Naturalist Nights at White Pine ~ Winter 2013 Schedule ~ Weekly naturalist training & fun for adults! Naturalist Nights will deepen your understanding of and connection to nature. Many adults are interested in our work, but only see us when dropping the kids off or they don’t have the time to commit to our intensive programs and expeditions. (I) Learn to identify & better understand New England’s diverse array of small mammal species. Involves the safe handling of dead animal specimens (medical gloves provided). Jan 15 Wildlife Tracking Quiz Night! (I) Get sharp! Tea & snacks, tracks on the LCD projector -sound good? Wildlife track quizzes in a fun atmosphere. A must it if you’re taking the Winter Track & Sign Eval! Jan 22 The Last Track: Skull Identification (I) The ultimate find is a skull in the wild. Observe, measure, ID, & interpret specimens in our extensive collection. Animal age, sex, history, predator or prey? Come find out! Jan 29 Urban Howls: Dr. Jonathan Way on New England Coyotes A Naturalist Night special event Sponsored by Maine Community Foundation Coyote expert Dr. Jonathan Way offers a fresh view of our largest wild canid. *Meet at Portsmouth Public Library, 175 Parrot Ave, Portsmouth NH Feb 5 The Winter Sky: Stars, Planets, Constellations (O) Taking advantage of a new moon, head into the field to decode the natural mysteries above us. Dress warm & bring a hot thermos –this might be a cold one! Feb 12 Cape Neddick Bobcats (O) Arguably our most charismatic & elusive local predator. Learn about this wild cat’s habits then explore some local haunts in search of their tracks & sign. Feb 19 The Subnivean World (I/O) Shrews, ermines, voles, mice, & much more. Come explore the ecology of the wild & dramatic world that exists beneath the snow all winter long! Feb 26 Fur & Hair Identification (I) Ever find a patch of fur in the forest? Many clues for solving these mysteries are at our fingertips. We’ll unlock some of them tonight! Mar 5 Bird Feathers: Form & Function (I) Every feather found afield has a story to be told. We’ll look at shape, size, texture, & color, learning to see feathers in a new light. Mar 12 Winter Porcupine Hike (O) Porcupines are a fascinating mammal to study in winter. Follow their tracks & trails, find fresh dens, feeding signs, perhaps you’ll even catch sight of Ol’ Spiny! Mar 19 Woodcock Stalk (O) w/ Great Works Regional Land Trust & Gateway to Maine: Outside There’s nothing like this. Come observe the most unique harbinger of Spring.
