School Spirit Soars this Fall
hat makes BBCHS great? With exceptional academic programming and extra-curricular and
athletic successes, it’s easy to attribute the
greatness of our school to individual or group
achievements. But this fall, it was the outstanding
display of community that showcased how Boiler
Nation is built on more than points on a scoreboard,
it’s built on school spirit, on the coming together of
students, staff and the entire community of Bradley
and Bourbonnais to believe in one another. Through
packed stands and sold-out shows, the outpouring
of community support motivated students to reach
their full potential and reminded us why BBCHS is
truly unique.

Footloose Wows on Stage
Last year, BBCHS impressed audiences
with their stunning performance of Annie. This year, they’ve done it again with
their widely- acclaimed production of
Footloose. More than 3,000 people
watched as talented BBCHS students
brought the popular 80s musical to life,
a number that thrills director David
Morgan.
“With my first musical I wanted to engage the community, with my second
musical I wanted to pick a show that
really got the students excited,” he noted. “And boy did it work! We had over
160 students audition, and there were
lines to buy tickets during the lunch
hours…We are blessed that our program
has exploded the way it has in just two
short years. Talented students, committed parents, and a staff that works tirelessly has built something special that I
am really proud of. ”
Enthusiasm for the show was attributable, in part, to the number of students
involved. With a cast of 80 students, 12
tech crew members, 15 set painters and a
12 person orchestra, the production engaged many members of the BBCHS
student body. Of the 80 cast members,
48 of them are new to the BBCHS stage,
ensuring talent for years to come. “It
was so rewarding to work with students
who were new to the BBCHS stage, like
Jace Pettet (Ren) and Andrew McBurnie
(Chuck), as well as returners Allie
Schweigert (Ariel), Maddi Denault
(Rusty), and Griffin Keber (Willard),”
Morgan said.
Though there were many
memorable moments during
this year’s production, perhaps the most compelling
occurred during the performance on Friday, November
13th when coach Mike Kohl
brought the IHSA State Semifinalist Football Team to the
show. Prior to the opening
curtain, the cast and audience
sang the BBCHS Loyalty song,
and during the curtain call,
the football team was on their
feet dancing with the cast.
While the football team was
performing on the field on
Saturday, November 14, the
cast of Footloose eagerly showed their
support for the athletes. Cast member
Austin Wray snuck the final score into
the show so the audience would know
BBCHS had won the big game! “That
kind of connectedness between the
athletic department and the theatre
department is so rare and a testament
to the great students and the community climate at BBCHS. It was a special moment,” Morgan said.
With the success of Footloose and
Annie under his belt, Morgan is already planning for next year’s big
show: Beauty and the Beast. To further build the theater program, he is
running a BBCHS Summer Youth
Theatre Experience at the high school
where students ages 8 to 17 will
learn about all aspects of the theatre arts while they prepare to
perform a full production of
Seussical Jr. All proceeds from
the camp will go to fund the
BBCHS Theatre Program and

Student Learning Update
BBCHS Posts Record Number of State Scholars
In November, BBCHS set a new
school record for the number of
students earning Illinois State
Scholar status. This year, 54 exceptional students rank in the top 10%
of all students in Illinois based on
ACT score and academic rigor. This
exceeds last year’s record of 52. The
scholars and their parents will be
honored in a special event prior to
the BBCHS Boy’s basketball game
on February 23rd. In addition, all
Illinois State Scholars will be honored by the Iroquois Kankakee Regional Office of Education at a dinner in the spring. Congratulations

Ironclad Gains Support from Local Organizations
At the November BBCHS Academic Foundation Dinner, the
BBCHS Robotics Team thanked
Precision Piping, e2i, the Board of
Education and the Academic
Foundation for their generous
support of the newly-formed
team. The team continues to develop through on-site learning

Boilers Give Back:
2015 National Honor Society Food Drive
The 2015 BBCHS NHS Food Drive was a shining
example of the entire student body’s eagerness
to give back to the community. This year’s drive
yielded approximately 2,800 items to donate to
the Salvation Army’s efforts to assist local people in need.

North Street entrance of
