Eurogroup approves 6th
tranche of bailout loan to
Greece
BRUSSELS (AMNA/M.
Aroni) – The Eurogroup approved
disbursement of an 8 billion euros
6th tranche of the 110 billion euro
EU-IMF bailout loan to Greece,
Eurogroup president Jean-Claude
Juncker announced in Brussels after
a meeting of the group.
“We decided to release the sixth
disbursement of the Greek program
now that prior actions have been
met,” Juncker told reporters after a
meeting of the finance ministers of
the 17 eurozone member countries.
Juncker said that the letters
received by the Eurogroup from
the leaders of the three political
parties backing the new national
unity government in Greece
and also from transitional prime
minister Lucas Papademos fully
satisfied the Eurogroup demand
for written commitments on
the implementation of the
Memorandum and the decisions
of the October 26-27 eurozone
summit.
The Eurogroup chief also said
that he will personally send a letter
to Papademos stating his satisfaction
with the Greek government’s
commitment to materialize the
October 26 decisions.
He also said that the
disbursement will take place after
the International Monetary Fund
(IMF) approves its part of the
tranche.
Juncker further appealed to the
Greek authorities to speed up talks
with Greece’s private creditors on

Education minister proposes
that EU debt-crisis countries
cooperate to promote
research
Greece’s Education Minister
Anna Diamantopoulou
announced that she has sent letters
to her counterparts in four other
EU countries caught up in the
debt crisis, proposing a framework
of cooperation and joint action to
promote research and innovation.
In the letters to her
counterparts in Spain,
Italy, Portugal and Ireland,
Diamatopoulou notes the
negative impact of the fiscal
crisis on research and innovation
and the knock-on repercussions
that their degradation will have
on the competitiveness and
growth prospects of the countries
involved.
She proposes that research
centers in all five of the countries
worst hit by the EU debt crisis
should cooperate and that there
be increased mobility of young
researchers in the framework of
the Horizon 2020 program in
order to attract funds for research
and create conditions that will
allow postgraduate students to
stay in Europe, as well as making
use of European Central Bank
investment programs.
Diamantopoulou calls for
the creation of a special working
group that will process and submit
specific policies for this purpose.

he Holiday celebrations
got off to a beautiful start
last month with the 14th
annual Musicfest at St. Sofia’s
Cathedral. Under the supervision
of director Jim H. Kollias, the
Saint Sophia Cathedral Choir
together with director Antonio
Espinal and the Harmonies of
Saint Thomas All Girls Choir
treated a capacity audience to
a well balanced and satisfying
program of religious and spiritual
song for the Christmas season.
The reception following the
concert was in the Fellowship
Tent. Ted Pastras reports that
the construction of the new
community center is expected to
be completed around
the end of January.
Some additional weeks
will be needed for the
finishing touches on
the interior and to get a
final sign-off from the
various city inspectors. More with choir
director Jim Kollias in the
next issue of the HJ.

When you get materialistic, you
get cynical. When you get cynical,
you close things down. You only

Trungpa does is open it up so

You’re not holding yourself down

The Philoptochos Chapter
of St. Sophia in Los Angeles
recently enjoyed its annual
Thanksgiving luncheon at the
Wilson Harding Clubhouse in
Griffith Park, celebrating its many
accomplishments achieved during
the past year.
In addition to the Debutante
Ball and Mother’s Day luncheon
fundraisers, Philoptochos has
helped numerous families in need.
It recently partnered with the Los
Angeles Mission to help in the
winter season, serving breakfast to
the homeless every morning.
The chapter is also working in
concert with the local area “Salvin
School” which serves children who
are severely physically and mentally
challenged. Each year they assist
the school in purchasing food
for 74 low-income families that
need help at Christmas time. One
project was collecting ‘cuddling’
stuffed animals to give to siblings
of the disabled students who
are frequently overlooked in the
holiday season.
The chapter has also adopted
four families too poor to buy
presents. An “Angel tree” was
placed in the Narthex with wishlist items for the children (and
their parents).With the help of
the Saint Sophia community,
the chapter purchased gifts, and
provided each family with a
$100 food card which brought a
Christmas dinner to the table.
