We hope to see your LAYOUT here 2016?
Welcome to AMRA WA Model Railway Exhibition
The Western Australia Branch of the Australian Model Railway Association hopes you enjoy our
Exhibition for 2015.
There are layouts of different sizes and scales. Layouts modelling different continents and
countries, and layouts showing many different modelling styles. Beauty is in the eye of the
beholder, meaning there is something here to amaze and entertain everyone.
We are supported by retailers from across Australia and their stores are certain to have
something to tempt you.
Preservation Societies are also well represented with members
keeping our rail history alive.
In 2015 our Exhibition is supporting CanTeen, an organisation supporting children living with
cancer. We ask for a gold coin donation for children taking a turn on our U-Drive layouts in the
Robinson Pavilion. All money raised goes to CanTeen.
If you are a rail modeler we invite you to show your layout in a future exhibition. Please
approach the Information Centre in the Link for information and to register your interest.
Please enjoy the show.

Exhibition Managers
CanTeen was founded in Sydney in 1985 by six teenage cancer patients and a group of
health professionals. Their mission is to support, develop and empower young people
living with cancer by providing an Australia wide peer support network for young people
aged 12 to 24 years old.
CanTeen’s young people – called Members – are aged between 12 and 24 and have experienced cancer themselves or in their immediate family,
CanTeen provides psychological and social support programs in the form of camps and
recreation days all over Australia to provide members with a place where they can simply
be young people, away from the daily pressures of living with cancer in the hospital or at
home. Through a range of camps and programs, CanTeen encourages Members to share
their experiences, make great friends and have fun.
For more information on CanTeen’s programs, services, resources and research for
young people living with cancer visit :www.canteen.org.au

EXHIBITORS DETAILS
Exhibit 1 — Medley Layout of the Southern Railway Modellers Group
WA
Owned by a small group of keen modellers this is an “OO” 4mm scale layout
exhibited as a diorama at this year’s show. Built for both lightness and
strength in construction, Medley is designed to be able to grow and be
exhibited in different guises. We have recently been granted money by
LotteryWest and are in the process of building a larger more interesting
layout which should be ready for 2016.
Medley is not based on any one particular station but on an amalgamation of
Southern Railway practice (maybe Medstead and Ropley?) the intention
being to eventually model exact station buildings, goods sheds etc. At the
moment we have used Superquick card kits as the layout is still a work in
progress. In time Medley will become an integrated extension of our now
permanent club layout, Alton, branching off as the Watercress line when not
on exhibition.
This new layout is running DCC, a new venture for us with sound
locomotives, and we are always looking for new members.
Contact CME Chris Walker on 0418918451 or view our website on
www.southernrailwaymodellersgroupwa.org.au
Exhibit 2 — Haskell Co has operated in Taiwan for over a dozen years,
and in the last 5 has produced models of Australian trains and photographic
backdrops for Australian model railways. Models produced by us include the
first Australian RTR fine scale 0 scale (the VR DERM railcar), the first NSW
and SA ready to run 0 scale models, Victorian 0n30 "Puffing Billy" models,
Queensland HOn3.5 models (produced with Wuiske models) and a number of
Taiwan HO models. We also hope to display samples of a new model at the
Perth AMRA exhibition which we believe will be of interest to many people
attending so come and see what it is! This is the first show we have exhibited
at in Australia.
Exhibit 3 — Mineral Loadout On30 By Scott Parker This layout is a
fictious location of a freelance narrow gauge railway using diesels and steam
locomotives with small mining skips to move the minerals, log wagons to
move cut down trees and small train of goods wagons for general supplies
moved about the railway.
7
Exhibit 4 — Cravens At just 7' 0" (2100mm) long Cravens is very small for
an 0 scale model and is more of a diorama than a layout. The model depicts a
small factory complex on a cross city link line in southern England. The
factory has its own internal narrow gauge railway. All railway stock is built
from kits or scratch built.
This diorama/ layout is for sale and would provide a ready made introduction
into 0 scale modelling, and could be incorporated into a larger project.
Information available from John
Exhibit 5 — Harman’s Halt Harman’s Halt has come around from the
culmination of a few factors. I have been around model railways from birth
with my grandfather being an avid railway modeller for many, many years.
The railway itself started off on my honeymoon where I bought a OO9 wagon
from the local hobby shop, that was forgotten til a trip to Pinjarra where I
discovered the wagon in the suitcase. After joining NGRM and finding out
about a local narrow gauge appreciation group, my layout started to go from
an idea to reality. Once drawn up the supplies were bought and under the
careful guidance of John Watts my layout took shape. The station is named
after the late Victor Harman a close friend of my grandfather’s and myself
who guidance made me fall in love with the GWR. The policeman at the
station is my tribute to him.
Exhibit 6 — Llanilar is a station on the Ystwyth Valley Railway, a Central
Wales narrow gauge (2ft 3ins) line. It is located five miles (8km) to the south
east of the port of Aber Rheidol (Aberystwyth). The railway follows the Afon
Ystwyth valley and was built to serve lead-zinc mines located around
Cwmystwyth.
Modelled in 009, (4mm to the foot scale using 9mm track) Llanilar is a module
from a larger layout using locos and rolling stock from the North Wales
Narrow Gauge Railway (NWNGR), the Welsh Highland Railway(WHR) and the
Ffestiniog Railway (FR) from the 1890 to 1930 period. The locomotives are kit
built using proprietary mechanisms. The rolling stock is scratch built or kit
built.
Amongst the locomotives there is a battery powered radio controlled model
of WHR Russell and a battery powered radio controlled model of a Colonel
Stephens Rail bus.
Exhibit 7 — Durham Town U-Drive and Ossie Gully U-Drive We are
supporting CanTeen with these self drives a gold coin donation will let you or
your child drive the trains for a little while.
8
Exhibit 8 — Mid-West, Illinois Winter 1950’s The location: Peoria
Division, Illinois, the main theme of our layout is the Mild –West operating
area of the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe (ATSF) and the Nickel Plate Railroad
(NKP). This was one of the few places in which these two companies came
close together. Of note is the fact; on the Pekin branch, the ATSF
interchanged with 14 roads in Peoria / Pekin area alone.
The time is winter during early 1950’s and US railroads modernisation
programme is well underway. This is evident from the number of early
diesel locomotives now timetabled on the old steam workings, however the
NKP Mikado's 2-8-2 and Berkshires 2-8-4’ had few years to go hauling fast
freight trains to Indiana, Ohio and onto Buffalo New York..Of interest is
the Santa Fe "doodle bug" was a one-car train that ran between Pekin and
Chicago each day. It carried passengers in addition to picking up mail and
small freight. It took 5 hours for it to travel the 154 miles. It made around 35
stops. The train even carried livestock including live chickens, hogs, sheep
and even a pony or two. The train could carry 30 passengers and could
achieve a speed of 65 mph. It made its last run on January 29, 1955.
The layout was built during 2014 and is modular system utilising mostly 1200
mm x 600 mm units, with some smaller 600 mm x 600 mm unit. Operation is
DCC, keeping the baseboard wiring simple.
Exhibit 9 — AMRA — Raffles, Book, Magazine and Video. Raffles will be
drawn daily, we have surplus books, magazine and video’s for sale at this Exhibit,
a good opportunity to fill in those spaces in your personal collection, perhaps even
find that out of print, hard to find book or magazine.

Exhibit 12 — Backshops 0n30 scale "Backshops" is a Loco and Rolling
stock Repair yard at the END of a narrow gauge and mining railroad in the
Pacific North West in U.S.A. Scenery and structures are scratch built from
recycled materials. Wired for D.C. and D.C.C.. The fiddle yard can be
removed to extend the layout into other sections-scenes as required
Constructed by LES WYATT.

Exhibit 16 — Fred Rance ever since I was a small boy growing up in North
Perth and had a couple of country trips on trains to Noongar and Bodallin
where my relies lived, I loved trains, spent a lot of time over at East Perth
running shed watching trains, hen in 1964 I joined the WAGR as a Trainee
Engineman, had 42 years on the job finished up in Claiseberook driving
electric railcars where I retired 2007, in my spare time I love painting trains
in acrylic paint which I have been doing for some years now.
Exhibit 17 — Hills and Plains and Trains by Simon Eason
This is a model railway that I built with my Dad and my Grandad.
The actual track and trains were previously owned by my uncle. Before he
owned them, my Grandad got them from a work colleague.
Some of the carriages and trains are 50 years old.
I have three Pullman coaches and four Intercity coaches.
In total I have about twenty coaches and about twenty-five goods carts.
The track design was adapted from a Hornby railway book I was given when I
got the track. There are two special parts that I designed myself. One of
these is the little hill right at the front and the other is the fiddle yard behind
the scenery. The fiddle yard allows me to store extra coaches that I want to
use.
The hills are made by creating a terrain out of chicken-wire. It was then
covered in several layers of Papier-Mache, then in Plaster of Paris to add
texture and finally covered in a few layers of paint.
The setting is in the English country side during Spring.
In the background you will see a snow caped mountain that I thought would
be nice to have. Tip: to uncouple trains just use an old nail.
Exhibit 18 — Krystof and Halina Bajorek
11
Exhibit 19 — The AddaBookshelf Railway “HOWITZDUN”
This layout was originally designed to replace an existing adjustable height
Bookshelf with a model railway which seemed more usable than some “old”
books that would very rarely get read by anyone & gather more dust than
something more “useful” like a model railway would.
With this idea in mind - I began making a series of “Photographic” modules
which could be connected together & be used as a small layout when I want
to just “play trains” or use it to just “test” any of my loco’s or carriages
through different switch points or bends to see if they’ll stay on the tracks
after servicing or repair work has been done.
This layout was 1st built ( & shown ) in 2005 at the annual A.M.R.A. W.A. model
train show & then again in 2007 & can be seen in my “Photo Gallery” pages of
my “Kev’s Workshop” website showing how I’ve done it, as in the main
station’s name “Howitzdun”, while “Wundunup”, the other station on this line,
shows the 1st of the 3 modules to be all “done up” with scenery & which the
middle module was the “transmission” module showing the in between stage
from the stage 1 to stage 3 of making a model railway, i.e: Howitzdun.
Exhibit 20 — Spider Express WA home of ANTONS Trains, UNEEK, OZ
Kits and Kerroby. HO gauge model railway accessories, made from a
combination of cast white metal, resin, timber, plaster, lost wax bronze, and/
or etched brass. Models are sold unpainted and unassembled Kerroby

Exhibit 21 — ENNIWAYR, an N scale layout by the FREMANTLE and
DISTRICTS MODEL RAILWAY ASSOCIATION.
This name grew from the Clubs wish to accommodate the diverse modelling interests
which included American, Australian, British and European prototypes. The layout is
therefore set everywhere and nowhere, and if the layout looks a little British in flavour,
that's just coincidence! This 14' x 9' (5 x 3 metres) layout comprises a three track
mainline which circumnavigates the layout twice. Outer tracks carry passenger traffic
and fast goods, with the inner one for goods only.
A branch line leaves from the Enniwayr yard passing through Heaa, a fishing port then
terminating at a hill village resort called Thayr.
All lines are able to operate automatically. The freight yard by the main station is
manually operated and features a hump shunting ability and turntable.
Storage, test and warm up tracks are hidden on the inside layout. This layout can
normally operate with ten to twelve trains.

Exhibit 23 — Gresley End Presented by Bob Charteris
This 00 gauge layout has working trams and underground trains.
Gresley End is a (fictional) London suburb in 1950. Gresley Broadway still has gas
lighting in the centre aisle of the road. Its buildings are a mixture of turn-of-thecentury terraces and cottages and later commercial developments. It is the twilight of
the London tram system, which at one time had more than 2000 cars in operation.
Gresley was one of the few locations served by both tram and the London
Underground. Gresley End station (a temporary building following bomb damage in
1941) was on a single line spur, used by both the Bakerloo and Metropolitan lines to
connect to their main services. Now more buses are appearing in readiness for the
end of tram services and the closure of the Underground line.
Exhibit 24 — American Dinosaurs Presented by Malcolm Taylor
A diorama in HO scale
These dinosaurs are ‘Hulett Unloader’ cranes built from 1899 to unload the Great
Lakes iron ore ‘boats’ to deliver the ore by rail to the steelworks.
They worked 24 hours a day, with a crew of 3 including the driver who operated in the
cab just above the clamshell bucket.
Exhibit 25 — Iron Horse Yards Presented by Sierra Pacific Modelers (Inc)
In the late 1950’s, it was the last gasp for giant steam on the Sierra Pacific Lines. By
this stage, dieselisation was nearly complete and the last train to be headed by a ‘Big
Boy’ ran in 1959.
Iron Horse yards depicts in HO (3.5mm = 1foot) scale a major locomotive depot at the
foot of the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains as it would have appeared during
that era and reproduces the train movements involved in servicing and maintaining
heavy steam at that time.
13
Exhibit 26 — West Coast Remote Control Trucks inc. We are a club based in
Perth with an interest in 1/14th scale remote control model trucks and the buildings,
construction machinery and other associated equipment to go with them.
We have quite a range of members from young to old, male and female members based
in both Perth and country areas around Western Australia and have now been in
operation for nearly five years.
We have quite a range of vehicles and other equipment in our club ranging from RC
motorbikes all the way through to race trucks, drift cars, nitro powered vehicle and a
lot of other things in between.
Our club travels around WA (Perth Metro and country WA) putting on displays at rural
and agricultural shows, motor shows, hockey clubs and not forgetting some of the
major events in Perth like the Truck and Trailer Expo and Model Railway Expo.
We now have an established a base of operations thanks to the Gosnells Police and
Community Youth Centre, located at 17 Royal Street Kenwick WA 6107, sadly have had
not much time to use it as we have away doing shows but if you check our calendar
pages on our website it will show when we will be there.
The main aim of our club is to put on a satisfying, safe and professional show for the
public, promoters and members with the hope of generating new members as we go
along. New members whether local or country are the lifeblood of any club and we
welcome any potential newcomers to this entertaining hobby.

Exhibit 27 — Northern Suburbs Model Railway Jubilee Branch Line is an N scale
layout by members of the Northern Suburbs Model Railway Group. Regular show
attendees will notice the continued expansion of this “work in progress” including a
detailed city vista. This city module will see exciting new innovations which will be
completed in the coming years.
The overall plan was to allow each member to build a section of scenery, yet have an
overall flow that represented a typical branch line. The size and shape of each section
has been determined by the need to store and transport the layout by the individual
members. Each section connects seamlessly but has its own theme – Australian,
British, or American.
The landscaping includes numerous interesting features, rocky outcrops, tunnel,
bridges and roadways. From mainline station to numerous destinations, Suburban,
Rural and Industrial. Diesel and Steam locos thrill any onlooker with interesting
activities, such as turn-tabling, shunting, mining and changing stock content when
least expected.
The landscaping is a work in progress but the layout should prove to be busy and
entertaining. For more information contact Kim Motteram by
Email: [email protected] or by phone 08 9300 5149.
Exhibit 28 — Tinkering Tools At Tinkering tools you can find high quality
hand & mini tool supplies for all your model building. We strive to update our
range constantly knowing every modeling project requires its own unique
finishing process.
We stock the ever popular Burfit Tools who have been manufacturing a range
of precision pliers for many years, and these are all made from high quality
surgical stainless steel.
Come and see what’s new.

Exhibit 30 — Alan Porter is showing two of the 4 ft. x 3 ft. modules from his
WHEATSTONE BRIDGE layout. These two ‘end modules’, along with two others, were
built between 1965 and 1970 and were first shown as a static exhibit at the second
Model Railway Exhibition organised by the W.A. Branch of the Australian Model
Railway Association. This was held in the Perth Town Hall in 1976.
In the following year he exhibited WHEATSTONE BRIDGE as an operational layout
with the same four modules plus another five new modules and a two-module ‘fiddleyard’. At that exhibition, held in the Subiaco Civic Hall, WHEATSTONE BRIDGE
impressed the visiting public so much that it won the inaugural ‘AMC Trophy’ for ‘The
Best Exhibit by Public Vote’.
The two modules on display are largely unchanged since when first built although
both have had one or two make-overs in the intervening years. They reflect some
features of railway modelling nearly fifty years ago – modelling terrain using papier
mâche, cardboard buildings, scratch-built track, etc. – most of which have been
superseded by more modern materials and techniques.
Alan will be giving certain parts of these modules a further face-lift during the
Exhibition – don’t hesitate to ask questions!
Exhibit 31 — TRAINMAN Here you will find a big range of second-hand trains for
sale from all over the world. Everything is in good working order. You can see them
run on the test track. Also lots of accessories like buildings, lights, figures
etc. After the show you can ring TRAINMAN on 0409115071
Exhibit 32 — Rail Heritage WA are the founders and operators of WA’s Railway
Museum, located in suburban Bassendean. This society of volunteers was founded in
1959 and opened the Museum in 1974, already celebrating their 40th
anniversary. The Railway Museum is open every Wednesday and Sunday afternoon,
at 136 Railway Parade, Bassendean.
The society publishes books and journals on WA rail history, and also provides major
exhibits to rail heritage projects at Boyanup and Dowerin.
The Rail Heritage stand will display a comprehensive range of rail books and journals
for sale, plus an interesting historical display.
A special event each year at the Museum is ‘Railfest’, this year on Sunday 11
October.
See advertisement on following page
Exhibit 33 — The Enchanted Forest, an N scale layout by Kelvin and Carol Davis and
family. The Enchanted Forest is a place where imaginative folk can see fairies and
wee folk enjoying the benefits of rail transportation of their heavy goods.
This layout makes use of natural and gnarled bush timber and drift wood to create
entangled undergrowth that has traits of Lord of the RIngs, Avatar, Hogwarts and
Fairyland. There are gumnut houses and apartments in tree trunks. You don't have to
be "off with the fairies" or a nutter to enjoy this glimpse of a mystical realm.
The Davis family can be contacted by email at [email protected].
This layout is for sale.

Exhibit 38 — “Kleinhoff” This small N gauge digital layout shows that the
complexity of a layout in not in its track network but in the schedules assigned to its
trains. The single loop of track plus a branch accommodate three passenger and
one freight train, all running under computer control. To complement their
commuter services, a single bus runs between the two stations crossing the railway
tracks twice and stopping at the working boom gates. There is a lot to see in just
four square feet of space.
Exhibit 39 — “Constance” at HO scale is packed with interesting features in a
small space, Working signals, overhead catenary wiring, digital control plus an
automated staging yard. Its delightful scenery was made by its lady owner with a lot
of help from her partner.
Exhibit 40 — “Civic” is a busy Marklin HO 3-rail layout in a city setting with belowground commuter trains, trams and Faller motor vehicles. Scratch-built high-rise
cardboard buildings have passenger lifts and the traffic lights actually stop the
traffic.

Exhibit 45 — Is this the end by Malcom Jefferies This is an unfinished but on
going part of my O Gauge layout Which will Be about 20 Meters in length in my new
train room in the back garden.
It a GWR layout set whenever but this is the end bit so I'm building Backwords so hence
the name.
The buildings are not the ones I would like so they are Temporary. The station is based
on HIGHWORTH in Wiltshire my home town.

Exhibit 47 — MIDSOMER ONADORE One of the novice NGSWA members Nigel
Fisher, with assistance from the experienced members embarked on a building
project both as a learning experience for him, but also to show the general public that
you do not need a lot of experience to get into the hobby. Midsomer Onadore was first
shown at last years exhibition as a ‘Work in Progress’. Based on a branch line in the
Cotswolds the line features local traffic, but can also be very busy with diverted traffic
from the Great Western East/West and North/South Main lines in the area. Due to
increased rail traffic, the line has been upgraded to 2 full tracks along with station
changes.
This years layout is no longer ‘on a door’ (it was needed elsewhere), but has been
affixed to a sheet of 16mm MDF – that’s less expensive than a door, but is about the
same size.
N-GAUGE SOCIETY — WA AREA GROUP This year the group of mainly British
Outline modellers have set up a demonstration area where the members will show off
their skills during the weekend. The group is made up of both experienced and novice
modellers, and the aim of the group it to pass on the skills to the newer
Exhibit 48 — J.Y’s Passenger & Freight Jack YOUNG’s Passenger & Freight
My train layout all started when my Godfather Chris gave me the Hornby Original
Simple Loop Track Set with 2 single coal carriages and a passenger car. Now you can
see before you a bustling shunting and coal yard with trains such as Oliver Cromwell
and Connie being up to 40 years old bought from a collector at this same show last
year. Since I have extended my track and nailed it to MDF board. Using a saw and
grinder on the different sized blocks, I carved the hills from Styrofoam and lay the
green grass over it. To make the trees, I bought tree frames from a hobby shop and
twisted the wire branches in to shape. Next I glued clump foliage to stick on to the
branches. From Dad’s driveway, I collected rocks to use as coal to be transported by
the train GWR. Using a water dropper I glued on the ballast between the sleepers. I
placed the sheep on the hills because they will get a good view there. The thin fences,
made from matchsticks should contain my sheep.
Exhibit 49 — Grogley Junction by Jim Coffey was a small wayside Halt on the
Cornish Bodmin to Wadebridge Railway (B&W) until its demise in the early 1960’s. The
B&W can be traced back to the 1830’s making it one of the oldest railways in the
world.
The B&W at Grogley Junction had a branch going to a wharf in the Village of Ruthern
Bridge for quantities of Tin and Iron for export from Wadebridge. Most sidings in these
early days were called Wharfs borrowed from maritime and canal construction as the
word sidings had not been realised in railway terms.
The layout Grogley is an impression taking examples of buildings and scenery as
experienced by the operators of the Grogley Junction.

Exhibit 50 — Kirkhall Valley Railway by Hamish de Haas The
Valesbridge Railway is a fictional OO scale model railway set in the NorthWest Midlands of England. I chose the name Valesbridge because the
fictional town the railway is built around has a bridge running over a valley. I
chose the locomotives that run on the railway out of a fondness for the class,
as it is a fictional light railway I do not have to decide on a particular railway’
locomotives and can pick and choose as I see fit. This layout is set in 1958
and as such has little in the way of diesel traction. This layout was built on a
MDF baseboard with a foam sub-base to provide a flat surface for the track
to be laid on and to provide a basis for the cliff-sides. The foam was then
covered in plaster bandage and painted. The trees are by Woodland Scenics
and the ground flock is by Faller.
My Locomotive fleet consists of:
LNER J50 0-6-0 Side Tank, LNER J72 0-6-0 Side Tank, LMS 3f ‘Jinty’ 0-6-0
Side Tank
GWR 101 0-4-0 Side Tank, GWR 64XX 0-6-0 Pannier Tank
An 0-4-0 Well Tank of an industrial Design, SR D 0-4-0 Side Tank
The rolling stock I use is as follows: Several Coal Wagons of the 8 plank
variety
A GWR Flat Bed, A Box Van, A couple of oil tankers, A couple of four wheeled
coaches
Exhibit 51 — Leafield the little 16.5 mm gauge layout with a future
Leafield is NMRA Western Australian Division’s project railway being built to
demonstrate the basic skills needed to build a portable model railway. The
scene modelled is a station on an imaginary preserved railway in
Buckinghamshire. While Leafield folded up fits into a small sedan it could be
extended to form part of a future larger layout.
The layout is a work in progress. The layout uses techniques described in
NMRA Australasian Region’s Basic Skills Modules, available on our web site
http://www.nmra.org.au/Learning/index.html
The design, construction and exhibiting of Western Lines is being chronicled
in NMRA Australasian Region’s quarterly on line magazine “MainLine” http://
www.nmra.org.au/mainline/index.html. Why not join us as we develop
“Western Lines”?
Exhibit 52 — N Scale Layout by Colin and Elaine Curnow It is a
beginners layout, people can get ideas of how to start to make there layout, I
don’t have a particular scenery as such.
24
Exhibit 53 — Gee Cee Railway 1974 The railway began as a Tyco starter kit in
1974 and consisted of a ’switcher’ (#730 Plymouth) in Penn Central livery with a
Western Maryland 40’ Skid flat (with 3 pipes), a silver Swift 40’ reefer and a red Santa
Fe caboose, plus enough track for a 36” circle.
The layout quickly grew to a 4’ by 6’ table with more track and another loco (Chessie
Alco 430) and more rolling stock with a Hammant & Morgan Clipper control. The track
was in a dog-bone shape with cross overs, a tunnel and three sidings.
25 years dormant with many promises to resurrect the layout not happening. In 2012
my daughter gave me a hobby shop gift voucher, add with a little more money and I
came out with a Powerline EMD PT2 in V/Line livery and a couple more wagons and
resurrection began.
The layout is divided into 2 mainlines with 4 crossovers and a marshalling yard with a
wye that is usable by both mains.
Of the 45 points 25 are manual (remote) and 20 are electric. 23 un-couplers have been
installed.
At this time the railway can muster 17 working locos from 12 manufacturers with 16
different liveries, 81 wagons of 10 types from 15 manufacturers in 53 liveries, all on
203.4 feet (62.019m) of track.
Truly a work in progress. Graeme Chandler
Exhibit 54 — Yarloop Workshops. Situated on the site of the first 1895 mill in the
Yarloop area, these workshops began operations in 1901 and closed in 1978.
Originally housed in the remains of the old mill buildings, they were gradually
developed until they became the centre of Millars' milling operations in the South
West.
Many of the buildings were constructed just after 1900, mainly of timber with
corrugated iron roofs. Although designed as industrial buildings, they are unusual in
their attention to window and door details and machinery housings. Wherever
possible these have been restored.
The workshops maintained the steam locomotives of the extensive and complex
Millars railway system developed to transport the felled timber, and to service the
other 26 South West mills. In addition the workshops manufactured some rolling stock
and mill equipment and serviced stationary steam engines that drove the mills. The
workshops were particularly noted for the construction of replacement parts
(necessary to avoid the delays in acquiring these from the United Kingdom) and still
house an extensive collection of wooden patterns.
The task of cleaning, identifying and cataloguing all the machine tools, pattern books
and other artefacts began in 1985.
Yarloop Workshops will bring some examples of actual railway history of the South
West to be viewed during the Miniature Railway Show

Exhibit 56 — Port Ebb (O scale 7mm =1 ft) This is an imaginary branch line from
Ebford Regis in SW England to the Dorset coast at Port Eb (at the mouth of the river
Eb). The trains you will see are the regular local passenger train, a once daily branch
goods train, a ‘Customs train’ which brings in staff to run the Customs House and also
oil fuel for the ferry boat and last, but certainly not least, the boat train front London
which meets the daily ferry from a French Channel port. Details to note are the fishing
boat in the harbour, the gravel barge on the tide and the activities of the people on the
layout.
Exhibit 57 — The GHAN by Frans Ponjee Trevor Burke and the Modellers of
Australian Prototype
The Ghan is a famous Australian rail journey that operates between Adelaide, Alice
Springs and Darwin. Spanning 2,979km, the journey takes 48 hours to complete.
Originally known as the Afghan Express, The Ghan takes its name from the 19th
century Afghan camel drivers who arrived in Australia and helped to explore the
country's remote interior.
Although construction on the line began in 1878, it wasn't until 2004 that the line was
finally made it to Darwin.
The early railway line often experienced delays and washouts, causing the first flatcar
behind the tender to always carry tools and spare sleepers so that passengers and
crew could repair the line and allow the train to continue on its journey.
The Model of the Ghan is 61m long and represents the journey from Adelaide, through
Alice Springs to the Darwin terminal. You will see both freight and Passenger traffic,
typical of the modern era of railways on the Ghan from 2004 to today.

Exhibit 59 — Western USA 1850 to Present Day in Progress The layout
illustrates USA’s Wild West to the 1950-60’s. As can be seen the layout is
under construction, demonstrating the techniques required to build a
successful layout.
The modular layout demonstrates the diversity of the different types of
railroad locomotives and rolling stock (American, Australian, British,
Canadian, German, Indonesian and Chinese) which our members run in the
club. We encourage and promote the running of model HO/OO trains and its
not unusual to see four nationality of trains being run on the layout.
Exhibit 60 — AMRA Large Scale The Large scale group has continued the
development of the exhibition layout. New for this year’s exhibition on the layout will
be railway signals, gantry and pillar type, plus point lights. For the steam locomotives
there are two steam up bays which will be located at one end of the layout.
Electric track powered trains will have a marshalling yard in the centre of the layout
with a crossing across the new 32mm track.
A complete circuit of 32mm track has been laid as part of a three rail combination
track. This will be used by both steam powered and electric locomotives.
The Large Scale Group will run its Tram when the opportunity arises.
Challenging train operations this year will be a new tunnel. Will Thomas and Percy find
their way through it?
Members of the Large Scale Special Interest group have a diverse range of
locomotives, carriages and wagons to run on the layout.
Steam locomotive operations this year may include double heading of steam
locomotives hauling express passenger locomotives.
We look forward to you visiting our stand to see the 'big trains'.

Exhibit 62 — South West Model Engineers Association (WA) Inc. is a
non-profit organization and was formed on October 12, 1982 in Bunbury. The
Members at this time where looking for a suitable piece of land on which to
build a permanent track and Club headquarters. The Bunbury Council
suggested a piece of Forrest Park’s grounds. The railway line was laid
around the whole area plus a spur line off to the side. Westrail donated the
old Capel Station Building this was moved to the Forrest Park, which gave the
Club a two-room building. The first train ride was on Sunday the 18th
November.
S.W.M.E.A.is now proposing to replace the old Station building, over the
years the station building has been a landmark but it has now reached the
end of its usefulness. At the general meeting in 2010, it was decided to
replace the old Capel Building it is to be transported to Boyanup Transport
Museum and restored. The new station will have a ticket box, tearooms,
store room with a raised signal cabin and includes a gable roofline to the
west and east of building servicing the areas at each end, proposed as well is
skillion roof on south side. There will be a platform roof covering the new 4road station to replace 2-road layout, giving the Club a greater operating
capacity and for the public to enjoy the rides and amenities.
The display is of the proposed station complex at the Forrest Park in
Bunbury.
Exhibit 63 — Northern District Model Engineering Society

Exhibit 64 — Thomas the Tank Engine. Doug has been collecting Thomas the
Tank Engine and Friends for 17 years. He has always got a great enjoyment out of
watching the episodes on TV, for as long as he can remember. After winning a
Thomas set from a magazine competition he decided to collect and then as the
collection grew from 1 table to 6 (not allowed anymore) he decided to display them for
children to enjoy. His biggest joy is the looks on the faces of the children at his
displays. It has now become more than a one man show, so he has the help of his
family, so he can still enjoy his Thomas and friends.

Exhibit 66 — United Modellers is an umbrella group of railway modellers who are
all member of AMRA first and foremost. Members of this group specialize in making
kits of WAGR vehicles and buildings in S scale (1/64 th scale). The group consists of
GA Models, Railwest Models, X class models, West Oz Models, Westland Models,
Mainly WA Trains and others from time to time. Members have again combined
resources for the Model Railway Exhibition.
Each of these modellers produces wagon, coach and locomotive kits as well as kits of
structures and wagon loads. There are also castings of fittings, and decals for
modellers of the WAGR and MRWA narrow gauge system in the period 1920 through
to 1972.
The aim of the stand is to help promote awareness of the Sn3½ scale and to provide
opportunities for modelling the 3’6” railway system in Western Australia. We do not
produce in commercial quantities and we mainly provide our products to AMRA
members. We encourage interested modellers to join us at our monthly meetings on
the second Monday of every month at the AMRA club-rooms, 24 Moojebing St
Bayswater. In December 2014 we celebrated our 300 th meeting since January, 1990.
Exhibit 67 — Sn3½ Modelling Demonstration Desk Sn3½ scale (1 in 64) is
perfect for modelling the railways of Western Australia and being a larger scale than
the more common HO, the models are a little bit bigger. The scale has a strong and
enthusiastic following both here and in Queensland, with a quarterly magazine,
Australian Sn Modeller, produced to provide a communication link between those who
model in S scale. Ready-to-run models in Sn3½ scale are not generally commercially
available, so are either built from scratch, or from kits produced by our fellow
modellers. Stop by the Sn3½ Modelling Precinct, and at the Demonstration Desk you
can watch some of these models being built and chat with the modellers while they
are building them.

Exhibit 68 — Swanview Sn3½ Layout The Swan View layout is a nine
metre long, double track layout with 16.5mm gauge track which is built to
represent the former WAGR station of Swan View situated in the Darling
Ranges east of Perth on the former Eastern Railway to Kalgoorlie in the period
of the early 1960s’ as the line closed on the 13th of February, 1966.
The layout has been constructed to a scale of 1:64 (S scale) so the 16.5mm
track represents the 3’6” gauge of the Western Australian Government
Railways. The buildings are scale models of the actual buildings that were
once found at the Swan View station and its surrounds.
Swan View includes a model of the only railway tunnel in Western Australia
featuring some fine cast rockwork scenery and a ten track storage yard.
The track is by Peco, the scenery is “hard shell” plaster with a major feature
being the many hand made trees.
The model locomotives and rolling stock that you will see running on the Swan
View layout have all been either scratch built or constructed from kits by
members of the AMRA WA Sn3.5 Special Interest Group. The models are
typical of the trains that ran on the line in the early 1960's.
Exhibit 69 — BWT Collectables is a small enterprise run by Tim and
Wemie Mackintosh. We aim to offer an interesting array of useful model items
at affordable prices.
We only attend a few shows and fairs throughout the year so it is important we
have a wide range of model railway and associated items.
Come and see us at our stand to check out our stock of locos, rolling stock,
accessories, books and magazines and much more. We also look forward to
catching up on old friends for a chat.

Cobalt iP Digital works equally well either way,
so it really does not matter if you choose to
drive the trains with DC or DCC…
Cobalt iP Digital always comes up trumps!
Just as happy on either 12~23v DC or DCC, the
versatile Cobalt iP Digital is easy to install and it
is simple to connect as it needs no soldering.
It has two built-in SPDT changeover switches
you can use for point frogs , signals or control
panel lights too, so there is nothing else to buy,
install, tweak or adjust once it is installed!
Control is very versatile... and very simple!
DCC modellers can use full computer control,
macros or routes, a conventional local control
panel or their handset… or all of them at once.
DC modellers can stay traditional and use stud
and probe, Diode matrix or just two simple low
cost push-button switches…. It does not care.
Or BOTH DC and DCC modellers can choose to
use The New Cobalt α Alpha Digital encoder.
This clever new product simply converts all
kinds of traditional switching methods
To “digital input devices” and it lets
you connect your control panel
to your DC or DCC layout…
With only TWO wires!
