Several famous theatres lie along the route as well as restaurants, cafes and shops offering souvenirs, everyday necessities, health foods and Chinese acupuncture. Several of the shop fronts are brightly painted, some quite garishly! © Visit London Images/Big foto/london-pictures.com Chinatown, with its restaurants and shops selling Chinese spices and food, is close at hand. There is a certain amount of re-development all along Shaftesbury Avenue with buildings being renovated and smartened up, and in some instances completely rebuilt. London’s high property prices mean that no area or building has been overlooked! The smaller side streets off Shaftesbury Avenue shouldn’t be ignored. So much of London really is best seen on foot and this part of London is no exception. Remember to look up from time to time as some of the architecture above eye level can be really interesting. Walking up Shaftesbury Avenue towards New Oxford Street you will come to Cambridge Circus, made famous in the George Smiley spy novels written by John le Carre. In the opposite direction, the bright lights of Piccadilly Circus and the fountain with the statue of Eros on top are a few minutes’ walk away. This is perhaps the beating heart of London, the centre of the universe, always busy and full of tourists. Covent Garden © London on View www.clarendonuk.com Int/Mob: +44 1784 489 200 Out & About Almost everything in London is within easy reach. It is not hard to get to grips with the buses and the underground system and wherever you go you will always be within a short walk of something interesting. Give the buses a go - climb on to the top deck and head for the front seats! The National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery are within a short walk; both are fee and offer hours of interest. The Courtauld Gallery is small but perfect, a gem. It is to be found in Somerset House, an important arts and cultural centre. In winter the courtyard is turned into an ice skating rink! A stroll through Trafalgar Square and down The Mall will take you to Buckingham Palace and perhaps the Changing of the Guard ceremony, colourful pageantry which the Brits do so well! The Queen’s Gallery and The Royal Mews, both at Buckingham Palace, are open to the public. Horse Guards Parade is in Whitehall, and further along is Downing Street, the official home of the Prime Minister. . www.clarendonuk.com Int/Mob: +44 1784 489 200 Out & About Covent Garden is pure entertainment! It’s filled with street entertainers, street cafes from which to watch the world go by, some elegant architecture, plenty of interest. Here also is the Royal Opera House, home to The Royal Opera and The Royal Ballet. Covent Garden © London on View For those of you who love to jog, St James’s Park offers the perfect opportunity. The oldest of London’s eight Royal Parks, nearly 60 acres of good paths, grass and trees await you. You need never be bored in London - there is truly something for everyone. According to Samuel Johnson, writer of the Dictionary of the English Language, ‘When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life, for there is in London all that life can afford’. St James’s Park © ondon-pictures.com www.clarendonuk.com Int/Mob: +44 1784 489 200 Shopping The shops in and around Covent Garden Market offer a slightly different shopping experience from the more predictable high street shops. Handmade bags, tee shirts, ceramics, jewellery, teddy bears, vintage militaria - a really eclectic mix. The market itself hosts different stalls on different days - antiques on Monday, on Tuesday to Friday stalls offer household goods, clothes, food and gifts, and on Saturdays and Sundays it’s the turn of arts and crafts. Never a dull moment. For clothes and fashion shops not too far away, Long Acre, King Street, James Street and Floral Street have a wide selection. There you will find many of the well known designer brands plus a few that you probably won’t have heard of. For tailor-made suits, shirts, hats and shoes, Jermyn Street is the place to go, but it can be expensive! Put on some comfortable shoes and explore! If you are in search of a more mainstream and bustling retail experience, Covent Garden © London on View Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road are both popular shopping destinations and provide fashion, technology and furniture to the masses. For department stores, John Lewis, House of Fraser and Selfridge’s in Oxford Street should fit the bill. Don’t miss a visit to Liberty’s at the top of Regent Street, where Regent Street meets Oxford Street. The building alone is a treat, both outside and in, and the creative and imaginative managers of the store never fail to root out and have on display unusual and unique items. Further down Regent Street towards Piccadilly is Hamley’s toy shop, a great place for toy lovers of all ages to while away some time. World-famous Fortnum & Mason is at 181 Piccadilly. ‘Purveyors of the finest foods and teas’, the shop has supplied the Royal Family for many decades. It is extremely elegant and an enjoyable place, if somewhat expensive, for a cup of very English tea. www.clarendonuk.com Int/Mob: +44 1784 489 200 Dining The Delaunay 55 Aldwych, WC2B 4BB www.thedelaunay.com A European cafe-restaurant, offering an extensive choice of dishes, open all week from early morning until late at night.
