Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister - Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden
Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister –
Old Masters Picture Gallery
The fame of the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister is
based on masterpieces such as Raphael’s “Sistine
Madonna”, Giorgione’s “Sleeping Venus”, Correggio’s
“Holy Night”, Cranach’s “St Catherine’s Altarpiece”,
Vermeer’s “Girl Reading a Letter by an Open Window”
and Bellotto’s views of Dresden. Other famous
paintings by artists such as Van Eyck, Rembrandt,
Rubens, Dürer, Holbein, Titian, Veronese, Canaletto,
Poussin, Watteau, El Greco, Murillo, Raeburn and
Graff invite careful study and contemplation: a
gathering of the crème de la crème of European art
from the late Renaissance to the Rococo period.
The collection is located in the gallery building at
the Zwinger. This was constructed in 1855 after
plans drawn up by the architect Gottfried Semper,
and it was one of the most important museum
projects in Germany during the 19 th century.
For structural and technical reasons, major repairs
to the gallery building have been necessary. In
association with the company Sächsisches Immo
bilien- und Baumanagement, the Staatliche Kunst
sammlungen Dresden have now finished the first
part of this renovation project extending over
several years. The completion of the second phase
is planned for 2018.
You are now in the recently completed eastern
wing of the gallery and can already see some im
portant new features of the building. For example,
the colour concept in the exhibition rooms has been
fundamentally changed. The installation of a new
air conditioning system is another important imp
rovement – although you cannot see it, its effects
are tangible. Some details, such as the exhibition
labelling system, are still in a testing phase. Trial
runs during the interim exhibitions are intended to
help arrive at the best possible solution in terms of
visitor-friendliness.

This temporary show is the first time that the
eastern wing has been used for exhibiting paint
ings. The large columned hall in which the exhibi
tion begins provides a concentrated tour through
the history of 15th and 16th-century painting.
The current exhibition moves away from the tra
ditional principle of hanging paintings according
to schools, drawing attention instead to stylistic
constellations across Europe. Thus, Italian, Spanish,
Flemish, Dutch, German, French, English and Swiss
artists are brought together in various groupings –
focusing on the themes of portraits, still-lifes,
Caravaggism or the pastel technique. Visitors will
find an exhibition of European painting which
illustrates both unifying and separating features
that transcend national borders.
