Proofing
Passive fire protection (PFP) is critical to loss prevention in the event of a fire or explosion
and fire incident on an offshore structure.
Design, selection and specification of PFP, as part of the project process, is key to long term

Limiting Steel Temperature
The limiting temperature to be considered for various scopes in a project will vary depending
on how onerous the fire scenario is in each case –
Typical on-shore Installations – 500 to 600 deg C
Typical Off shore Oil & Gas structures – 400 deg C
Typically for Vessels & Spheres – 300 or 427 deg C
Risers – typically 200 deg C

materials swell or ‘intumesce’ in a fire
providing an insulating durable char layer
that slows the temperature rise of the steel
substrate
 Unprotected steel experiences a rapid

Historical Way of Fire Protection
Collapsed sphere due to corrosion
under cementitious PFP.
 Potential for corrosion underneath these
products
• leads to a weakening of the steel
• when severe, lead to cracking of the fire
protection due to the swelling of the
corrosion product.
 This is one reason why a number of major
operators now require that steel is hot dip
galvanised if it is to receive cementitious fire
protection.
