GUIDE

Ottawa’s premier
shopping destination
located one block east
of Parliament Hill.
DISCOVER
Ottawa
W
elcome to Ottawa, where
urban delights intertwine
with capital decadence.
Landmarks, such as Parliament
Hill just steps away from the Ottawa River, and
the Rideau Canal — a UNESCO World Heritage
Site, which flows through the heart of the city
— are permanent highlights for their history,
importance, and beauty. And they serve as great
starting points before exploring the surrounding
neighbourhoods that tie Ottawa together.
These diverse areas, from the iconic ByWard
Market district to the burgeoning enclave of
Westboro just minutes from downtown, are
shining examples of Ottawa’s rapidly growing
shopping scene that features a score of boutiques,
unique clothing experiences, and major expansions of shopping centres. And, of course, all have
their own unique feel when it comes to dining
out — from high-end restaurants to pubs to
quaint coffee shops.
There are plenty of family-friendly outings throughout the nation’s capital. Ottawa’s
world-class museums — from the Canadian War
Museum to the Canadian Museum of Nature and
the newly renamed Canadian Museum of History
— and the National Gallery of Canada all boast
exhibits and events that will entice all ages. Get
out into the sun at Calypso Theme Waterpark,
and enjoy the beautiful colours throughout
Ottawa during the Canadian Tulip Festival.
And there is plenty to enjoy when the sun
sets. Casino du Lac-Leamy, just minutes from
downtown Ottawa, has undergone an incredible
transformation to bring even more excitement to
your night out, and hotspots such as the National
Arts Centre are packed with incredible music,
theatre, and arts options.
Walk, run, bike, or blade your way through
Ottawa and see just how extraordinary Canada’s
capital is for yourself.

Ottawa’s diverse neighbourhoods have undergone a tremendous
transformation in recent years, noticeably marked by its changing
storefronts. To say the nation’s capital has undergone a shopping
renaissance is quite an understatement. Numerous boutiques featuring
Canadian designers have opened their doors in recent years, and
shopping hubs such as the Rideau Centre are evolving by way of
major renovations. Enjoy these shops as you wander through Ottawa.

BY WARD
MARKET
16
The ByWard Market district sits just east of Parliament Hill.
Unlike its powerful neighbour that governs the land, the
Market is marked by the everyman — vendors selling fresh
produce, bakers producing tasty treats, designers treating us
with their collections. And it’s what makes this area of Ottawa
so extraordinary.

urban beauty makes Ottawa a perfect place for
outdoor adventure right in the heart of the city.

Much of Ottawa’s natural beauty
lies in its close proximity to water. The Ottawa River and the
Rideau River create a natural
border, with parks, beaches, and
natural green spaces throughout,
which can be accessed by the
city’s extensive, paved pathways

The charm of Ottawa’s two

the city’s popular golf courses
are located at Brookstreet

The Marshes features tranquil
streams and lakes in this

The MarchWood is a smaller

DID YOU KNOW...
That, aside from Montréal, Ottawa has
the highest number of bilingual residents
in Canada? Because of our location on
the Ontario / Québec border, you’ll hear
both English and French in our streets.
On top of that, over a quarter of Ottawa’s
population speaks a language other
than French or English. Talk about a
multicultural city!

Beer Alley Along
Sparks Street
Sparks Street, Ottawa’s bustling
outdoor pedestrian mall, is
hopping with great spots to grab
a drink in between shopping excursions and afternoons spent
exploring the capital.
Longtime favourite D’Arcy
McGee’s (44 Sparks St.) couples Irish fare with a drink menu
overflowing with options. On
top of a varied array of beer on
draught and in bottles — including selections from a number of
local breweries — they boast a
long list of whiskies for any taste
and occasion.
Relative newcomer to Ottawa,
but longtime brewpub operation,
The 3 Brewers (240 Sparks
St., also known as Les 3 Brasseurs) brew their beer on premises to perfectly pair with their
European-inspired dishes. They
have five regulars on top, plus a
monthly beer that changes with
the season.
Bier Markt (156 Sparks St.,
opening spring 2014) is the latest to enter Sparks Street. The
upscale pub features 150 beers
from 30 countries, a perfect way
to savour tastes from around the
world in Canada’s capital.

DID YOU KNOW...
That Ottawa is almost 90% rural in area?
In fact, our farming revenues are higher
than those of Toronto, Montréal, Vancouver,
Edmonton and Calgary combined, and
thousands of Ottawa jobs are associated
with agriculture. Ottawa’s countryside is filled
with rich farmland where you’ll find dairy
farms; fruits and vegetables; beef; lamb;
pork; chicken; game meats; honey; maple
syrup; and more. Visit www.savourottawa.ca
to see how the city’s farmers and chefs are
working together to highlight local products.

CELEBRATE
Good Times
COME ON!
YOU’RE IN OTTAWA, AND
THAT’S REASON ENOUGH
TO CELEBRATE.
Whether it’s your birthday or
anniversary, your first time in
the nation’s capital or your first
time revisiting, a day off on a
business trip or romantic getaway with your loved one, there
are plenty of ways to celebrate
in style.
Enjoy the stylish tradition of
afternoon tea at Zoé’s Lounge
inside the Fairmont Château
Laurier. The finest teas are
served alongside tidy sandwiches and light desserts making for
a splendidly posh afternoon.
See Canada’s capital from
new heights. The Canada
Aviation and Space Museum
takes you up, up, up in an open
cockpit biplane, circa 1939, for
a mesmerizing tour of Ottawa.
70
It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to jump in this Waco
UPF-7 plane for one of the five
tours on offer.
Let the stress of the world
melt away at Nordik SpaNature. About 15 minutes
from downtown Ottawa, this
outdoor oasis, open all year
round, will put your mind in a
state of ultimate relaxation.
Book hotels and packages at WWW.OTTAWATOURISM.CA
Revamped for a modish evening out, Casino du Lac-Leamy
offers nearly everything you
could want in one place. Their
restaurants have all been recreated to deliver incredible quality,
a club takes centre stage in the
main bar, and the new high
roller salon has been redesigned
to create a perfect gathering area
for you and your friends.
