PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
BARBARA KINNEY
T
urk Murphy Memories played to a full House February 22! The good music
and stories by Pat Yankee made a very happy afternoon. It was also a reminder
how precious this music is, so it’s up to all of us to keep it alive. Every Jazz Society
struggles with the same problems, but somehow we need to protect the music and
the venues where musicians can play.
March 22 features Mission Gold Jazz Band led by John Soulis with a long time
South Bay member Ray Buhler playing the reeds. Also featured for one Jam Set
will be Dixie Dominus, the popular and talented youth band from Fremont Christian
High School. They just returned from an engagement at the Fresno Dixieland
Festival where they played on Valentines Day and were very well received.
See you all on Sunday March 22.
Barbara Kinney, President
R.I.P.
RAFFLE
As popular as our monthly raffle has
seemed to be with some participants
there has been no response to the plea
here for someone to take over running
it. And this isn’t the only place that has
happened. Even the Fresno Dixieland
Society, this year, did not have the lavish
layout of donations seen at their annual
Mardi Gras. The reason was the same
as we have; no person wanted to take
on the job. It seems that the raffle here
has gone on forever; does anyone
remember when there wasn’t one?
With tremendous thanks to generous
members of this and other clubs who
came repeatedly with attractive and
interesting items as prizes and sighs of
regret we end what had seemed an
institution at every monthly music
session. It used to be that a guest band
always donated a CD that was one of
the door prizes, but that hasn’t happened
in a long time.
We’ll continue to give tickets for each
paid entry at the door, however. Those
will be for an issue of The American
Rag and a certificate entitling the winner
to three months subscription. It seems
like the end of an era, and we hope it
doesn’t mean the end of anything else
that keeps us happily listening, dancing
and enjoying the people we meet during
our Sunday afternoons with traditional
jazz.

THE SOUNDS OF
T
he Sounds of Mardi Gras Festival really lived up to its
reputation of being a fabulous festival on February 1215th celebrating 31 years. The festival organizers were honored
and rightly so. Festival directors Dene Oatman and Art
Drolette, and festival president Linda Shipp and their teams
put tremendous time and talent into making this the success it
has become. They have put the Fresno Mardi Gras back on
top of must-go-to festivals. Mardi Gras is held at the Fresno
Convention Center and the adjoining Double Tree Hotel, and
is all under one roof. The hotel has a new name, and has
been refurbished; the rooms are beautiful and very
comfortable.
Being modeled after New Orleans Mardi Gras, the weekend
has many fun parades and a tradition of crowning of a king
and queen chosen annually from hard working boosters. The
past two years the first parade (called Putting on the Ritz)
was all about Prohibition complete with creative signs, flappers,
gangsters and molls. The parades pass through all four venues
and energize everyone; it sets the mood for the fun to follow.
People flew in early from Seattle to help put up fabulous
decorations.
parasollers that come to Fresno. Spontaneous parades break
out throughout the festival, especially when Mary and I hear
the right music beat as we carry extra parasols so that anyone
that wants to can strut with us.
The Crowning the King and Queen is a special event that
honors a couple that have given a lot to jazz. Many former
Kings and Queens are well known to us all including our own
Jim Harget and his lady Stella Reed in 2008 . Last years King
and Queen Mike Smith and Patty Brittian passed the crown
to their successors Chet and Eileen Jaeger. The court are
also the people behind the scenes that make festivals like this
happen. The costume parade on Saturday night is led by the
new royal couple and their court. The costumes this year
were amazing; so creative, some so good we didn’t even
recognize who wore them.
The closing we enjoyed was in a packed ballroom, the Sequoia
room when High Sierra gave us a rousing send off. Such a
high energy finish, such an amazing group of musicians. Devil
Mountain from Oakley, CA closed in another room with a
great crowd. An extra event, a Wind Down dinner is always
held on Sunday evening for those who stay another night.
The same bands that opened Thursday night played again for
dancing or visiting.
We stayed much later than usual on Sunday, and we had
such a wonderful time with so many friends, the music and
everything that goes into a successful festival. The handsome
annual program explains all of that and more with discussions
of Mardi Gras and Prohibition. Checking the sponsors page
shows that many members of South Bay Traditional Jazz
Society are proud supporters of this festival, too.
Written by Carol Goedde (one of the twins)
& Joy Stone
Mary and I arrived early enough to join the festivities Thursday
evening when four highly popular bands: Bob Schulz Frisco
J. B., Grand Dominion, Tom Hook & the Terriers, and Climax
J.B. opened the festival with an hour set each. The band lineup was great with Jazz Sea Jammers starting Friday off with
great music in the Atrium, and then carrying on in three other
venues with High Sierra, Devil Mountain, Bob Schulz Frisco
Jazz Band (with Chet Yeager sitting in for a few songs), Blue
Street; the local Fresno band, with Brady McKay and Sheri
Colby singing duets. What a treat! High energy bands like
Tom Rigney & Flambeau and the amazing Tom Hook and the
Terriers brought everyone to the dance floor. Not to be
overlooked were Ray Skjelbred and His Cubs, Uptown
Lowdown, Yosemite J.B. from neighboring Madera Co., Doug
Finke’s Hot Cookies and Midnight Rose. Everyone was talking
about the Youth bands like Dixie Dominus from Fremont
featuring their singer Rachel Sue and TNT, The New
Traditionalists from Sacramento with singer Joanna Koford,
and Reedley River Rats.
Saturday afternoon features the parasol parade. Everyone
that loves to parasol dance joins in and there were many

ABOUT WHOM
He sometimes walks among many folks,
He never smiles or even tells jokes.
Never even questions the word why,
but still enjoys the sunny skies.
I suppose he thinks very deep,
and I can say he loves to sleep.
He also checks what people bring,
because he thinks he is the king.
He knows he loves to give a show,
and rubs his nose on those he knows.
To plan and do what has to be,
yet always questions what he sees.
He cuddles up to Dixieland music,
and always seems so satisfied.
I don’t know if he has excuses,
but I can say he’s never shy.
We know in life he has a plan,
to never obey woman or man.
It’s now I’m glad you know the facts,
for I’m only talking about my cat.
