Historic Adventist Village
Binder Park Zoo hosts more than 140 species of animals
on 433 acres of wetlands and natural forests. Walking
along the tree lined paths and viewing the authentic
settings, you might forget you are visiting a zoo!
The Historic Adventist Village shares the story of “A People
Who Lived to Honor God.” The Village is a fascinating
three-block experience that includes authentically restored
or replicated buildings featuring the heritage of the Seventhday Adventist Church. The Village is for all ages and is both
interactive and educational.
Binder Park Zoo • 7400 Division Drive, Battle Creek
(269) 979-1351 • www.binderparkzoo.org
In 2014, three orphaned Alaskan bear cubs started
exploring their new home at Binder Park Zoo. The two
brothers and their sister are fun to watch as they wrestle
each other and play “King of the Tree Stand”.
As visitors step into Wild Africa, the landscape imitates
a true African savanna. View the zebras, watch as the
monkeys ‘show off’, and then feed a giraffe! The 16 to 20
foot tall animals wander up to the fence to feed right out
of your hand! Don’t worry, they’re harmless. But their long,
black tongues are a little ticklish!
Not only does Binder Park Zoo have unique animal
exhibits, but it also hosts several events each year geared
toward both adults and families - like the 5k Cheetah
Chase and the Zoo Boo.

White had a vision predicting the Civil War three months before
the first shots were fired! In the remaining years of her life she
experienced over 2,000 visions and dreams of God while living
in Battle Creek. In the replicated 1857 Meeting House you will

Since the Emerald Ash Borer (an invasive insect from Asia)
arrived in Southeast Michigan in 2002, it has killed more
than 50 million Ash trees across North America. Nearly 7.5
billion Ash trees are still at risk. Around 100 years ago 44 Ash
trees were planted in a grove by the main entrance of Leila
Arboretum. By 2013, all of them were dead.

During the summers of 2015 and 2016, two dozen tree trunks
were transformed into works of art and Battle Creek’s Fantasy Forest was born. Some sculptures were created using
still-standing tree trunks, and others by using trunks placed on
concrete pads.
These sculptures will join other artworks located throughout
Leila’s 85 acres. The Leila Arboretum attracts thousands of

Battle Creek History
See our website for more information • www.BattleCreekVisitors.org
After October 22, 1844 there were many disappointed
Millerites, a religion that firmly believed that the second
coming of Jesus Christ would occur on that day. Many
people gave up their beliefs when the date passed with no
event, but others went back and studied the scriptures to find
out what went wrong.
A new church, the Seventh-day Adventists, was formed in
1863 in Battle Creek with the help of their prophet Ellen G.
White, her husband James, and Joseph Bates.
The Adventists believed that the
date Miller had decoded from
the Bible was correct, but that
it had been misinterpreted. The
year 1844 was not when Christ
would return to Earth, instead,
it was when he would enter the
tabernacle in Heaven and start
the judgment of both the living
and the dead.
Ellen
Whiteclaimed to have experienced over 2,000 visions
Ellen G.
White
and dreams of God while living in Battle Creek. She became
a prolific writer in an effort to preserve and spread her
message, producing more than 5,000 magazine articles and
50 books during her lifetime. “The Great Controversy” is her
most famous book. More can be learned about the early
Adventists and Ellen White at the Historic Adventist Village.
Higher education and healthy diets are at the core of the
Adventist faith, and they have built many hospitals, clinics,
schools, and colleges.
CEREAL HISTORY
In 1867, along with nine other men, John Preston Kellogg
signed the Articles of Incorporation for the Health Reform
Institute, which would later become the Battle Creek
Sanitorium (the “San”). The Institute was founded utilizing
the principles of the Adventist beliefs - avoidance of meat,
Dr. John Harvey
Kellogg and Will
Keith Kellogg
alcohol, and sugar, and embracing vegetables, grains and
exercise - helping people suffering from gastrointestinal
troubles back to good health.
In 1876, the San hired a new medical director,
John Preston’s son, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg. Dr. Kellogg and his brother, William Keith, were
working on developing new foods for the San when a
happy mistake occurred. They were called away from an
experimental wheat mixture, and when they returned it
had become dry and stale. Since they were working on
a tight budget, they decided to complete the process of
rolling out the sheets of dough. The dough turned into
flakes, and the brothers discovered that by adding milk
they had a tasty breakfast cereal that soon became a hit.
Several years later, W.K. Kellogg bought the rights to
the cereal and started his own company, producing and
marketing Kellogg’s Corn Flakes.
C.W. Post had been a patient at the San and was thankful
for the new heath he experienced after following the San
diet. Post was a born marketer, and soon started his own
business with products that he developed. Others jumped
onto the cereal bandwagon, too, and soon there were over
100 cereal companies in Battle Creek! Today only three
remain - Kellogg’s, Post, and the former Ralston.
UNDERGROUND RAILROAD HISTORY
The Underground Railroad was
established before the Civil War as a
way for slaves to escape to freedom.
Battle Creek was a main stop, due to
its central location and large amount
of anti-slavery beliefs.
Sojourner Truth was not active in
the Underground Railroad, but her
Sojourner Truth
message helped convince our nation
to free the slaves and give them new rights. Battle Creek
is proud to be the home of the Sojourner Truth and
Underground Railroad Monuments.

A unique park that is also an open
air museum whose focus is on
historic truss bridges that have
been moved to and restored within
the park. The park allows metal
truss bridges that have become
insufficient for their original location
to be preserved for their historic
and aesthetic value. The park
also features a historic stone arch
railroad overpass. Historic Bridge
Park is the first of its kind in the
entire United States. In addition to
providing the historic bridges for the
enjoyment of visitors, Historic Bridge
Park is a fully functional park, with
running water restroom facilities,
picnic and playground areas, and
paved trails for the enjoyment of
pedestrians and bicyclists.
Each bridge features a plaque
explaining its original location and
use. Restoration was carried out
with the goal of maintaining as much
of the the original bridge material as
possible, and exactly replicating any
parts that required replacement. For
example, during restoration, failed
rivets on the bridges were replaced
with rivets, not modern high strength
bolts. The bridges in Historic Bridge
Park represent some of the best
metal truss bridge restoration work
to be found in the country.

Golf Courses
Bedford Valley - BATTLE CREEK
Riverside - BATTLE CREEK
Host to the Club Car Michigan Senior Open, Bedford Valley is one of
Michigan’s most frequent Championship sites. The classic design is
known locally as “The Big Course” and has huge greens, large bunkers,
and fairways lined with mighty oaks. Golf Digest - 4.5 stars.
A challenging and fun track for all! Designed by W. Bruce Matthews and
Jerry Matthews and is always well manicured. There are 5 sets of tees
on each hole that allow for a great challenge and a lot of fun for all skill
levels. Known for it’s excellent greens and great location. A “must play”!
Binder Park - BATTLE CREEK
Springbrook - BATTLE CREEK
Binder Park features rolling hills, natural ponds and wildlife areas.
This well maintained course winds through tree-lined fairways
where you can see some of Binder Park Zoo. Rated by USA Today
as “The Best Value in Michigan”.
The picturesque Springbrook Golf Course is surrounded by
Nature. It’s topography rolls through majestic hardwoods,
along streams and around ponds. A great course for
beginners and children.

Alwyn Downs - MARSHALL
A course that is always in top shape. Designed by Robert Beard,
there are 4 sets of tees on each hole, which make this course
very enjoyable for all skill levels. “The Creek” has 5 par-threes,
and 5 par-fives that keep it exciting.
Established in 1933 and located in historic Marshall, Michigan,
right next to Brooks Field Airport. This is a well maintained
course that’s easy on the pocketbook, and the friendly staff will
keep you coming back.

Cedar Farms - BATTLE CREEK
The Medalist - MARSHALL
This course is short and is made up of mostly par 3s with a few
par 4s. A nice course for kids and beginners because there are
4 tees on every hole. Overall, I recommend Cedar Farms for
practicing your short game around the green.
This premier championship golf course is nestled on 275 acres of mature
hardwoods and pristine wetlands. With 5 sets of tees, this challenging &
picturesque golf course can be enjoyed by golfers of all abilities. Site of
several statewide championships and US Amateur qualifiers.

Tomac Woods - ALBION
A short course, good for practicing par 3s and par 4s.It’s an easy
course to play, not a lot of out of bounds and no water unless you
overshoot the ninth green by 20 yds.Playing at this course supports
the Veterans and keeps it open for future Veterans.
The front nine is more open with undulating greens, requiring a little
extra line evaluation. Stone fence rows, built when farmers cleared the
fields in the mid-19th century, divide and outline the course. Woods, a
meandering creek, and scenic wetlands present occasional challenges.

Marywood - BATTLE CREEK
Turtle Creek - UNION CITY
Founded in1926 and designed by gifted architect Maurice McCarthy.
Golfers face a variety of tests throughout the course, from dramatic
elevation changes, to pristine ponds, to forest-lined fairways. Recently
redesigned to add challenge to today’s technology.
A very enjoyable “Regulation Eighteen” course to play. Not overly
difficult but there are a few tough holes. Course is very well
maintained and features all the hallmarks of Michigan golf. Designed
by Rex Spoort, the golf course opened in 1965.

Traveling with Pets
Traveling with your pet can create
its own set of problems. What hotels
are pet friendly? Where can they get
some exercise?
Please refer to the charts in the
Lodging section (pages 26-28) to
see which hotels will accommodate
your pet. It is always advisable to call
ahead of time to find out the specific
pet policy of your hotel - some hotels
may say they are pet friendly, but
only for small dogs or certain breeds.
The Humane Society of South
Central Michigan has a free BARK
PARK for some unbridled play time.
The park features a large fenced-in
area, a cooling pool, and walking
trails. See www.hs-scm.org/dogpark
for rules and more information.
The ALBION DOG PARK is also
ready for some off-leash play time.
It’s open from dawn to dusk every
day, at the corner of Bidwell and
Division Streets.
Most other Calhoun County parks
and trails are open to leashed dogs,
as long as you follow park/trail rules
and clean up after your canine friend.
