Tim Shue`s 1939 Chevy - Street Survivors of Maryland
THE EXAMINER T H U R S DAY, D E C E M B E R 4 , 2 0 0 8 | BA 29 ’39 Chevy defies its age with every drive STATS BOX By Trey Palmisano Examiner Correspondent When it comes to buying your dream car, Tim Shue will attest that getting intimately acquainted with the car is not only in your best interest, it might save you unnecessary headaches down the road. Shue, an engineering manager from Pasadena, was in the right place at the right time — Webmaster for Street Survivors car club — when he found the owner of a 1939 Chevrolet Master Deluxe street rod coupe. “I saw it [the Deluxe] back at a car show in 2004 and then I saw it around at a couple local car shows in Glen Burnie and Pasadena. One day I was talking to the owner telling him how much I liked it and how it was a nice car. And he said it was for sale. So that got my wheels turning on how to buy it,” said Shue. After a few rotations, he eventually bought the car in 2007. The multi-colored flame-painted Deluxe took about four years to restore and is powered by the legendary Chevy 350 cubic inch small block engine, which Hasselberger gave a little extra push. By having the cylinders » Engine: 350 CID LP185/HP370 » Performance: 2.73:1 locking rear differentials » Wheels: Billet Specialties GT Hex Series » Tires: Winston Winner GT » Interior: Cyberdyne digital instruments, A/C, Billet Specialties knobs, handles, and cranks, electric windows, JVC stereo, Sony speakers bored .30 over, the Deluxe makes an impressive 370 hp. Resting on a Mustang II suspension, a favorite set up among hot rodders, Shue said the car drives better than most modern cars he’s ever driven. To ensure a modicum of creature comfort, the Deluxe was retrofitted with A/C that blows through the original heater vents, running directly through the firewall along with the condenser and coil. The tilt steering comes from a mid-’70s Camaro. With the exception of chrome corrugated heater hoses, Shue has changed very little since he purchased it. However, owning the car Tim Shue bought this flame-painted hot rod in 2007. This 1939 Chevy Master Deluxe’s small block has been massaged to produce a whopping 370 hp. was one thing. Getting to know it was a different story. “The first car show I attempted to take it to after the sale was final, I started backing out of the driveway and all of the sudden it started overheating and spewing water all over the engine after we spent a couple hours cleaning it,” said Shue. Thinking an easy fix was nowhere in sight, Shue tapped friends and made a few phone calls, eventually connecting with Hasselberger. Shue had no idea that the electric fan was not engaging. And in his excitement to buy the car, important “hidden switches” did not find their way into the conversation. A manually activated switch located on the radiator overflow tank, which on new cars figures automatically into the ECU, needed to be flipped for the electric fan to cool the engine properly. Despite small problems, the car defies its age every time he turns the key. Shue said he hopes to add some airbrushed artwork to the rear panel, even while he splits his TREY PALMISANO/EXAMINER PHOTOS What do you drive? A ’39 Chevy Master Deluxe. What is your most memorable driving experience? It was September 2007. My wife Bonnie and I joined with several Street Survivor club members and convoyed to the Pippinfest in Fairfield, PA. Along the way, we stopped at “The Holy Doughnut” in Burtonsville, then up through the Ski Liberty area. We then attended the festival and afterwards cruised all around in Gettysburg National Park. It was well over a 250-mile round trip that took all day and was a lot of fun. Why do you drive it? It’s just an awesome car. It’s almost 70 years old and it drives sometimes like a new car with the new suspension and all the modern conveniences of air conditioning, tilt steering, cruise control. I’ve had other cars and the ride just doesn’t compare with some of the older cars that haven’t been modified. What was your first vehicle? A 1971 Monte Carlo. It was the first car I had as a teenager. It was a muscle car back in the day. It had a 350 with a 400 turbo transmission. Ever since I started driving, I liked cars. My dream car was always a Corvette. I did own a 1964 convertible Corvette. What makes this car so special? All the modifications on it. The paint job. It’s a head turner wherever I go. I draw crowds to look at the car. It’s always a compliment. Everybody I run into loves something about the car. What’s currently in your CD player? Classic rock. I have everything from Eric Clapton to Black Sabbath. CHECK OUT MY RIDE time between the Deluxe and his 1966 Mustang coupe, both of which he co-owns with wife Bonnie. And your first ticket? What was it for? Speeding in my uncle’s ’77 T-bird.
