The recognition comes in addition to other awards presented to the school this year. In December, BBCHS posted a record 55 Illinois State Scholars: students who rank in the top 10% of all students in Illinois based on ACT score and academic rigor. Recently, the school was also awarded the 2016 Daily Journal Progress Award for Excellence in Education, an honor reserved for schools that demonstrate initiative and commitment to the community. BBCHS continues to strive for excellence in education. By increasing the number of AP courses available to students and eliminating lower-level classes, the school is ensuring that all learners achieve at high levels. “We want to constantly be progressing,” said BBCHS Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Tiffany Kohl. “We need to model lifelong learning for our students by continuing to challenge ourselves and innovate. We aren’t done yet. Recognition affirms us and drives us, but we are by no means finished. We will continue to make changes that are in the best interest of teaching and learning.” For more information about the rankings and requirements, visit the U.S. News & World Report website. Four Boilers ran for office and two for committee chair roles, while 37 delegates worked to get their bills passed through legislation. Liz Rosene ran for Governor; Ryan Guerin, for Lieutenant Governor; Nathan Pranger, for Secretary of State; Jarrod Knapper for Executive Director of the Lobbyists and Yash Mehta and Adam Schroeder, for committee chairs. “While none of our students won their respective position, all who attended gave their best effort and ran a good campaign,” noted staff sponsor Rachael Dovgin. After supporting their bills in two pre- legislative conferences, BBCHS delegates got four of their proposed five bills passed through legislation. Some of their legislation included laws to restrict the use of electronic devices by Illinois drivers, reduce the price of museums for Illinois residents, and control Asian Carp in Illinois waters. Three attorney teams, all of whom ranked in the top two courts, also represented BBCHS at the March event. One team, Nadia Youssef and Blake Bradley, took 2nd place in their oral argument, an impressive feat in this statewide challenge. “All of our attorneys prepared very well and put in a lot of effort writing their bench memos and prepping for arguments.” The annual Youth and Government trip provides students a realistic government experience and empowers them to give voice to their solutions. As she guided her hero through a series of questions, Fightmaster demonstrated effective interviewing techniques. The modeling exercise precedes students’ interviews of a hero in their own lives. Once they’ve conducted the interview, students will deliver a speech to the class focusing on the information they obtained from their interview. The assignment strengthens students’ communication skills in interviewing and public speaking.
