MAY2012 - Stampin` Up!
MAY2012
Several years ago, I discovered
Bikram yoga and fell in love! I am
definitely a Bikram yoga fanatic,
and I have learned to make yoga
a top priority. I simply feel better
when I’ve taken the time to take
care of myself.
In yoga, learning the art of balance
is essential for success. And it’s not
easy! Transitioning from one pose
to the next, stretching muscles and
increasing blood flow, requires not
just physical balance but a mental
and emotional balance as well. But
the effort is well worth the sense
of peace and renewed energy you
feel when you finish a session.
I’ve learned the same lesson in life.
We must work toward balance in
order to live a meaningful and joyful
life. Balance is so important, in fact,
that it’s one of our eight Stampin’
Up!® principles. The principle states:
We are dedicated to those who strive
to create balanced lifestyles centered
on serving family and others while
nurturing their own self-esteem and
personal growth.
balance on page 16.
And once you’ve achieved balance,
that doesn’t mean you stay balanced.
Even after years of yoga, I still find
myself toppling over once in a while;
maintaining that balance between
physical, emotional, mental, and
spiritual needs is definitely an
ongoing process!
Creating a balanced lifestyle simply
means that we’re aware of what we’re
doing and where we’re spending
our time, and we’re consistently
evaluating where our time and efforts
are best spent. It’s definitely not easy,
but just as in yoga, the sense of peace
and accomplishment we feel as we
strive to find that balance is definitely
worth all the effort!
Balance in our lives doesn’t always
mean that we’re spending equal
amounts of time doing things. Some
days we may end up spending an
entire day being a demonstrator,
or a wife, or a mother, or a friend.
And depending on the season of
life we’re in, we may spend long
periods of time focusing on some
responsibilities, knowing we’ll
have time to devote to other
priorities later.

Flower Fun There are so many ways to create flowers, but one of our
favorite tools is the Blossom Petals Punch. It’s a builder punch, which
means you punch multiple coordinating shapes all at once. You can
layer the shapes and mix and match for lots of creative options. Check
out the gorgeous flowers adorning the cake on this month’s cover—
that’s right, they’re made using the Blossom Petals Punch.
If you haven’t already, try the Blossom Petals Punch. You’ll love it,

step it up
SIMPLE CHANGES. ANY PROJECT.
ANY STAMPER.
So Fun, So Easy
Take a basic page design, make a
few changes, and presto—you’ve
just stepped up your page!
It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3:
1. Add products, like chipboard.
2. Try techniques, like splattering.
3. Add elements, like stamped images.
Anyone Can Do It
No matter their skill level, your
customers can learn to take a basic
design and make it more complex
as they build their confidence and
creativity. Teach them how easy it
is—a workshop is the perfect place
for this kind of demonstration.
For this project, we used core products
(stamps, ink, and paper) to step it up—
proving that you can use any product
to take your project to the next level.
Why not step it up with stamps?
Most of the time, we use stamps
as the foundation for a project,
but this time, we stamped the
chipboard for extra dimension.
Put those ink refills to good use
with the splattering technique.
Absorb some ink with a paintbrush
and lightly tap it over your project
to create little pops of color.
Don’t forget paper. Or, in this
case, chipboard, which not only
boosts your project, but can
boost your sales too. Upsell at
your next workshop by saying,
“Our On Board Merry Medley
Chipboard is a great way to add
depth to any project. And, the
shapes and numbers coordinate
with several of our Simply
Scrappin’® kits and punches.”
Next time you step up a project,
don’t be afraid to play around
with many different products
because you never know where
it might lead you.

white StazOn ink—an ink to impress
Have you ever wanted to deck
out your favorite leather jacket
with “stamping bling”? No?
Okay, so maybe you’re not that
fanatical about stamping on
every surface imaginable, but
we know you love occasionally
stamping on something other
than the old card stock standby.
With White StazOn ink, you can
do just that. This impressive
ink is quick-drying, permanent,
and can be used on a number
of nonporous and semi-porous
surfaces—from cellophane bags
and Treat Cups to glass and
metal and, yes . . . even leather.
Scripting Suggestions
• “This unique ink is a
must-have in your craft
supplies! It’s perfect for
stamping on nonporous
surfaces like Window
Sheets, Vellum Paper,
and cellophane bags—so
don’t forget to add those
to your order, too.”
• “Are you looking for
an inexpensive and fun
way to give a small gift
or treat? Just stamp a
cellophane bag with
White StazOn ink and
tie the bag with ribbon
or twill tape.”
It’s simple to use and creates
stunning results, making it
perfect for a Make & Take or
demonstration. To show it in
action, all you need to do is ink
your image, then stamp—just
as usual. (And no need to heat
set!) When your customers see
its ease and versatility, they’ll
want to add it to their ink
collection ASAP.
When you stamp with White
StazOn, you’ll get a unique
image every time. Notice how
the image opacities come
through in varying degrees
on our projects. You’ll love the
gorgeous impressions of this
thick ink.

Inking Your Pad
The pad comes uninked so you’ll need to
ink it before you first use it, and re-ink it
at least every six months. To ink, simply
use the refill to drop the ink across the

seep into the pad for a couple of minutes.

the magic of mixing and matching
Scrapbooking has been a favorite
creative hobby for years, and it’s
only growing in popularity as a
new generation discovers the joy
that it brings. And when you throw
digital creativity into the picture,

matching digital scrapbooking
with “real” embellishments) appeals

• D on’t try to do it alone. You might
feel like you’re expected to be a lone
superhero, but don’t stumble into that
pitfall. Whether it’s letting your
spouse or kids help with the chores
around the house or asking your
downline to lend a hand, delegating
some of your tasks will help keep
your tasks from running away with
all your time.
Missy Shipman, a senior executive
from Baldwinsville, New York, shares,
“I am learning to delegate team
meeting responsibilities. I love having
demonstrators present tips at our
meetings. Someone also brings a
snack each month. Recently, we added
the role of ‘reporter’ to our volunteer
list. This person shares news from
Stampin' Success and the website, and
gives reminders about promotions.”
• Plan ahead. That may be an obvious
balancing
Business
your
many
roles
Chances are, work-life balance
has been on your list of goals at
one point or another—or, like for
many of us, it never actually leaves
your list! While there’s no magic
formula to guarantee you’ll achieve
balance, here are a few ideas that
can help you on that journey.
one (and often a difficult one), but
doing so can have dramatic results in
your ability to balance. Plan for work
time and family time, and be willing
to say no when work might cross into
your family time.
Missy shares, “I think it is important
for us to evaluate how busy we’re able
to be. I love papercrafting and making
things—I would like to do it all day
and all night! And sharing the creative
process with others is very rewarding
to me, so sometimes it is tempting to
schedule too many events. I need to
look at my calendar—at the whole
month—and write down all the
basketball games, hockey practices,
band concerts, meetings, etc. for the
whole family. If it looks like I have
an open night for a workshop, I have
to consider what the other nights
look like that week. It may be that
that night needs to be an
‘everybody will be home tonight’
night instead of a workshop
night for me.”
• Involve your family. Having your
support team involved in your
business can help you have a little
more time for both!
S
usan Campfield, an executive
from St. Paul, Minnesota, shares,
“I think it is important to keep the
lines of communication open to
your family about your Stampin’
Up! business—your successes and
excitement. Sometimes work gets
in the way of something fun my
son wants to do. For example:
‘Can we go to a movie, Mom?’
’No, I’m doing a Stampin’ Up!
party tonight. If this party goes
well, we are going to be closer to
earning Disney! Do you want to
help me by cutting some things
on the Big Shot?’ I think including
him helps him tolerate the times
when I’m caught up with my
business and helps him pick up
values about working hard to
get what you want.”
Be realistic and go easy on
yourself! We all know we should
have balance, but it’s not really
possible all the time. Surprises
are going to come up, and things
are going to happen beyond your
control. And some days are just so
crazy that you might only be able
to get one item checked off your
list. But don’t expect perfection—
forgive yourself and simply commit
to doing your best and everything
will work out in the long run!

mess-free watercoloring
IF YOU LOVE TO WATERCOLOR
BUT HATE THE MESS, TRY THE
AQUA PAINTER
You know that you can use an Aqua
Painter for mess-free watercoloring—
it’s portable and easy to use, with no
risk of spilling water all over your
work area. It can pull color from
Stampin’ Pads, Watercolor Wonder®
Crayons, and Watercolor Pencils, and
it can blend colors that are already on
your paper. But like any good tool, the
Aqua Painter has more than one
function. Try one of these ideas and
see what you think.
Two Aqua Painters come in
each package: one with a
medium brush tip, and one with
a large brush tip.
The reservoir holds about 1-1/2
teaspoons of liquid.
tips:
To use, carefully squeeze
the barrel of the painter. If you
apply too much pressure, the
liquid might come out too fast.
For best results, empty the
barrel and wipe moisture from
the brush tip for storage.
Liquid acrylics or shellac-based
ink can damage the reservoir;
fill the reservoir with water or
water-soluble liquids (with the
consistency of water) only.
To clean an Aqua Painter, wipe
the brush on paper until the
color disappears.
Bright, random spots of color are
a surprising addition on a demure
card. To create the ink spots on
this card, our artist filled the Aqua
Painter reservoir halfway full and
added 10 drops of Island Indigo
Classic Stampin’ Ink.

» Plan a watercoloring workshop and
let each guest make a card. You could
say, “Did you know that watercoloring
is something you can do on the go? The
Aqua Painter stores its own water so
when you want to color, just pull out the
Aqua Painter.” Have some other samples
on hand, such as the ones we made, to
show them what else they can do with
an Aqua Painter.
Diluted ink creates an interesting
background for a stamped image.
Using the Aqua Painter filled with
water, wet the Watercolor Paper
(after it’s been cut) and squeeze a
few drops of Classic Stampin’ Ink
onto the paper. The ink will spread.
Let it dry and stamp on top.

furry and fabulous
SHARE OUR FURRY FOLK SET
Furry and fun—that’s what many
people think when they see the
Furry Folk Set (shown on page 89
of the Idea Book & Catalog). It’s an
understandable first impression
since the adorable images in this
set are designed to bring an “Aw,
how sweet.”
These furry little folk may be cute,
but they’re also perfect for projects
throughout the year. Make the
two birds the focus of a love or
friendship card. Use the flower and
butterfly to create a springtime
project. The acorn ushers in fall.
And these are only a few of the
options available to you. Once you
show customers everything they
can do with this set, they won’t
just say it’s fun—they’ll call it
fabulous and phenomenal. Take

a penny for
your projects
STAMPING IS IN PENNY HANUSZAK’S BLOOD,
AND HER CUSTOMERS ARE THE BETTER FOR IT!
When Penny Hanuszak, first saw the
Papaya Collage Set, a brand-new set
from the 2012–2013 catalog, she admits
she was a little intimidated. “The stamps
didn’t seem to relate to each other. . . .
However, once I decided on my theme,
I was excited to see how well they
actually work together, and I know
it’s a set I’ll use again and again.”

And how did she come up with her
theme? “I was inspired by two upcoming
spring events: my mom’s ninetieth
birthday and Mother’s Day.” Penny
wanted to capture the same look and
feel of the vintage photo in the memory
book. “I originally planned on using
spring colors in my projects. But the
more I thought about vintage, I kept
envisioning sepia photographs, so I
switched to Mocha Morning Specialty
Designer Series Paper,” she says. “My
decision to use Calypso Coral came
from looking at the handpainted blush
in an old photo of my grandmother’s
face. It seemed to be a perfect match
with the sepia/brown tones of the
Designer Series Paper.”
Since becoming a Stampin’ Up!
demonstrator in 2006, Penny has
grown her business by offering classes,
workshops, and open houses, as well
as excellent customer service. “I
really, really pay attention to what
my customers are saying and doing,”
she shares. “I encourage them to bring
in samples of what they’ve made using
Stampin’ Up! products so I can become
familiar with their style and the
products they love.” She also follows

Penny has certainly caught the

spring cleaning your computer
Spring is in the air, and with it
comes the desire to clean up,
fix up, and paint up. Why not
extend your spring cleaning
to electronic housekeeping,
organizing your computer
and e-mail so that you control
the technology available to
you—and not the other way
around! After all, the most
successful demonstrators
have mastered the art of
getting a lot done in a short
amount of time—and refusing
to spend too many hours on
the computer puts you one
step closer toward achieving
that goal!
Electronic Filing System
Develop a filing system that
works for you. By organizing
your computer—moving files
to folders, cleaning out unused
files and programs, and
deleting unnecessary desktop
shortcuts—you’ll remove
distractions and save time.
When you come across creative
ideas while surfing the Internet,
categorize them into folders for
quick and easy access. Later,
when you need a design for a
July watermelon bash or a
family picnic, you can go right
to your summer projects
folder—without spending half
the morning on the Internet!
E-mail Inbox
Taking control of your e-mail
inbox is an important step
on the way to managing
computer use. Dealing with
high-priority e-mail first,
setting aside a limited amount
of time to read and answer
e-mail, and unsubscribing
from newsletters and e-mail
that you don’t read can go a
long way toward taming the
e-mail time-wasting monster.
You might also consider
turning off e-mail notifications
(from your smartphone, too!)
so you don’t feel obligated
to answer them immediately.
Also, be sure to create an
e-mail signature that does
your work for you. Include
phrases like “I love what I do
as a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator”
or “Want to learn more about
creativity? I’m a Stampin’ Up!
demonstrator and would love
to help!”
E-mail Auto Reply
Your e-mail program’s out of
office tool allows you to send
an instant reply to anyone
attempting to contact you
while you are away from your
computer. Make your message
informative, and try to
anticipate any questions that
might be quick and easy to
answer. Also, refer customer
questions to your website or
blog, and direct your downline
to the demonstrator website
or Demonstrator Support.
Always leave the door open
for more bookings by saying
something like, “If you’d like
to schedule an exciting
workshop, send me a quick
e-mail with the date and I will
get back to you as soon as I
return!” Or create excitement
for an upcoming event by
saying, “Don’t miss out on the
stamp club next month—we’re
making beautiful banners!
Visit my blog for more info!”
Spending a few hours to
organize and manage the
use of your computer will
pay off in the long run, freeing
up time for you, your family,
and for other areas of your
business. After all, we’d all
rather be stamping than sitting
in front of the computer—
unless, of course, we’re

What’s your favorite stamp set,

don’t have every ribbon but I have
a lot!); watercoloring with Watercolor
Wonder Crayons and the Aqua Painter
(one of the most relaxing things I do).
My Way
How did you discover Stampin’ Up!?
I was studying calligraphy and used
stamps (not Stampin’ Up! stamps)
attend a workshop, and I took
my 12-year-old daughter Cindy
along. We both fell in love with
stamping, and we went to lots of
stamp camps together and even
hosted a workshop together. Cindy
wanted me to sign up so we could
get free products! I was excited
to have a way to connect with my
daughter through those turbulent
teen years, plus I wanted to teach
my friends about stamping. (Cindy
still makes and sells cards to
to illustrate my calligraphy. I
introduced a friend of mine to
stamping, and she was so excited
she started searching online for
everything stamping. She found
Stampin’ Up! and signed up; two
years later, I signed up too. I never
imagined that decision would lead
to a full-time job!
What do you enjoy most about
Stampin’ Up!? I love teaching
others that they are creative
and helping them enjoy their
creativity. I also love the many
friendships I have made.
How do you build your business?
I don’t advertise, and I don’t have
an enormous blog following,
but I am consistent. I think that’s
been the key to my growth. I
have classes, clubs, workshops,
and parties, and my customers
bring their friends to me. Plus I
am fortunate enough to be able
finance her education and other
activities.) Nine years and nine
incentive trips later, I am still
thrilled every day that I get to
and our innovative products
with my friends.
How has Stampin’ Up! helped you
become a better person? I enjoy
the process of learning new
skills and putting those skills
into practice and then sharing
them. It has been a delight to
learn not only the stamping
skills but also the leadership
skills it takes to build a thriving
business. I think that is why
the Stampin’ Up! leadership
conference is one of my very
favorite events.
This year I want to become a
better leader, investing in my
downline and helping them
make this a fabulous year—
I want them each to have
fulfilling relationships that
nurture their lives.
How else has Stampin’ Up! changed
your life? Tom is my supporting
demonstrator, and he works hard
alongside me. What a blessing
to raise our family together and
own our own business! Stampin’
Up! has beautifully shaped the
fabric of our lives.
to do this full time, which I’m
sure has helped.
I believe in pampering my
customers as much as possible
and make sure that they feel
successful when they make
a project.
What have you learned as a
Stampin’ Up! demonstrator?
I have learned so much! I
have had many jobs over the
years, and I easily became
bored and would have to ask
for additional responsibilities.
Not so with Stampin’ Up! Being
a demonstrator has so many
dimensions, and I love being
my own boss. There is always
something more to learn and
always more on my list than
I can ever accomplish! My
only complaint? I don’t get to
stamp enough!

then go ahead and order it. Demonstrate
it in many ways, showing its versatility
and value. Have multiple samples of
the unique and beautiful cards you can
make using the set. Once you’ve sold
five, the 20 percent profit on each will
have covered the cost of your set. Then,
you can invest in others with the same
thinking.

Budget your time. Make sure you have
stampin’ play time, stampin’ work time,
and stampin’ off time. That way you can
focus on your family and yourself which
will make all your time more enjoyable.

shirt. Carry mini catalogs stamped with
your information on them to give away
to people who express an interest in
what you do (they are the best business
cards ever!). Carry two or three card

Work hard in the beginning to book
workshops, schedule classes, etc. Try to
schedule several events at the beginning
of each quarter so you are not left at the
end of the quarter scrambling to get sales.
It will prevent a lot of stress in your life
and your business if you have met your
quarterly minimum at the beginning of the
quarter. Everything after that is a bonus!

Do what’s comfortable for you. Stampin’
Up! provides us with all kinds of ideas and
suggestions to help our business, both from
the home office and from other successful
demonstrators. It is important to customize
those suggestions and ideas to fit your life
and your customers. Don’t be discouraged
if you’re not ready or able to immediately
hold multiple workshops, open houses,
opportunity nights, and schedule classes
and clubs right out of the gate. Start where
you are comfortable and gradually take
on a little more until you build the kind of
business that you want to have.

“My inspiration came from a birthday paper plate. First, I drew the

artisan award
contest changes
We’ve made some exciting changes to
the annual Artisan Award contest,
starting with the name. We are happy
to introduce the new Artisan Design
Team opportunity! We will select 10 of
our most talented demonstrators to
help us share creativity all year long!
Each month, design team members will
receive FREE products (valued up to $250
us/$310 can) selected by Stampin’ Up!
to create a variety of projects that will
excite and inspire others to explore
Stampin’ Up! products.
Artisan Design Team members will need
to maintain an active demonstratorship
during the one-year commitment.
Applicants must be willing to participate
in the following Artisan Design Team
responsibilities each month, which include:
• Creating a minimum of four projects
using free products selected and
provided by Stampin’ Up!
•P
roducing a high-quality photograph
of each project and submitting the
photos electronically to Stampin’ Up!
•M
aintaining a personal blog or DBWS
site to showcase the projects.
If you’re not excited yet, here are some
other changes:
• Demonstrators of all titles are welcome
to apply for the Artisan Design Team—
including past Artisan Award winners.
• This year the deadline has been extended
until May 31, 2012, to give you more time
to create!
Here are just a few things that
are NOT changing:
• The selected design team members
will receive an Artisan Design Team
memento, $500 cash, and a $500
Stampin' Up! shopping spree.
•T
he selected design team members
will be invited to attend a reception
held at Convention 2012.
•A
pplications must include five cards
(not card fronts), three scrapbook
pages (8" x 8", 8-1/2" x 11", or 12" x 12",
single-page layout only), and two threedimensional items. All applications must
use current Stampin' Up! products only.
This includes all products available for
sale by Stampin' Up! during the contest
dates, including My Digital Studio.
However, three-dimensional items
may use items such as frames, boxes,
etc. that are not available from
Stampin' Up!
Start creating today! Watch for more
information on the demonstrator
website, including submission details,
complete official rules, frequently asked
questions, and the Artisan Design Team
Application.
