“Big Band Swing Machine” features toe-tapping arrangements for vocals and a sixteen pieces jazz orchastra.
Metro Tang brings a unique
angle to jazz as the 16th annual
JazzFest at Tusten opener at
Tusten Theatre, Narrowsburg, NY,
on Saturday, May 13, 2006, at 8
p.m. The group uses standard jazz
forms, with some tunes sounding
more Latin than African, others
keeping the blues in mind.
Traditional jazz fans will hear new
twists to familiar tunes. Combining
African drumming rhythms with
funky bass lines and long flowing
melodies, the music has something
for everybody.
Metro Tang heats up JazzFest with smooth latin sounds.
Based in New York City, the outstanding musicians who comprise
Metro Tang got there from Israel,
Ecuador, New Jersey, Ohio, and the
Caribbean, and together they have
recorded and toured throughout the
world. Bandleader Chacho
Ramirez, a recent new homeowner
in Narrowsburg, is a composer and
percussionist specializing in AfroCaribbean, Latin music and jazz.
He performs throughout the metropolitan area, and has worked with
such artists as Ahmad Jamal,
Olatunji (Drums of Passion), Bo
Diddley, and Orquesta Universal,
which has just released its CD,
“New York Salsa.” Ramirez also
works regularly as a Teaching
Artist in New York area public
schools and has written a study
guide on the history of music in the
Caribbean. His quintet is rounded
out with Eldad Zvulun (piano), who
came to New York City from Israel
in 2001 under the International

Dear Members;
I am proud to announce 2006 as
the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance’s
30th Anniversary year. For the past
thirty years we’ve worked diligently
with our members, volunteers and
communities toward fulfilling our
stated motto, “The arts as a central
element in rural life.” The arts are
now integral to Sullivan County and
the Upper Delaware Valley and we
enjoy the economic and quality of life
benefits they provide.
I gratefully communicate our
appreciation to you, our members,
and to our communities for decades
of support.
Without your
patronage none
of this would
have been possible.
Delaware
Valley Arts
Alliance enjoys
hard won relationships with
the New York
State Council on
the Arts and
with State and
County legislators and has
ensured that
public monies
are designated for and distributed
directly to artists and organizations
within our county.
Yet there is always more to do:
create more opportunities and networks for individual emerging and
professional artists of all disciplines; advocate for the arts on
the local, state and national levels; create new audiences and

feature self-portraits of each of the
women. In addition, each woman
was “assigned” to create a portrait
of one of the other women who are
participating in the exhibit.
The exhibit is the brainchild of
curator/artist/photographer Joan
Glase. One of Joan’s routine tasks
while working as a commercial
fashion photographer in New York

Congratulations to all of us! The
New York State Senate and
Assembly approved an additional
$4.5 million for The New York State
Council on the Arts. Thanks to all
who took the time to call, visit,
send postcards or email their representatives. State Arts Council funding is crucial to supporting cultural
programming in our communities.
After five years of no increases, cultural organizations have been
stretched to the limit. Our request
to the legislature was to support a
NYSCA budget at the rate of $2.50
per NYS resident.
Please take a moment to

The CineArt feature film for May is the 2006 Oscar winner for
Best Foreign Film, “Tsotsi.” Based on South African playwright Athol Fugard's only novel, “Tsotsi” is a thrilling, provocative look at life in the ghettos outside present-day
Johannesburg. Presley Chweneyagae stars as the title character, a teenager with a killer stare who lives alone in a ramshackle room in a poor shantytown. “Tsotsi” (which means
“thug”) is a pulsating, electrifying film propelled by
Chweneyagae's powerful, mesmerizing performance. The
pounding soundtrack features popular local Kwaito music by
Zola, who also plays crimelord Fela in the film.
Screenings will be held at the Callicoon Theater, Callicoon, NY. on Wednesday
and Thursday, May 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, May 13 at 2 and 9:45 p.m.
and Sunday, May 14 at 2 p.m. CineArt is co-sponsored by Delaware Valley Arts
Alliance (DVAA) and the Callicoon Theatre. A percentage of the admissions and $1
per person benefits DVAA’s community arts programs. For more information call

Deadline for the July/Aug 2006 issue is June 1.
2006 Opera Season
DELAWARE VALLEY OPERA SETS SEASON IN ANCIENT EGYPT
Delaware Valley Opera’s (DVO) 2006 season will be comprised of three works of incredible
beauty from the most popular operatic repertoire, all set in Ancient Egypt. The first is George
Friederick Handel’s Julius Caesar, believed by many to be Handel’s finest opera. This is the
classic tale of Julius Caesar and the seductive young queen, Cleopatra. DVO celebrates Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart’s 250th birthday with their second opera, The Magic Flute. This impressive
opera brings together man, myth and gods in an exotic land to prove that true love overcomes all
obstacles. The season ends with Verdi’s towering masterpiece, Aida, the story of the forbidden
love of an Ethiopian slave for an Egyptian soldier who is promised to the daughter of the Pharaoh
himself. Julius Caesar and Aida will be sung in the original language with English supertitles
and The Magic Flute will be sung in an English translation by Ron DeFesi.
Four performances of each opera will be held at the Tusten Theatre in Narrowsburg, New York
and one performance of each opera will be held at the Seelig Theatre at Sullivan Co. Community
College in Loch Sheldrake, NY. For ticket information for Tusten call 845-252-7272. For Seelig
Theatre information call 845-434-5750 ext. 4303.
In addition to the operas, DVO will present Broadway a la Mode 2, a series of performances
featuring Broadway tunes and culminating in dessert!
Broadway a la Mode will be performed on Saturday evening July 15 at 7:30 p.m.,at the Tusten
Theatre in Narrowsburg, NY and Thursday evening, July 20 at 8:00 p.m. at Sullivan County
Community College in Loch Sheldrake, NY. Additional performances of “a la Mode” will be held

ARTS CENTER GALLERY
“COLOR FIELDS” in Main Gallery
Marjorie Morrow paints panoramic views in Kenoza Lake, NY
“Color Fields,” paintings by Sullivan County artist Marjorie Morrow, opens at the Delaware Arts Center Gallery, 37 Main Street, Narrowsburg,
NY, on Friday, May 19th with a reception from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The exhibition will be on view through June 9, 2006.
Marjorie Morrow was born in Newark, Ohio and graduated from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, where she majored in painting and printmaking. She attended the Blossom-Kent Art Program at Kent State University under the guidance of Richard Anuszkiewicz. Marjorie is the recipient of
the Ohio Arts Council Award and a Purchase Award from The Museum of
the Dayton Art Institute, Dayton Ohio. Most of the paintings in this exhibition are based on the panoramic views Morrow sees from her studio window in Kenoza Lake, NY. They are a result of an intense process which
often starts with the making of numerous small drawings and sketches.
Marjorie continually explores her familiar surroundings of blueberry fields,
forests, clouds and mountains until she achieves a complete intimacy with
them. Eventually the paintings, although retaining many recognizable references, are, in essence, colorful abstractions. They are no longer of a specific landscape or subject but become paintings of movement, rhythm, energy and tension. “My aim, after long study, is to capture the essence of a
place or a situation in as spontaneous an execution as possible,” says
Morrow. “The constantly changing patterns and movements in the landscape and moods in the atmosphere provide a multitude of subject matter
as a taking off point.”
Many of the graphic marks and strokes interwoven in the work reflect her
extensive background in printmaking, especially in the studies of trees and
shrubs in winter. Music is also deeply ingrained in Morrow’s life and creative process. Married to a musician and having learned piano as a child,
she continues to enjoy music as a “bridge” to her artwork, often using musical concepts in describing her artmaking. “I would say I’m conducting or
composing when I’m painting. I’m especially attracted to introspective delving. I like the minor chords the best,” she says. Color is how she reconciles
dissonant elements and what brings her compositions to life, often incorporating opposites on the color wheel. “It’s these color combinations and the
choices you make that determine what works or not in each painting. I’m
drawn to close-value/close-intensity combinations.”
Her work has been presented in solo shows at Ceres Gallery and most
recently at the TAI Gallery, both in New York City. She has also had work
included in exhibitions at the Bronx Museum, NY; the Cincinnati Art
Museum, OH; Kent State University, OH; Provincetown Art Museum, MA;
P.S. One, NYC, Soho 20 Gallery NYC, Ten Downtown NYC, and the London Institute of Contemporary Art among other venues. She divides her time
between New York City and Sullivan County.
“Color Fields” is sponsored by the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, the Arts Council for Sullivan County, NY, and is made possible in part with funding from the Visual Arts Program of the New York State Council on the Arts. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
For more information about the exhibit call the arts center at 845-252-7576.

“Meditations: Flow” in Arts Center
Miriam Hernández’s work is about process
“Meditations: Flow,” paintings by Sullivan County artist Miriam Hernández, opens at the Delaware Arts Center Gallery, 37 Main Street,
Narrowsburg, NY, on Friday, June 16th with a reception from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The exhibition will be on view through July 7, 2006.
Born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, Miriam Hernández began her artistic training at the
High School of Art and Design in New York City. While receiving her B.A. in painting
at Queens College, Hernández studied under artists such as John Ferren, Charles
Cajori, James Brooks, Robert Birmelin, and George McNeil. Her interest in color
flourished under the teaching of art scholar Herb Aach. Shortly after receiving her
M.F.A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Hernández began to
show her work, mostly in alternative exhibition spaces in NYC, where she lived from
the age of nine.
Miriam Hernández’s work is about process. Her creative expression has encompassed many disciplines, among them photography, sculpture, printmaking and
installation work, but it is in painting that she has produced her largest body of work.
For the past ten years her strong interest in traditional Buddhist art, especially
sculpture, has dominated her imagery. “My work is layered in content and technique,
and unfolds in the stages of combining materials of paint, ink, collage and pencil
which brings to the surface images that are both common and mysterious. These are
images familiar and readable to the viewer which at the same time can be elusive and
esoteric,” says Miriam.
“The most recent paintings include personal interpretations of yoga meditation
imagery, and the reintroduction of a vibrant color palette,” states Hernández. “The
works in this new series attempt to represent the capturing of energy present in the
universe that can be channeled in and through the human body. These works, which
are included in the current exhibition, continue the attempt to portray states of meditation and consciousness in an accessible and personal format.” The paintings are
intimate in intent and size (many of them 10 x 8 or 12 x 9 inches). The viewer is
encouraged to step up close to the work and examine the details of layers, color and
form that make up each painting, inviting engagement and mindful interaction. “My
attempt is to portray constant tension and dialogue between the figure and ground,
between the self and the surrounding world,” she explains.
Shortly after Hernández’s first solo show at the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance in
2002, a fire destroyed the building where she and her partner lived in NYC, along
with most of her 30 years’ worth of art work. Aside from the trauma experienced as a
result of the fire, the awareness of the transient nature of all things made a profound Disintegrate mixed media on plexi 8”x12”
mark. The acceptance of this awareness is something Hernández is grateful for, especially since it is one of the major precepts of Buddhism, the
study of which she has been following for over thirty years. Five years ago, Hernandez and her partner bought a house in Jeffersonville in Sullivan
County and live there on weekends and during the summer. The rest of the time they live in Peekskill, New York.
“MEDITATIONS: FLOW” is sponsored by the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, the Arts Council for Sullivan County, NY, and is made possible in
part with funding from the Visual Arts Program of the New York State Council on the Arts. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10
a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about the exhibit call the arts center at 845-252-7576.

tographs that were taken by other
women photographers. “I could clearly see that the women photographers
had their own style and view when it
came to photographing women. It
was a look I could almost always
identify without even asking.”
Thus the concept was born to
mount a photo show of women by
women. Joan took it a step further
and initiated the self-portrait concept. “Creating a self-portrait is difficult enough in itself. But this show
presents an additional challenge for
the photographers. For one thing,
they are not working with models.
Shooting normal, everyday looking
people can be much more difficult
than shooting experienced, profes-
sional models,” says Joan. “Plus,
many photographers are notorious for
not wanting to be photographed themselves. They are often the most camera shy. And in some cases they want
to direct the shoot themselves, which
can become a battle over control.”
Despite the challenges, the results
are stunning. These are not your typical portraits. These talented women
have created a mix of several uniquely different styles of beautifully executed photographs. Each portrait is a
work of art ranging from romantic
and fantasy-like to quirky and whimsical to mysterious and surreal.
Many images are individual portraits
while others comprise a series that
unfolds in the viewer’s imagination

as a story. The exhibit itself is a mix
of digital as well as traditional photography techniques and features
both black and white and color photographs.
Ms. Glase, who herself is one of the
photographers in the exhibit, is quite
pleased with the outcome. When
asked why no men photographers
were included in the exhibit, she
states, “Even though there are a
number of very successful women
photographers, the field is still dominated by men. I feel this is a great
opportunity to see the abilities of
some talented women who might otherwise not get any exposure. After
all, the majority of images of women
that we see on a daily basis, such as
in magazines and so on, are men’s
perceptions of women. Now here’s an
opportunity to show our vision of the
‘better half ’.”
The women participating in the
exhibit are: Lauren Agaste, Joyce
Baronio, Jane Derrick Biron, JeanneMarie Derrick, Joan Glase, Joanna
Jennings, Robin Love, Joan Rafferty,
Kate Warren, Leslie Yudelson, and
Barbara Zweig.
“As We See Us” is sponsored by the
Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, the
Arts Council for Sullivan County, NY,
and is made possible in part with
funding from the Visual Arts
Program of the New York State
Council on the Arts. Gallery hours
are Tuesday through Saturday from
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about the exhibit call the Arts
