SUB FOCUS INTERVIEW
G: Sub Focus, you’ve supported Example for
Ibiza and Mallorca Rocks this week, Chase &
Status were our headliners last week, you’ve
worked closely with both acts...
SF: Yeah, I’ve had affiliations with both acts,
I produced ‘Kickstarts’ for Example and I’ve
toured with Chase & Status for years; we’ve
all been friends for a while. I’ve been coming
to Ibiza for a long time so it’s really nice to
be performing here a lot now. It feels like
dubstep and drum and bass are really taking
here, finally!
G: Do you always bring the ring of fire? Or
what did you call it before?
SF: The mega donut. Ha! No, it’s what I use
for my live sets, what I’m doing this week. I
don’t use it for when I DJ. A lot of my peers
decided for the live shows to bring in a band
but I wanted to go more futuristic and approach in an electronic way. I’ve had these
devices which are motion sensors built in so
I can control everything, changing the drum
beats, the lights (ring of fire), playing bits of
keyboard, play with the baselines... It’s kind
of like remixing live; it’s really fun and exciting
to control every aspect on stage.
G: Wow, you’re a one man circus! So when
you come to Ibiza not to perform, what do
you like to do?
SF: I come to Ibiza to relax quite a lot; I try to
come here most summers. Benirras in the
north is my favourite beach to go to. I usually
try and get away from it all a little bit and then
go to the odd club night. I’ve been going to
DC10 and Cocoon at Amnesia for years, and
nights at Ibiza Rocks for a long time. I get
very inspired when I come here. If you go on holiday to somewhere in the Med usually it’s always really
beautiful but then the nightlife’s terrible. Whereas here you’ve got brilliant nightlife and it’s beautiful, so
you get the best of both worlds.

There are two words on everyone’s lips this week – RADIO SOULWAX. For those of you who didn’t manage
to catch last Wednesday’s Ibiza Rocks the Radio show, we made a rather special announcement. And here it
is again. Deep breath. 2 Many DJ’s will be joining the team LIVE ONAIR on Ibiza Global Radio for a very special
Ibiza Rocks the Radio/Radio Soulwax takeover next Wednesday. Excited does not even come remotely close
to how we feel about our special guests! David and Stephan Dewaele have performed every year for Ibiza
Rocks, usually as part of their super band Soulwax. This year they have something momentous planned - 2
Many DJs, Under the Covers. We won’t give too much away now, you need to get your ass to the concert
and tune in to next Wednesday’s radio show. But alongside the handsome gents exceptionally killer set,
expect timely accompanied visuals in many way shapes and forms. And, well... magic! Supporting our favourite brotherly combo are hotly tipped Azari & III who also performed recently at the Radio 1 in Ibiza event.
This week we’re all about the radio...
As for last Wednesday, we were ever so proud to see Example headline his own Ibiza Rocks sell-out concert.
After playing support for the past two years and hosting many of our official aftershows, his time to shine
had arrived and he most certainly didn’t disappoint. Hats off to Sub Focus for providing a (literally) dazzling
support and to DJ Doorly and Nicola Bear for keeping everyone entertained in-between acts with
their fantastic tunes.

IBIZA ROCKS BAR
THIS WEEK
Ibiza Rocks DJ and bar blogger Adam Daniels fills you in
with the latest from the seafront…
Now then! As the days and nights get hotter and hotter,
so do the parties down at the Ibiza Rocks Bar. Every evening the air is filled with amazing music, the bar is packed
to the rafters with cool crowds of people, and DJ’s and live
acts galore keep heading down to play some tunes before
being whisked off to one of the superclubs on the island.
Fresh off the plane from Miami, Wizard Sleeve dropped
by the bar during their first ever visit to Ibiza last Saturday
to perform a live PA of Sidney Samson’s ‘Riverside’. They
managed to get every person in the bar to cram onto the
dance floor as they dished out shots of vodka to the entire
crowd. Needless to say, it went down pretty well! Chase
and Status, Sub Focus and Example also popped in last
week during their stay in Ibiza and were caught mixing
it up with the crowds and being grabbed for photo after
photo by those lucky enough to get within earshot.
Come Together boot off the proceedings this week,
hosting the pre-party for their soiree at Space later in the
evening. Free buses run from the bar to the club every hour. Hed Kandi then take over on Saturday, bringing their glamorous show to the bar with a pumping house soundtrack before heading over to Es Paradis. Judge Jules and his Judgement
Sundays crew descend on Sunday night with stilt walkers, fire-eaters and live percussionists to prepare you for their event
at Eden. The Underground Rebel Bingo Club bring their show to the bar on Monday - their all-conquering crazy take on
your grannies favourite past time is one of the most fun things you’ll get the chance to do whilst in the Balearics. Get your
pens at the ready for the chance to win prizes like tickets to the 2manyDJ’s hotel gig and one hundred shiny euros! ‘Tonight’
continue to smash it at Amnesia every week and they carry on with their pre-party at the Ibiza Rocks Bar on Tuesday. Joining
us for a very special DJ set will be none other than ANNIE MAC – Radio One’s first lady of dance music. Not to be missed!
Wednesday is Ibiza Rocks Hotel gig day; be sure to pop into the bar after the gig for a couple of drinks before heading to the
official aftershow at Es Paradis. Ibiza Rocks superstar resident DJ Doorly will be there to make sure you keep dancing, showing off his technical wizardry on the decks. Finally, UK clubbing giants Cream finish off the week on Thursday, where EDDIE
HALLIWELL will be on hand to play an hour-long live show at the bar for FREE! Grab a drink and you’ll get a ticket for the bus
to the club.
Your Ibiza Rocks Bar residents will be on hand to fill in the musical gaps between superstar DJ’s. Expect an eclectic selection
of dubstep, disco, indie, rock, pop, house, techno, electro and anything else that tickles their earbuds. Catch you down there.

G: Fresh off stage, after two years of support slots,
finally headlining, Example, how does it feel!?
E: It’s great! Someone just told me we outsold
Dizzee Rascal, that’s what I’m most happy about.
I respect Dizzee a lot, he’s a mate of mine... even
though he did try and beat me up once.
G: You got the crowd jumping like crazy, and you
certainly know how to bounce.
E: Yeah, Professor Green’s here tonight and he said
you can tell I’ve been doing a lot of skipping.
G: Talk us through your last 24 hours.
E: Mallorca Rocks was really good, it’s quite weird
because the crowd at Mallorca Rocks are a bit
younger, more Northern, so they’d understand you!
A bit, everyman. And you come here and they’re
a bit older, there are a lot of people in the crowd
that think, yeah I’m really cool, and you have to win
them over. Mallorca Rocks first song – lunatics!

the end they’re going mental cheering ‘this man’s
amazing, I’m gonna go see him on his UK tour!’
G: Ah supporting Fenech Soler in Autumn.
E: Good knowledge, let’s go back to me though.
G: Ok! How was your boat trip this afternoon? (Elliot arrived to surprise everyone on Ibiza Rocks the
Boat)
E: It took us about an hour to find the boat! I was
lost in the Med on this like, lilo with an engine; everyone seems pleased when I showed up.
G: Your latest single ‘Stay Awake’ was inspired by
your stay at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel last year?
E: Yeah. I woke up at about 10am, looked over my
balcony and was like, look at all these nutters still
awake!
G: How come in all your music video’s your love
interests are always brunettes?
E: I went out with a couple of blonde birds and they
were all lunatics so I’ve switched to the darker side
now.
G: I heard your name came from the school playground, but then on your Wikipedia it says it’s after
your initials E.G (Elliot Gleave).
E: You’re right on both counts; it was from some kid
in the playground because of my initials. Anything
else you wanna ask me?
G: What did you have for breakfast this morning?
E: A banana.
G: Me too!
E: High five.
