Box 37, 100 Newport Drive Port Moody, B.C. V3H 3E1 604-469-4575 www.library.portmoody.ca Message from the Mayor People are using the library now more than ever. It is a welcoming and friendly place where our community can come together...to grow, learn and build connections. I am proud of our library and the opportunities that it offers for people of all ages. On behalf of the City of Port Moody and all members of Council, I extend thanks to the Library Board and staff, and to all those who support and participate in our excellent library system. Joe Trasolini, Mayor Message from the Board Chair 2009 was a year of change and challenges for Port Moody Public Library. The economic downturn meant that planning for a new, larger library facility was halted. Our provincial grants were also threatened with elimination, however thanks to public support of a province-wide ‘Stop the Cuts to BC’s Public Libraries” campaign, libraries received 78% of the anticipated funding. Business continued to boom with a 5% increase in loans and a 7% increase in visits. Port Moody residents rediscovered the library as a place to borrow books, DVDs and other materials, and to search for jobs, learn new skills, access the Internet and use computer technology – all free of charge. The 2009 Links to Literacy Golf Tournament was another great success. Special thanks are due to our team of community volunteers, led once again by Barbara Nuttall, for their hard work and for their commitment to this initiative. At the beginning of the year, the Library Board was increased in size from nine to eleven members. New trustees Susan Croll, Gray Giovannetti, Linda Martin, Barbara Nuttall and Cynthia van Ginkel joined the Board. In March, Lynne Russell returned to Port Moody as Director of Library Services. Finally, 2009 marked my eighth and final year as a library trustee, and my last year as Board Chair. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the City of Port Moody for its ongoing support for the Library, and to thank fellow Board members and staff for their dedication to providing outstanding library service. Don Logie, Library Board Chair (2007-2009) Your Library in 2009 Making a difference Supporting City of the Arts Free programs and services that touch the lives of children and adults, such as Toddler Storytime, continued to be an everyday occurrence. Highlights A record-breaking 1515 children participated in the 2009 Summer Reading Club taking up the challenge to “Follow the Reader” and read for more than 50 days. Throughout the year, storytimes and special programs introduced younger children, their parents and educators to a world of rhymes, songs, games and books – and helped build strong literacy skills from an early age. Staff connected with community partners to offer conversation circles, ESL courses, and displays on topics such as homelessness. We joined tri-city libraries, School District 43, the Tri-Cities Early Childhood Education Committee, S.H.A.R.E. and other groups in a variety of programs - Battle of the Books, the Tri-Cities Spelling Bee, Family Learn & Play Nights, the Random Acts of Kindness Project as well as Ready Set Learn and Welcome to Kindergarten events in schools. Reaching out to the community Monthly displays by local artists are just one of the ways we supported the development of arts and culture in our community. A new Links to Literacy workstation for adults with developmental challenges was funded by proceeds from our annual golf tournament. Mike Clay (Council Representative); Peter Belanger; Cynthia van Ginkel; Linda Martin; Susan Croll 2009 Port Moody Public Library Board Thanks to the dedicated work of the Golf Committee and generous support from community sponsors, the 9th Annual Links to Literacy Golf Tournament raised nearly $25,000 for special projects like the Read Today, Lead Tomorrow speaker series. This inspiring series aimed at educators and parents was attended by more than 500 people; speakers included Terry Small, Dr. Gabor Mate, David Bouchard and Fiona Morrison. The library hosted authors who shared their view of the world and the art of writing. The works of local artists were showcased on library walls and in display units. Four book clubs were supported including one for kids and another for talking book patrons and friends. We continued to optimize the use of our existing space with enhancements to display furnishings, meeting space and the study area adjacent to the Information Desk. Email notification was introduced as an easy and convenient way to receive library communications about reserved and overdue items.
