G
olf is one of the biggest reasons why so many distinguished publications rank the Dominican Republic
among the world’s best travel destinations. With 25 courses and counting—more than any regional
competitor—the DR is the Caribbean’s undisputed golf capital.
Just a two-hour flight south of Miami, the beautiful DR boasts spectacular layouts designed by some of golf’s mostacclaimed course architects, among them Pete Dye, Tom Fazio, Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones Sr., P.B. Dye, Gary
Player and Nick Faldo. And for golfers who prefer to pack light, club rentals are available at every course.
Thanks to the DR’s golf course-friendly and visually stunning coastal terrain, layouts are popping up to lure golfers
thirsting for unique, challenging world-class layouts located in some of the world’s most spectacular settings. Ten new
golf courses have either opened in the DR since 2001 or plan to open by the end of 2010. These pages include
descriptions of every course you can play in the DR so you can begin planning your next—or first—visit now.
EAST COAST
Punta Cana | BÁVARO
LA Romana | Bayahibe
The DR’s East Coast, which receives most
of the nation’s visitors, has become the
new international “it” golf destination
thanks to more than $6.5 billion worth
of new mega-resort developments spread
over a combined 33,000 acres. The East
Coast will receive an additional boost
by the spectacular new championship
layouts, marinas, and upscale luxury
resorts and developments planned in
this region over the next 12 years. The
East Coast features over 40 miles of
continuous silvery-sand beaches, with
all-inclusives centered in the Playa Bávaro
and Punta Cana areas.

Cap Cana, which opened numerous
facilities in 2006, has quickly become
one of the Caribbean’s most luxurious resorts. Located just south of Punta
Cana, Cap Cana eventually plans to be
home to three Jack Nicklaus Signature
courses. The second of these courses,
Las Iguanas Golf Course, broke ground
in May 2006 and is scheduled to open
by early 2010. The course, which will
be managed by Troon Golf, features
undulating fairways and greens evoking
a linksy feel. Golfers also will encounter
unique bunkering and green complexes,
plus a blend of ocean, inland and
natural-wetland holes will provide a challenge amidst various types of landscape
and vegetation. Three of Las Iguanas’
back-nine holes—Nos. 12 through
14—play along the windswept coastline
and will give golfers plenty of photo opportunities, if not fits. The 13th and 14th
essentially are island holes connected
to the mainland by four bridges thanks
to a large adjacent lagoon connected
to the sea by two entrances. Lakes,
wetlands or ocean will be encountered
on 14 holes, while natural bluffs and
rock outcroppings wind through hole
Nos. 2, 8-10, 17 and 18. The Golden
Bear Lodge—the world’s first Nicklausdesigned luxury condominium village—
will be located between Las Iguanas and
Punta Espada, Cap Cana’s first Nicklaus
Signature course. Las Iguanas also will
boast a world-class practice facility, with
a 20,000-square-foot putting green and
huge chipping green.

Punta Espada Golf Course—Nicklaus’
first Signature Course in the DR—opened
to raves in September 2006. This magnificent 7,396-yard track, located
at the Cap Cana resort, continues to
open eyes. Punta Espada already is
No. 46 among Golf Digest’s 100 Best
Outside the U.S. 2009-2010 course
ranking and is second in the DR in the
magazine’s Planet Golf 2009-2010
ranking. Nicklaus’ gem has five sets of
tees and boasts ocean views from every
hole. The Golden Bear superbly utilizes
and incorporates the area’s bluffs,
beach, lagoons and jungle foliage into
the course’s design. Eight holes play
either alongside or over the Caribbean
Sea, including the stunning par-4 17th,
which requires a tee-shot carry over
a bay. The downhill 611-yard par-5
second hole also is unforgettable, beginning with a drive atop a limestone cliff
downhill to a peninsula green. A tidal
lagoon influences the third shot, and the
Caribbean serves as a stirring backdrop. Limestone ridges, brilliant white
sand, emerald fairways and blue sea
constantly provide a panorama
of colors. Punta Espada—which is
operated by Troon Golf—hosted a
Champions Tour event, The Cap Cana
Championship, in 2008 and 2009.

World Golf Hall of Fame course architect Pete Dye scored the hat trick with
Dye Fore, his third masterpiece at the
luxurious Casa de Campo Resort in La
Romana. The course is the nation’s thirdrated course in Golf Digest’s Planet Golf
2009-2010 ranking. The Caribbean Sea
serves as a backdrop to the unique Dye
4
Fore, which boasts seven cliff-side holes
dropping 300 feet to the Chavon River
below, the replica Mediterranean village
of Altos de Chavon, the Dominican
mountains (the Caribbean’s highest),
40-mph gusting winds and amazing
360-degree views. Dye’s windy,
expansive layout tips out at 7,770
yards, whose tees carry a hefty rating/
slope of 77.0/134, but Dye Fore also
features generous fairways, some as
wide as 200 feet. Dye Fore’s par-3 holes
are all superb, with Nos. 12 and 15
considered by many to be among the
world’s finest one-shot holes. The resort’s
newest addition is very playable for all

Club (opposite) require nerve and

skill levels and has immaculate playing
conditions thanks to paspalum-grass
fairways. Dye Fore’s more-traditional
front nine features huge, often-elevated
green complexes with steep fall-offs. The
more-dramatic inward nine is a treeless,
links-like routing skirting the edge of
a majestic gorge. The 18th hole is the
course’s fourth 600-yard par-5, but a
wide fairway brings birdie into play.
GoDominicanRepublic.com
Teeth of the Dog, Dye’s first Casa de
Campo creation in 1971, was the
course that initially put the DR on the
world’s golf stage. Nearly 40 years
later, Teeth of the Dog still consistently
ranks among the world’s best courses.
In fact, it’s No. 33 in Golf Digest’s 100
Best Outside the U.S. 2009-2010
ranking and is the DR’s top-rated course,
according to the publication’s Planet
Golf 2009-2010 ranking. This typical
Dye creation’s Dye-abolical obstacles
force even the best players to grind.
There are seven ocean-front holes—
four on the front nine and three on the
back—that play extra tough thanks
to the capricious trade winds. While the
course has stood the test of time, Dye
sharpened its teeth by lengthening some
holes, and upgrading greens and
bunkers, for a November 2005 re-opening, but clearly defined bailout areas
where there’s trouble also make Teeth
of the Dog player friendly for all golfers.
The course’s firm, raised greens are
heavily bunkered. The sea first comes
into play on the par-3 fifth hole, and the
225-yard seventh requires a tee-shot
carry over the ocean to a green
surrounded by sand. The course’s
finishing stretch is incredible. The
unforgettable 384-yard 15th curves
around sea cliffs; the sea runs along
the right side of the par-3 16th while
four bunkers wait along the left; the sea
parallels the long par-4 17th all the way
to a miniscule putting surface; and the
par-4, 484-yard final hole heads inward
toward the clubhouse.

The second Dye course at Casa de
Campo opened in 1975 and has drawn
comparisons to traditional British and
Scottish links courses thanks to firm
fairways and open putting surfaces that
invite golfers to play shots along the
ground. At first glance, The Links might
not seem nearly as intimidating as its
two seaside sister courses. However,
looks can be deceiving. The moderately
hilly course features several lagoons
and lakes that are popular with wading
birds. Tall, dense bahia- and guinea
jungle-grass rough and numerous
bunkers complete the scene. Most of
The Links’ holes dogleg either right or
left over the undulating landscape, and
there are five holes on which water provides an exceptional challenge to even
the lowest handicappers. Similar to
traditional links courses, awkward
stances are commomplace at The Links
because of its rumpled terrain, and the
course’s greens are the smallest, thus
the toughest to hit, among the resort’s
three courses. Dye also did a fabulous
job with the greenside bunkering at The
Links, even including a few of his trademark pot bunkers to bedevil golfers.

The par-72, 6,650-yard Catalonia
Caribe Golf Club is also part of the
Catalonia Bávaro Resort. Designed
by Sola and Jack Corrie, the well-maintained course features a large lake—
which impacts Nos. 5, 6 and 15—five
lagoons and numerous shade trees. In
fact, countless golfers have rinsed balls
at the fifth and sixth holes. The green
of the par-4, 297-yard fifth sits between
two lakes while the 117-yard sixth
features an island green. Catalonia
Caribe, designed for golfers of all skill
levels, has ample fairways and blends
seamlessly into the landscape. Nine

course also features a nice variation of
dogleg holes, and an interesting mix

Cocotal Golf and Country Club’s
three nine-hole courses—Hibiscus,
Bouganvillea and Benjamina—each
possess memorable routings designed
by Jose “Pepe” Gancedo. The six-time
Spanish champion utilizes the natural
terrain of an old coconut plantation
for all 27 holes, including serene lakes
and swaying palm trees, with Mother
Nature providing the unrelenting wind.
The imaginative Gancedo’s trademark
features at Cocotal include strategically
placed trees (including some lurking
in the middle of fairways), bunkers,
mounds and gently rolling terrain, with
generous fairways. Four sets of tees on
the Hibiscus and Bouganvillea nines
(three tees on Benjamina) provide lowhandicap golfers with a challenging
layout, while beginners and intermediate
players can continually improve and
have fun in the player-friendly environment. Cocotal is located close to the Sol

This imposing and challenging course,
designed by P.B. Dye, takes full advantage of its breathtaking site on a
cliff’s edge 400 feet above the winding
Chavon River and the beautiful ravine of
Tanama. Located on the DR’s southeast
coast in the La Estancia Golf Resort
residential community, La Estancia Golf
Course is a mighty 7,382 yards from the

back tees and its views, particularly on
the front nine, are nothing less than spectacular. The course also features grass
hollows, instead of bunkers, around its
greens. There also are wide fairways
to corral errant drives, since the course
hugs the ledges of the vast, spectacular
landscape. Dye moved vast amounts of
earth to create La Estancia, which tests
the short game with hard-to-hold greens,
several with steep dropoffs.

Punta Blanca—which was inaugurated
in style in May 2007 by course architect
Nick Price, twice the PGA TOUR Player
of the Year and three-time major-championship winner—is a significant piece of
the five-star Majestic Resort, which also
features a casino and spa. The fairly
open, 7,174-yard creation by Price,
his first in the Caribbean, is expected
to become one of the DR’s must-play
tracks. Price has seamlessly molded this
masterpiece—which features wetlands,
and large bunkers and lakes—into the
area’s dense vegetation.

This brand-new Tom Fazio creation, the
second ocean-front course at Puntacana
Resort & Club, features cliff-top holes
along the north shore of the resort’s luxury Corales enclave. Oscar de la Renta,
Julio Iglesias and Mikhail Baryshnikov
are among the celebrities who own
beachfront residences in the enclave.
Fazio’s breathtaking, distinctive design
already has established itself as one
of the DR’s must-see and play courses.
The Corales Golf Course, which boasts
six ocean-front holes, is set between
rocky cliffs, coral reefs and the Caribbean Sea. Golfers also will encounter
picturesque canyons, as well as multiple
lines of approach to each hole. Fazio
transformed the original flat-headlands
site into a must-play golf course with
rolling contours by moving 1.3 million
cubic meters of earth. Corales boasts
some very memorable seaside holes.
The par-5 seventh slightly doglegs right
to a green that juts into the Caribbean.
The entire length of the par-3 17th hugs
a cliff and the exhilarating challenge
culminates on the par-4 18th, which
winds around headlands and requires a
dramatic carry over the rocky, turquoise

the famous 18th hole at Pebble Beach.
This gem is the DR’s fifth-best course in
Golf Digest’s Planet Golf 2009-2010

beach; and the 239-yard 14th’s long,
multi-tiered putting surface is hidden by
tall dunes, reminiscent of an Irish links.

The Faldo Legacy Course—the first of four
Nick Faldo-designed courses slated to be
built at the Roco Ki Golf Club in the DR’s
Macao Beach area—opened in 2008
and already boasts a healthy portfolio
of rave reviews. The spectacular par-72,
7,073-yard Faldo Legacy uniquely includes stretches of holes that incorporate
all the native landscape. For instance, six
holes (Nos. 1-3 and 16-18) are situated
on high, windswept headland bluffs
above the sea; holes 4-6 and 13-15 wind
through lush mangroves; and holes 7-12
are built around four lakes/lagoons.
The panoramic view on the opening tee
includes the course, the headlands, the
ocean and the mountains beyond. On
the par-3 third hole golfers descend
from the bluffs into a tropical sanctuary where centuries-old mangroves line
the fairways. Upon ascending to the
15th hole and a return to the sea, it will
become clear why the short, downhill
8
par-3 17th hole has drawn comparisons
to Pebble Beach’s seventh hole. Faldo’s
design finishes on another dramatic
note, where shots on the 18th must be
played over two different ocean inlets to
an undulating green sitting atop a rocky,
wind-blown, wave-battered peninsula.
Landing areas at the Faldo Legacy
Course become narrower the farther
you drive the ball, which brings more
bunkers, waste areas and native grasses
into play for longer hitters. Customized
Sea Isle supreme paspalum grass covers
the entire course, which is managed by
Troon Golf.

round for high handicappers thanks to
four teeing areas. Gancedo’s philosophy when building the course was to
preserve the natural land area. This
gorgeous inland layout features lakes,
creeks and tropical vegetation that offer
a challenge and visual delight.

While the North Coast golf scene is limited to two courses designed by Robert
Trent Jones Sr., there’s no shortage of
this region’s romantic landscape, which
provides a spectacular backdrop for
Puerto Plata’s collection of all-inclusive
resorts thanks to nearly 100 miles of

Legendary golf-course architect Robert
Trent Jones Sr., designed the lovely
6,730-yard Playa Dorada Golf Club,
which opened in 1976. Jones’ lovely
par-72 creation is located in the popular
Playa Dorada Resort Complex in Puerto
Plata, situated among 14 hotels in the
lush Caribbean tropics, thus providing
easy accessibility, as well as numerous
accommodation and package options.
The relatively flat Playa Dorada Golf
Club is known for its outstanding conditioning and exceptional greens.
Playa Grande Golf Course, which
opened in 1997, is the last golf course
Trent Jones Sr., designed. Fittingly it’s
also considered among his best. In fact,
it is the No. 4 course in the DR, according to Golf Digest’s Planet Golf 20092010 ranking. Ten of the somewhat-hilly
layout’s holes play along the Atlantic
Ocean’s cliffs. Playa Grande often is
referred to as the “Pebble Beach of the
Caribbean.” The par-72, 7,090-yard
course is cut into the cliffs overlooking
the ocean, underground springs supply
abundant fresh water, the lush land has
numerous old trees and royal palms, and
the neighboring land consists of forests
and small farms.

Where to play in the DR
Santiago | Jarabacoa
Santiago, once the nation’s capital city,
dominates this region of the DR. While
golf is limited in the Central Region,
Santiago is definitely worth visiting not
only for the golf, but its long history.
The Pete Dye-designed Las Aromas,
Santiago Golf Club, also known as
the Santiago Golf Club, is a par-70,
6,210-yard gem set amidst scenic
tobacco fields on the southern fringes of
Santiago. It is the only golf course that
is actually situated in this city of one
million residents. The par-70 course,
which opened in 1980, is located in
an extremely hilly area with stunning
