Grif "Teller jg*L - Memorial Art RAILROAD MUSEUM Of PENNSYLVANIA The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is privileged to own several of the paintings by famed railroad artist Griff Teller. The painting (right) of Pennsylvania Railroad Business Car No. 120 was done by Teller at age 74, beginning a successful "retirement" career. The Museum is committed to establishment of a permanent display portraying Teller and his accomplishments. A generous gift of $5000 from the Teller family and friends spearheads the effort. The "Griff Teller Memorial Art Fund" has been established through the Friends of the Museum and is being used to improve the Museum's second floor exhibit gallery, in which many of Teller's well-known and original artwork are fre quently displayed. "The grant could not have come at a better time," noted Museum Director Dave Dunn, "Museum staff has designed a section of the gallery to showcase Teller's art including some of his personal effects and original artist materials. In addition to an increase in gallery space, new lighting, library reading and research rooms and staff workspace are also being provided." Griffith Harold Teller (1899-1993) was born in Newark, New Jersey, and attended the School of Fine and Industrial Arts in Newark and the Art Students' League in New York City. Teller worked as an artist in cal endar production and ad specialties for the Osborne Company, painting numerous landscapes and stock scenes offered in Osborne's catalog of calendars for their many clients. From 1928 to 1942 and from 1947 to 1958, Teller created the oil paintings used on the Pennsylvania Railroad's annual advertising calendar, hundreds of thousands of which were distributed worldwide. Teller's art work for the Pennsylvania Railroad has achieved legendary status. Following his retirement, Teller taught art classes and traveled to Vermont where he painted one of his favorite sub jects, landscapes with barns. Rediscovered by railroad enthusiasts in the 1970s, Teller began to acquire hundreds of commissions to paint railroad scenes. Most featured the Pennsylvania Railroad. In October 1984, the Railroad Museum displayed the railroad oil paintings of Griff Teller at the first major art show staged at the Museum. With 14 original works on exhibit, it was, to date, the largest gathering of Teller works ever assembled. Although scheduled to close in April of the following year, the exhibit was extended an additional six months due to its popularity. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's railroad heritage license plate, unveiled at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in December 1998, features Griff Teller's famous 1928 painting, "When the Broad Way Meets the Dawn (shown right)." This dynamic work of art depicts the power and speed of a classic K4 locomotive as it pulls the eastbound Broadway Limited along the rural and peaceful Juniata River Valley in Central Pennsylvania in the late 1920s. For additional information on Teller's work, consult: Dan Cupper, Crossroads of Commerce - The Pennsylvania Railroad Calendar Art of Griff Teller. Richmond, VT. 1992. This highly acclaimed book is avail able in the Museum's Whistle Stop . The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania's permanent collection cur rently includes five Teller oil paintings: "When the Broad Way Meets the Dawn" (1928); "Giant Conquerors of Space and Time" (1931); "SpeedSafety-Comfort" (1936); "Untitled" (Pennsylvania Railroad Business Car No. 120; 1974); and "The John Bull Replica" (Commissioned by the Friends of the Railroad Museum; 1983). In addition, "On Time!" has been recently donated to the museum, as has "Conway Yard." Private collectors and corporations occasionally place their Teller works on loan to the Railroad Museum. You can help make a world-class museum even greater! Gifts to the Museum maybe made to the Friends of the Railroad Museum in cash, securities and many forms of personal property in unrestricted form or directed to specific needs of the Museum. In addition to the Friends'Annual Giving Program (ALL ABOARD), the permanent Endowment Fund, deferred options, memorial and naming opportunities also are available to the donor. Donors may support education, preservation and library/archives development, sponsor special events, endow staff positions and underwrite exhibitions and publications.
