PCIcard-based system, alongside MOTU-signature
premium sound quality, with an HD192. This
12-channel interface offers up to 24-bit/192kHz conversions and is available in both PCI and PCIe versions to suit both
Mac and PC setups. All inputs and outputs on the rear panel support 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4, and 192kHz operation,
and the 12 analog inputs boast a signal-to-noise ratio of just over 120dB, for incredible performance. You also get AES/
EBU digital I/O at sample rates up to 96kHz plus independent, real-time sample rate conversion on the digital I/O. In
addition, an “AES word in” BNC connector lets you clock the AES/EBU section independently from the rest of the system,
though system word clock input/output is provided on standard BNC connectors.
At the heart of the HD192 system is its PCI-424 card, which comes included — it’s the same card used by MOTU’s
acclaimed 2408mk3 and 24I/O and is fully compatible with legacy MOTU interfaces, such as the 1296, 1224, 24i, and
308. The card also adds MOTU’s famous CueMix DSP system, a processor that’s dedicated to creating custom monitor
mixes using up to 96 channels and can provide up to 48 separate stereo mixes in a 96-channel system. What’s more,
all the processing happens on the card itself, freeing up the power of your computer for your other essential tasks, such
as running plug-ins. And should you require even more I/O, you can add 12-channel HD192io expansion interfaces

The PCI or PCIe card included with the 2408mk3 system, the 424, is the same card employed by the other interfaces
featured on this page. To create an incredibly flexible I/O setup, you can mix and match MOTU interfaces to suit your
custom needs — the card can support up to four MOTU interfaces simultaneously. In addition, the 424 card also
features MOTU’s CueMix DSP mixing and monitoring matrix. This DSP-driven technology functions much like an
external mixer, except it performs with near-zero monitoring latency and keeps your computer’s processing power
preserved, so you can put it to work on your other essential tasks.
The 2408mk3 I/O Expansion is one option to expand your system — it’s the same interface that comes bundled
with the 2408mk3, just without the card.

of analog 24-bit/96kHz recording and playback, while
the 2408mk3’s extensive digital I/O allows up to a total of
32 channels. The connections include built-in video and SMPTE time synchronization, and both ADAT lightpipe and
TASCAM TDIF, at any sample rate up to 96kHz.
$
Here’s an affordable way to get 24 channels of highquality 24-bit/96kHz audio into your computer. Available
in both PCI and PCIe varieties, the MOTU 24I/O consists
of a single-rackspace interface and a PCI-424 card. On
the 24I/O, a front-panel 5-segment LED display gives you
activity information for every one of its 24 rear-panel TRS
inputs and outputs. Should you need additional channels
of I/O, you can easily expand your system with the 24I/O
Expander, which gives you 24 more channels. In fact,
the PCI-424 card that comes included with the 24I/O is
compatible with up to four interfaces at the same time
— and it’s not just limited to the 24I/O interface. You
can mix and match many MOTU interfaces, including the
HD192 (left), to bring in various kinds of I/O. The card
also offers flexible CueMix DSP for near-zero latency.

GETTING THE MOST FROM

T
he idea of limitation strikes two-fold in creative
people. On one hand, impending deadlines
seem to magically give rise to productivity. But,
on the other hand, when you’re midproject, in
the throes of creativity, and about to execute a stroke
of pure genius, having your computer reach its limit
and run out of processing power can be enough to
derail even the most focused of creators. And though
we can creatively compromise and still get a great
result, isn’t a computer supposed to be a tool that
brings our visions to life? It’s meant to respond to what
we say — and not the other way around.
But, for many of us, replacing our computer right now just isn’t in the
cards. For a close-to-home example, I try to think of my computer as
having a 3-year life span — that mental line is both for the purpose of
“I-want-that” self-restraint and for plain-old budgetary reasons. And, if
my trusty old computer’s in middle age and still kicking, then I’m going to
hold off on my upgrade — even if they show off the coolest thing ever at
the latest computer trade show (dang it).
So, what should you do in the face of a maxed-out CPU and a bubblingover creative wellspring? I’ll give you two words: don’t compromise.
Lucky for us, it’s a great time to be in the field, as there are amazing
solutions coming out all of the time to address this very seeming
conundrum. Today, you can rest assured knowing that whether you have
a just-off-the-shelf laptop or a time-tested tower, there are easy ways for
you to squeeze in more plug-ins, more tracks, and more of your ideas —
without having to buy a brand-new machine.
Addressing Your Interface Part I —
Choosing a Connection Type
If we take one step outside of our computer, then we reach our audio
interface — and, if you’re really hurting for processing power, then,
outside of your CPU setup, this is the best place to begin the CPUoptimization process.
To start, your “port” of choice plays the biggest role in how quickly
you’re recording tracks. Are you connecting your interface system via
USB 1.1, USB 2.0, or FireWire
— or, are you connecting via
an ExpressCard or a PCIe slot?
The previous list was roughly in
order of speed (although,
know that there are
good arguments
Apple MacBook Pro 17"
on either side that make USB 2.0 and FireWire performance-competitive
with one another). Ultimately, though, which connectivity solution is
best for you depends largely on what ports you have available on your
computer. Nearly all computers feature USB, so going with a USB 2.0
audio interface is a safe bet if you’re optimizing a system that may see
different computers from time to time — maybe if you’re bringing gear
over to a friend’s house for recording a jam. Alternatively, FireWire offers
up the benefit of daisy-chaining other interfaces and hard drives, without
a performance hit.
For the absolute best performance possible, though, you’ll want to
choose an ExpressCard system for your laptop or a PCIe system for your
desktop computer. In terms of future expandability and power, nothing
compares to a PCIe-based setup — and, if you’re designing the ultimate
rig for your project or professional studio setup, then that’s reason
enough to put a desktop computer at its heart. In this case, what you will
sacrifice in portability, you will absolutely make up in forward compatibility and expandability.
Addressing Your Interface Part II —
Today’s Boon of DSP Interfaces
To further the conversation about audio interfaces, it’s well worth noting
that many of today’s interfaces offer up additional DSP (Digital Signal
Processing) power — beyond the performance you’ll get through their
connectivity methods. Still, you’ll find that the most horsepower available
is through the ExpressCard and PCIe systems. But, those systems aren’t
always in the budget — or practical for basic home recording and
composing. So, if you’re tackling a band demo or handling a singer/
songwriter-type recording, then you may be well served to go with an
interface that features onboard DSP.
An interface’s DSP capabilities can come in a few different flavors. Some
interfaces offer up handy DSP-mixing flexibility. With it, you can use an
included software program to set up the mixes on the hardware, then
flexibly route any input (or combination of inputs) to any output — and
you can control how much of each input goes into each output. This is
particularly useful when you’re recording a full band. You can give the
lead singer a vocal-heavy mix, blending in the right amount of drum and
guitar parts to inspire a tight performance. You can also route a click
track to the drummer and dial in the perfect blend of the other instru-

maxed out your inside-the-computer potential, then you’re missing out
m
oon a significant system boost.

ments in the band. Another bonus is that many of these interfaces
let you save the setups and return to them, so it’s easy to get up and
working — without putting the mixing strain on your computer.
Taking that one step further, many DSP interfaces also offer up
onboard DSP effects. These can include reverb, delay, equalization,
compression, and models of famous preamps — and more robust
options are being released all of the time. When tracking with
these DSP interfaces, instead of using up your CPU power with a
reverb plug-in, you can just dial in the onboard DSP effect to enjoy
a headphone mix that sounds great — without any pesky latency
issues. You also usually have the option to record that mix “dry”
(without the effects) or “wet” (with the effects), which can help fill the
role of outboard gear in a budget-minded home studio or a portabilityconscious mobile rig.
Accelerate Your Plug-ins and Virtual Instruments
Optimizing your interface setup can make a big difference when
you’re tracking and routing raw audio. But, what about those of us
layering in virtual instruments or using plug-ins during mixdown?
There’s no getting around the fact that many of the best-sounding
plug-ins and virtual instruments are CPU-hungry giants — and
that makes sense, as software developers are always pushing their
projects to the edge, making our virtual selection sound even better
as each generation of more capable computers comes out. Luckily,
though, the industry is also on the ball with this one — and many
plug-in makers are teaming up with hardware developers to create
DSP-driven versions of these plug-ins.
The selection of DSP-powered plug-ins and virtual instruments is
growing all of the time. And, like the DSP capabilities of interfaces, the
options come in a few different varieties. Some versions run on actual
external hardware. With the hardware, you can get your hands on a
plug-in’s parameters and tweak them to your liking, just as you would
with a dedicated control surface. Other DSP options come in the form
of PCIe cards. Akin to PCIe-based audio interfaces, these cards install
right into your desktop computer and offer up an impressive girth of
processing power.
Once you’ve offloaded much of your signal-processing needs, you may
find that you have enough power to run your favorite virtual instruments
or plug-ins, without issues. But, if you’re looking to free up the most
native power possible, there are modules available that can run a
staggering amount of VST-compatible plug-ins or virtual instruments.
A secondary benefit of these systems is that they’re also optimized for
stage use — so, if you’re actively working both on the stage and in the
studio, then this may be the most cost-effective option for enjoying your
favorite plug-ins and instrument sounds in both arenas.
Let’s start with the hard drive. No matter the kind of work you’re
doing, you’ll want to be sure you have a dedicated hard drive for
recording. With off-the-shelf computers getting more and more
beefy, a common mistake is to use your computer’s system drive
for everything — from running your DAW software to streaming the
virtual instrument samples to accepting the newly recorded information — and that’s a lot to ask of one drive. Instead, you’ll enjoy a
performance boost by using a separate recording hard drive — and to
really make the most out of your system, it’s worth having yet another
hard drive to handle the streaming of all of your samples. In any event,
having an extra drive isn’t going to help if it’s not up to par.
Today, you’ll want to be sure you’re streaming samples from and
recording to at least a 7200RPM drive. You’ll also want to make sure
that the drive has the Oxford 924 bridging chip. This will ensure that
the drive is capable of handling audio production’s high demands —
and it will also qualify the drive for use with today’s most popular and
professional DAWs.
Another vital system element is the amount of RAM (Random Access
Memory) you have installed in your computer. Make sure you have
at least 2GB of RAM. And if you’re at 2GB, then think about moving
up to 4GB — if your computer allows it. Adding RAM is one of the
most effective ways to boost your computer’s efficiency when running
applications, and you’ll be amazed by how much more smoothly your
system runs.
Simple Roads Less Traveled
Even before you add any new gear to help speed up your system,
consider taking a few minutes to double check your system settings.
Sometimes, even slight adjustments, such as shutting off your
wireless card, can make drastic improvements to your computer’s
performance. To help you with this, our SweetCare service crew
has put together really useful computer-optimization guides — for
both Mac and PC — which you can access online. Just visit www.
sweetwater.com/sweetcare and search for either “Mac optimization”
or “PC optimization.”
Saying Goodbye to the Bottleneck
Let’s face it; as creatively and technologically inclined people, we’re
always going to want a little bit more — whether that means more
sounds, more gadgets, more from ourselves, or more processing
power to see our ideas through to fully realized projects. So, here’s
to snagging a few pieces of gear; getting over that CPU-limit hurdle;
and getting up and running into the smooth, creative straightaway —
hopefully with the wind of inspiration at your back.
ck
Finally, if you’re still in need of even more power, then it’s worth quick
mention that investing in a piece or two of great outboard gear can
go a long way toward cutting down your CPU plug-in load. True,
having a massive collection of virtual gear to choose from can
make a gearhead’s heart beat faster — and that virtual collection
is still more than worth having available in your tool box — but
achieving your core sound through a few pieces of gear that you
really “know” can be just the trick for achieving a more polished
sound. And, after all, having a bit of eye candy in the studio rack
never hurt anyone.

MR816 CSX
16 x 16 FireWire Audio Interface with DSP Channel Strip and Reverb
If you use Cubase music production software, then you’ll love the MR Series. These
FireWire interfaces are designed to deliver much more than just clean I/O — they’re
designed to enhance your workflow. Both the MR816 CSX and the MR816 X have the
same basic I/O configurations — 16-in/16-out — but the magic lies in the “CSX” and
“X” in their names, which relate to the DSP-powered effects built into the units. The
“CS” stands for the MR816 CSX’s exclusive channel plug-in — when engaged, the two
knobs on the front panel put you in charge of compression and EQ. The “X” — on both
— stands for a REV-X reverb plug-in. You can run up to eight instances of the CS plug-in
and one of the X plug-in, to create inspiring headphone mixes, without taxing your CPU
and causing latency. Both interfaces also feature Quick Connect, for deep Cubase integration. You can route inputs, arm tracks for recording, create new tracks, and more — all
from the front panel! DSP mixing adds more functionality.

PreSonus has built quite a
reputation for crafting gear
that defies logic when it comes to the bang-for-the-buck factor, and the FireStudio
2626 fits squarely into that category. The FireStudio is a complete 24-bit/96kHz
professional recording system, combining eight Class A PreSonus microphone
preamplifiers, up to 16 channels of optical ADAT I/O, and S/PDIF and MIDI I/O with
a 36 x 36 x 18 zero-latency mixer/router for setting up headphone monitor mixes
or any number of other studio tasks. The FireStudio also comes with award-winning
recording and production software; virtual instruments; plug-ins; drum loops; and
samples, including Cubase LE 4 and the PreSonus ProPak, which includes great
plug-ins and 2GB of loops and samples to get you started making music immediately.
The MSR
R (Monitor Station Remote) is an optional surround-capable remote control
delivering input switching, speaker switching, talkback, dim, mute, mono, and more,
to give you complete professional control of your FireStudio.

FireStudio Tube
24-bit/96kHz FireWire Interface with Two Tube Channels, Eight
XMAX Preamps, and Six TRS Inputs
It seems that the “tube versus solid-state” argument has raged for as long as there has
been recording equipment. With the FireStudio Tube, PreSonus continues to expand
their successful FireStudio line while offering a “best-of-both-worlds” approach to audio
interfaces. The FireStudio Tube is packed with 16 simultaneous analog inputs — two
tube-based channels on the front panel, with eight XMAX preamps and six balanced TRS
inputs. The tube channels sport combo jacks, so any direct-injected instruments can
benefit from the tube circuitry, with limiters and LED meters to help keep the incoming
signal under control.
But there’s more to the FireStudio Tube than the great-sounding and flexible analog
front end. The digital converters provide an impressive 114dB of dynamic range, with
a JetPLL low-jitter clock keeping the signal sounding its best. An internal 34x4 mixer
matrix makes setting up zero-latency monitor mixes a snap. You’ve also got access
to MIDI I/O, for connecting the FireStudio Tube to your favorite virtual instruments.
Ultimately, with the large number of simultaneous inputs available and the flexibility
to add tube warmth to your tracks, the FireStudio Tube is a superb centerpiece to any
digital studio.

Fireface UC
USB 24-bit/192kHz Audio Interface
RME’s Fireface UC continues the Fireface legacy, but this time FireWire connectivity
is traded for USB. Using a newly developed RME Hammerfall core, the Fireface UC is
capable of super-low latencies, even when running multi-channel audio. Two different
firmware versions with different transfer methods are used, effectively removing the
current restrictions USB often imparts on an audio interface. As mentioned previously,
latency is nearly nonexistent on both the Mac OS X and Windows Vista platforms. I/O
is plentiful, as the Fireface UC boasts two digitally controlled mic pres, ADAT, and S/
PDIF, for a total of 18 input/output channels. Plus, there’s MIDI I/O (on a 4 x 5-pin DIN
breakout cable) and word clock.

optical I/O — totaling 32 channels — plus S/PDIF I/O
and AES/EBU I/O, for a total of 36-in/36-out. S/PDIF (phono) and AES/
EBU are available at the same time. You’ll enjoy flexible routing across these channels and

Control Surfaces
NEW!
ZeRO SL mkII
Keyless MIDI Control
Surface with Automap
Novation’s ZeRO SL MkII is a
retooled version of the acclaimed
ReMOTE ZeRO SL keyless controller. Like the other controllers in the ReMOTE series, the ZeRO SL MkII automaps
to most of the popular DAW software platforms. Perfect for use in the studio or onstage, this control surface uses a
144-character display to let you keep an eye on the status of your controls. This handy unit features eight smooth 60mm
faders, eight rotary encoders, eight touch-sensitive knobs, and eight “soft-feel” trigger pads, for maximum control and
flexibility. A new crossfader makes this unit even better for live performances. The ZeRO SL MkII includes the same
innovative Automap software found on the previous version, so mapping controllers is a snap — Automap’s user
interface shows all your current mappings on-screen, plus you can save mappings from different projects and manage
them with ease.

UC-33e
USB Control Surface
Evolution’s UC-33e gives you easy control over
your soft synths. This USB hardware controller
works with just about any computer music setup,
giving you easy control over your soft synths.
The UC-33e can be used as a standalone
controller for your live MIDI rack, with
instant control over as many as 47 different
MIDI parameters, and you can quickly
change setups as you change instruments.
The UC-33e comes with preset configurations
for immediate control over virtual instruments and host applications.
All of the UC-33e’s assignable real-time controllers are easily programmed via the numeric
keypad for creating custom configurations. Each of the UC-33e’s 47 controllers can transmit pre-programmed sysex
messages and can also be configured to transmit on individual MIDI channels. You can store your custom setups
in any of 33 memory locations for easy recall. The UC-33e also features a drawbar mode for the sliders — great for
controlling virtual organs. A mute function lets you reposition all the controllers without the risk of “jumping” filters
or levels during your performance.

low price. Great for portable laptop DJ performances and
desktop recording environments alike, its low-profile
design and side-mounted USB socket make it handy for
use anywhere, and a unique “speed dial” encoder takes
instant control of whatever instrument or effect you’ve
selected. The secret weapon behind Nocturn is its use of
Novation’s Automap Universal 2.0 mapping software,
which provides seamless, instant, intuitive control
over all automatable plug-ins inside every major DAW
sequencer out there. It includes a “heads-up transparent

nanoKONTROL
Slim Desktop USB Controller with

Bitstream 3x
MIDI Hardware Controller
with DAW Control
Capabilities and USB
As today’s desktop instrument
and recording setups offer
more and more features and
operations that were considered
“pro-only” just a few short years
ago. Due to their nature, these setups require a combination of functionality, tactile control surfaces, and compact
designs that fit into the environment without hogging precious space. The Bitstream 3x is a unique MIDI hardware
controller with the capability of handling DAW control functions, as well. “3x” stands for “3 axis” because the Bitstream
3X features full control over three different axes: X, Y, and Z. A joystick allows control over two axes (X and Y), while an
infrared controller is used for the Z axis. With 35 knobs, eight sliders, and 16 buttons, you have total hands-on control
over any DAW software. Plus, it comes with an astounding 13,000 presets for applications including Reason, Live,
Reaktor, Traktor, Absynth, Cakewalk, and Cubase.

Desktop space is often quite limited in the project studio

controller that both fits your needs and doesn’t take up
much real estate. The nanoKONTROL does both while
putting serious tactile control beneath your fingertips
in an extremely slim USB device — slimmer, in fact,
than the base of most computer keyboards. With the
nanoKONTROL, you get nine faders, nine knobs, 18
switches, and a complete transport section — plus,
everything’s MIDI programmable, so you can set it up to

Digital Audio Converters
AD-16X
16-channel A/D Converter with 192kHz Sampling
Symphony 64
64-channel PCI Express Card for Macintosh
Apogee’s Symphony 64 is the key to the powerful
Symphony system. Doubling the original Symphony’s
channel count of 32 to an astounding 64 channels of I/O
per card (up to 128 channels with two cards installed),
Symphony 64 connects Apogee’s X-Series and Rosetta
Series converters to Apple’s Mac Pro for perhaps the
lowest latency available in a native audio system (1.6
milliseconds at 96k). Symphony hardware also features
Apogee’s Maestro, for extensive routing capabilities
between Mac OS X applications and Apogee’s hardware
digital system.
Specs: PCI Express • 32-channel (with external I/O) • 24-bit/192kHz
Apogee converters are of legendary status, and at the top of Apogee’s offerings sit the 16-channel AD-16X and DA-16X.
Boasting the same renowned clocking technology found in Apogee’s Big Ben, you can expect premium jitter-free
performance from these pieces. What’s more, their Synchronous Switching power supplies are state of the art. Each
converter features 24-bit/192kHz standard sampling rates for studio-grade sound, and each works in conjunction with
the X-Series cards (see below left), so you can integrate them easily into your native or HD system.

Rosetta 800
8-channel, 24-bit/192kHz AD/DA Converter
“I just upgraded my new studio to Logic Pro and
the Apogee Symphony System. This is the fastest,
most powerful native DAW on the planet. My
clients are amazed at the track and plug-in
count I get, and the audio quality is second
to none!”
— Dennis Konicki, Sales Engineer, Ext. 1356
For eight channels of superb AD/DA conversion, Apogee’s Rosetta 800 is the professional’s choice, offering sample
rates all the way up to 24-bit/192kHz. What’s more, the ultra-low-jitter Intelliclock signal onboard the Rosetta 800 acts
much like two clocks in one — the “read” clock features a wide locking range and its own buffer, while a low-jitter
“write” clock writes the data out of the buffer and clocks the converters for superior performance. In addition, Apogee
has added a SoftLimit feature, so you can maximize digital output without clipping. Plus, onboard industry-standard
UV22HR dithering technology assists in reducing the word length of high-resolution digital signals to 16 bits, resulting
in dramatically improved content for the Internet and for CD mastering. It works with Apogee’s X-series cards.

ADI-8 DS
24-bit/96kHz AD/DA Converter
Analog-to-ADAT
Converter
A converter is only as good as the gain compensation at the input. The ADI-8 DS has
three gain levels, making it compatible with a wide range of studio equipment — loss
is avoided before the signal gets to the converter, to preserve signal integrity. The ADI-8
DS uses 24-bit converters with 128-times oversampling to achieve more than 110dB of
real dynamic range, and all digital inputs and outputs operate at full 24-bit resolution.
The quality of your mixes rely on your conversion, and the ADI-8 DS provides pristine
conversion, whether you’re going from analog to digital or vice versa.
Aphex’s 142 is an
efficient, high-quality
analog-to-ADAT converter. If you have unused ADAT inputs on your audio interface,
then you can use the Aphex 142 to take advantage of those eight additional channels
at 48kHz. The device accepts anything with an analog line output, so you’re good to go.
Plus, for converting an ADAT signal to analog, Aphex makes another exceptional piece of
gear for your need, with the 141.

If you’ve never heard your gear with a master clock in the signal chain, then it’s fair to say that you’ve never really heard your gear. Clicks, pops, and
overall “harshness” are simply inevitable results of improper clocking — and just as you want the band you’re tracking to sync together in time, it’s
also vital for your gear to behave the same way. Apogee’s Big Ben, our most popular master clock, takes that digital jitter out of the equation. It’s an
extremely high-quality device that employs Apogee’s most advanced Direct Digital Synthesis technology alongside DSP-based digital filtering. The end
result is clearer, cleaner sound — a drastic improvement that’s earned the Big Ben near-legendary status in high-end facilities. Beyond that, the Big
