LAPPER 2012,Camryn’s Story
C
amryn, age 7, was diagnosed earlier this year with a
rare form of brain and spinal cord cancer called
primitive neuroectodermal (PNET). She is currently
in treatment, regularly travelling to Riley Children’s Hospital
in Indianapolis, and her spirits remain high with the support
of her parents and her sister Eliza. Her supporters came out
in droves for this year’s Lapper on May 19. Dozens of
family and friends donned purple shirts to show their
support for Camryn, and “Camryn’s Crew” was the biggest
team of the day.
“It was wonderful to be with all of our family and friends
at this event,” says Maggie, Camryn’s mom. “Camryn doesn’t
like to be the center of attention, but she enjoyed spending
time with everyone.”
With the help of Camryn’s Crew and the 54 other teams
that participated in Lapper 2012, we raised over $65,000 for
people with cancer and their families in our community.
The energetic crowd included many friends of our
organization, such as clients, neighbors, sponsors, board
members, staff, and dedicated volunteers. It was especially
touching to see clients of Cancer Services with their
entourage walking side by side.
Before the Lapper, everyone assembled to hear the
inspiring words of Lapper founder, Jill Burnett. It was a
special moment as we recognized the 10th anniversary of
this growing event. With those words at heart, the vast
crowd took its first steps and formed an impressive sight as
we marched through Brotherhood Place Office Park, a new
location for this year's walk that allowed us to showcase
our building. Following the Lapper, people gathered at the
party tent for Survivors Day and facility tours. Guests
cooled off with frozen treats from Edy’s and refueled
with food from Chick-fil-A and Jamison Meats. Music,
chair massages, bounce houses, face painting, cheerful
clowns, balloon animals, and more all rounded out the
festivities. What a party!
The money raised at Lapper 2012 will impact your
neighbors, your family and your community. Proceeds
from the event will benefit programs supporting
individuals in our community who are affected by cancer.
Stretching our limits during the Lapper and
celebrating life at Survivors Day are positive ways to
support people on the cancer journey and honor the lives
of loved ones. We’re grateful to all who were part of this
experience and hope to walk alongside you again next
year. Here’s to a healthful and healing year ahead. Let’s
start training for 2013!

This year’s speaker, Scott Burton, is an
author, comedian, world-class juggler, and
cancer survivor. With his unique take on
adversity, he speaks with an inspiring and
laughter-filled keynote that calls for humanity
and passion throughout the cancer battle.

In March, our building
was bustling with certified
massage therapists receiving
training for our Caring Touch
Massage program. The Caring
Touch program, launched in
2010, provides complimentary
massages to our clients and
primary caregivers and is
powered by certified massage
therapist with special training
who volunteer their time with
us. Since we launched the
program, we have watched our
clients and massage therapists
bond over the experience and
the healing power of touch.

Why does Cancer
Services have a board
and what does it do?
Cancer Services is a nonprofit
corporation, which means that it is a
legal entity distinct from the individuals
who founded it and work here. A
nonprofit corporation is governed by a
board of directors, which has legal and
ethical responsibilities that cannot be
delegated. It exists primarily to fulfill a
public need, to provide direct service, to
call attention to a social issue or to
enhance community life and culture.
Here at Cancer Services, our board
members are responsible for ensuring
that all legal and fiduciary requirements
are met. They safeguard the public’s trust
and protect the organization’s assets.
They also oversee management to
ensure that the organization is well-run
and work to secure the financial
resources necessary to serve the mission.
Good decision-making happens when a
wide range of perspectives and
experiences are taken into consideration
and board members serve an important
role in that while at the same time
keeping the nonprofit’s best interest in
mind (BoardSource 2008).
So the next time you see a CSNI
board member, or a board member for
any local nonprofit, thank them! It is a
challenging job and no one does it
without first being committed to the
organization’s mission.

A look back at 2011
This is an image that instills comfort. Someone we trust walking closely
with us. And it is side by side that best describes what we at CSNI do as
partners both with the health care community and with families and
caregivers touched by cancer. Here’s a snapshot view of CSNI as a valuable
community resource center and the only agency providing comprehensive
survivorship services in the 11 counties of northeast Indiana.
Cancer Services has made a commitment to walk side by side with
all those touched by cancer by providing an array of programs and
services. Our vision is to create a community response that produces a
sense of empowerment, strength and hope for our personal journeys.
We encourage you to tell others about Cancer Services and invite them

Fran Good, owner of Mattress Warehouse, has sponsored a fundraising
campaign every December for the past 6 years to benefit our organization. Several
years ago, Fran’s best friend Terry was diagnosed with cancer and came to our
organization for assistance. We answered his questions and provided him with the
supplies he needed to make his cancer journey a little easier. Because of the impact
we had on Terry’s life, Fran has decided to give back as much as she can and does
so through the annual fundraising campaign. Terry passed away a few years ago,
and Fran says she wants to do something to keep his memory alive. A portion of
mattress sales during the month of December were donated to us.
“People tell me they come in during December to buy a new mattress
specifically because we donate to Cancer Services. You’ve touched a lot of people,”
Fran says. “You help without asking questions and give people the support they
need. That’s a big deal and I will never forget how much you helped Terry and me.”
We are so thankful for Mattress Warehouse’s ongoing support and for our
friendship with Fran and her staff.

place to restore the mind, body and spirit—a Healing
Garden. We are very excited to bring you this relaxing
garden. We anticipate participants in re-Energize and Tai
Chi to be early users of this space.
