Click here Volume 1, Issue 5 AUTOMATIC!!! ·································· Win This Boxster Beautifully equipped with the latest features such as the 7 speed PDK Automatic/Manual Transmission. Porsche says that the PDK gearbox is actually two transmissions in one. The flow of power from the engine is transmitted through one half gearbox and one clutch at a time, while the next gear is preselected in the second half gearbox. During a gear change a conventional shift no longer takes place. Instead, one clutch simply opens and the other closes at the same time. Gear changes can therefore take place within milliseconds. The benefit is a faster and much more fuel efficient automobile. In manual mode, the sport steering wheel features two switches. One press with the thumb and the PDK shifts up. One pull with the index finger and the PDK shifts down. Either the right or left hand can be used. July 12, 2011 Thank You!!! Drag racing history will come to life Friday, July 15-Saturday, July 16, when the Keeneland Concours d’Elegance features a class of classic drag race cars. Two of the cars from this group will be displayed at two area car dealerships on Friday. Those cars and nine other classic drag racers will be the featured race class at Saturday’s Keeneland Concours d’Elegance at Keeneland. These “factory hot rods” from the ‘60s show the evolution from stock cars to funny cars. The Raffle drawing will be held at 4:00 PM on Hank Gabbert’s ‘63 Chevy Impala Z11 Super Stock racer will be Saturday, July 16th ( two Weeks) at the annual displayed at Southerland Chevrolet in Nicholasville Friday from 11 AM to 1 PM. Jim Kramer will have his ‘65 Dodge Coronet, known as The Keeneland Concours. event. Honker, at Freedom Dodge in Lexington Friday from 1 PM to 4 PM. The public is invited to see and take photos of these race cars. It was also sponsored by Sox Sinclair Service, owned by Ronnie Sox’s father. The best the car ran the quarter mile was 10.80s at 136 mph. The car was garaged in Burlington, NC, where Larry and Ronnie lived. Since Ronnie had his own Z 11 Chevy, The Sox and Martin car, and raced it under NHRA rules they made the Impala a match race car. Larry Wilson was the primary driver but there were times when Ronnie Sox would race the car. Gabbert stays in touch with the former drivers, who are glad the car was found and restored to racing condition with all the lettering as it appeared in its racing days. Accompanying Gabbert and his Z-11 to Lexington for the concours will be legendary southern match-bash star Hubert Platt. Driving his famous Georgia Shaker cars, Platt was one of the more interesting racers to come out of the mid-60s. He was one of the best four speed men in the country and was every bit the competitor as Ronnie Sox and others of his ilk. He tasted the sweetness of a factory deal in the early 1960s with Chevrolet. It was then that the legend of the Georgia Shaker name was born. The first was actually another 1963 Z-11 Chevy. Platt’s name is linked to Fords and that makes sense because after the Z-11 it was all blue ovals. Good Ole Mr. Wilson Southerland Chevrolet Friday, July 15 - 11 - 1 The Honker Freedom Dodge Friday, July 15 - 2 - 4 Keeneland Tours Gift Shop Discount In 1964 he would run a Ford Thunderbolt and his name would appear frequently in the pages or regional and national drag racing publications. When Ford built a few Falcons with SOHC engines in them for the exploding A/FX class, Platt naturally requested one. He was denied, but not defeated. Platt proceeded to build his own A/FX car in the basement of his house. The legend goes that his working space was so confined that he actually had to roll the car outside for assembly. Originally built with a stock wheelbase machine, Platt later moved the rear axle forward to complete the AWB look that was so popular in this era. Jim Kramer’s Honker Coronet is one of six built by Dodge and sold to professional racers for $1 each to be campaigned as ‘factory experimental’ racers. Bud Faubel, the original owner, drove it in white from Detroit to Chambersburg, PA, to break in the driveline for the 1965 race season. Soon after, this car won the AHRA Winter Nationals, becoming the first ‘funny car’ title holder and was picked in Super Stock Magazine’s Top 10 that year. These cars were the famous HEMI cars that dominated drag racing in the mid-60s. They were called “Funny Cars” because of the funny look created by moving huge rear tires forward to develop greater traction. These cars, along with nine other classic drag racers from the 60s, will be one of the featured race classes at Saturday’s Keeneland Concours d’Elegance at Keeneland. The Concours is a highly respected concours attracting America’s top quality collector cars from all vintages and types. Also featured this year will be the U.S. Alfa Romeo Owners Club 2011 National Convention and hundreds of Alfas. They will be shoulder to shoulder with the concours on the Keeneland grounds alongside the Keeneland Concours. Other classes in the Keeneland Concours d’Elegance are antiques through 1924, trucks from 1939 and earlier, coach-built classics, military vehicles and three classes of motorcycles. The gates open at 9 AM and tickets are $15 each. The Keeneland Concours d’Elegance benefits the Kentucky Children’s Hospital. In this bed the baby is isolated from germs, cold and drafts but is still at an increased risk of lasting disabilities, such as mental retardation, learning and behavioral problems, cerebral palsy, lung problems and vision and hearing loss. With these children and their many challenges in mind, the organizers of the Keeneland Concours created an endowment at Kentucky Children's Hospital for newborn research in 2006. Some of the endowment research that has taken place looks at brain hemorrhages, respiratory problems, chronic lung disease, natural maturation of the rhythm of sucking, swallowing, and breathing in premature infants with lung problems. http://ukhealthcare.uky.edu/KCH/ Come join us at the Hangar Bash after the show on Saturday for an evening filled with Latino music and dance, food, fashion, Vintage airplanes and exotic cars.
