by being
CityScape’s first Founder Partner.
And that support continues with CityScape, now entering the second year as a Founder Partner.
The dealership is also the major sponsor of
SlideCKVL and last year ’s inaugural Christmas in the
Park festivities.
Other organizations the dealership supports are
Wounded Warrior Project (more than $20,000 donated
last year) and more than $15,000 to the Fraternal
Order of Police to help kids in the community.
It’s just his way of giving back to the community.
Earlier this year, the opportunity to purchase
Hyundai of Cookeville came up. He aims to offer the
same exceptional customer service to those clients,
the same as employees at Nissan do, and take the
dealership into the future with the idea of moving it
into a bigger building sometime in that future.
Hyundai also offers new and certified pre-owned vehicles, as well as a variety of services.

Turner Construction
Company
Turner Construction Company
was founded 114 years ago on
the core values of teamwork,
integrity and commitment—the
same, timeless values that continue to guide the company
today.
The company, founded by
Henry Turner on May 6, 1902,
now has a global reach and provides a number of services to
clients, builds partnerships
within local communities, and
delivers important resources
such as schools, hospitals, work
places and social and cultural
centers.
And all of these services are

local level. Placing a vested and
significant emphasis within the
Cookeville area, Turner is dedicated to participating in community growth, and values its
partnerships with local contractors—some of the best and
most qualified tradesmen in
Tennessee, who care about their
work and take pride in their
product.
Turner Construction has been
in Cookeville since June of
2006 and enjoys the relationships that have been created in
that time with not only contractors, but local subcontractors,
workforce and clients as well.
Turner provides comprehensive management services
through the development, design and construction phases of
general building projects, is the
largest general contractor in the
country and is a leader in major
market segments including
healthcare, aviation/transportation, commercial, education,
government, infrastructure, industrial/manufacturing, pharmaceutical and research and
development, among others.
With a staff of 5,200 employees who work on more than
1,500 projects each year, Turner
offers clients the accessibility
and support of a local firm with
the stability and resources of a
multi-national organization.
Recognized for undertaking
large, complex projects, their
teams foster innovation by embracing emerging technologies
and focusing on construction
management solutions.

Cumberland County
Playhouse
For 50 years now, the Cumberland County Playhouse has
been entertaining guests with
their performances and productions at their Playhouse in
Crossville. This Playhouse also
just happens to be one of the
few theaters in this region that
operate all year long, and is one
of the largest professional theaters in rural America, says
John Fionte, a Cumberland
County Playhouse representative.
Paul and Mary Crabtree are
the founders of the Cumberland
County Playhouse, and it got its
start in 1965 with its debuting
performance Tennessee, USA!
Since its inaugural performance, the Playhouse has had
over 5 million visitors to date,
and has about 100,000 visitors
per year, says Fionte.
Today the Playhouse operates
as a non-profit theater, and is
the largest non-profit theater in
Tennessee.
The Playhouse gets lively and
hectic sometimes since it does
operate all year long. One patron could come in a few nights
in one week and watch four different plays and a concert. But
that’s part of what makes it
great, and allows for patrons to
have more options when deciding on what production or performance to go and see.
The motto of the Playhouse
is “Tennessee’s Family Theater.” The productions at the
Playhouse are typically for
everyone, all ages and tastes included. There’s even ratings of
the productions on the programs given out at the performances.
“While much of our programming is dedicated to productions that are suitable for all
members of the family, we
strive to be inclusive of all families and artistic tastes,” says
Fionte.
Some awards that the Playhouse has won includes being
named a “Major Cultural Institution” by the Tennessee Arts
Commission, “Top Attraction in
Cumberland County” and “Top
Attraction in Crossville” from
the Crossville Chronicle, a
“Spirit of Tennessee Award”
given to Jim Crabtree in 2001,
and a “Governor’s Award in the
Arts” in 1984.
“The Playhouse seeks to create accessible, high-quality theater experiences that have the
potential to touch hearts, open
minds and change lives,” says
Fionte.
The Playhouse welcomes patrons and visitors, and is located at 221 Tennessee Ave.
Crossville, TN.
Health Benefit Solutions
What does it mean to Health Benefit Solutions to be a “Hometown
Business”? Family, Community,
Service … those are just a few words
that come to mind.
Health Benefit Solutions has been
a part of the Upper Cumberland and
surrounding communities for over
30 years and we are proud to continue the service and commitment
that began all those years ago. “We
strive to make certain the needs of
every client are met with great satisfaction.” states Owner, Carrie
Thompson. “We take much pride in
showing how important our clients
are to us.”
Being a Hometown Business
means “truly” listening to your
clients and always going the extra
mile. We want the Upper Cumberland to know just how much we
enjoy being their “go to” agency and
look forward to serving this great
community for many more years…
Are you a hard working mother
and/or father taking care of your
family’s needs, with no access to
employer coverage? Come see us!
So many people do not realize that
if their employer doesn’t offer short
or long term disability coverage, we
can provide that on an individual
basis. Dental and vision coverage,
long term care coverage, life insurance; those policies are all available
on an individual basis. We offer individual medical insurance on and
off Marketplace. We also offer different coverages for those that are
enrolled in Medicare. And the great
thing is; HBS services EVERY policy we sell. You, our client, are our
family and we want to be there for
you anytime we are needed. We
make sure you understand your policy and haven’t overlooked insuring
some of your most important assets.
“We all get busy with everyday life”,
says Thompson, “the key is having
someone locally looking out for your
best interest, and that’s what HBS
does every single day. We know
there are things that you just don’t
think about on a daily basis, so we
strive to make sure you are protected
in every area.”
Business owners… are you struggling with taking care of benefits
questions, payroll, claims issues,
billing problems, etc? Give HBS a
call. We handle your benefits so you
can get back to doing what you do
best… your business!
For our business owners the list of
services we offer is almost endless…
payroll, bonds, business property
and auto, work-comp, drug free Tn.
Certification, employers risk, general liability, and many other avenues. Think your business can’t be
bonded or your line of work is much
to “dangerous” for a fair quote?
Think again! We are contracted with
some of the best, most competitive
carriers in the state and we just happen to be a phone call away.
931-528-7232 or after hours 931510-7648.
We look forward to serving you!

Beauty Queens Boutique
Over the past 30 years Cindy
Strong has been involved with
cosmetics or gowns, starting her
retail career at Merle Norman
Cosmetics and Village Boutique
in Cookeville, TN at the age of
16.
She purchased Merle Norman
Cosmetics 15 years ago and is
currently in her fourth location.
The current shop, owned by
Cynthia and Gary Strong, is
called Beauty Queens Boutique
and has grown into a full-service
boutique that offers cosmetics,
made in the USA by Merle Norman Cosmetics, and gowns by
some of the best designers in the
bridal, prom, and pageant industry. Their mission is to carry the
most beautiful gowns in the
South.
Some of the brands they carry
for bridal include Allure, Maggie Sottero and Essense of Australia. For prom they also carry
Sherri Hill, Sorella Vita Bridesmaids, Jovani, Mori Lee,
Latemme Fashions, Tony Bowls
and Geno's Tuxedos.
You can shop all of your bridal
needs at their one-stop-shop.
Everyone at Beauty Queens
Boutique works together to create a relaxed and enjoyable experience for your friends and
family alike. Local and traveling
brides are able to handpick from
a variety of bridal gowns,
bridesmaids dresses, and tuxedos. Also, local girls are offered
registration on their prom and
pageant gowns so they do not
see their twin at their big events.
Moving the store into a 5,000
square foot building on South
Jefferson Avenue in Cookeville
was a huge leap of faith, and a
far cry from the 500 square foot
space located in the mall where
Cindy started. In October 2014,
Beauty Queens Boutique moved
to an even larger, 7,500 square
foot store at 601 Vicker Place
(Next to Big Lots) in Cookeville
where they are currently located.
Beauty Queens Boutique offers unique opportunities such as
designer days, royal appointments, and royal brides dress
registration. Cindy believes that
the two most important gowns a
girl will wear in her life are her
prom gown and her bridal gown,
and she wants to offer the best
for both life events. Without a
doubt they have succeeded in establishing a family-based boutique that will continue to fulfill
dreams for many years to come.
They are open Monday-Saturday from 10am-6pm and Sunday from 1pm-5pm. You can
reach them at (931) 526-6576 or

Vaughn’s Monument
Works, Inc
Losing a loved one can be
one of the most devastating
experiences a person could go
through in life, but it shouldn’t
be more devastating than it has
to be. Vaughn’s Monument
Works, Inc. makes the burden
much easier to bear by working with families deciding on
memorials for loved ones,
whether it’s a family member
or even a family pet.
“We’ve been in business
going on 70 years now,” says
David Vaughn, one of the
owners of Vaughn’s Monument Works, Inc. “It started in
June 1946 by my dad, Charles
Vaughn…now it’s a fourth
generation family business.”
Charles Vaughn and his
cousin decided to open up
their own business after
Charles came back from the
service in World War II. They
both decided to start this business based on working experience they both had growing up
as teenagers; the cousin decided not to stay but Charles
did.
David Vaughn says a lot has
changed with the business
over the past 70 years. There
are more colors for the stones,
people can buy “at-need” and
“pre-need”, there is a larger
availability of granites (imported and domestic), different
sizes of the stones, and even
the design process of the memorials have changed.
“Each of our memorials are
laid out by hand and some are
customized for families to personalize their memorials,”
says David Vaughn.
Vaughn’s Monument Works,
Inc. website, www.vaughnsmonument.com, shows all the
types of creations they have to
offer. There is also a “click
here to start designing” button
that allows a person to design
their own memorial for their
loved one.
Some services Vaughn’s
Monument Works, Inc. offers
include memorials for families, memorials for pets, civic
memorials, and cemetery
work.
Their Facebook page states
“Vaughn’s Monument Works,
Inc. has been serving the
Cookeville, Tennessee area
since 1946. Products include
monuments, bronze, mausoleums, cemetery service,
date cutting.”
Currently, Vaughn’s Monument’s motto is “We serve
families like our own.” Reviews online back this up.
“The only place I trust when
the time comes!” one Facebook user writes.
“I would like to say if I can
possibly find the right words,
how much I appreciate Eric
and Vaughn’s monuments,”
says another Facebook user.
Vaughn’s Monument Works,
Inc. is located on 567 East
Spring Street, and their store
hours are Monday through
Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The Gun Shop
and Trading Post
Where can a person find a
gun, their favorite movie on
DVD, and sell some old jewelry all at the same place? Is
it even possible to kill all
three birds with one stone
like that? Michael Bartlett
says it’s completely in the
realm of possibilities.
The Gun Shop and Trading
Post in Livingston has been
up and running for three
years now, and it is still
going strong. The owners of
this shop are Anthony Griffith, Michael Bartlett, and
Dennis Bartlett. Some of the
owners decided to start their
own shop after they were
done working at another
pawn shop.
“We just wanted to have
our own shop,” says Michael
Bartlett.
This shop is a class three
gun dealer, and some inventory items include silencers,
guns, and reloading supplies.
According to their Facebook
page, they also have the
area’s largest selection of
firearms, suppressors, reloading supplies, and AR15
Building Supplies, and also
have the area’s largest selection of video games and consoles.
Some brands carried in the
gun shop include Ruger,
Glock, Bushmaster, Smith
and Wesson, and Colt.
The Gun Shop and Trading
Post “buys, sells, trades and
pawns guns, tools, musical
instruments, video games,
jewelry, phones, laptops,
tablets, and much more,” according to their Facebook
page. They also have handgun carry permit classes and
gunsmithing services available.
Reviewers online had some
things to say about the Gun
Shop and Trading Post. One
Google reviewer says “Great
group of guys, Very knowledgeable. The best class 3
firearms dealer in Upper
Cumberland. If they don't
have it, they'll do there best
to help u get it.”
Another online reviewer
says, “These guys are some

Baxter Medical Clinic
Seventeen years ago, the
Baxter
Medical
Clinic
changed management and
was taken over by a group of
local citizens who all had the
dream of keeping the local
doctor's office open. The
clinic had been managed and
operated by Cookeville General Hospital, and even before that the Putnam County
Health Department, but the
hospital had decided to close
the clinic, so this new group
volunteered their time and
effort to keep it open. As
Sue Neal says, after all, Baxter was home town, and we
recognized that the rural
Baxter area needed a medical office that local residents could continue to use.
With the help of surgeon Dr.
Kenna Williams, pharmacist
Vickie Palmer, and many
others, a proposal was made
to create a non-profit medical clinic, and that 501(c)3
application was approved by
the State of Tennessee and
the Federal government.
Back then, the clinic was
started with mostly volunteer staff and local medical
providers, and has now
grown to include three nurse
practitioners and an MD for
family care, a surgeon who
visits every week, and even
mental health counseling.
The friendly feeling of the
clinic continues to this day
as the staff constantly tries
to relate to patients as neighbors and friends, and remember that, as a non-profit,
the clinic exists for the benefit of the community.
The clinic is now open
Monday thru Friday from
8:00 4:00 and has primary
care (family care) available
every day. Most insurances
are accepted, and low-cost
office visits are offered for
patients without insurance.
Dr Williams still visits the
clinic every Wednesday afternoon to perform minor
surgical procedures, and to
do the office consultation for
procedures which require a
surgery center.
The clinic is proud of its as-
sociation with universities
from the local area and beyond. Almost always, you
will find an intern or two
from Tennessee Tech, Vanderbilt, or the University of
Tennessee. Most recently,
the clinic has even added
Georgetown University to its
list of schools who are interested in placing students.
The clinic has been very
lucky that several of the interns have come back after
graduation and signed on as
regular employees, helping
to keep the quality of care
high and up-to-date.
With the influx of new industry and business, the
Baxter Medical Clinic anticipates a rapid development
of the Baxter area, and therefore an increase in the need
for local healthcare. The
clinic is making plans to
continue to grow and provide even more services, and
to continue serving the local
citizens for years to come.
Abel Gardens
When there is a special occasion, birthday, holiday, or even
a wedding, preparation is the
key. And there’s no better way
to be prepared than knowing
where to go for all things
needed at the event. Abel Gardens on South Jefferson Avenue can help with the
preparation of a special occasion that may need flowers,
cards, and gifts.
Abel Gardens started its
business in Cookeville in
1968, and the new owners,
John and Carol Bartlett, have
been running it since Oct.
2000. Since July 2015, Abel
Gardens has expanded to become Hallmark Gold Crown
Store; this is the only Hallmark
Gold Crown store in town.
According to Hallmark’s corporate website, http://corporate.hallmark.com/OurBrand/
Hallmark-Gold-Crown-Stores,
“Hallmark Gold Crown stores
make up one of the nation’s
longest-lived network of specialty retail stores with a focus
on helping consumers connect,
celebrate and commemorate
all of life’s special occasions.
The stores are known for their
breadth of selection and personalized customer service.”
Even after Abel Gardens became a Hallmark Gold Crown
store, it still remains a full-service florist, and continues to
carry a full line of gifts. Some
brands of gifts include Willow
Tree, Endless Jewelry, WoodWick Candles, and BigWood
Boards.
The products and services at
Abel Gardens are for everyone. Abel Gardens designers
have helped brides needing
flowers for their wedding, and
families needing flowers and
gifts for a funeral. The person
tells the designers what they
want, and the designers help
bring it to life.
Abel Gardens also has gifts
for young boys and girls, and
grown men and women.
The customers have a lot to
say about Abel Gardens. One
Google reviewer says, “The
lady who answers the phone is
always so sweet and helpful
and makes great suggestions
according to my budget. They
take my payment over the
phone & deliver as convenient
to my wife's schedule. They
are awesome and very professional.”
A Facebook reviewer says,
“You won't find a more talented, friendly, helpful florist
and gift shop in town!”
Abel Gardens welcomes visitors to their shop,
and their hours are 8 a.m. to
5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on
Saturday.

How shopping locally can
help you and your
community
Today's consumers have
more shopping options at
their disposal than they
did in years past. Though
the Internet may put the
world at one's fingertips,
more and more shoppers
are discovering that buying locally makes for a superior
shopping
experience.
The benefits associated
with shopping locally are
many, and the following
are just a few reasons why
shoppers may want to look
no further than their own
communities when planning their next shopping
excursions.
Keeps money in the local
economy
Locally-owned
businesses often put a larger
share of their revenue
back into their communities. Small business owners may be more inclined
to employ local residents,
giving more people in the
community solid employment. Business owners
may reach out and support
other neighborhood efforts, such as fundraising
initiatives for charities
and schools. By shopping
at local stores, you have a
hand in supporting these
efforts as well.
Save money
When factoring in travel
time and the cost of fuel,
shopping locally makes
more sense than driving to
a faraway mall. In addition, repeat customers who
establish a rapport with a
local business owner may
find that such owners are
more inclined to price
match or work with loyal
customers to find lower
prices through suppliers.
Diversify your home and
lifestyle
Shoppers who prefer
more unique styles may
find local businesses cater
to their needs better than
large chain stores. Larger
retailers offer the same
products to customers regardless of where those
customers live, so a person
in California may be decorating his or her home
with the same furnishings
as a person in North Carolina. But local shops tend
to produce more unique
items that are not available nationwide.
Promote entrepreneurship
Small businesses are an
essential element to the
country's
economic
growth. By shopping locally, consumers are showing their support for this
important segment of the
national economy.
Help establish local pride
Independent shops con-
tribute to the fabric of a
community
and
what
makes it special and
unique. Tourists and other
visitors will be much more
inclined to remember a
local shop rather than a
big chain in a particular
neighborhood. When travelers want to get a feel for
a community, they seek
out small, local stores that
are much more likely to
stock a high percentage of
locally-sourced goods.
Attract other businesses
Private and public sector
businesses tend to gravitate around anchor stores.
Should a local store be
successful, banks, restaurants, salons, and other
businesses may move in as
well.
Shopping locally benefits
consumers in various
ways, many of which contribute to a healthy local
economy

Add a Touch of Elegance to Your Special Event
Communities can celebrate
local businesses
Owning a business is the
goal of many would-be entrepreneurs. Being your own
boss has certain perks, including making your own
hours and not having to report to anyone but yourself.
But owning a business is a
lot of work, especially for
new business owners trying
to get their businesses off the
ground.
According
to
Bloomberg, eight out of 10
entrepreneurs who start businesses fail within 18 months
of opening their doors. The
Small Business Association
indicates the numbers are not
so dire, saying 30 percent of
new businesses fail in the
first two years of operation;
50 percent during the first
five years; and 66 percent
during the first 10.
Local businesses face an uphill battle to survive, but
there are many things residents can do to support these
valuable additions to their
communities.
Shop locally. Shopping locally not only supports local
businesses, but it also contributes to the local economy.
Shopping
locally
keeps
money in the community,
which can benefit everyone.
Shopping locally produces a
trickle-down effect, as local
businesses that are thriving
may patronize other local
businesses, and so on. This,
in turn, helps grow other
businesses in the community,
making it a nicer place to live
and work.
Spread the word. Word-ofmouth advertising is effec-

tive. A respected member of
the community who shares a
good experience with a local
business may propel others to
patronize the business. Speak
up when you feel a business
owner has provided an exceptional level of service. Recommend a company to
friends and neighbors. You
also may want to review a
business via online rating
websites such as Yelp or
Angie's List.
Attend grand openings.
Each community is unique,
and often the vibe of a community is defined by the businesses
that
call
that
community home. Attend
grand openings to show you
are invested in the quality
and vitality of your community. When others see a business doing well, they may be
more inclined to shop there as
well.
Apply for work. Another
way to support a local business is to work for one. Small
local businesses employ millions of people across the
country, and many foster
great working environments.
In addition, small businesses
are known for their customer
service, and employees often
become experts in their products and services because of
the hands-on experience they
gain while working for small
businesses.
Supporting and celebrating
local businesses can instill a
sense of community pride and
benefit the local economy in
a myriad of ways.

T’s Yarn Barn
Teaching yourself to knit
or crochet is not the easiest
thing in the world, but sometimes having a teacher to
help can be a great start.
Teresa Ret, owner of T’s
Yarn Barn, can offer a great
start.
Ret’s passion for yarn, knitting and crocheting began
when her son was two years
old.
“He wanted me to watch
TV with him and I got tired
of watching the same TV
shows over and over. So I
learned how to knit, and that
kept me entertained while I
sat there and watched TV
with my son,” says Ret.
Ret decided to open up her
own yarn store when the
yarn store she shopped at
closed down.
“We had a yarn store
owned by some friends of
mine, and they decided to retire. I just hated that we didn’t have a local yarn store in
this area, so I decided to
open a small business and
just be able to offer a little
something that they had,”
says Ret.
T’s Yarn barn has a selection of supplies to choose
from. They have Cascade,
Plymouth, and Universal
yarns. Chiaogoo knitting
needles, crochet hooks, and
accessories. They also offer
one-on-one lessons to help a
beginner get started, and
they have classes on Saturdays, and on Fridays they
group together to share ideas
on their projects.
“The owner Teresa was
super nice and the service
was excellent,” says a reviewer on Yellow Pages.
T’s Yarn Barn is located on
England Drive, next door to
the fire station off highway
111. The shop is open Tuesday and Wednesday 11 a.m.
to 5 p.m., Thursday 12 p.m.
to 8 p.m., Friday 11 a.m. to
5 p.m., and Saturday 11 a.m.
to 3 p.m.

NAPA Auto Parts
For over 69 years, NAPA Auto
Parts has been an asset to
Cookeville and Putnam County.
Today, the current owners of
NAPA Auto Parts are Steve and
Kay Phillips, who purchased
the store in 2006.
D.T. Fulton and Gene Johns
started the NAPA Store, Putnam
County Auto Parts in 1947, in
the building of the former
Squirrely Shirley’s on N. Cedar,
right across the street from
Ralph’s Donuts. Gene worked
for D.T. managing a string of
NAPA stores all across the
Upper Cumberland. Gene’s son
and daughter-in-law, Steve and
Mary Johns, own Johns Family
and Implant Dentistry in
Cookeville.
Steve and Kay bought the
store from Corporate NAPA
Auto Parts in 2006, at its present location at 606 S. Willow
Avenue. They deliver to wholesale customers all across Putnam County and serve a
thriving population of Do-It-
Yourselfers from that store.
In the last 10 years, the store

awarded the Knoxville DC’s
Store of the Year 5 times, and
won the prestigious Atlantic Division Store of the Year in

creation of Heart of the City
Playground in downtown
Cookeville.

Unique ways to
shop locally
Shopping locally is a great
way to benefit your community and, in many instances,
your bottom line. When consumers shop locally, they
help stimulate their local
economies, creating jobs for
their neighbors by helping
local businesses grow and
thrive. Shopping locally also
saves shoppers long trips to
the mall that can waste expensive fuel, especially if
consumers don't find what
they're looking for.
Shopping locally is especially important when the
economy is struggling, as
smaller businesses are not always as capable of bearing
the brunt of a recession as
larger ones. The following
are a handful of unique ways
men and women can shop locally.
* Forgo a traditional vacation. If you're used to taking
an annual trip to a Caribbean
island or another faraway locale, forgo that trip this year
and take a more local vacation instead. A local vacation
can be similar to a staycation,
when you simply stay home,
but spend some nights out on
the town in your local community. Go out to eat, take in
a concert or theater performance at a nearby theater or
take the kids out for miniature golf.
For those who feel the need
to get away from home, consider a local bed and breakfast or another relaxing locale
that's close to home. You will
still get the feel of a traditional vacation, but you won't
spend as much and you'll be
doing your part to help the
local economy.
* Visit a local amusement
park. An amusement park is a
fun way to spend an afternoon, but such parks are also
beneficial for a local economy, creating jobs and attracting
out-of-towners
looking for a wholesome
good time. When thinking
about ways to shop locally,
consider a trip to your local
amusement park. You're not
likely to find a more fun way
to help your community.
* Hit the links. A round of
golf is another great way to
stimulate your local economy. Municipally owned golf
courses are owned by the municipality, which means each
dollar you spend is money
that's going back into your
community. And much like
other local businesses, the
golf course is no doubt employing your friends and
neighbors, giving even more
money back to your community.
* Treat yourself to a spa
treatment. Another unique
and indulgent way to support
your local economy is to treat
yourself to a spa treatment.
The cost of a spa trip depends
on what you prefer, but even
a relatively inexpensive trip
to the spa will support a local
business. Plus, you'll reap the
rewards of that support immediately.
Shopping locally is more
than just dining out or buying

foods.
Those who want to embrace
shopping locally can do so in
a variety of ways.
The many
benefits of buying
locally
Buying locally is a great
way for consumers to find
the products and services
they're looking for and help
their local economy along
the way. The small businesses in your community
may be owned by your next
door neighbor, who relies on
his or her fellow townspeople to keep the business
going strong.
Buying locally is not only
beneficial for local business
owners, but buying locally
benefits consumers and
members of the community
in a number of ways.
* Buying locally creates
jobs. The number of unemployed men and women has
gradually declined in recent
years, but those figures are
still high in many communities. Buying locally creates
jobs in your community, potentially creating a job for
you or a friend or family
member.
* Buying locally helps the
environment. Buying within
your community reduces the
amount of fuel you're likely
to use for a weekend shopping trip while also reducing pollution. In addition,
many local store owners use
local materials and ingredients, reducing the amount of
fuel consumed to get products into the store.
* Buying locally creates a
more closely knit community. Juggling a career and a
family can make it hard for
men and women to get to
know their neighbors and
other members of their community. Buying locally is an
opportunity to strengthen
that bond with your neighbors, creating a close knit
community in which residents may feel safer and
more comfortable.
* Buying locally is more
convenient. Convenience is
paramount to many consumers, and buying locally
saves both time and money.
Driving to a faraway mall or
shopping center or paying
costly online shipping fees
is not nearly as quick or
convenient as shopping
within your community,
where you can purchase and
take home items on the same
day without using a full tank
of gas or paying for shipping.
* Buying locally benefits
your local economy. In
2004, the consultancy Civic
Economics was commissioned by Chicago's Andersonville
Chamber
of
Commerce to examine the
economic impact of 10 local
businesses against that of
chain businesses. The study
found that of every $100
spent at local businesses,
$68 remained in the local
economy, while only $43 of
every $100 spent at chain
stores remained in the local
economy. That's a significant boost to your local
economy, and all it requires
is shopping at local retailers.
* Buying locally can increase your property value.
Homeowners might be able
to increase the value of their
homes by buying locally. A
joint study from Independent We Stand and Civic Economics found that cities
with a strong centralized
small business district had a
54 percent greater increase
in property values than communities that did not have
such a district. A more thriving local community, including a thriving shopping
district, is no doubt attractive to prospective home
buyers.
The reasons for shopping
locally are many. In addition
to helping local business
owners, consumers who
shop locally are also helping
themselves
Outdoor Junction
For a person who loves to
hunt, fish, shoot, or wants a
hand gun permit, there’s a
place in town that can take
care of all those needs. The
Outdoor Junction offers a variety of products and services
to anyone who is geared toward outdoor activities or has
an interest in shooting guns.
Steve and Carolyn Carter
are the owners of the Outdoor
Junction, and they have had
this business up and running
for 10 years. Steve says he
grew up all of his life with
these outdoor activities being
a big part of his life, and that
is part of what made him
want to open this business.
“I felt a need for a sporting
goods shop in this area,” says
Steve Carter when asked why
he decided to open up his
shop in Cookeville.
The Outdoor Junction has
products relating to anything
hunting, fishing, shooting.
They have an indoor range
and offer hand gun permit
classes. Located on their
Facebook page is an application for their hand gun permit
classes.
“We are what you would call
a full line sporting goods
store. We do anything associated with hunting, fishing, or
shooting,” says Steve Carter.
“Anything associated with
hunting, whether its reloading or how to set up the gun,
we can help—same thing
with fishing. We also do the
permit carry classes.”
Reviews found online had
some good things to say
about the Outdoor Junction.
“Super group of guys. Great
selection for whatever you
are looking for in shooting.
Also, the indoor shooting
range is top notch,” says on
Google reviewer.
“Excellent spot for the
novice or the experienced
gun/bow enthusiast. As a female with little previous experience, my wife was elated
to find such a helpful and
knowledgeable
staff.
Whether it was in the gun
room (looking for the right
firearm), or at the indoor
range (looking for instruction), she was very pleased at
the friendliness and interest
shown by the whole staff,”
says another Google reviewer.
The Outdoor Junction is located on East Spring Street,
and is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Monday through Friday, and
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

The Market on the Square
There aren’t many locally
owned businesses a person can
go to looking for home décor
items, a pair of new Toms, and
gadgets for the kitchen all at the
same stop. Cookeville is fortunate enough to have a place like
this, and it’s called the Market on
the Square.
The Market has been open for
17 years now under different
owners. Marlene Massa has been
the owner for the last ten years.
In those ten years The Market has
evolved greatly.
“When I was younger, I worked
for a retail corporation, and I always loved what I did,” says
Massa. “And when the opportunity came around for me to purchase the Market on the Square,
it was something that I knew I re-
ally wanted, so that’s how it
came about.”
The Market’s motto is “Think
outside the box and inside the
square”, and the wide range of
products they carry reflects this
motto.
“We span from gourmet foods
to baby products, home décor,
fashion, Tom’s shoes and accessories,” says Massa.
The kitchen area has a wide
range of products as well.
“I’m quite proud that plenty of
people don’t have to go to
Nashville to go to a kitchen store.
Our kitchen store is quite progressive and up-to-date,” says
Massa.
People online seem to enjoy
talking about their experiences
they have with the Market on the
Square.
“Love this place! They have the
best gifts for family and friends!
The customer service is the best
around. If you have not shopped
here before, you are missing out
and need to stop by and check it
out.” says one Facebook reviewer.
“I love supporting local businesses and The Market on the
Square makes that an easy task
with the unique items they stock
in their store. I am very glad we
have such a wonderful local business in Cookeville to better our
community!” says another Facebook reviewer.
The Market is located on Jefferson Avenue, and is open Monday
through Saturday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Group PC is here to help
those with tax, accounting

needs.

that is done by the team at

goal of helping their clients

“Our firm provides outstanding service to our clients because of our dedication to

Freddy Duncan and Sons
Moving and Storage
For a person who is moving
to a new home for the first time,
packing and moving can be
stressful, to say the least. First,
everything has to be packed up
in boxes. What gets packed
with what, and what’s the
process of renting some sort of
U-Haul? These are typical
questions from the first-time
and the seasoned mover, and
luckily Freddy Duncan has the
answers.
Duncan is the current owner
of Freddy Duncan and Sons
Moving and Storage here in
Cookeville. He got his start in
the moving business while he
was a youngster; his parents
worked for Mayflower Transit,
where he learned a lot from his
experiences back then. Duncan
says he has been involved in the
moving business itself since
1977.
“But in1981, we (Duncan and
his wife) decided to move here
to Cookeville to start up our
own business, and we’ve been
here ever since,” says Duncan.
Freddy Duncan and Sons
Moving and Storage offers a
variety of services for customers. They have U-Haul
trucks and vans to rent, sell
moving boxes and tape, rent out
climate-controlled
storage
units, and even teach customers
how to properly pack boxes.
They also do local and long distance moving as an agent for
North American Van Lines.
“We help our customers by
telling them what size truck
they need, or what size storage
unit would accommodate their
needs.” Says Duncan. “And
when people come in to buy
boxes we ask them what they’re
going to be packing, so we can
give them the proper size boxes
if they are going to pack themselves.”
The motto of Freddy Duncan
and Sons Moving and Storage
is simply “For a move packed
with safety.” According to their
website, they have won a Torch
award in 2006 and have grade
A rating with the Better Business Bureau, so their motto
stands strong.
Freddy Duncan and Sons
Moving and Storage is also
sponsoring the Dream Sweep
Yard Sale to benefit Habitat for
Humanity on May 7 at the Putnam County Fairgrounds. This
is a huge event with an estimated turn out of up to 10,000
people. Everyone is invited to
come out and see what there is
to offer.
Freddy Duncan and Sons
Moving and Storage is located
on 809 East 20 St. Cookeville,
Tenn. Their hours are 8 a.m. to
5 p.m. Monday through Friday,
and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.
