Local Seniors
“Seniors would be in serious trouble
without ACCESS,” stated Bonnie, a
73-year-old retired nurse and college
teacher. “No one is going to pantries
to take advantage or for freebies; we
go there to survive. If ACCESS wasn’t
there, we wouldn’t eat!” This is the
plight of many of our seniors in the
Rogue Valley. With the down-turn in
the economy, ACCESS is seeing an
increasing number of seniors who
need our services.
“The problem is, my income doesn’t
go up much and groceries are going
up twice as fast,” said Bonnie. “I try
to take stock of what I need at the
beginning of the month when my

the month. If an emergency comes
up, I borrow from neighbors, or I just
plain do without.” Bonnie receives

Executive Director

It is our privilege to serve those in need, and thanks to your
wonderful generosity during the past months we were able
to serve our community. Though not all needs were met because of a struggling
economy, we are still thankful for a great response, including 365 first-time gifts
during the holiday season. We are also thankful for our many partners, including
The Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul and so many others.
Holiday donations are vital, and are a reminder of the continuing need throughout the year. ACCESS assists one in four Jackson County residents 365 days a
year. In the past six months, we’ve seen a 17 percent increases in food boxes
served; and over the past year, a 58 percent increase in requests for emergency
rental assistance and 27 percent increase in energy assistance requests.
Senior residents are also in need, including Bonnie, who we’re highlighting in this
edition. Bonnie is a 73-year-old senior with living expenses exceeding her fixed
income. She’s turned to ACCESS simply to help make ends meet and survive.
Thankfully, there are extraordinary volunteers like Jan Bingham, who was recognized for her efforts at the Gold Hill food pantry, 1 of 19 ACCESS food pantries
serving Jackson County, with Qwest’s Community Champion Award. Because
of her dedication, the pantry will receive a $5,000 grant on her behalf.
Again, thank you for rising to meet our community’s needs. We urge you to
continue reaching out to our neighbors throughout the year.

2008. She is currently employed as the
Rogue Valley Transportation District
General Manager. Julie hopes her
leadership, belief in serving people in
the community, and ability to build
partnerships with other organizations
will be an important asset to ACCESS
and the clients it serves.
Ms. Brown has worked at RVTD for 14
years and was named general manager
in 2007. She has served on numerous
local boards and committees, including
board member for the Advocates
for the Developmentally Disabled,
ARC of Jackson County, in-house
chair for United Way Campaign, and
board member of the Oregon Transit
Association.
“I believe that people can make a
change in their community and that
the change starts with oneself,” Brown
said. “I personally volunteer many
hours within my community and
know that without organizations like
ACCESS, our community would be
unlivable.”

Oregon. He relocated
from the Willamette Valley to the Rogue
Valley in 1982 with the Fred Meyer
organization.
In 1990, John was elected to four
consecutive terms in the Oregon
Legislature, representing Medford and the
surrounding area.

and is the Past President of the Medford/
Rogue Rotary Club.

Record breaking Success!
The 19th annual ACCESS Senior Fair
took place on Tuesday, March 3rd
at the Medford Armory, and by all
accounts it was a resounding success.
It was a record-breaking event in all
major areas, which included a record
84 vendors and over 5,000 attendees
for the day.
The Senior Fair is the region’s largest
one-day event just for seniors in the
Rogue Valley and has now drawn the
attention of some businesses outside
our region. This year we featured
vendors from Portland, Salem,
Eugene, and Bend.
Don’t let the name fool you, this
event is for all ages, but the seniors
who attended are the heart and
soul of the event. They found quality
information on all kinds of subjects
that ranged from retirement finances
to how to stay in shape using one of
the latest video games.
Our main title sponsor this year was
Medical Eye Center, which gave
away thousands of free samples of
eye drops, vitamins for eye health,
and free eye screenings throughout
the day. Of course the day would
not have been complete without
the traditional Free Bingo, with the
celebrity bingo callers from News
Watch 12. We are sure that without
their support the fair would not have
been as much fun or busy.
The Fair has been and will be one
the Rogue Valley’s best sources
of information and products that
seniors need to improve their lives.
It raises awareness of senior issues
and helps solve those problems by
services that ACCESS and the other
non-profits offer that were at the
fair. Please mark your calendars and
look forward to next year’s 20th
anniversary edition—we are planning
it to be even bigger and better.

ACCESS was able to help Bonnie by signing her up at one of our 19 food
pantries, where she receives a box of food each month. Through Fresh
Alliance, (a food recovery program), we are able to distribute a limited
amount of meat and fresh vegetables to our pantry clients. Bonnie also
receives a Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) box once a
month, which is a federal program for low-income seniors, which provides
nutrient rich foods like peanut butter, cheese, and juice.
When Bonnie had surgery, ACCESS was able to provide the needed
medical equipment through our Medical Loan Equipment Department.
