Live well in the moment
arts and entertainment
The heart of every community is found within its artistic expression, and the preservation and
celebration of historical artifacts and events. Find the pulse of Indiana’s Kosciusko County
through entertaining live theater, educational and historical museums, and awe-inspiring
shows. Each venue welcomes visitors into the rhythm of this friendly community.
THEATRES and HISTORY

a Madrigal Dinner in December, and the
musical drama Christ’s Passion at Easter.

intimate theater-in-the-round hosts topname entertainers, theatrical productions
and special guests.
Warsaw Performing Arts Center–

Warsaw. The PAC holds a variety of
performances throughout the year.

baseball evangelist,” was a phenomenon
of his day.
Etna Green Museum, Etna Green.

Green at this museum in Heritage Park.

Inc., Mentone. A guided tour and three
helicopters show early aviation history.

Historical Society, Warsaw. See
historical displays pertaining to the
history of Kosciusko County, plus a gift

Pound Store Museum, Leesburg.
Opened for the first time in 1838 as
an Indian trading post, it is the county’s
oldest commercial building.
Syracuse-Wawasee Historical
Museum, Inc., Syracuse. This museum
is small but people pleasing, with the lake
being the main attraction.
The Prudencio/Hamrick Hallmark
Ornament Museum, Warsaw. This is
the only complete collection of Hallmark
Ornaments on public display.
There is something so
captivating and unique
about experiencing a
live theatre performance
“in the round.” One can
imagine how audiences
must have felt in London’s
Globe Theatre during
Shakespeare’s time. I had
the same feeling as I sat in
Warsaw’s award-winning Wagon Wheel Theatre
where I was invited to a performance of The
Sound of Music.
Having experienced theatre in a variety of
spaces—from Broadway houses to church
basements—I was immediately impressed with
the Wagon Wheel. The excited crowd mingled
in the lobby prior to the show as they waited
to be seated. I love that “buzz” of energy one
feels from a group of theatregoers as they
share their anticipation and step away—even
for a moment—from their daily lives. While
scoping the lobby, I turned to notice a glass case,
which held mementos and programs from past
performances. It amazed me to think that the
Wagon Wheel Theatre is one of Indiana’s oldest
theatres.
Being seated, I immediately felt the intimacy of
the space. All seats wrapped around the center
stage with no curtain to separate the audience.
Not a bad seat in the house, I thought. The
house lights dimmed, the theatre went dark,
and the space fell silent. I could still feel the
energy from this appreciative crowd. Once lead
actress Lauren Roesner, a Wagon Wheel Theatre
veteran, burst into song, I knew I was in for a
treat. Her Broadway-caliber voice set the tone
for the rest of the show.
I was delighted to watch cast members greet
the audience as they filed through the lobby
at the show’s end. That is what theatre is all
about—that bond, that connection, that sense
of community and renewed spirit. It is why the
Wagon Wheel Theatre emerged from a simple
tent theatre in 1956. It is the reason why this
theatre has seen over 400 productions during its
history. And it the reason why I will return.

Attending the art
fair in Winona was, for
me, like stepping into an
American painting. The
warm summer breeze blew
past the canal dividing
the Village at Winona
and the Island. I strolled down the idyllic street,
sampling foods and chatting with friends and
acquaintances. My sandaled feet felt the damp
grass as I browsed the beautiful items on display
on a tented lawn in front of the neatly-painted
shops. I flipped through prints, touched the
smooth glass objects and admired the one-of-akind stone jewelry.
The weather had been less than perfect the night
before. Rain had fallen, and from the looks of it,
hadn’t yet totally left the area. The flap of a tent
near me immediately flipped up, and I grabbed
it. The temporary display walls swayed a bit.
Another gust of wind hit, and those of us in the
vicinity rallied to rescue the contents from the
gale. Once secured, we began an impromptu
Q&A with the artist who owned the tent. It was a
fascinating and intimate glimpse of the artist and
his artistry.
The retailer Pottery Bayou offered a porch
sale during the fair. I picked up a fused glass
spoon rest for my sister’s cabin in Minnesota. I
wandered inside and watched people creating
unique masterpieces to take home or give as gifts.
I listened to live music at the pavilion in the
middle of the Village, then shopped the new
creations at Mudlove, the mission-conscious
pottery shop. I love their bracelets, and chose
some to take to my nephews on my next visit.
I watched two children who were needle felting
on the front porch of The Island Weaver shop.
And after much pleading from them, I even
added my own little fluffy cloud to the large cloth
“painting.”
As the afternoon drew to an end, the sun finally
broke through the gray clouds, adding brilliance
to all the colors around me. I left the Village with
my purchases, looking forward to the many other
summer festivals in my county.

6 | livewellinthemoment.com
The cool evening rippled
around us as we walked. A
curious collection of well-dressed
and wildly-costumed music lovers
were gathering at Rodeheaver
Auditorium, as happy chatter and
orchestral tuning spilled out into
the night. Darth Maul handed us
programs with a big grin.
A few light-saber duels were
still in progress as we took our seats and the emcee
welcomed us to “Movie Night” at the Symphony of the
Lakes.
My young daughter, kitty ears askew, kneeled on the
seat beside me, trying to see the stage. I quietly pointed
out people I knew: “There’s Paul Hostetter, in the back,
warming up his trombone, see him? There’s Dan, on the
cello, near the front. Can you see Chara Sonntag over
there behind the piano? Remember meeting the harpist
at the Christmas concert?” It’s more interesting when
you know the people involved, and when those people
are your friends and neighbors, it’s even more so.
The baton rose. Silence fell. My daughter’s eyes grew
wide as the opening blast of Star Wars thundered down
from the stage. It washed over her like a revelation. This
is the flood “surround sound” tries to imitate, but never
quite succeeds.
Smiling at the intense listening going on beside me, I
leaned over and nuzzled her ear. “What kind of music
do you think this is? What kind of story are they
telling?”
“It’s . . . a very big story. Faraway places,” she whispered,
eyes still wide. She remained transfixed as the program
segued into Darth Vader’s Imperial March theme.
“Something bad is coming. But you’re sort of amazed by
it anyway.”
Not bad for a seven-year-old who’s never seen the movies.
Indiana Jones came next.
“Daddy! This is like, adventure music! Chases, and
dragons, and battles!” I tried to remember if there had
been any dragons, but just nodded that she was, indeed,
getting it right. Her grin got even bigger.
The narratives were grand, funny, romantic, mysterious.
The violins swooned, the trumpets flared, the french
horns called from afar. The kitty ears on my daughter’s
headband were mostly forgotten as her own ears drank
in the sound.
As we walked home, my daughter chattered about the
music she’d heard, which ones she’d really liked, and
which ones she was going to draw pictures of the minute
we got home. I just smiled into the October night.
A two-block walk from home. All free. And priceless.

life-size, bronze sculptures by
world-renowned American
Sculptor Seward Johnson in a free

early artistic efforts focused on
painting, after which he turned to
sculpture in 1968.
Many of his life-size bronze
painted figures portray people
engaged in everyday activities,
reflecting his sense of humor
and affection for people. More
than 250 of his figures have been
featured in private collections
and museums, as well as periodic
public placements around the
world. Learn more about this
talented artist on the Seward

shopping
Discover hand-crafted treasures, artisan enriched boutiques, and gourmet specialties to
tantalize every self-made chef. Find that one elusive item that expresses your individuality
in fashion, home décor, and gift-giving. The unique specialty shops of Indiana’s Kosciusko
County make every simple shopping trip an eventful memory-making treasure hunt.
ART and EARTH TRAIL
The Northern Indiana Art & Earth Trail
is a guided journey of discovery that
will take visitors to all kinds of new and
surprising places. There’s rich and diverse
heritage in Northern Indiana, much of
which is rooted deeply in the arts and
earth.
Throughout Indiana’s Kosciusko County,
talented artists talk about their creations
in refurbished homes that have been
turned into shops and working studios.
Annual summer music festivals invite
visitors back to the lake shores. Antique
and art lovers have a special place in the
quaint town of Pierceton.
Be sure to follow signs that invite you to
buy home-grown produce and tempting
home-baked goods from the region.
We’ve detailed seven driving loops, from
Lake Michigan and the Indiana Dunes to
areas known for sparkling inland lakes,
past the Golden Dome of Notre Dame
and onto roads where horse-drawn
Amish buggies seem to outnumber cars.
For each trail, a map shows the location
and category of the stops. We start each
loop at the county’s Convention and
Visitors Bureau. However, you can pick
up the trail at any point and go in any
direction you please.
Stop by the
Kosciusko County
Visitor Center to
pick up a guide to
the Art & Earth
Trail, with maps
for each of the
seven loops.

The Warsaw Cut Glass
Company is a must for this
Chicago gal’s every visit to
K-County. I find beauty, history and pure artistry in this
hundred-year-old spot.
Walking into the Warsaw Cut
Glass Company is like stepping back in time: aged
plank floors, table after table of beautiful glass pieces
sparkling in the natural light through the tall windows.
On my first trip all I could take in was the beautiful
glass – so many items in various shapes and sizes. And
then there are the patterns! Any piece, any size, any
shape is the canvas for a beautiful pattern. The options
overwhelmed me, and I went home with a trifle bowl
in the willow pattern.
My next visit introduced me to Linda Kirkendall.
Linda and her husband, Randy, now own Warsaw
Glass. Linda is the face of the shop; she knows the
history and has a passion for the artistry of cut glass.
Randy is the artist; he spent years studying with the
previous owner, who began his apprenticeship in 1914.
Linda easily chats about the individual patterns, their
complexity and the process of various wheels and bits
to create the different designs. Somehow my mom’s
decades of employment at Marshall Field’s came
up, and that’s when I learned that the Warsaw Glass
Company owns the oak pattern. It was developed
exclusively for the Walnut Room at Marshall Field’s on
State Street. It is no longer an exclusive pattern, so that
day I brought home a pitcher and ordered a small vase
in the oak pattern for my mom.
A third visit to the shop was required, in order
to introduce my mom to this craft from the past.
We made arrangements for Randy to provide
a demonstration. We entered the workroom to
unexpected sights and sounds: rhythmic bands rotating
pulleys and grinding stones; water dripping and
keeping the stones wet; and Randy at the helm. Randy
chose a simple design to demonstrate that day – a
design that only required a single bit. He began with
a plain water glass, added a few dots with a Sharpie to
anchor his design, and then he began freeform etching
and rotating the glass. To watch Randy work is to
gain a huge respect for the skill, patience and artistry
required to produce each piece.

While shopping at the local antique shops, I often
overhear parents and grandparents reminiscing with their little
ones. Once a grandmother picked up a record and told her
grandchild she used to listen to one. Dumbfounded, the child
asked what she was talking about. The grandmother patiently
explained it was used to play music and then pointed to a
Victrola. She showed the child how it cranked and how it played
the record. Another time, a father picked up an Old Spice shaving mug, explaining to
his son what it was used for. He explained that his father used to mix shaving soap with
water in the cup, resulting in shaving cream. He told his son that he sat on a chair and
watched his father shave every morning.
I, too, find myself reminiscing while antique shopping. As I stroll down the aisles, I see
items that my family members owned. I remember my grandmother using Blue Willow
dishes and grandpa showing me his pocket knives. I also remember my parents making
ice cream with an ice cream maker. I find myself drawn to antiques for the memories of
the past. Every purchase carries a memorable thought or event in my life.
It is important that we preserve the past and share the “Good Ole Days” with our
children. Antique shopping is the perfect way to share. The shops are salvage yards
for the past and provide treasures for generations to come. Our local shops carry
everything from games, toys, furniture, and more. Antique items were built to last and
can be enjoyed by the young and old. Please take the time to support our local antique
shops and pass on a piece of history to a family member.

dining
Food Trucks: historically this meant
prepackaged sandwiches and bags of chips
(often out of date!), located next to a
construction site. Today it means something
completely different: fresh food, organic
ingredients, homemade bread, tortillas and
wraps, and made-to-order goodness from
homegrown chefs.
An urban approach to “fast food” has rolled onto the streets of Indiana’s Kosciusko County,
offering tantalizing delights for every discriminating palate. Made-to-order, fresh food makes
food trucks appealing to locals and visitors alike for interesting taste, healthy choices and variety.
You may not have noticed, but Warsaw is now home to multiple
food truck options. While in larger cities the phenomenon includes
the element of surprise (where will the food truck show up today?),
Warsaw has seen these new establishments stay in semi-permanent
locations. It’s easy to find these outdoor options for dining; and small
“communities” of loyal patrons flock to these locales on a daily basis.
FOOD TRUCKS
Big Boss BBQ, 500 South Buffalo St,
Warsaw. Whatever the occasion, we
have a hog and a cooker, will travel!
We set the BAR in Bar-be-que! We can
also be found in the Marsh parking lot,
Warsaw, on a various Saturdays during
lunch time.
Curbside, 212 W Jefferson St, Warsaw.
A unique food trailer specializing in
flatbreads. Each week we will feature
a flatbread special. the menu will
have new items added to it based on
what is in season. We are normally
open Spring–Fall, Tuesday–Saturday
11:30am–2pm.
SIlver Tongue, 307 W Market St,
Warsaw. Try the chicken mango
taco, the falafel, the Silver Tongue
burger (made between two grilled
cheese sandwiches), or try a new
item! Spring–Fall, Wednesday–Friday,
11am–3pm. We do events! Find our
truck by checking www.facebook.com/
TheSilverTonguemobilefoodtruck.
From the taco truck on Detroit Street to the seasonal hot dog stand
on Highway 30, you can find a location nearby.
One of my favorites is Curbside, located by the old train depot
in Warsaw. They are providing gourmet food to the downtown
on a daily basis. Gabe and Kammi Rager, local Warsaw residents,
bring flair to flatbread grilled sandwiches with unique fillings and
ingredients. The choices include steak, sausage and vegetarian,
with lots of options for toppings. Each one is cooked to order on a
charcoal grill, and served on house-made flatbreads (similar to a very
thick tortilla or a skinny pita). My favorite is the Italian Sausage!
Homemade grilled sausage, marinara sauce, arugula, pepperoni,
and basil pesto! But grab a lot of napkins – the juicy goodness drips
from the sausage at your first bite and continues throughout your
sandwich experience. Ask for red pepper flakes and a spicy sauce to
add a kick. You can follow them on Facebook to hear about specials,
new sandwich offerings, and interesting information about Curbside
and its owners.
The next time you’re looking for a place to eat lunch, just take a drive
with your window open – your nose will lead you to one of these fun
food options.

dining
Combine a sunny day or a moonlit evening with culinary perfection and you have found
the formula for an endurable memory which you will want to repeat again and again.
Outdoor dining awakens all of the senses, especially when shared with family and friends.
OUTDOOR DINING
BoatHouse Restaurant, Winona Lake.
Upscale-casual atmosphere overlooking
Winona Lake. Menu features include ribs,
steaks, chops, pasta, seafood, sandwiches, and
a beer and wine list.
Cerulean Garden, Winona Lake. Cerulean
Garden features a more laid back approach
in a seasonal outdoor space. Rotating
beer on tap, old world wines and summer
concert series.
Channel Marker, Syracuse. A great
location for boaters and others looking
for casual dining. The menu is largely beach
food–sandwiches, burgers and seafood.
Regulars recommend the Baja fish tacos
with mango salsa and the S.S. Ribeye, a Philly
cheese steak.
Sun sparkling on the water. A gentle breeze blowing through
colorful umbrellas. A hint of steel drums and laughter floating
through the air. Boats maneuvering to be docked at the pier.
Delicious aromas of food being prepared. Every one of your senses is
stimulated. This is the beginning of a great eating experience at The
Channel Marker in Syracuse, one of Kosciusko County’s gems.
The Channel Marker is one of our family favorites. Our children live
all over the world, but when they make the trek home we all gather here to enjoy the unique
tropical atmosphere. Even in the cold winter months you feel that you are in a happy place.
The owners have created three unique dining areas. The first area is indoors, and includes
the main dining room with a full bar, as well as a family dining area. Take a few steps and
you are out on the second area, the covered open-air deck. This tropical setting overlooks
the channel between Lake Wawasee and Syracuse Lake. The deck can accommodate
just about any party, from an intimate date for two to large groups. Live music is an
integral part of the eating experience out on the deck. The Tiki bar is the third area in the
restaurant. Kick back, order a drink and enjoy the open air. No matter which area you
choose, the service is impeccable. The Channel Marker staff’s attention to detail is sure to
please visitors and regulars alike.
The menu has enough options to satisfy everyone’s palette, from tropical influenced seafood
dishes to traditional plates. Two of my all-time favorites are the New England Clam
Chowder and the Seafood Fondue. If you enjoy surf and turf, the Steak Alaska is generously
stuffed with crab meat and topped with a hollandaise sauce. Out at the Tiki bar, the menu
is slightly different, but just as tasty.
Over the years, we have created many happy memories at The Channel Marker. Its great
service, delicious food, and unique setting make it a Kosciusko County favorite.

There is something
Capraesque about Winona
Lake, Indiana. I discovered
this during my first visit. The
historic architecture, a snuggled
patchwork of seasonal and yearround homes, the manicured
lakeside park. When a friend
invited me for the weekend, I whole-heartedly accepted.
It was a chance to step away from the urbanity of
Chicago and decompress into a more relaxed pace.
“Dinner at Cerulean?” my friend proposed innocently.
“Sure, why not?” I knew nothing about this restaurant
and only expected the same sort of quaint charm that
Winona Lake offers to both residents and visitors alike.
Little did I know.
Our evening at Cerulean began at its intimate bar area
where Jason, a talented mixologist and true beverage
artisan, prepared our drinks. For inspiration, I described
a concoction to him that I typically request and asked
him to surprise me with something new. He did indeed.
I was delighted with the cocktail and was even given the
opportunity to name it. (Named it for myself, of course.
C’mon, do you blame me?)
Cerulean’s “modern sensibility” was immediately felt
in its décor, its service and its clientele. The vibe was
comfortable and unpretentious yet chic. And the menu
exemplifies this. Their culinary team crafts an impressive
seasonal menu that is playful, inventive and thoughtful.
Their farm-to-table approach offers diners the chance
to taste the pride and craftsmanship of Indiana farm
products. Perusing the menu became a challenge. I
wanted to try everything. We began by sharing our first
course orders of an extraordinary tomato soup, fluffy
corn fritters and duck terrine. Happiness. Then, we
couldn’t pass on ordering from their sushi menu. Yes,
they offer sushi, too, and it was heavenly. The Winona
roll filled with house smoked salmon, tempura red
pepper and cream cheese was blissful. After my eyes
rolled back into my head, we were presented with
second course selections of beef tenderloin (cooked to
perfection), duck carbonara with lemon fettuccini and a
succulent pork porterhouse. Nirvana.
To cap a perfect evening of dining, Cerulean’s gracious
manager, Joni, stopped at our table and made us feel
even more at home.
My experience at Cerulean captured me, and it
cemented my impression of Winona Lake as a “Bedford
Falls” for the new century. I think Capra would have
agreed.

live well in the moment in
The Orthopedic Capital of the World
®
While the orthopedic industry accounts for approximately 6,800 direct jobs,
another 6,200 jobs exist in the county because of the orthopedic industry.
Together, those 13,000 jobs make up more than 40 percent of total employment in the county.
The Orthopedic Capital of
the World® in Kosciusko County
exemplifies entrepreneurship. In
1895 a single entrepreneur, Revra
DePuy, formed the company
credited with establishing the
orthopedic industry in Warsaw,
Indiana. Then, in 1927, area native
and former DePuy employee J.O. Zimmer launched his
own company. The creation of Biomet followed in 1977.
Kosciusko County is now home to more than 30
orthopedic device manufacturers, serving as world
headquarters for market-leading Biomet, DePuy Synthes
Joint Reconstruction and Zimmer. Leading industry
suppliers Paragon Medical, Symmetry Medical and
Medtronic Spinal & Biologics also have manufacturing
facilities located in Warsaw.
Advancing Orthopedics
for generations to
come.
This entrepreneurial spirit grew as additional orthopedic
companies formed throughout the region. The resulting
medical device industry’s innovation has improved
orthopedic devices, treatments and helped individuals
worldwide to live well in the moment by relieving pain
and restoring lost function for improved quality of life.
Warsaw-based and regionally
focused, OrthoWorx is dedicated
to building on our community
strengthens as The Orthopedic
Capital of the World.®
OrthoWorx, a non-profit organization, was created in
2009 to build upon improved quality of life for the
industry employees and their neighbors, innovation and
entrepreneurship, workforce and employee professional
development. These are important community oriented
issues common to the orthopedic industry cluster and
OrthoWorx members.
Working collaboratively with the
orthopedic industry, other life
sciences partners and regional
stakeholders, we are leveraging a
legacy of orthopedics for a more
vibrant community today and in
the future.
Working collaboratively with the orthopedic industry
and regional stakeholders, OrthoWorx has convened,
catalyzed and invested in an array of initiatives to
improve the environment for orthopedic company
success, while contributing to the broader community’s
vitality.
The result? An improved
environment for orthopedic
company success while
contributing to the broader
community’s vitality. When the
orthopedic industry thrives, our
whole region thrives.

creative are you feeling? Choose from

or work in fused glass, silver art clay or wet
clay. Reservations are not necessary. Open
all year, seven days a week.
The Bowling Alley, Warsaw. The Bowling
Alley is a 16 lane family friendly fun center.
We offer a 24-7 non-smoking facility
featuring The Cafe and full bar service.
Step into the Pottery Bayou studio
in the Village at Winona, and you suddenly
have the urge to be creative.
I’m not sure if it’s due to the atmosphere—
the beautifully restored building with
hardwood floors and spacious tables—or if
it’s the friendly staff members who are always
ready to help. It could be the studio’s scenic location on Park
Avenue that invites you to relax and use your imagination.
Maybe it’s the possibilities—the rows of bisque items and dozens
of paint bottles that set the mood for creativity. Or maybe
watching other people work on their projects causes you to think,
“Hey, I could do that!”
Whatever the reason, it doesn’t matter if you’re an artist or not.
Pottery Bayou gives you the opportunity to have fun making
something. Whether you come alone or with others, you’ll leave
with a sense of accomplishment and a feeling of time well-spent.
Pottery Bayou opened its doors in 2004—as the first paint-yourown pottery studio in the county. It’s still the only shop of its kind
in a 50-mile radius, and draws people from miles around.
The shop attracts all ages of customers, both experienced and
beginners. I’ve seen first-hand how the generations can work side
by side on projects. In fact, my own kitchen displays items made
by my grandchildren at Pottery Bayou. Each time they go, they
have a great time.
Deena Cutshall started the business, inspired by childhood
memories of painting ceramics with her grandmother. She wanted
to establish a place where people could get together to have fun,
be creative, and make memories. And through the years, Pottery
Bayou has very successfully done that.
The shop ownership changed hands in 2013, when Cutshall and
her husband moved out of state. New owner Gina Voelz took over
in July, with the shop’s staff members remaining in place, making
for a smooth transition.
So what can you do at Pottery Bayou? You can choose from a
variety of bisque items and colorful glazes to paint your own piece.
If you’d like to try something different, there’s fused glass, wheel
throwing, or wet clay hand building. There’s even pottery-to-go
for home-based painters.
Seasonal classes are offered for adults who want to perfect their
skills, and kids can enjoy summer “camp” sessions. Upstairs in the
loft, there’s a special space designed just for birthday parties. Invite
your friends, bring a cake, and celebrate by making something
together
Pottery Bayou inspires people to be creative and offers an
activity that young and old can both enjoy. Learn more at www.
potterybayou.com or find them on Facebook.

SAILING
Lake Wawasee
Winona Lake
This was an amazing scene.
There along the shoreline of Big Chapman
Lake were two fishing boats that were worlds
apart in appearance and function.
About 25 feet from the large weed bed was
Barnacle Bill in his beat-up old 12-foot Jon
boat which featured a hundred dents and
very little paint. He got to his favorite fishing spot by rowing
across the lake.
Pulling up to the same weed bed, but about 50 feet away, was a
$40,000 20-foot Nitro Z-9 featuring a powerful 225 horsepower
L OptiMax Pro XS. This costly craft was owned by Melvin
Mossback who was decked out in a gaudy outfit loaded with
patches that had the ducks saluting when they flew by.
Ol’ Barnacle Bill would never make the cover of Bass Masters
magazine with his soiled pants, wrinkled and torn shirt, and a
smelly green hat that was so rank with odors that flies refused to
land on it.
Melvin’s floating tackle shop had a Z-6000 Liquid Crystal Graph
fish finder, a pH meter, a Color-C-Lector, a temperature gauge, a
gallon of Fish Formula II and ten cans of Vienna Sausage.
I was fishing on the other side of the weed bed and was able to
watch and listen to everything that happened.
“Howdy,” Barnacle Bill shouted to the bass angler. “Done any
good today?” He wanted to know.
“Well, I’ve been doodle-sockin in the veggies with a large Twister
Tail and got two strikes and one nice bass about 15 inches,” he
answered.
“I see you’re using a Jitter Bug,” Melvin continued. “I don’t
suppose you have much to show using that thing this late in the
day.”
“Wellll, not a whole lot,” ol’ Barnacle Bill replied. “Here’s what I
got so far.” With that he held up a stringer that had four bass on it
--- all over two pounds.
I thought I was going to fall out of my boat laughing!
This scene does remind me, however, of the fact that in Kosciukso
County there are 105 beautiful lakes that can handle any kind of
boat and angler.
Wawasee and Tippecanoe lakes have cabin cruisers, while small
lakes like Pike, Palestine, Carr and Hill are just perfect for canoes,
kayaks and small rowboats.
In other words, there’s a lake for every boat.

Bicycling is social, it’s healthy,
it’s fun, and you can make it what
you want. In Kosciusko County one
can bike for exercise, for competition,
to enjoy family time, or just for
leisure. As a child, I practically lived
on my bike; and like any kid, I rode
in the general area of my house. As I grew, so did my cycling
addiction as I discovered the Winona Lake trails. My friends
and I used to sneak through a backyard in Southtown Estates
to ride through the woods into Winona Lake. Thankfully,
this route is now a public Greenway and available to all –
paved for walking, running, or cruising on bikes. So much
of our community is now being connected in this way and
it’s exciting to see. It is literally faster to take your time on a
bicycle to get to certain places, rather than drive around the
lake. This success story isn’t limited to Winona Lake. Thanks
to the Ride+Walk Warsaw+Winona Lake initiative, it has, over
time, become a reality throughout the county. Greenways
and bike lanes in Warsaw have become more prevalent, and
the Kosciusko County bikeways are now marked to indicate
mileage for those interested cyclists.
What still amazes me most about cycling are the people you
meet. The diversity in the bicycling community is incredible.
It’s a social neutralizer. I have made friends whose ages range
from teen to retiree, from varied economic backgrounds, to
prominent members of the community, to successful business
owners, and even government officials. No matter where we
come from, when we’re riding or just talking about bicycling,
we’re all the same.
Jim Zachary
I love to ride bikes because you get to meet so many very
nice people. My dad introduced me to bicycling on the
trails. I wasn’t very sure about it because I had heard it was
a little dangerous, but I knew my dad wouldn’t tell me to do
something he knew I couldn’t do. Once you’re out to the trail
a few times with someone you can trust, you learn the trail and
become more comfortable with it. Now, I love the feeling when
I make it up a hard hill, and I get excited when I go down steep
hills.
I love the Village at Winona where there are lots of unique
shops to ride your bike to. Winona Lake is an awesome place.
It seems like everyone knows each other. My dad and I love
to ride down to the edge of the island to watch the sunset. It
might be the most awesome spot in the county to watch it.
Also, the Village at Winona has many events for everyone,
including The Fat & Skinny Tire Fest. It’s basically a whole
weekend in May that’s full of fun! There are games that involve
bikes, and bike races, and lots of other activities. I got to help
out at last year’s event and had so much fun. I saw lots of my
friends and loved being in the sun all day helping people and
watching my dad race.

Exciting or peaceful,
active or relaxed, classy
or down-home familiar,
lodging facilities on
Kosciusko County lakes
offer it all. Whether you
want to enjoy water sports,
fishing, or a chance to sit and enjoy watching the flow of
the water, there are plenty of places that can accommodate
your desires. My husband and I enjoyed several of those
options this year.
The newly renovated Oakwood Resort in Syracuse offers a
stately hotel with a variety of accommodations, including
specialty suites. The Oakwood Inn features a large central
staircase leading up from a pleasantly decorated lobby, as
well as other picturesque features that make it a soughtafter locale for weddings and celebrations.
The hotel staff welcomed us with a generous dose of
Hoosier hospitality, and soon we were relaxing in a thirdfloor suite with a vaulted octagonal ceiling in the living
area. The nearness of the lake was magnified by the bay
window, while the bedroom offered an expansive view of
the lawn and gazebo. The Pier and Back Porch restaurant
and bar on the main floor offer a variety of fine dining
options. In addition to regular breakfast, an exquisite
complimentary continental breakfast is provided for hotel
guests. Perched on the south edge of Lake Wawasee, the
largest natural lake in Indiana, the resort also includes
cabins and vacation homes, and offers over 8,000 feet of
event space, a swimming pier, golf cart rental, boat slips,
arcade games and a fitness center.
Treehouse Island on Webster Lake offers a water view
from every window and has something for everyone.
While a fisherman’s haven in a lake known for its Muskie,
there is plenty of opportunity for water sports, including
swimming, paddle boating and kayaking. This private
island retreat also provides restful options of building
a sand-castle on the beach or taking a boat out for a
relaxing ride. The hammock, Adirondack chairs and a fire
pit provide a wonderful gathering place to enjoy summer
sun or pleasant evenings looking across the lake. A bell
is available to salute the Dixie, Lake Webster’s historic
paddleboat, as it passes. We loved the wildlife décor of
this remodeled three-bedroom, two-bath cottage, and
were thrilled with the cozy fireplace, since the evening was
chilly.
On Hill Lake near the town of Silver Lake, EverCalm
Cottage offers a quiet, cozy retreat from the busy world.
The sunroom is perfect for listening to songbirds while
sipping a cup of coffee in the morning. Row out in the
provided boat to enjoy the quiet of the lake. Or take the
five-minute drive to Maple Lane Bakery to pick up an
Amish pie or other delicacies.

Church Directory
Ours is a faith-based community with as many churches as our lakes and people.
Indiana’s Kosciusko County churches welcome you to traditional, contemporary, large
and small, and everything in between. Find the perfect place to worship, inside or out!
(Summer months offer boat-in and outdoor services.)
The Greater Warsaw Ministerial Association provides an
internet Church Directory of Kosciusko County. The GWMA
meets the second Wednesday of every month; 7:30 am at
Richard’s Restaurant in Warsaw and also schedules united
Christian prayer and worship opportunities throughout the year.
All events are listed on our website.

Warsaw Moments
Winona Lake Moments
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at B-Mac’s before you head out for your
day of discovering the great attractions that have made Warsaw a
must-visit destination in Northern Indiana.
Begin your visit in Winona Lake by stopping at the Light Rail
Café and Roaster for breakfast, and then enjoy a morning
stroll along the Heritage Trail. This greenway not only offers
scenic beauty, but also an outdoor art exhibit along the trail.
Stroll through the Warsaw Biblical Gardens, the 4th largest biblical
gardens in the world, and then just across the street enjoy the
Gardens of Central Park.
From June through September, don’t miss the Walk-n-Wander
Warsaw sculpture exhibit throughout the downtown.
Browse through our downtown shops, including Indiana Antique
Company, Dennie House, The Next Chapter, Buffalo Street
Emporium, and MudLove Pottery.
Now that you have worked up an appetite, check out the lunch
offerings at our food trucks and locally owned restaurants such as
Mad Anthony’s, The Corner Grill, Greeks Pizza, and many more.
Head to the eastern edge of Warsaw to discover the only
complete collection of Hallmark ornaments on public display. The
Hallmark Ornament Museum at The Party Shop has over 4,000
ornaments on exhibit.
With four lakes within its city limits, there are plenty of
opportunities to enjoy Warsaw’s water! Our local water ski team,
Lake City Skiers, offers free waterski shows on Hidden Lake.
Dinner opportunities in Warsaw are abundant. From American
Table’s relaxing atmosphere to sushi at Noa Noa, there is surely a
restaurant to please your style and taste buds.
During the summer season, Wagon Wheel Theatre is a must-do
Arts and Entertainment stop. This summer season includes: Mary
Poppins, Catch Me if You Can, Gypsy, Fiddler on the Roof, And Then
There Were None, and The Marvelous Wonderettes.
Not ready to head back to your hotel? Check out our nightlife.
Whether you are interested in the beach bar at Spikes, karaoke
at Bennigan’s, or some great craft beers at Mad Anthony’s and
Redwood Firewood Grill, we have the perfect end to your evening.
This is just one example of the moments you can create in
Warsaw. Visit our website to personalize your moments by using

Now it is time to see what the Village at Winona has to offer!
Visit with the artists and artisans that make up this unique
shopping area. Talk with Lauri at SACS & Co and learn about
the art of soap making. Visit Canal Street Gallery where you
can browse the huge display of beads and accessories to
make your own jewelry. Paint your own pottery at Pottery
Bayou. Enjoy a unique blend of timeless and of-the-moment
furniture and home accessories at The Bungalow.
Now comes the big decision—where to have lunch. Is
it Cerulean’s where you can enjoy a bento box lunch or
some sushi? Or is it the Boathouse where you can enjoy
a great lake view while experiencing the award-winning
cuisine at this upscale but casual restaurant. Oh, and did we
mention Kelainey’s Sweet Dreams for one of their salads and
sandwiches—and don’t miss the ice cream and homemade
waffle cones.
Next is a visit to the Olive Branch and Spice Merchant.
Sample oils and vinegars from around the world, some aged
12 to 15 years. The Spice Merchant offers a selection of over
2,000 high-quality herbs and spices. Also plan to stop by the
Carousel Winery where you can taste award- winning wines
in their tasting room.
A visit to The Lake House offers water sports shopping
and also the opportunity to schedule a sunset cruise, rent
a paddleboard, or enjoy many more fun lake activities.
After your sunset cruise, enjoy dinner at the Boathouse or
Cerulean’s, where you can dine outdoors and continue to
appreciate all that Winona Lake has to offer.

Pierceton Moments
North Webster Moments
Your visit to Pierceton is all about the hunt – as in antique
shopping. Enjoy the antique shops that line the downtown area.
Start your visit at Village Antique Gallery filled with unique and
unusual European and American antiques.
Your visit to North Webster begins at Maria’s House of Pancakes.
Their delicious omelets are too big for a standard-sized plate
and are filled with the freshest cheese, meat, and veggies. What a
perfect way to start your day!
My Red Moon Curiosities and Collectibles, the newest addition
to downtown Pierceton, offers an eclectic mix of new, vintage
and antique home décor. Shop their women’s boutique with
designer handbags, shoes and jewelry, and couture clothing.
After breakfast, browse through the Heart of the Lakes Antique
Mall, Kosciusko County’s largest antiques and collectibles
destination. Seventy dealers display their wares throughout a
10,000 square foot showroom.
Time for a little break from shopping? Chocolatier Diana Heckman offers hand-dipped specialties made with premium Belgian,
Swiss, German and American chocolates. The store also offers
light lunches, including quiche, salads, soups and ice cream treats.
Also visit the White Front Shops which house three locally
owned gifts shops: Golden Mermaid, Duck Weeds, and Artistry
in Gold. You don’t want to miss the unique lake-oriented finds in
these shops.
Just down the street, browse through Blue Pearl Fine Estate
Jewelry & Antiques. Here you will peruse fine art, estate jewelry,
furniture, and antiques.
Pilcher’s Shoes is the biggest shoe store you will ever visit!
Pilcher’s strives to correctly fit each customer who walks through
its doors. They carry every shoe size imaginable, from AA to
GG.
Visit the Lakeland Art Gallery where local artists offer their
original paintings, pottery, jewelry, and other art forms for sale at
the Gallery and Gift Shop.
A unique shopping experience for everyone who has a special
little one in their lives is a visit to Stephan Baby. This locally
owned company offers heartwarming gifts for babies, including
clothing, blankets, plush toys, socks, photo books and frames, and
silver and inspirational keepsakes. The Boo Bunny was designed
by Jan Stephan right here in Pierceton!
A stop at the Old Train Depot, built in 1867, will have you
reminiscing about days gone by and learning about Pierceton’s
history. The restaurant and bar located in the refurbished Old
Train Depot serves bountiful sandwiches, such as Philly steak,
Reuben or Muffletta; plus a homemade soup of the day, perhaps
tomato bisque, potato or gumbo. A sampling of daily house
specials can include enchiladas, hot chicken salad, or prime rib.

If you plan to spend some time around the lake during your
visit, you might want to visit Bart’s Water Sports. Bart’s offers
the largest selection of water sports equipment and boating
accessories in the Midwest.
During the summer while in North Webster, don’t miss taking a
ride on the Dixie Sternwheeler. You’ll get a little history, lots of
old-time music, and loads of fun on a 75-minute cruise around
Webster Lake. Passengers line the upper and lower decks of
this bright white vessel to get a look at the historic and cultural
sites that are revealed on a recorded commentary. While you
enjoy the gentle lake breezes, you can snack on concessions sold
onboard.
Before or after your cruise, enjoy dinner at Ye Olde Pub, a locally
recommended dining experience.

Syracuse Moments
Mentone Moments
Start your day off in Syracuse at Cool Beans Espresso. This
gourmet coffee shop also offers some of the best food in
Syracuse. Try their huckleberry pancakes!
Your day in Mentone begins at Java Jack’s. We recommend
the fried egg sandwich, just like grandma used to make.
During the summer (May – October) attend the Syracuse
Artisan and Farmers Market. At this popular farmer’s market
you will find a varying array of goods as the season moves on.
Browse and buy hand-crafted wares produced by local artisans,
with everything from quilts and purses to hand-blown glass and
paintings.
Visit the many shops along the Village area, as well as downtown.
Absolutely Appeal and Gifts is a great choice for gifts, apparel
and lake décor. In addition, WawaChic offers a variety of lake
décor, furniture, lake clothing, and jewelry. This locally owned
shop also offers artwork by local artists.
Stop for lunch at the Huntington Street Bar and Grill. Located
in one of the historic buildings in our downtown, this locally
recommended neighborhood bar’s motto is “If we are not
your neighborhood bar, you need to move.” Enjoy salads and
sandwiches for lunch and fine dining options for dinner.
Visit the Water Lilly Art Gallery. This gallery offers originals,
limited prints, and sculptures by area artists.
Creative Fish Art Gallery represents over 75 artists and offers
over 20 classes each year. Find the perfect handmade gift at this
truly unique and trendy studio. If you have a little more time,
take a class and discover your artistic side.
A day on the lake is one of the best ways to enjoy this lakeside
community. Take a relaxing cruise around the lake on a pontoon
rented from Griffith’s Wawasee Marina or Main Channel Marina.
If you want to enjoy the lake views without being on the lake,
wander along the Wawasee Trail System. This trail offers both
biking and walking along the shores of both Syracuse Lake and
Lake Wawasee.
The best dining in Syracuse is outside and lakeside. Options
include the Channel Marker with their Tiki Bar, Sleepy Owl with
their outside dining area complete with a fire pit, and The Porch
located at the Oakwood Resort, also offering lake view outside
dining.
Browse the Lawrence Bell Aircraft Museum dedicated to
Mentone native Lawrence Bell. Bell Aircraft invented the first
supersonic jet, piloted by Chuck Yeager. Bell Aircraft is also
known for the first jet-propelled airplane, the world’s first
commercial helicopter, the Bell X-1A, and the first jet vertical
take-off and landing plane.
Take in some shopping in this small town’s downtown area.
Book lovers will adore Pete & Freedy’s Pages Aplenty. This
small town book store offers over 15,000 titles..
The Little Shop in the Woods offers a full line of antiques,
including furniture, depression glass, vintage dolls, and jewelry.
Terri’s This and That offers furniture, antiques, household
items, stained glass, and jewelry.
A good place for lunch is Teel’s Family Restaurant. Teel’s
specializes in home cooking and offers a lunch buffet.
During the season, Teel’s Orchard offers fresh apples, apple
butter, and cider.
No trip to Mentone is complete without visiting the famous
Mentone Egg. This 3,000-pound egg is definitely a photo
stop during your trip.
Art lovers won’t want to miss the Hudson Gallery of Fine
Art. The gallery features works by Robert Hudson, as well
as a variety of guest artists.
On your way out of town, a short drive will take you to K
& K Soy Products. K & K offers handmade soaps, lotions, lip
balms, and candles—all made from soybeans.
Normally held the first weekend in June, you don’t want to
miss the Mentone Egg Festival.

Etna Green Moments
Nappanee Moments
As you travel to Indiana’s Kosciusko County
from the west, you enter the town of Etna
Green. Make a stop at the Etna Green Café
for some great home cooking and hear about
all the news that is news in Etna Green. You
may even run into our own John Davis on one
of his visits to the café before he heads out for
a morning of fishing.
On the border between Indiana’s Kosciusko
County and Elkhart County, we claim a portion
of Nappanee as our own. Known as the
Gateway to Amish Country, this small town
offers plenty of activities for the whole family.
U-picks and farm markets are located
throughout the Etna Green area; visit Craig’s
Blueberries and the Berry Patch during the
season.
A large, colorful, western mural is painted on
the side of a downtown building facing the
town park.
Don’t miss the inaugural Randy Miner
Memorial Country Run on June 7. There will
be a live family-friendly radio broadcast all
afternoon and a festival atmosphere for all ages
to enjoy.
