If you concentrate on growing referrals and word-of-mouth (WOM) marketing you can cut your marketing budget. Not only does WOM marketing not cost you anything, it’s more believed by potential customers. A recent survey by PowerReviews of 800 retail customers reported 95% of respondents have consulted customer reviews in the past. But how do you grow that solid base of referrals and people willing to write reviews? Hire Right Begin at the beginning. If you employ people who are killing time in their position, you cannot expect them to provide mind-blowing customer service. Find people who are passionate about your product or service, or passionate about the industry. When someone is passionate about what you provide, your customers will feel it. Treat Employees Right As John Jantsch says in the book The Referral Engine, “Employees will treat your customers the way you treat them.” An employee without passion for what you do, who is treated poorly Staff President: Terri Schulz will never wow and delight your customers. On the other hand, one who loves what they do VP of Operations: Kathy LeClair and is empowered to do right by the customer will do so again and again. VP of Tourism: Mitch Swenson Information Services: Lynn Tolle VP of Sales: Tom Weiss Do Something Special When the boys from the Time Bandit (as seen on Discovery Channel’s popular show Deadliest Catch) opened a store to sell branded items like tee shirts and jackets, they could’ve relied on In this issue: their notoriety alone to sell mass quantities. What small business wouldn’t love having items Meet Your Director 4/7 New Members 5 Let’s Put Waupaca On The Map 12 New Findings 8 modeled every week on an internationally-acclaimed TV show? Instead, people who ordered from them online were surprised by a special note in each package thanking them for the purchase and encouraging them to share a picture of themselves wearing it on social media. Not only did they make customers feel appreciated, they also continued their free Continued (Continued on page 2) from page 1) advertising by asking people to post their items on social. Other great examples of delighting the customer are practiced by brick-and-mortar stores that add samples to customer bags without their knowledge or ones who wrap everyday items as if they were small treasures. These little things impress customers. Shoppers remember them and they tell their friends. Ask for Referrals Most people want to view themselves as helpful. If you delight your customers and provide them with a great product and exemplary service there is no reason why they wouldn’t refer people to you or write a review. No reason, except that people are busy, and good service is more apt to slip our minds than a bad experience. For this reason you have to ask for the referral or the review. Reviews rarely just happen out of some altruistic need for people to help businesses. Give them a reason to want to write a review and then ask them to. Referrals and reviews are the lifeblood of business these days. To improve your referrals hire right and empower your employees, delight your customers, and ask for them to share their experiences. It’s the easiest, most effective, marketing you’ll do for your business. Christina R. Green teaches small businesses, chambers and associations how to connect through content. Don’t Make a $163,000 Mistake: Costly Common Safety Concerns March 14, 2016 Reprinted from Wisconsin Safety Council Guest Columnist: Paul J. Lawonn, Partner, North Point Knowledge & Training On December 31, 2015 the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) issued citations to the Dollar General Corporation for serious, willful, and repeat violations at one of their Texas stores based on employee complaints. The citations point to very common safety concerns found in most workplaces; concerns that are often overlooked and not corrected. The total proposed penalty for all violations was $162,800! What were the problem areas? The compliance officer identified blocked electrical panels, unmarked exit doors, cluttered aisles, unmounted fire extinguishers, and unsanitary break areas. Several of these violations had been cited by OSHA before, and for that reason, some violations were classified as repeat and/or willful violations. The following is a list of their recorded citations: Citation 1 Item 1: Serious violation- 29 CFR 1910.37(b)(2): Each exit was not clearly visible and marked by a sign reading “Exit.” Several exits did not have the required signage above the exit. Penalty: $3,300 Citation 2 Item 1: Willful violation- 29 CFR 1910.37(a)(3): Exit route(s) were not kept free and unobstructed. Boxes of product loaded on pallets and placed on the floor were not stored in a manner to allow unobstructed access into or out of the store exits, exposing employees to the hazards of entrapment and fire hazards. Penalty: $60,500 Citation 2 Item 2: Willful violation- 29 CFR 1910.303(g)(1)(ii): The required working space about electrical equipment rated 600 volts, nominal, or less to ground, was used for storage. In the stock room, working space for electrical panels was used for storage; and access to the circuit breaker panels were blocked by stock and material boxes exposing employees to electrical fire and burn hazards. Penalty: $44,000 Citation 3 Item 1: Repeat violation - 29 CFR 1910.22(a)(1): All places of employment, passageways, storerooms or services rooms were not kept clean and orderly or in a sanitary condition. In aisles and break room areas, employees were exposed to hygiene, trip, slip, and fall hazards when taking breaks and/or handling merchandise without the work area being maintained in an orderly and sanitary condition. Penalty: $22,000 Know A Student Completing Grades 9 through 12? Building for Our Future Get to Know Your Directors Each month we will feature one or two members of the Chamber Board of Directors. A way to get to know them and why they are an Investor of the Chamber. I was brought to Waupaca through my experience away from college while attending UWSP. After finishing school in the area of computer science my father asked me to get involved as the fourth generation in the family business. He asked me to go to a trade school program in Memphis, TN to learn how to grade lumber and run a dry kiln. This was a four month program and I was happy to do it. As I was finishing my third month I was told he sold the business and I was out of a job. Needless to say I started to scramble but found some good opportunities. A few years later I realized I wouldn’t get very far working for someone else’s family business and instead pursued real estate. My broker at the time complemented me on some success not knowing I was barely breaking even, so I needed to move on. I was asked by a friend if I had ever considered selling insurance. “Of course I hadn’t.” I said. I went to school for computer science and by now had been asked several times why I hadn’t pursued a career in that. At this point it had been 5 years and so much had changed, so I would have had to nearly start over. I was having good success with the door to door accident Ins., so I felt no need to go back. The ins. job put my wife through school and everything was going pretty Jerry Tiffany Tiffany Estate Planning well. I started to notice many of my clients having needs with estate planning. This is a lot of different things but an attorney friend showed me enough to be dangerous and I took the rest in my own hands to become as knowledgeable as I could in estate and elder law. I continue to use him to write any legal documentation I need and over nine years later my client base has grown to over 450. I start my clients off with Medicare plans, and later when they need help protecting the things they’ve worked so hard for, I help protect their assets. It can be done many different ways and I try to make the process as laid back as I can. I’ve been in Waupaca for over six years now and have been involved with the Cronies Trail Building Crew, the Chambers LEADS network, Middle School Ministry at Shepherd of the Lakes Church, Shepherd of the Lakes Missional Community, Waupaca Triathlon board member, Waupaca Area Chamber board member, and now Chairman of the Board for Waupaca Area Chamber for 2016. In this short time my family has really made Waupaca our home! I thank God for the gift of flexibility and for the ability to pick things up quickly. I would be nowhere without him! Building for Our Future Jones Publishing Get to Know Your Directors I am the owner of Adventure Outfitters located on 106 S. Main St. in Waupaca. We are a year-round outdoor gear sales, rental and service business. Our summer retail gear includes kayaks, bicycles, stand-up paddleboards, camping gear, waterski equipment, bicycle and paddle sports accessories and more. In winter we carry snowshoes, XC skis, fat tire (winter) bikes, outdoor clothing and other winter sport accessories. In addition to retail sales we rent kayaks, bicycles, SUP’s, snowshoes, XC ski’s and winter bikes. Our services include guided and self-guided kayak trips, SUP tours, tubing trips, snowshoe hikes, XC ski and winter bike tours. I’ve been a Chamber member since we opened in 2013. We also have a seasonal second location on the beach at Hartman’s Creek State Park. At this location we rent kayaks, SUP’s, canoes, pedal boats, bicycles and camping gear. Our camp store has all kinds of camping necessities, food & snacks along with other convenience goods. My choice to become a director was so I could be a part of making Waupaca a great Tim Lencki destination for people looking to vacation. We live in a beautiful area that offers Adventure Outfitters, LLC year-round enjoyment. As a director, I look forward to being a decision maker in our community. I’ve lived in the Waupaca area for over 35 years and am very familiar with what it has to offer, especially in regards to outdoor activity. I would like to use this knowledge to help those who want to enjoy our area. I think one of the challenges for the Chamber is being able to communicate to the masses all that Waupaca has to offer. Marketing is expensive, yet we want people to visit our area. Finding the most cost-effective means of marketing is important. Along with this, considerations need to be made for ever-changing ways we communicate…mainly social media. My hobbies are an extension of what I do at Adventure Outfitters. That is, kayaking, mountain biking, snowshoeing and XC skiing. I like to race mountain bikes competitively. I’ve also been involved with the Chain Skiers waterski team here in Waupaca. I’m going on my 31st year as a member of the team! Going to work everyday is like going to play…for that I’m thankful. New findings allow Businesses to hold Business After 5’s in house and serve alcoholic beverages We recently met with representatives from the WI Department of Revenue, where they explained the state law concerning serving alcohol in a business that is not licensed for alcohol. In their explanation they said that according to Wisconsin State law any business may hold an event at their business location and serve alcohol if the following rules are met: The business must be closed to the general public. The event attendees must receive an invite to the event. Only those who have been invited by invitation are allowed into the event. You must be able to prove who was invited by keeping a log of the invitation list and have that at the event for verification. With these findings we are instituting a new policy for the Chamber Business After 5’s that are held in a non-alcohol licensed business. Only those who are directly invited to the Business After 5 will be allowed to enter. Therefore if you or your staff would like to be invited to these Business After 5’s you must provide an email address, for each person that wishes to attend, to the Chamber. When the invite is sent it will be for the person and their spouse/significant other. If you have staff who you would like on the invitation list please notify Kathy with their email address at [email protected] or call the Chamber at 715.258.7343. 2016 President’s Club A special Thank You to these Investors who have agreed to support Chamber Events for 2016.
