SKRYF
Skryf the sand writer moves forward,
Leaving a stream of letters behind him.
Skryf refers to the fact that everything is transitory.
An almost irrelevant pile of sand creates the magic of the word.
Human beings, nature and the passage of time are responsible for the
disintegration of the word again.
Sometimes very quickly, sometimes very slow.
Like sand through your fingers .....

SKRYF
Skryf writes with sand text on the ground. Out of a small manipulated opening the sand is flowing. Very slowly
it puts the text letter by letter on the ground. As long as the machine is writing a letter, the machine protects
that part of the text. When the machine has
finished the letter, it passes through the next part
of the text, and reveals the text just written to the
elements and the passers-by.
Slowly the written text will get affected by the
weather, wind and audience and will disappear,
slowly.
Skryf can write a long text in a street or at a path.
The text can include one word or a whole story,
and it varies from big to small letters.
Skryf can write outdoors, this provides a slightly
rawer and faster transient text, or indoors, where
it is quite tight, subtle and just can persist long.

The multidisciplinary objects and installations of Van Bon always move between theatrical and autonomous
tension. He knows how to combine and to eliminate the boundaries between them, in order to create vital and
powerful objects, which have often a poetic and delicate content or effect.

« Sometimes, times gets away and we see a breath, a change more or less unpredictable and autonomous – in
the case of Time Moving Abstract Pièces by Gijs van Bon, it comes from the grace of an electric motor and
chips. Van Bon’s kinetic objects are abstract and non-referential. Slamming, leading, clicking, dragging,
sometimes nervously, sometimes in a meditative slowness, his work is recreated every time again. Plastic,
warm and poetic language of the cold and technical object generates new relationship between form,
movement and time. It is remarkable to see how the changing dynamics of Van Bon intensifies the look we give
them : What is going on really, what do we see, and above all, how does movement influences our perception
of forms, of space and time ?».

HOW IS SKRYF WORKING?
Skryf is based on CNC (Computer Numerical Control) milling machines. This technique consists of manipulating
tools by a computer. The technique used in Skryf is constructed so Skryf can write letters and drawings with
sand. Everything consists of lines is possible, with a maximum width of 50cm. The possible length is virtually
unlimited.
The computer calculates the right coordinates, and three motors control the ‘mouth’ where the sand comes
from. Different fonts, but also logos and drawings are possible to draw.
Skyf writes with white bird sand. These can be coloured as desired.

Runs on power
Best conditions are a flat and plane ground with calm weather. We can write both indoors and out.
A moment of drizzle can’t be a problem; real showers are a problem for the laptop and other
electronic devices.
Wind ensures that letters are less tight written during the ‘writing’ process

When SKRYF performs more than one day, it is necessary that we can reload our batteries in a wellventilated space to a power connection of 220v.
If necessary, we can also work on batteries. Maximum performance time is then 4 hours. If you wish to
enlarge this, contact us in advance.

It’s possible to write with coloured sand. Additional costs are € 50,- per colour.

A safe, secured and dry storage to store the machine out of performance hours.
PARKING

Reservation of a parking place and a parking license in the near area of the performance spot is
necessary. Parking fees are for the account of the organiser.
We will drive to the performance spot for loading and unloading.

During the presence of Skryf we will expect, tea, coffee, soda and light refreshments for the artist
During the presence of Skryf we also expect meals during morning, afternoon and evening for 1 person
