It offers a world of discovery for the young child learning to read, the new resident getting established in our community or the senior being introduced to new technologies. On behalf of the City of Port Moody and all members of Council, I extend thanks to the Library Board and staff for a job well done. Joe Trasolini, Mayor Message from the Board Chair The Port Moody Public Library is fast becoming a hub of the City of the Arts and one of its most popular facilities. There were over 320,000 in-person visits to the library in 2010 for an average of 90 visits per open hour. We are a place where the community can come together and where all are welcome -- from babies to seniors and everyone in between. The library is much more than just a building filled with books. We provide free access to computers and the Internet; and our new e-literacy programs help citizens learn to navigate the online world of information. Our e-library allows customers to access and download the latest books, magazines, and newspapers online at anytime. Reaching beyond its walls, the library delivers early childhood literacy programs and services where they are needed, most often in partnership with schools and other agencies. Few other public institutions offer so much for free at a time when so many are looking for extra value. None of this would be possible without the financial support of the City of Port Moody and the Province of British Columbia, the tireless effort of our Links to Literacy Golf Committee (which raised more than $28,000 to support special library literacy initiatives in 2010), the generosity of our donors, our dedicated library trustees and staff, and our loyal customers. This is my final year on the Library Board. It has been a pleasure to serve as a library trustee for the last 8 years and as library board chair for 2010. I have seen the library grow tremendously during this period and look forward to its future successes. Rosemary Rawnsley, Library Board Chair 2010 • Library open hours increased with the introduction of Sunday openings on long weekends. • The Links to Literacy Golf Tournament celebrated its 10th anniversary with another successful event. Resources • The teen graphic novel collection was expanded thanks to funding from Links to Literacy. • Our e-library of more than 16,000 eBook and eAudio titles increased in popularity. Press Display, Learning Express Library and Career Cruising databases were added to this collection. • We started lending energy meters – a collaboration with the City of Port Moody’s ‘Green Team’. Programs • 1,500 children discovered that “Reading Rocks” when they joined the Summer Reading Club. Preschool storytimes, Reading Buddies and other programs continued to help kids build literacy skills. • Our portable e-training lab, another Links to Literacy initiative, went ‘live’ in September enabling us to start offering hands-on information skills workshops for adults. Feedback was excellent and all classes were full. • The Canadian Books, eh? contest polled residents for their favourite Canadian title. The winner: The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill. Community Connections • We collaborated with School District 43 for events such as Ready Set Learn, Welcome to Kindergarten, Battle of the Books and Literrific. • We joined other libraries for the Tri-City Spelling Bee, the Tri-City Scary Story contest and the Good Reads column. • Regular English practice groups were hosted in partnership with SD43 and SHARE. Digital resources “We love using Libraryto-go. The whole family enjoys audiobooks.” - Customer comment Information skills workshops “User friendly, free and therefore affordable. Helping people in the community get ‘literate’.” - Customer comment Summer Reading Club “My daughter improved so much in her reading. What a valuable program.” - Customer comment Links to Literacy Ten in 2010 Our popular annual tournament has raised more than $194,000 since 2001 to support library literacy initiatives.
