Can ad a Day - Beth Israel
Familyshul.org AUGUST—SEPTEMBER 2 0 1 3 /AV ELUL TISHREI 5 7 7 3 Canada Day BETH ISRAEL SYNAGOGUE בס"ד בס" ד Rosh Hashanah is a time of dichotomy. On the one hand, it is a yomtov, when we celebrate with festive meals and nice clothing. On the other hand, it is the beginning of the Days August of Awe, when we turn to the Almighty with trepidation, expressing remorse for our actions Marilyn Cohen over the last year and resolving that this year Isabel Rodnunsky will be better. How do we harmonize these contrasting feelings and convey the message of Rosh Hashanah to our chil- Jack Soroka dren? It is important that we appreciate our children’s ability Rosemary Kitay to understand that solemnness can be celebrated and emRowena Schwartzberg braced. Otherwise we run the risk of their rejecting the day’s Rebeccah Rosenblum concerns. We are celebrating G-d’s coronation by humankind on the sixth day of creation, but recognizing that with Lilach Gabriel the rights of being His subjects come the responsibilities of Elaine Romanovsky service. Stan Greenspan One of the customs of Rosh Hashanah where we find this Claire Wornovitzky complexity expressed is the Tashlich. On the first day of the Bernice Milner year, we walk to a body of water, where we symbolically throw away our sins. While we strive to make the event as exciting as possible, bringing out the whole family (somebody asked me this year if they can bring their dog!), some people bringing breadcrumbs, singing and dancing, we must not forget the solemnness of the occasion. We are ridding ourselves of our sins. This year, for the first time ever, we are joined by Beth Shalom for Tashlich. I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome Rabbi Kliel Rose, their new rabbi and welcome the Rose family to our neighbourhood. I am especially grateful to Rabbi Rose for agreeing to the joint Tashlich. When one contemplates the intense meaning of the custom, it is a particularly appropriate initiative to approach as a community. Tashlich is the time when we throw away our sins and August resolve to be better Jews – more dedicated to Torah and mitzvos. David & Robin May this year be a year of improved dedication to Torah and Marcus mitzvos and may we grow as a community in our commitJoel & Tsiporah Raboh ment to Ahavat Yisrael, Ahavat Hashem and Yirat Hashem Bernie & Miriam Adler (love of our fellow Jews, love of G-d and fear of G-d). And Bobby & Sharon Cairns on behalf of Rabbanit Batya and myself, may you all be Abie & Myra Kacew blessed with a healthy, happy and sweet new year. I am humbled by the many who expressed their wishes with cards and donations, meals, and to me personally. Thank you once again. Sincerely, Robert (Dov) Wood BETH ISRAEL SYNAGOGUE ~ www.familyshul.or g The President Presents I am truly proud and honored to be the President of such a wonderful Shul for the next 2 years. In this position I will make myself available to all those who want to chat, discuss, suggest and even complain although I hope the latter will be minimal. To keep the Shul running smoothly and effectively requires many energetic and dedicated staff and volunteers. Rabbi and Rabbanit Friedman provide amazing leadership and energy; not to mention Luba running the office. Luba has really made my position a lot easier and is transforming the office with Keren and Lilia into a more efficient and well-run administration. Yuri is also a tremendous worker and we are appreciative of the hard work he contributes. Not to be outdone the new Board serving the congregation is deeply committed to the interests and future of the Shul. They certainly keep me on my toes. Summer is traditionally a quiet period; not so at BI. We are bidding a sad farewell to Alan & Orna Richter, our charismatic youth directors as they pursue further education and training. They have really resurrected our youth department with exciting well-attended programs. We are currently busy with interviews for new candidates. BI in conjunction with Maccabi held a wonderful golf tournament. Although we could have had more golfers, those who participated and attended the dinner and entertainment really enjoyed the day. Everything flowed freely from the golf and dinner to the refreshments provided to the golfers on the course. A special Yasher Koach to chief organizer Mike (Mr. BI) Zabludowski and Jodi at his side and their volunteers for all their hard work in making this a really special event. Many thanks also to all the sponsors and prize donors as well. We wish the Friedman family a safe trip to Australia to celebrate the Rabbi’s sister’s wedding in Sydney. Mazaltov to the entire family. As the next bulletin will be published after the High Holidays, I wish you all together with my wife Rosemary, children Marc, Andy, Sam & Nikki, a Shana Tova U’metukah. Gabbai’s Gab “Shoes and Don’ts” Everyone knows that we fast on Yom Kippur but not everyone is aware of another prohibition. That is one should not wear leather shoes on Yom Kippur. The primary reason for this is that we are to afflict ourselves on Yom Kippur. Historically, leather shoes were considered to be an ultimate in foot comfort or even a luxury. Not wearing leather shoes was a way of marking the difference between Yom Kippur and the rest of the year. There is actually one other day that we do not wear leather shoes and that is Tisha B’Av. Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement and regardless of what you have done in the past, I urge everyone, and particularly the men who will be coming to the bimah, to wear shoes that are not made of leather. I also wish to remind the congregation of a don’t that applies to Rosh Hashonah. When the kohanim do the duchenin, the priestly blessing, the long chant that they do is their domain and theirs alone. The congregation should remain absolutely silent and should not be singing the chant with them. The kohanim deserve and are entitled to this respect. I wish everyone in the congregation shana tovah and an easy fast. Lewis Wasel Stan Kitay BETH ISRAEL SYNAGOGUE ~ www.familyshul.or g Director’s Diary Keren, no need to keep nagging me for my article to the congregation – here it is…. A Big Big “Thank You” “Todah Rabah” to Isabel Rodnunsky who has done our cards manually for over 10 years – but as time goes by and with progress we are now doing it on our computer. Isabel built up a wonderful system of doing the cards, we are going to try and keep the system going as smoothly as she did. Thank you once again Isabel for leading the way – I know that you and Miriam Rabinovitch are really making headway with getting all our Yarzeits for the congregation together – We are nearly there and soon you’ll be getting Yarzeit notices too!! Thank you to all of you that sent in your membership forms. You know we in the office can only do as much as we can do but much of our work relies on volunteers and members to make our work not so much easier but certainly smoother – Yasher Yoach to all our wonderful volunteers who have come forward to help with so many of our hiccups and projects that we do to keep the shul running smoothly!! Andrew Gergely comes running in on a Friday after work to set the lighting & heating/air-conditioning for Shabbat and the week-end. He does his best – and we complain “It’s too Hot!!’ It’s too Cold” What can we do Andrew, we’re human – thanks Andrew for all your hard work! I could go on and on thanking individuals but it will come as the months go by. In the meantime our office is running smoother, we really are a team at the shul! Included in our team are two ladies who help us regularly, Ina, Yuri’s wife whom I think you have all seen at some time or another and is at our side at any minute of the day when we need her, as well as Olena who keeps our washrooms and any other part of our shul that needs extra cleaning clean, to these two ladies and to Yuri, Lilia and Keren a sincere “Thank You” The whole team which includes me, wish you all a Happy New Year and an Easy Meaningful Fast and if we have offended anyone during the the past year we do apologise, Sincerely Luba.
