45° angles to form a “V” groove. Slip
the insulation into place. Treat small
diameter piping as wiring.

of the wire. Cut it to approximately half
the thickness. Fold the batt back and fit
the wire into the opening. Push the batt
into place.
Measure the electrical box and carve

Roxul ComfortBoard IS is a rigid stone wool insulation
board fastened to the outside face of the exterior
studs used in residential construction and designed
to provide increased thermal performance to the
building envelope.
As building trends move towards higher density
communities, it’s time to start thinking about improving
acoustics on exterior walls – planes, trains and
automobiles all contribute to noisier living space and
with a Roxul stone wool wall system, that noise can
be significantly reduced.
The stone wool-based insulation is made from
natural stone and 75% recycled content, which gives
it thermal and fire-resistant properties that other
insulations can’t match.
Compared to other types of insulation, the stone
wool content of BEDR™ wall systems provides
increased density and effectively reduces airflow
and, essentially, sound transmission.
DIMENSIONAL STABILITY
Thermal expansion co-efficients express the rate at
which materials shrink or expand when cooled or
heated. Made from stone wool, Roxul ComfortBoard
IS insulation has a smaller thermal expansion
coefficient than insulation materials such as foam
plastics.
Roxul raises the bar in developing wall systems
with excellent long-term thermal performance.
This is the result of two inherent properties in its
BEDR™ insulating systems – lack of thermal loss
due to dimensional changes, and product that is not
produced with blowing agents, which can off-gas and
result in lower long-term thermal performance.
As well, the use of Roxul ComfortBoard IS in
conjunction with ComfortBatt in the wall cavity
contributes to a higher effective R-value wall system,
increasing the performanceof the residential building
envelope.

barrier against sound while reducing reverberation.
To give an idea of the effectiveness of Sonopan™
panels, a loud discussion has an STC (sound
transmission coefficient) equivalent to 55 decibels.
With Sonopan™ no noise can be heard outside a
room in which such a loud debate is being held. With
a high FIIC resisting sound levels of up to 56 decibels,
Sonopan™ is recommended for better efficiency.
Sonopan X® clearly reduces impact and airborne
noise in flooring systems. With their unique density
and surface cells, they form a banner that absorbs
the sound, while reducing reverberation.
With an FIIC (impact noise isolation index) between
56 and 62, depending on the type of assembly,
Sonopan X® is more effective than other systems. For

The results obtained for assemblies on the floor
are excellent in terms of attenuation, with an FIIC
(impact noise isolation index) between 57 and 67,
depending on the type of assembly. For the purposes
of comparison, a 9-inch thick concrete slab used with
no finish other than rough plaster on the ceiling has
an FIIC of between 33 and 39 in accordance with
ASTM standards.
The high recycled material content in Sonobase II

TWO LAMINATION TECHNIQUES
Bamboo stems are first cut into long, thin strips,
boiled in water for two hours, then kiln-dried. The

Superior Stability and Durability!
1. Acclimate the boards to ambient temperature
over 24 to 48 hours.
2. Ensure that the subfloor surface is sound, dry,
solid, adequately fixed and level.
3. Test for humidity. A major difference in humidity
between the subfloor and Ulay will damage your
floor.
7. Nail or staple Ulay boards at intervals of 3”
along the edges [at 10-15 mm (3/8”) from the
edge] and at intervals of 4” along the centre line.
Never use screws.
8. In order to obtain better stability, use PVA glue
before putting the Ulay in place on the subfloor
with nails or staples.
9. Ventilate crawl spaces and provide them with a
vapour seal (minimum height of 18”).
DURING INSTALLATION

4. Keep the boards clean and dry.
5. Break the joints by laying the boards at right
angles versus the subfloor.
6. Join lightly the boards end to end and leave a
minimum space of 3/8” between the Ulay boards
and the edge of the walls while around the

Three independent studies showed that Dura-Son
offers acoustic absorption superior to the competition.
According to the tests, Dura-Son’s 3.5-mm reinforced
rubber has an FIIC of 65, whereas having 2 mm of
urethane foam or 5 mm of felt, hard rubber or cork
provides a lower FIIC.
For hardwood floors, the Canada Mortgage and
Housing Corporation (CMHC) recommends a FIIC of
55. A higher FIIC means better sound absorption.
