In the name of GOD I.R of Iran Country Report GEO 7th Symposium 26-28 May Tokyo- Japan Davood Parhizkar (PhD in Meteorology) Vice minister of Roads and Transportation ministry, President of I.R of Iran Meteorology Organization (IRIMO) IRAN Area> 1.6 m km ̂2, Population> 75m Iran 2 IRIMO Observation Networks WE Observe, Transmit and Archive: 386 synoptic stations, 686 Agriculture and Climate stations, 15 Upper air, 9 Dust detection and Air Quality stations, 1 Ground Pollution Station, 120 AWSs, 8 C&S Band Single & DuPol Doppler Radars 26 Satellite data receiving systems 67 Road observation stations forecasts facilities • • • • • • • • Global Models of ECMWF, GFS, ARPEGDE Limited area Models of MM5, WRF, HRM Real observation data Real time synoptic charts Satellite images Radar data Thermodynamic charts like Skew-T Range of forecasts • Now casting up to 6 hours • Short range up to 10 days • Seasonal up to 3 months IRIMO services 1- Air quality - Air pollution is the main problem of mega cities - Observation of air pollution in cities is doing by national Environment Organization and megacity municipalities and IRIMO - Forecasting of the air quality is doing by IRIMO - Range of forecasting is up to 5 days IRIMO services 2- Severe weather prediction Early warning Is issued in city and regional scales for I. storms, II. heat waves, III. Cold surge, IV. heavy snow, V. flash floods, VI. floods and droughts IRIMO services 3- Nowcasting For issuing a nowcast we use: latest radar, satellite and observational data and considering of small-scale features of phenomenon like thunderstorm, heavy shower, flash flood and destructive wind -Nowcasting is a powerful toll for reduction of private, public and industrial property damage and saving the life of people -Nowcasting of hazardous weather for aviation in terminals or en-route environment, marine safety, water and power management are part of the routine activity of IRIMO. IRIMO services 4-1- Climate monitoring -Dry and warm -Warm and wet -Dry and cold -Moderate and wet -Drought IRIMO services 4-2-Common Drought Indices • • • • • Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) Percent of Normal (PN) Palmer Drought Index (PDSI, PHDI, CMI) Surface Water Supply Index (SWSI) Vegetation indices (NDVI, VCI, SVI) 10 IRIMO services 4-3- Monitoring and warning drought system in Iran Analysis of precipitation and runoff Ministry of Energy Daily soil moisture model Iran’s drought monitoring system Ministry of agriculture Meteorological organization Meteorological organization Daily precipitation modeling using satelite Drought monitoring index NDVI and other related indexes Analysis of temperature and environmental conditions. 11 23 IRIMO services 5- Agriculture section - Food security is the main challenge of the human society IRIMO’s services for those people who are active in this part are: 1- Statistical Services 2- On time Services 3- Research Services IRIMO services 5-1- Statistical Services • Determine weather and climate of the Region • Define range of variations of Temperature, precipitation, humidity, pressure, evaporation,.. • Determine probability for occurrence of weather related phenomenon such as: earlylate frost,… • Probability of precipitation commence (the earliest or latest start date) • Probability of occurrence for hazardous weather such as: Hail, floods, Thunderstorms, destructive winds, … IRIMO services 5-2-1- On time Services -Real time meteorological observation data -Real time phonologic data -Nowcasting with detailed features of current weather: • To reduce damage and property loose • To save yield, money and better livelihoods IRIMO services 5-2-2- On time Services -Short range forecasting up to 10 days for reducing damage and save livelihoods by better programming for agricultural activities -Seasonal forecast up to 3 months for decision making and determining the strategies regarding food security IRIMO services 5-3- Research services 1. Climate effects on living organisms including animals and Plants and mutual effects of atmosphere and soil on plants 2. Determine phonological stages of crops for agricultural operations, such as irrigation, use of fertilizers,… 3. Climatic classification in regional scale for adapted crops and determine suitable regions of farming 4. Determine regional limitations and climate potentials to have the best cultivation model based on weather and crop type 5. Determine the best time for pesticides use 6. Introduction new crop varieties with better yield and adapted with regional climate IRIMO services 5-4- Tahak System 1- Identify and distinguish the end users 2- Identify the needs of them 3- Preparing the data and products 4- Sending their needs by using the best system delivery 5- Capacity building for better using the meteorological data and products in farming 6- Feedback 7- Documentation IRIMO services 6- Liaison with others We cooperate with others to: Water resources & Energy ministry to manage water use Transportation Ministry to increase safety and Economic Benefits Environment Organization to save environment and biodiversity, Urbanization and internal ministry to help planning Health Ministry to improve health and reduce costs Science and higher Education Ministry to improve Science Agricultural ministry to Provide Food security Total capacity about 18,000 MW Thank you
