3 - Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas
Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas Lighting the Way Winter 2011 Plains Community Building It started as a vision. Over ten years ago a handful of people in Plains, Kansas had a dream. They wanted a building that would host various different events in their community. A fund was started at the Community Foundation in July of 2000 to provide donors to the project a way making their gifts tax deductible. The building contains a completely modern kitchen with meeting rooms that can be re-configured to accommodate almost any organization, group or family’s needs. The new community building is designed to handle simultaneous events and will serve the Plains community for generations to come. This project was a public and private venture. Private funds and grants account for 90% of the project, relying on taxpayers for only 10% of the funding. The result is a wonderful asset for the entire community to enjoy and speaks to the quality of life in Southwest Kansas which is an essential ingredient in economic development. In no time at all, the people McWhirt Family Scholarship Established As a longtime resident and retired school administrator Don McWhirt felt compelled to give back to his community. Don has spent a lifetime giving to his community. He served as a school administrator and on various volunteer community boards, as well as the Jetmore City Council. Given his background and passion for education, it is not surprising that his gift would come as a scholarship. When this scholarship endows it will provide a $1,000 scholarship for a deserving student from Hodgeman County. Endowed scholarships are designed to last forever and the McWhirt Family Scholarship will be instrumental in touching many lives in the years to come of Plains will be wondering what they did before their community building became reality. The Community Foundation is honored to have been part of this project and looking forward to being part of the next “vision to reality” project that benefits Plains, Kansas. Leidigh Family Fund Endows The Leidigh Family Fund was established to memorialize the life of Helen Leidigh and honor the entire Leidigh family and their contributions to the community of Spearville, Kansas, throughout the years. The Leidigh family has been involved in local banking since 1908. They were involved in founding the First National Bank of Spearville. One that stands out in great encouragement, the Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas continually has new and greater means by which we provide or participate in numerous projects and events, all of which enrich the lives of people whose lives we touch. Throughout this newsletter you have a general scope of the events and programs that involved the Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas during the past six months. Establishing new Fund Accounts continues to broaden our basis for reaching out to the needs of others; youth enrichment was in the foreground with Phase Two of Rachel’s Challenge where over 4,200 students from surrounding eight communities participated. The Grant Program was able to award grants to organizations who are most in need of financial assistance. Surrounding communities have taken tremendous leadership in developing ways and means by which they make a significant difference in their community. The Foundation is working closely with these communities to provide various assistance. Many of you already recognize various ways you can directly or indirectly participate in the outstanding contribution you can make by sharing your time, talent and treasure. Support from the great people of Southwest Kansas may come from personal incidental gifts to serious estate and tax planning. The Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas stands ready to assist in whatever manner serves you best. As the Foundation outlines the on-going plan into the future, you are the most important part of those plans. To work together and see the result of those efforts is beyond measure as we together “Light the Way for Future Generations,” and for that we are forever grateful to all of you. —Margaret Hamilton, Chairperson of the Board of Directors Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas l The mission of the Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas is to improve the quality of life in the Southwest Kansas area by providing ongoing philanthropic leadership and maintaining and enhancing the educational, social, cultural, health and civic resources of the community. —Mission Statement Lighting the Way Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas Founders photo by Dale Hingle Hodgeman Community Foundation Affiliates and Meets the Challenge Putting their money where their mouth is, board members, donors and supporters of the Hodgeman Community Foundation have met the matching challenge. The Board of Directors of the Hodgeman Community Foundation voted in April of this year to start an unrestricted endowed fund for the benefit of Hodgeman County. After the expressing an interest in placing their fund with the Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas, the Board of Directors of this Community Foundation voted to be first funders of this endowment and granted the first $1,000.00 to the fund. Hoping to provide incentive and motivation, Board of Directors of Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas challenged the Hodgeman group to raise an additional $2,000 before the end of December of this year to receive an additional $1,000 grant. The Hodgeman Community Foundation not only met this challenge they exceeded it. With a now fully funded endowment the Hodgeman group will be looking forward to making grants in Hodgeman County in the near future and for many years to come. As this fund continues to grow so will the size of the grants made to the benefit of Hanston, Jetmore and all of Hodgeman County. Congratulations to the Hodgeman Community Foundation our newest community affiliate. TORCH FUND Mike & Mindy Burkhart (Call 620-225-0959 for more information on becoming a member of The Torch Fund.) Goddard, IV Duane & Mary Jo Tasset Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas Rachel’s Challenge The Community Foundation sponsored a return engagement of the Rachel’s Challenge program last September. Rachel’s Challenge targets anti-violence and bullying in schools. This is the premier program of its kind in the nation and the second time it has been presented to schools in Southwest Kansas. The original Rachel’s Challenge program was presented to six area schools representing approximately 1,500 students. The enhanced program, Rachel’s Legacy, was attended by more than 2,600 students from three different schools. A special thanks to our partners in sponsoring this program: Fidelity State Bank and Trust, The City of Dodge City, Dodge City Public Schools-USD 443 and Sunflower Bank. School violence still rates among the top three causes of student deaths in America today. The Community Foundation and our sponsoring partners remain committed to being part of the solution in solving this national problem. Foundation Office Relocated We’ve moved again. For the second time in 19 years the Foundation’s office has moved. Our new location is 208 West Wyatt Earp Blvd. The entrance to our building is through the south entrance of Fidelity State Bank and then take the elevator to the second floor. Our previous landlords, Mike and Mindy Burkhart, provided the office space at our former location and it was exactly what was needed at the time. The Board of Directors of the Community Foundation will always be grateful to the Burkhart’s for the helping hand. The new office should serve the Community Foundation’s needs for many years to come. The Board of Directors and staff of the Community Foundation sincerely appreciate Ben Zimmerman, III for his help in acquiring this new office space. Lighting the Way Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas Grants: The primary goal of the Community Foundation is to make this part of Southwest Kansas a better place to live and raise children. This goal is accomplished through the management and distribution of endowed funds. Earnings from the endowed funds are given back to the communities we serve in the form of scholarships and grants. The Community Foundation was established to help donors realize their philanthropic dreams and goals. Every grant and scholarship awarded by the Community Foundation is a direct result of a donor with a vision and a desire to give something back to the communities of Southwest Kansas. Open competitive grants at the Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas are awarded in the third quarter of every year. This year grants were awarded to agencies and organizations in Ford, Gray, Hodgeman, and Meade Counties.
