PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
BARBARA KINNEY
H
ow enjoyable it was, seeing all those young people on stage during the first
jam set last Sunday. Hats off to Jim O’Briant who drove from Gilroy to
Fremont Christian High School (Dixie Dominus) for a 7 a.m. rehearsal, also making
contacts at the Fresno Dixieland Festival. Jim Harget worked these players into
the set and Dick Williams managed that large group on stage. Dixie Dominus gave
us Rebekah Rodrigues, Clarinet and Caleb Caidang, Trumpet. John Soulis’s
Jazzinators gave us Zach Maher, Tuba and Aditya Sriram, Piano. We also had
Justin Lipper (a former Raisin Baby) Trombone, now at Cogswell Poly.
SBTJS is making every effort to keep our kind of music alive through these talented
and hard working young people. Let’s give them a warm welcome when they join
us another time.
Pat Dutrow’s Jazzmeisters gave us a great afternoon of music, and now we look
to March 23 for Devil Mountain to give us more!! MEMBERS WHO HAVEN’T
RENEWED FOR 2014, PLEASE DO........we want you back!!

THE SOUNDS OF
MARDI GRAS
T
he Fresno Dixieland Society celebrated their 30 years
of existence in grand style with a knockout festival.
Four venues provided over 30 hours of music and extra
events: Thursday night and a WindDown dinner Sunday
evening. With fourteen fine bands, two of the best youth bands
and many very colorful features, this was a first rate festival
that shouldn’t be missed. There was even a quality 34 page
program describing Mardi Gras, Dixieland, every band and
more.
Again local musician Clint Baker seemed to be everywhere.
He headed an All Stars group to open Thursday night with
four hot groups for an extra $15. and well worth it. The
recently revived Buck Creek J.B. from Virginia proved to
have all the skill that left fans mourning when they quit.
Toronto’s Climax J.B. and Grand Dominion from the
NorthWest again showed why they are brought back year
after year. Airline difficulties were responsible for giving
clarinetist Gerry Green from Grand Dominion a real workout;
he played in three of the four sets and well deserved the
plaudits he received through it all.
Bands we’ve been proud to feature as guest bands at monthly
sessions, Devil Mountain, High Sierra and Bob Schulz‘
Frisco J.B. were good to hear again. Dick Williams did lead
the the JazzSea Jammers, and they were truly jammers who
had played on JazzSea Cruises. Katie Cavera played banjo/
guitar with Ray Skjelbred’s Cubs and filled in as a very
strong bassist with Grand Dominion. The Fremont youth band
Dixie Dominus may have a different line-up than appeared
before us last year, but they put on great sets with talented
vocalists. The other youth band, Reedley River Rats,
benefits from the strong support to youth that Fresno musicians
provide and did fine sets, too.
Tom Rigney & Flambeau may seem an inappropriate choice
for a Dixieland festival, but those five musicians are good
ones and audience pleasers too. The broad range of music
they play has a great beat for dancers and adds spice to the
program. Fresno’s Blue Street J.B. leader told his audience
where they stood by announcing that his band’s play would
be practice sessions for getting new members ready for the
next festival they’d be playing in a couple of weeks. Their
best songs were when Doug Finke sat in for the blended
sounds of two trombones together with leader, Dave Ruffner.
Finke’s Hot Cookie’s was a foursome: Doug Finke,
trombone; Bob Schulz, cornet; Howard Miyata, tuba and Scott
Anthony, banjo who played like old friends gathering in
someone’s den to play for fun. It was low key and a lot of
chat. Yosemite J.B. was the local group from the Sierra
foothills around Yosemite that played a good traditional jazz
program.
This festival proved to be ideal for a clarinet fan. Grand
Dominion is always fun to hear with the unique vocals of
trombonist, Jim Armstrong. Clint Baker kept the front line
moving as leader on trumpet, but he often joined Gerry Green

so that two clarinets played great choruses together. The
rhythm section behind them really cooked making this the
band to be sure to listen to every day. Ray Skjelbred & His
Cubs had a clarinet surprise, too. The regular Kim Cusak
was ill so John Otto was brought from Chicago. He played
with Frisco J.B. too, but in this Cubs’ band he was the only
horn, and he was great. Friday and Saturday evenings the
Cubs’ last set was in the smallest meeting room with a smaller
audience. Leader Skjelbred on piano played to that intimate
feeling and voiced his admiration for the band as well. It was
the perfect way to end a day of wonderful music.
Music may have been the main focus, but the organizers never
let us forget that it was also Mardi Gras. Many fans had
multiple costume changes, and there was a parade through
all the concert rooms every day and a coronation of the year’s
chosen King and Queen with their own parade. The Saturday
Masquerade Costume Parade must have been 50 to 60 people
in all kinds of amazing dress, and masked, too. The bands on
stage cooperated by playing Bourbon Street Parade, beads
were tossed to the seated listeners and all appreciated the
effort that had been made. It should not be forgotten that this
festival is one with room for lots of dancers. The Fresno
Dixieland Society has done it again, and all fans are grateful
for it.
