BR-1600CD
16-track Digital Workstation with COSM Modeling and Eight XLR Inputs
The BOSS BR-1600CD is a complete 16-track digital recording studio, giving you all the sonic
power of a computer-based setup, but with the added portability and reduced cost factor of going
computer free. You can record up to eight tracks simultaneously via the BR-1600’s eight XLR
mic preamps or eight TRS inputs, and you can take advantage of built-in COSM effects, such as
compression, amp modeling, EQ, bass-cut, vocal pitch correction, and more. Plus, there are 256
virtual tracks you can use for recording or backing tracks. An internal 80GB hard drive holds onto
your content, and you can burn completed projects using the onboard CD burner. What’s more,
you can connect your BR-1600CD to your computer via USB, for when you want to take your
mobile recordings into your computer for further DAW-based editing. The BR-1600CD’s intuitive
layout makes it easy to mix your tracks and control transport functions. Twelve faders plus a
master fader give you tactile control, and a bright LCD display helps you navigate menus and keep

30 Years of Portastudio Recording
It’s been 30 years since TASCAM invented
home recording with the Portastudio™ 144,
a 4-track cassette recorder with built-in
mixing. Since then, Portastudios have
been used by songwriters and musicians,
as well as even on a few classic albums
along the way. Today’s Portastudios retain
the simple, fun interface of the originals
while updating the sound to CD-quality
digital recording.
The portable DP-004 is a 4-track recorder
that’s smaller than a VHS tape. It records
through a pair of 1/4" mic inputs or with
a pair of built-in mics. Build up your arrangement, mix it to a dedicated stereo
track, then transfer it to a computer over
USB 2.0.
The DP-02 is an 8-track Portastudio that
records to a 40GB hard drive. It keeps the
mixing interface easy, with knobs instead
of menus. A pair of effects processors and
a CD burner facilitate polished mixes.
Also available, the DP-02CF records to
CompactFlash cards, for a lower price.
TASCAM’s 2488neo is the latest generation of the 24-track, 24-bit Portastudio.
Eight mic inputs make it perfect for
recording a small band, and new mastering effects get your mixes radio ready.

WHY YOU MUST BUY A
PORTABLE RECORDER
By Danielle Teagarden
T
hat’s right; we said it. Today’s portable recorders are just too slick, too handy, too awesome
sounding, and too affordable. No matter your
interest in music and audio, you’ve just got to
have one. However, ProGear reader, consider yourself
warned: as we set out to back up that claim with serious evidential value, odds are that reading further will
result in a feeling of creative possibility, directly followed by a phone call to your Sales Engineer or a visit
to Sweetwater’s Exclusive Guide to Portable Recorders
(http://www.sweetwater.com/feature/recorders/) — all
with the aim of pinpointing which handheld wonder is
right for you and your music. And, trust us, one is.
So, with that said, let’s get to the rubber-meeting-theroad part, as we dig in and take a look at the ways
you’ll use your new portable friend.
Songwriters and Solo Musicians:
Get Creative Anytime, Anywhere
All music depends on time — that’s fact. But, for the singer/songwriter
and all-out creative individual, this concept takes on a slightly different
meaning. That’s because song ideas, those pesky creatures, come at
unpredictable moments — and almost never when we’re in the studio,
with the microphones up and the tracks record-armed.
The trick, then, is to find a way to harness those ideas as they arrive
— in the car, on your lunch break, even in the shower — then develop
them at more convenient times. But, while you can safely preserve
lyrics by jotting them down on paper, should you forget a melody or a
rhythm, it’s gone. Musicians have long-tried to conquer this apparent dilemma. We’ve heard of artists calling their home answering
machines, filling them up with message after message of whistling
melodies, lo-fi renditions of potential hit choruses, and desperate
attempts of beatboxing in rhythms. Today, though, a lightweight
microphone-equipped recorder will capture it all. Best yet, you can
keep those ideas with you all day, to play back, to harmonize with, then
to play along to whenever you get home to your instrument of choice.
Of course, portable recorders are also just as useful when you’re in the
zone, playing your instrument — or out at the gig performing those
songs you thankfully captured with it. Since most of these devices
have speakers built into them, you can track a potential rhythm part on
guitar, for example, then instantly work on developing vocal melodies
or building guitar parts over the top of it. Beyond that, since most
recorders mount easily to mic stands or included tripod stands, you
can set one up at your next coffeehouse gig to hear how you sounded.
Then, you can share the live set with friends, build a pitchable demo, or
post the tunes online for the world to hear. It’s fast, easy, and the sound
quality is surprisingly impeccable.
Music Teachers:
Seize New Ways to Reach Your Students
You’re passionate about music. And whether you’re a school
band or choir teacher or a music shop lesson giver, you want
to pass that passion on to your students — using the most fun
and effective methods possible. Fortunately, with a portable
recorder, there are a bunch of innovative ways to do just that.
Teaching lessons? Simply set up the recorder in the room —
either on a stand, or, if you have a desktop-type recorder, on a
table — then record the lesson from start to finish. Since nearly
all recorders capture audio to reusable SD or CompactFlash
cards (some can capture straight to CDs), students can pop
in their own cards to take home. Or, you can connect the
recorder to your computer via USB, drag-and-drop the file
to your desktop, and e-mail the file to your students. It’s no
problem. Even cooler, though, is the fact that many recorders
have other lesson-oriented tools built into them. You can load
popular songs and create a quick loop, so students can practice
188-189_101_Mobile Recording.indd 188
6/16/09 10:14:56 AM
SWEETWATER’S ESSENTIAL GUIDES
a part over and over again. You can also use onboard pitch and
speed controls to slow a loop down to comfortable practice speeds
or to switch the key of the song — maybe to fit a student’s range
or to develop transposition skills. You may also want to capture a
particular chord progression, then have a student practice soloing
over the top of it.
Classroom-based teachers will find additional applications for their
recorders. One real use is to capture band or choir practice, then
target attention-needing areas later. You can also set up the recorder
during sectionals or auditions so that you can listen back as you
make decisions — maybe play one student’s audition alongside
another student’s audition, to compare tone or to determine how two
voices will blend together. Last, when students need backing tracks
to rehearse to for solo competitions or auditions, you can easily set
the recorder in front of your piano, play, then e-mail the file within a
few minutes.
Churches:
Prepare Effectively and Connect with the
Congregation
No matter the size of your worship services, having a portable
recorder — or three — will give your church a mine of possibilities
to explore. To start, portable recorders are an enormously valuable
tool for service preparation. With a recorder in hand, the worship
leader can practice sermons, then listen back to gauge how
effectively the message comes through. The choir and band, too, will
find the recorder useful, as they rehearse together at the church,
then practice at home with their newly recorded tracks.
Recorders are equally — if not more — valuable, though, for capturing services from week to week. You can discreetly place it by the
mixing board, or you can capture speech up at the podium. Either
way, it gives you the ability to review services — but more than that,
it helps you to make the recordings available to the congregation.
Since you can almost instantly transfer tracks to your computer, it’s
easy to post them online or to make a copy for those who couldn’t
attend the service. You can also put together a CD of inspiring messages — or maybe the children’s choir performances — as a part of
your church’s next fundraising project. Whatever you end up doing,
having these shared experiences readily available is a neat way to
unify your congregational community — and to preserve amazing
moments as your church services continue to progress.
Sound Guys and Gals:
Capture Better-than-board-feed Recordings and
Expand Your Client Roster
Okay, so you’ve got your own killer system, or you’re riding faders
on the club’s board, but you’ve been asked to record the show
— now what? A mobile recording system may be awesome, but
sometimes investing in (and hauling in) a laptop and a big-enough
interface system can be overkill for what you’re looking to do.
True, you can snag a stereo feed off of the board and pipe it into a
CD burner. But, those mixes don’t always sound “right,” and they
definitely don’t give you the same out-in-the-crowd “experience.”
What’s the solution? As you might’ve guessed, a portable recorder
will do just the trick — with finesse, to boot.
A recorder’s onboard microphones often have variable pickup
patterns, so you can nail the right sound when you capture the gig.
Plus, options such as limiting controls, built-in processing, and basic
editing features can help you to develop an incredible-sounding
“product” — without ever calling a computer into service. Of course,
once you do connect the recorder to your computer, you can bring
tracks into an audio editing program and craft a fully mastered CD.
of course). That way, you can give inquiring clients a basic mix
demo, to secure the potential job. Second, you can make live recordings a bonus part of your services, for can’t-beat value — is anyone
else doing that in your town? In addition, when you’re looking to
get a mixing gig at another club, it won’t hurt to have an on-hand
example or two of your work. At the end of the night, all things
considered, you’ll be amazed at how easy the recording process
was and how great the recordings (i.e., your mixes) turned out.
Bands:
Never Lose Another Brilliant Moment — Get Ideas
Down Without the Recording Fuss
Those in bands surely know what it’s like to jam on a new idea and
suddenly have everyone just “gel.” For a minute there, you’ve got
something new, something great. But, when you try to re-create it,
the parts aren’t all there. What was that one bit in the middle? What
was that lead? No one remembers.
It’s time to pocket these moments of genius.
Try setting up a portable recorder in the middle of your practice
space; configure it for 360-degree recording; and go on about your
rehearsal. In fact, if your recorder has a remote control, then you can
create file markers between jams, start and stop recordings, and
play back riffs — without ever leaving your pedalboard. After the
practice, you can archive ideas for later on, or you can e-mail the
shining moments to everyone in the group.
Of course, if you nail a track, then you’ve got an instant (and
cost-effective!) recording to post to your MySpace page. That’ll
come in handy for recruiting potential band members, for giving
fans a new-song teaser, or for securing a great gig. After all, this is
how you sound live — no studio overdubs, no processing — and
there’s merit in that. Though, should you want to snag a studio-style
recording, some recorders even offer onboard overdubs or the
capability to record four tracks at once — just mic the drum kit with
built-in stereo mics, mic the guitar amp, plug the bass in direct, and
rock out. Done.
The Wrap Up
All in all, there’s good reason why portable recorders are the
hottest gadgets out there right now: they’re just handy. And with
the musical applications we’ve covered — extending to potential
creative sampling adventures, podcast-interview endeavors, and
beyond — you’ll keep finding new ways to use
your own pocket-sized
pal. But, remember, you
were warned. We’ll hold
no liability if curiosity
takes over and you
find yourself recording
GB after GB of random
noises, just because you
can; or if you turn all
mad scientist and craft
a holster-type system to
record everything that
happens to you, all the
time; or, if you peeve your
(once-)significant other by
furnishing proof of his/her
thunderous snoring… you
get the idea. Pick one up;
you won’t regret it.
Happy recording!
We’ll note that many marketing-savvy audio dudes and dudettes
may wish to pull a few more tricks with these newly recorded
tracks. First, it’ll be easy to create a webpage for your live services
and post a few of the tracks online (with permission from the bands,

The Sound Devices 302 field mixer gives you incredible
sound quality in a portable package. It’s especially
effective for highly mobile video and film production. The
302’s flexible inputs let you connect to practically any
professional mic, camera, or wireless system, and features
such as stereo and M-S (mid-side) linking (channel 1

highpass filter, and limiters on inputs and outputs make
it essential for the pro’s tool box. Add a rugged CS3 case
for more protection.
This studio-quality 2-channel preamp/mixer just
happens to be packaged in a durable 1.7" x 3.7" x 5.5"
aluminum box, giving you one of the most compact
pro-level units around. The MixPre offers two phantompowered mic inputs, complete with highpass filters and
“unclippable” peak limiters, as well as pan switches,
a 1kHz tone oscillator, and a slate mic. The MixPre is
powered via two AA batteries or via external DC. For field

provides shock protection and insulation.
Field production relies on well-designed equipment that’s
lightweight enough to go anywhere, yet able to provide
the best sound quality possible. The 442 mixer certainly
fits the bill, with four phantom-powered XLR inputs and
a range of direct ins and outs for all sorts of applications.
This compact mixer includes a mid-side stereo matrix for
great stereo sound capture, as well as two independent

MR-2000S
1-bit Rackmount Recorder with 80GB Hard Drive
Korg broke new ground when they introduced 1-bit recording technology in a portable form factor, with the extremely
popular MR-1 handheld recorder. If you seek that same level of quality, in a rugged rackmountable device — with
an array of I/O options — the MR-2000S is for you. This studio-grade recorder offers up an 80GB hard drive; USB
connectivity; and connections via RCA, XLR, and S/PDIF. The MR-2000S features a 1-bit/5.6MHz resolution, for superb
performance — above and beyond the 1-bit/2.8224MHz Super Audio CD format. This kind of high-resolution capture
is a great way to master your material, so you can re-create it natively in the future, in whatever format you need. Plus,
you can chain up to four units together, for an excellent multitrack recording setup. A premium Cirrus Logic CS4298
D/A converter and a first-rate Texas Instruments Burr-Brown PCM4202 A/D converter are onboard the unit, and it
supports recording in 16-bit and 24-bit Broadcast WAV formats. The MR-2000S comes complete with Korg’s AudioGate

MasterLink
24-bit High-resolution Master CD Recorder
The Alesis MasterLink is an essential tool for studios,
mastering houses, and post facilities — and it even fares
well as a potent live recording tool. The MasterLink has a
built-in 40GB hard drive that can hold nearly 450 minutes
of detailed 24-bit/96kHz audio or 1,800 minutes at standard
16-bit/44.1kHz. There’s no data compression when you record to the MasterLink, plus it can perform 12 different sample-rate and bit-depth conversions on any data you send its way.
Mastering tools are right onboard this powerhouse, via its 32-bit SHARC DSP chip. These tools include professional noise shaping, EQ, normalization, peak limiting, compression, and
full fade. Perhaps the most impressive MasterLink feature, though, is its CD-burning functionality. The built-in burner can pump out Red Book-standard CDs, and it can even burn a
