Ever heard the saying, “If you need something done, give it to a
busy person.”?
While that may work for errands, many business owners are
finding they’re too busy for business anymore. Small business
has changed a lot over the past decade and the demands on a
business owner’s time have multiplied like rabbits.
Businesses must now connect with buyers offline and on
through:

Blogging

Videos

Creating and providing helpful content

Tying different forms of content aimed at conversion into the appropriate level of the sales
funnel

Maintaining a fan page and/or multiple social media profiles

Publishing on through leader and niche social sites like Medium, Quora and LinkedIn
publishing

Analyzing your analytics

Tweaking all of this knowledge and know-how each time a platform changes or rolls out a
new feature, and keeping up with new technology

many small business people don’t.
These activities all increase your know, like, and trust with your customers or clients. People
do business with people they’ve established a connection with through these aspects. The list of
tasks provided above contains essential marketing practices and to avoid them, or refuse to do

them, is akin to ignoring your phone. But while you may feel too busy to do these things, you must ask yourself are you
busy for business or too busy to do business?
The Difference Between Good Busy and Bad Busy
Good busy relates to customers. You have lots of people buying from you. You’re processing so many orders and credit
cards you don’t have time to breathe. This is good busy. You spend all morning on social media but not posting or
interacting, just scurrying down one rabbit hole after another. You’ve spent time on social media and have been occupied
all morning, leaving less time for other business activities, but you’ve accomplished nothing. This is bad busy. The
problem with being busy – good or bad – is that it’s exhausting. If it’s in service to your customer’s or clients, that’s
beneficial to your business. If it’s helping you to establish know, like, and trust, the fatigue is worth it. But social media
and digital marketing are not like a treadmill. You don’t get points for just getting on it and moving. You need it to go
somewhere. Being busy doesn’t equal being productive and reaching your business goals.
How to Change a Busy Activity into Business
As a business owner you need to ensure your busy is productive. To do this, have concrete goals in mind. Goals need to
be:

Realistic

Measurable

Time sensitive

Specific
“Busy” should always accompany its friend “productive.” This means your goal needs to be tied into your business
strategy. A goal is not to “get” on social media. Even if you tailor that goal to follow the rules above, it’s all busy work if it
doesn’t tie into what you are trying to accomplish for your business. If regular social media posting is your goal, you need
to understand not only the how but the why behind your actions. What are you trying to accomplish? More sales? More
visitors to your site? Better quality employees? These are all different goals.
Analyze Your Efforts Often
The best way to avoid unproductive busy-ness is by reviewing your efforts often. Tie your goals into your strategy and
ensure you are accomplishing what you’d like by analyzing the results (at least quarterly). We all have the same 24-hour
days, yet some business owners are able to accomplish a lot more of their revenue goals than others. Some of that is luck,
and a sexy product or service, but in today’s digital marketing a lot of success depends upon building worthwhile
relationships and getting off of that unproductive treadmill of doing the work but not going anywhere. It’s not performing
the action that will get you there but streamlining your efforts, and continually pointing yourself in the direction of where
you want to go.

Get to Know Your Directors
Each month we will feature one or two members of the Chamber Board of Directors. A way to get to know
them and why they are an Investor of the Chamber.
I was born & raised in a suburb of Chicago. My parents loved coming to this
area for mini vacations, and when some of their Chicago friends moved to
Iola, our family followed. As a teenager I vowed to move back to Chicago as
soon as I could, but MANY YEARS later, I find myself in this beautiful
community and loving every day. I am married to Al, and we have two
beautiful daughters and two adorable grandchildren- who are the love of my
life. Although I live in Iola, I have worked and owned my own business in
Waupaca for over 25 years. I worked at a local bank before getting into the
insurance business. I decided I wanted to help clients understand their
insurance and help them purchase the appropriate insurance needs for
them, so when the opportunity came up to work with American Family
Insurance I jumped at it, especially since I could keep my business in
Waupaca. As scary as it was, jumping into something I had NEVER done
before, I knew in the long run it would be a great opportunity for me and my
Deb Domask
family. Four years ago I was blessed with acquiring the clients of an agent
that worked with American Family Insurance for over 40 years. He was a
American Family
true mentor to me and I was happy to have him there for me in my early
Insurance
years. I have been a Chamber Ambassador for several years and really
enjoy getting to meet new business owners. Their excitement about starting a new business in Waupaca is
so inspiring and they truly love the support of the Chamber and community. I have been a board member for
3 years now and it has helped to open my eyes as to how much the Chamber does for our community. I am
happy to be part of the board and love being able to help the business community. In my spare time I love to
read, workout, and in the summer garden with my husband. I truly think Waupaca has a lot to offer and I take
advantage of keeping my business local by visiting the businesses, shops and wonderful restaurants that this
area has to offer.

Chamber Golf Outing Committee Looking for 100 Prizes
It was a huge success last year so it will return for this year’s golf outing. A 50
square Raffle Board will be at each course this year, Hidden Waters and Waupaca
Country Club. Squares will be sold for $10 and everyone is guaranteed to be a
winner.
The committee is asking you to donate an item, gift certificate, bottle of wine, you
name it. If it is worth $10 or more, they would love to have it. Prizes of course can
be worth more than $10 too, the bigger the better.
With the outing planned for June 6th we need your donations now. Please
consider and think with your donation how we can help a graduating WHS
senior and make Waupaca a more beautiful area. Proceeds benefit the
Chamber Scholarship Fund and Beautification Fund.
Take your mobile emails up a notch
Submitted by Cellcom
Sending texts and emails from your phone is a part of life and business, but maintaining your professionalism doesn’t have to go out
the window when you’re on the go. Consider these quick tips from Cellcom to master mobile messaging:
Edit your email signature – The default signature in the stock mail apps typically only indicates the message has been sent from
a mobile device, but doesn’t include your name or contact information. You can edit the
signature in your settings menu. For iOS go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendar and scroll down to signature. For Android,
it can vary depending on your device, but if you go into your mail app, tap the menu button and then settings, you’ll see your
signature – simply tap to edit.
Create keyboard shortcuts – if you find yourself typing the same word (like your company name) or phrase on your mobile
device, create shortcuts to save you time when crafting your messages. On iOS, visit Settings>General>Keyboard>Shortcuts
and tap on the plus sign in the top right corner. You’ll see blanks for phrase and shortcuts. In the phrase, type the longer
phrase you want to show up and in the shortcut bar type the letter combination you want to expand to your phrase. For
Android, visit Settings>Language & Keyboard>Input>Personal dictionary. You’ll again tap the plus sign to add your phrase
and shortcut options.
Avoid emojis and emoticons – Ever wonder why the letter “J” shows up in emails on your phone? Or why there’s a box with a
question mark inside on your desktop email client? Emojis that are commonplace in texting and messaging don’t always
translate to desktop email. Conversely, emoticons, created using combinations of symbols on your
desktop computer, don’t show up as intended on mobile devices. With emails being cross-platform in many
business situations, it’s best to leave these icons out if you don’t know where the recipient will be reading the message.
In our fast-paced world, emails sent from your mobile devices does not have to mean sacrificing time or quality. Follow
Cellcom on LinkedIn for more tips and updates on mobile technology.

Beautiful natural resources, small town
charm, superb dining experience,
events and attractions. These are the
things that draw visitors to and keep
residents in the Waupaca area year
after year. But, without someone there to give directions,
take a dinner order, promote attractions or prepare a
comfortable place to rest, none of these things could exist
in a way they do. Jeff Anderson, Regional Tourism
Specialist, Wisconsin Department of Tourism, will provide
customer service training on Thursday, May 12. 5:30-6:30
p.m. at The Boathouse (Clear Water Harbor) and Friday,
May 13, 7:30-8:30 a.m. at the Chamber office. The cost is
just $5 for up to five individuals from your business to
attend. To register call the Chamber office at (715) 2587343 or email Kathy.
