Directory! This directory is one of many fundraising initiatives conducted by the
Boxford Elementary Schools Trust (B.E.S.T.) in order to raise money for our local
schools. All of the money raised through our efforts goes directly toward improving
curriculum and technology in our elementary schools. The advertisers listed in this

Tyler and Diana Merriam as our leaders
for the past two years. Their actions
certainly have inspired our organization
to dream more and do more so that the
children of Boxford can learn more!
They launched the Touched by
Best Co-Presidents
Technology campaign in 2006 with the
Diana Merriam (left) and Kathy Tyler
spark of an idea: to give our elementary
school teachers laptop computers and to
provide classrooms with Smart Board™ technology. This ambitious undertaking
has redefined the mission of B.E.S.T., and inspired many to contribute to the
decade-old organization.
Throughout their tenure, Kathy and Diana have sought to reach out to various
community members, including the school board, administrators, teachers,
parents and the PTO. Under their leadership, B.E.S.T. has raised over $160,000
in the past 14 months. This success can be attributed to their leadership, hours of
relentless hard work, team building capabilities and project management skills.
Thank you Kathy and Diana for your years of dedicated leadership!!! Your dayto-day involvement will be sorely missed but your Touched by Technology legacy
will remain in Boxford’s heart for many years to come.

ABOUT B.E.S.T.
F
ounded in 1996, the Boxford Elementary Schools Trust (B.E.S.T.) is an all-volunteer,
non-profit, 501C(3), educational foundation dedicated to fostering excellence in
our public schools by raising funds to support innovative teaching. We focus our efforts
in three principle areas:
Technology – Fully-integrating our public schools with effective teaching technology
and providing teachers with curriculum enrichment tools so that all students can benefit
from today’s technology advancements for learning.
Professional Development – Supporting teachers’ academic interests,
broadening the scope of their skills and encouraging collegial collaboration.
Educator In-Residence – Professional Artists, Scientists, Mathematicians and
Historians who can visit our schools and enrich our children’s learning experience with
their unique perspectives and skills. Having contributed over $300,000 to Boxford’s public schools since the foundation’s
inception, B.E.S.T. is committed to addressing the very real challenge of maintaining
excellence at the Harry Lee Cole and Spofford Pond elementary schools in the face
of changing financial climates. There is a critical need for public schools to have
funds over and above what is provided through taxes. Additional funding can help
to make the difference between an average educational experience and one that
is more meaningful.

What is B.E.S.T.?
B.E.S.T. (Boxford Elementary Schools Trust) is a Local Education Foundation that raises money
for curriculum enhancing programs at Cole and Spofford Pond Schools. Our volunteers work all
year to fill the Grant Fund coffers with money. These funds are then “granted” to teachers and
administrators who initiate innovative, curriculum enrichment programs.

How does the B.E.S.T. grant process work?
The B.E.S.T. Grant Committee is made up of six members – a committee chair person, two
teachers (one from Cole and one from Spofford), two parent representatives for each school
and an outside educator. Teachers and administrators submit grant applications that provide
committee members with in-depth detail about how the grant will enrich curriculum in our
elementary schools. The committee reviews the grants to insure they comply with B.E.S.T.’s
mission and goals. Information is compiled and further research is done if necessary.

What is the Harriet E. Ernst Endowment Fund?
In 1997, B.E.S.T. established an endowment fund in memory of Harriet E. Ernst, a beloved
Boxford elementary school teacher who passed away in 1995. The Fund was established to
provide a permanent source of funding for innovative grant programs at Cole and Spofford
Schools. The balance of the endowment fund currently stands at over $40,000. Annually, the
Fund endows one grant in our elementary schools. Our goal is to create a lasting legacy by
continuing to grow the Fund.
Do other towns have educational foundations like B.E.S.T.?
Yes. In fact, schools systems with a record of academic excellence including Wellesley,
Lexington, Newton and Winchester all share one common thread – a well-supported
educational foundation!
