Deal for ELV Residents for Backflow Testing
DUNK
TANK
Putnam and Sons plumbing company is offering ELV residents backflow testing for $50, which is a great deal. The usual charge is
around $100. This test is required by the City of Troy.
Most of the testing for residential property will be because you have a lawn sprinkler system. You will also need a backflow test if
you have a water-powered backup sump pump.
Putnam and Sons is described as a reliable company by ELV residents. Call them at 248-652-0990, mention that you live in Emerald
Lakes Village and give them your name, phone number, and address. They will begin scheduling tests the beginning of August and
will call you a week before they will be out to do the test.
Welcome, Neighbors!
Andrea Allemon, Membership Chairwoman
If you are new (or know of
someone new) to Emerald
Lakes Village, please contact me at
[email protected] or 248-879-1111. I
have very important information for you.
Swim Tags/Permits
Please be sure to bring your swim tags to the
neighborhood beaches so the security guard
knows that you are an ELV resident. Residents
can bring non-resident guests with them to the
beaches.
If you would like to host a party at one of the
beach lots you will need a permit to show the
security guard. Please be aware that while you
have permission to host a large number of people
at the beach lot you will not have exclusive use of
the beach lot. Also, no cooking or glass containers
are allowed.
Swim tags and party permits are available from
Andrea Allemon, 1586 Pebble Point,
[email protected], or 248-879-1111.

Recommendation
Kathy Molesa writes: I would like to
recommend my long-time housekeeper,
Delia. She is efficient, dependable and
extremely honest. Call Delia directly for monthly,
bi-monthly or weekly housekeeping services at:
586-850-3050.
Creek & Lakes Report
Tom Kuhn, Lakes Chairman
Creek Action & Lake Treatments
The Homeowners Board approved having LakePro spray the Phragmites on
the creek between 6729 and 6741 Emerald Lake Drive this fall as spraying
over 2 years was recommended for eradication. The vast majority of the
Phragmites have died and based on this year’s excellent results the next
spraying should get rid of the remainder of the Phragmites.
The Board also approved additional treatments for milfoil on Sandshores and
Emerald lakes and different algae treatments on Sandshores Lake.
Lake Water Levels
Lake levels remain low due to the extremely dry conditions in the area for
the last several months. Emerald is up 1” and is flowing into Pebble. The
well pump that adds water to Emerald Lake has been running since May.
Lake Rakes at Neighborhood Beaches
If you happen to be at one of our neighborhood beaches on a day when some
weeds are floating near shore or have washed ashore there are lake rakes
available for you to use to remove the weeds. On Walker Beach the rake is
hidden behind the Arbor vitaes, on Sandshores Beach the rake should be near
the trash can, and the rake for Emerald Beach is in Ken Grand’s (1863 Lyster
Lane right across from the beach ) backyard under the shrubs to the left of
the stairs (Don’t worry. It will be easily seen.). Please return each rake to its
storage location when you are done using it.
We would also be most appreciative if you would put any weeds into the
trash cans once they have dried at least a bit. Thanks for helping to make the
lakes and beaches better!
Fish Survey Update
Thank you to all the fishers who have recorded their catches on the log sheets
at our neighborhood beaches. We are using this information to get an idea of
the number and kind of fish in our lakes to help determine the health of our
lakes. Keep catching and recording! The log sheets should
be located on the signs where treatment notices are posted.
If no log sheet is there or if you catch a fish from the
comfort of your own backyard or lake you can text your
catch info (date, type of fish, length, and lake you caught it
on) to Tom Kuhn at 248-227-2462 or email him at
[email protected]. See if you can top the 22” bass that
Jonathon Miller (pictured at right) caught at Walker Beach.
If you catch any carp like these caught by Steve Gentner,
Charlie Blaeske, Will Hamill, and Dan Dombrowski
measure the carp and then put them in your garden as
fertilizer. Send Tom the length of the carp and which lake
you caught them on. Please release bass back into the lake.
Pull Purple Loosestrife Before it Goes to Seed
Friends and neighbors of Emerald Lakes
Village send their deepest condolences to
the family of Roseanne Lazar. The Lazars
have been ELV residents since 2004.
Purple Loosestrife is an extremely dominant weed that we do
not want on our creeksides or lakesides. It can be identified
by its purple-pink flowering spikes from June to August. It
has willow-like leaves and is 2-5 feet high.
Remove the plants now, before they go to seed. Remove all
of the flowering spikes first by bending them over a plastic
garbage bag and cutting them off into the bag. Pull out the
remainder of the plant by hand or dig out older plants and
place them into the garbage bag and seal it. Remove as much
of the root system as possible, because broken roots may
sprout new plants. Do not put loosestrife in your compost can.
If you have any issues or concerns about the creek or lakes, please contact
Tom Kuhn (cell/text- 248-227-2462; [email protected])

What a difference a year makes. Last summer was cool
and wet, which was great for the grass and plants on all
our courts and cul-de-sacs. This summer we have had
many very hot days and long periods without rain.
There are no sprinkler systems on our courts or cul-desacs and the Homeowners Association does not contract
a company to water the landscaping in these locations. If
you live on a court or cul-de-sac and see any flowers or
shrubs in distress in front of your house please give them
a thorough watering. Thank you.
Megan Marx, Treasurer
Treasurer’s Records and Accounting Reviewed
I have reviewed the records and accounting for the ELV
homeowners’ association for 2015 as prepared by Megan Marx. The
records and financial statements were found to be complete, accurate
and in good order. I did have a few questions for Megan, which she
promptly returned my phone call and answered all of my
questions. She is a very conscientious and fine accountant.
I would like to commend Megan for a great job on her duties as the
treasurer of ELV. We are so fortunate to have a treasurer with her
abilities to donate her time. It’s an extremely time consuming job that
she has taken on with small children in tow. God bless her!
- Sincerely, Sue Beach

Walker Beach “DO Dads”
No, these guys are not trivial ornaments or gadgets
(doodads). These guys are the guys that get the job done
— they’re DO Dads. They have been raking and cleaning
up Walker Beach for everyone to enjoy. “Thank you so
much” Jon Miller, Matt Goodison, Matt Dombrowski,
Matt Horning, Brian Shelson, Dave Mattson, Brandon
Johnson, and Joe Lowry. We who have lived and helped
here in ELV for many years are so happy to see the next
generation of residents stepping up and getting things
done in the village.
More Helpful Residents
Thank you, also, to Ken Grand, Larry Keisling, and other
unknown residents who are taking the beach trash cans
out to the curb on trash day and returning them to the
beach lots. This is a very important contribution to
making our neighborhood beaches enjoyable!
Water Saving Tips
Outdoors
 Mulch around your plants to reduce evaporation and
save hundreds of gallons of water a year.
 Use a higher setting on your lawn mower so the shade
of the longer grass holds soil moisture to roots more
effectively.
 Use shorter watering cycle periods to reduce runoff
and allow for better absorption.
 Use the sprinkler for larger areas of grass and hand
water small patches.
 Only water your lawn when needed. If you leave
footprints when walking on the grass, it’s time.
 Using a hose nozzle and turning off the water while
washing your car can save more than 100 gallons. Also
use a non-phosphorous soap and wash your car on your
lawn — it will be good for the lawn and good to be
kept out of our lake water.
Indoors
 Using a low-flow showerhead can save your family
more than 500 gallons a week. If your shower fills a 1gallon bucket in less than 20 seconds it is not a waterefficient showerhead.
 Make sure there are aerators on all your faucets.
 Turn off the water while you shave, brush your teeth or
lather your hands.
 Insulate hot water pipes.
Neighborly Notes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
 ELV has a great many people who jog, walk, and ride
their bikes on our sidewalks. Please be a good
neighbor and do not block the sidewalk with your car.
 Have you received a package that you don’t remember
ordering? Perhaps you have Nancy Wenzel’s cell
phone cover that UPS says they have delivered. If so,
please call Nancy at 248-879-9034.
 Not only did George and Elizabeth Telfer put on a
beautiful fireworks display enjoyed by many
neighbors, the next day they picked up everyone’s
fireworks debris out of Walker Lake. Thank you for
being excellent custodians of Walker Lake. You are
greatly appreciated!
Garage Sale Results
Garage sale gurus Nancy Wenzel and Darlene Mehrer
report that 46 garages participated in our subdivisionwide garage sale this year; many that were combined
sales of 2 or more families. As always, in addition to
good deals throughout the village, there was a lot of
good visiting! Three Lakes was a hotbed of activity with
8 garages open and Emerald Lake Drive had its share of
sellers with 10 garages open. On behalf of the Board and
all our residents, “thank you” to Nancy and Darlene for
doing such an excellent job of promoting and organizing
the Garage Sale and for agreeing to do it again next year!
Improvements at Walker Beach
In our continuing quest to refresh the landscaping at
Walker Beach select pine trees have been trimmed up or
removed and maple trees have been trimmed up.
New landscaping around the Walker Beach sign and the
water meter doghouse has been approved and is
scheduled for fall planting.
Improvements to the beach area are still under
consideration.
It’s a Beautiful Thing
Beautiful things can
happen when neighbors
communicate their
landscaping ideas to each
other. For example, two
creekside women with a
love of gardening have
created a gorgeous side
garden between their
homes that they both
can enjoy.
The literal and figurative
beauty of Emerald Lakes Village are its open and expansive views
whether you live on a lake or not. You don’t have to be a master
gardener in your own yard because you can see and enjoy the
landscaping of many yards around you.
When planning any landscaping or outdoor construction you should
(1) consider how this affects your neighbor — think “Golder Rule”
(2) if your idea will affect your neighbors’ view, have a conversation
with your neighbors and outline your ideas, (3) read the ELVHA
Restrictions Agreement, and (4) submit you plan to Restrictions
Chairman Jay Reynolds, 248-828-3647, or [email protected] for
approval. It is so much better to receive approval from the ELVHA
Board than to be in violation of the Restrictions Agreement and have
to remove something.
We understand that some residents would like some privacy in their
yards and may want to landscape or do some construction in that
regard and that is within their rights, within the boundaries of our
Restrictions Agreement. Consider ways to do this without walling off
your yard. Have a conversation with your neighbors, let them know
what you’re thinking. They may have some ideas that would be
beneficial to the both of you just like our two creekside gardeners
who have created not only a beautiful garden, but a friendship, too.
Here in Emerald Lakes Village good communication makes for
good neighbors.
Community Spirit . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
