Spring 2016 - Waterfront Plaza
Waterfront Plaza Earth Hour and Earth Day When discussing sustainability, it’s hard not to be reminded of two world-wide events: Earth Hour and Earth Day. Earth Hour is organized by World Wildlife Fund for Nature and was born with the hope of encouraging people to take action in effecting a positive climate change. Today, global initiatives, spread across 152 countries, will cause the lights to be switched off for an hour as a demonstration of concern for the environment’s sustainability. Earth Day is another global campaign in which numerous events are held throughout the world to demonstrate mass support for environmental protection. This year, it is going to be celebrated on April 22nd. Waterfront Plaza will be commemorating Earth Hour by turning off all nonessential lighting from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. (HST) on Saturday, March 19th. In honor of Earth Day, we will again be hosting the Kaka'ako Cleanup on Saturday, May 14th from 8:00 a.m. — 11:00 a.m. This year, the event will be expanded to include hosting a recycling event, which will involve pickup and drop-off of electronics, printer cartridges, and toner. This is our 5th year hosting the event, and it is a wonderful opportunity for businesses and residents of this community to partner together. property managed by THE SHIDLER GROUP NEWSLETTER Spring 2016 FEATURED TENANTS Energy Industries Corporation ‘EKAH1 Health System UPCOMING EVENTS Books are Fun SOHI Polar Plunge Hawaii Food Bank Food Drive Hospice Hawaii Hot Pursuit PROPERTY UPDATES Free Public WiFi South Street Delivery Policy Yoga Classes at WFP Steven Sullivan (S) VP of Operations, Waterfront Plaza Before and After photos of the lighting retrofit of the breezeway between Buildings 2 and 3. Before After FE AT U R E D TENA NT Energy Industries Corporation Helping to Light a Path to a Brighter Tomorrow Waterfront Plaza became a “brighter” place with the addition of Energy Industries Corporation (EIC), which moved their corporate office here late last year. EIC, founded in 1994, is an energy efficiency provider that helps their customers generate long-term energy and maintenance cost savings. Their three specialty areas are: Thermal — providing HVAC, motors, drives, energy controls and high efficiency boilers; Light — providing energy efficient lighting solutions; and Solar — providing photovoltaic (PV) systems to commercial and industrial clients. EIC has an impressive list of clients, which span a variety of industries, including Kuakini Health System, First Hawaiian Bank, Macy’s, Damien Memorial School, YMCA and Hardware Hawaii. What’s equally impressive is the clientele they’ve worked with in other parts of the country, including FedEx, Boeing, Anheuser-Busch, Yahoo!, Kendall-Jackson Wineries, and many more. Here’s a short Q&A with Duane Ashimine, President, and Ken Shimada, Chief Operating Officer. What made you decide to relocate your corporate office to Waterfront Plaza? We wanted to be closer to town, but not right in the downtown area, as being easily accessible to our clients and business partners is important. We were also looking for a location with an open design that wasn’t too congested, and professional in appearance. Waterfront Plaza fit our needs perfectly. 02 | ENERGY INDUSTRIES CORPORATION Tell us about the project your company just completed here at Waterfront Plaza. We recently retrofitted the lighting fixtures in three breezeways; between Buildings 2 and 3, Buildings 5 and 6, and Buildings 6 and 7. The areas now have improved light levels and better surrounding color; it’s also helped to reduce energy consumption and will save on long-term maintenance costs. Lighting technology has evolved considerably over the last several years. It’s no longer just a light bulb. When you combine the right products with proper planning and design, a company can save on energy costs and create a safer, more productive work environment. What advice do you have for companies considering solar or other alternative forms of energy production? Our philosophy is “reduce” then “produce.” Find ways to reduce your energy consumption first. This may be through lighting or mechanical system upgrades. Once that’s done, then look at investing in energy production through products like solar PV. By increasing your energy efficiency, you may find you don’t need as big a PV system as you originally thought. Also, by looking at the total picture, you’ll realize longer-term savings and have a more reliable system in place. How does your company manage to successfully expand both here in Hawaii and elsewhere? We have a really great group of employees, who are extremely committed to delivering the best possible results to our clients. That’s been the key to our success. We also realize being a Hawaii-based company is an advantage in other parts of the country. Hawaii has a talented labor pool with some of the brightest minds in the business. We work hard and build relationships the right way, and that translates well wherever we do business. Last October, we welcomed ‘Ekahi Health System to Waterfront Plaza. ‘Ekahi Health is a one-stop shop for all your healthcare needs, including access to primary care specialists, urgent care clinics, and care management teams. ‘Ekahi’s Waterfront Plaza clinic focuses on Care Management and is where they offer Dr. Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease™. This nationally recognized program has been scientifically proven to stop the progression and even reverse the effects of heart disease. In just the few short months that they’ve been open at Waterfront Plaza, dozens of participants have already completed the program with remarkable results. Here’s a short Q&A with Jennifer Awakuni, Assistant Vice President of ‘Ekahi Health System. Why did you choose to base your Care Management program at Waterfront Plaza? We wanted a location that was centrally-located in a vibrant, growing community, and yet easily accessible to people from all over the island. We also felt we’d be a nice complement to some of the other healthcare related tenants here at Waterfront. You offer the Ornish Reversal Program, which has been nationally-recognized for reversing heart disease and improving your health. What does the program entail? It’s a nine-week program, which the participants 03 | ‘EKAHI HEALTH SYSTEM go through as a group. Everyone in the group has a common goal of either reversing their heart disease, or improving their health and well-being. The participants come to the clinic twice a week, and work with an expert team of healthcare practitioners, who will develop a personalized plan to improve four important areas of your life: how much exercise you have, what you eat, how you respond to stress, and how much love and support you have. What kind of results should you expect after completing the nine-week program? You’ll improve the quality of your life, reduce the risk of a heartrelated event, learn to manage stress more effectively and, with your doctor’s guidance, you may even reduce or discontinue many medications you may have been taking for ailments, such as diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. For participants trying to keep their weight under control, the average weight loss has been 10–12 pounds, and the weight is kept off, because the program leads to a change in lifestyle. Is the program open to anyone, including Waterfront tenants? Yes, as long as they meet the eligibility requirements. If Waterfront tenants or even their friends or family members are interested, they can call our office to see if they are eligible. This can all be done over the phone, or they are welcome to stop by our office in building 6-D. In fact, we’re having our next Open House on Wednesday, March 16th, and we’d like to invite all our fellow Waterfront tenants to come by between the hours of 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm. We’ll have food and refreshments, you can take a tour of our facility, and we can answer any questions you may have. Just call our office at 777-4001 to RSVP. We look forward to meeting you!
