Editorial
Al concluir el mes de julio les presentamos un boletín con
información actualizada sobre nuestra participación en los
Juegos Olímpicos que darán inicio en Rio el día 5 de agosto, así
como sobre la invitación de arqueros de nuestro continente para
competir en los Juegos Paralímpicos en septiembre.
Encontrarán un interesante recuento de eventos de gran
relevancia celebrados en América en julio de los años 1976,
1986, 1996 y 2006.
Nuevamente abordaremos temas de desarrollo relacionados con seminarios y otras vías
de superación técnica para atletas, entrenadores y otras personas relacionadas con el
deporte.
Se incluyen detalles del torneo ranking mundial celebrado en Iguazú, Argentina, así como
noticias recibidas de nuestras asociaciones miembros.
Cuando se publique nuestro próximo boletín el último día del mes de agosto, ya habrán
pasado los Juegos Olímpicos. Estamos seguros que tendremos el orgullo de publicar
excelentes noticias sobre la actuación de nuestros arqueros en la magna cita del deporte
mundial de este cuatrienio.
We are closing July with the publication of a bulletin that includes updated information
on our participation in the Olympic Games that will start on August 5, as well as the
confirmation of two invitation places for archers from two of our Member Associations
to compete at the Paralympics in September.
You will find an interesting flashback account on four major events held in the Americas
in July 1976, 1986, 1996 and 2006.

We will once again make reference to development activities connected with seminars
and other means of self-improvement for athletes, coaches and other people involved in
archery.
Details on the World Ranking Event held in Iguazu are included, as well as news received
from our Member Associations.
By the time our next Bulletin is published at the end of August, the Olympic Games will
have concluded. We are sure we will be proud to publish excellent news on our archers’
performance in the greatest event of the current four-year sports period.

La Comisión Bipartita encargada de distribuir plazas
por invitación para los Juegos Paralímpicos de Rio
de Janeiro otorgó plazas a dos arqueros de países de
América. En la categoría de arco recurvo masculino
abierto la plaza otorgada correspondió al
Colombiano Germán GOMEZ, mientras que en el
compuesto masculino abierto, el cupo fue entregado
al boricua Ricardo ROSARIO.
Ambos
competidores lograron las marcas mínimas
establecidas por World Archery para poder
participar en los Juegos.
The Bipartite Commission in charge of
distributing invitation places for the Rio
Paralympic Games has allocated two slots to
para-archers from the Americas. In the
Recurve Men Open category a position was
given to Colombia’s German GOMEZ, while
in the Compound Men Open event, Ricardo
ROSARIO (PUR) has been invited to
participate. Both of these archers have shot
the Minimum Qualification Scores set by
World Archery as a requisite to compete in
the Games.

Medellín recibió a arqueros de seis países en un campamento de entrenamiento a lo largo
del mes de julio. Cinco de estos equipos (Colombia, Cuba, Chile, Venezuela y la
República Dominicana) asistieron para prepararse en el camino hacia Río, mientras que
Perú envió a cuatro deportistas y una entrenadora con el objetivo de ganar experiencia y
mejorar los elementos técnicos del disparo con la mira puesta en un objetivo a largo plazo:
los Juegos Panamericanos de Lima 2019.

Las sesiones de entrenamiento incluyeron la realización de varias rondas de partidos,
muchos de ellos disparados desde una plataforma elevada similar a la que se utilizará en
los Juegos Olímpicos. La retroalimentación recibida de los participantes refleja un alto
nivel de satisfacción con las condiciones creadas por la Federación Colombiana y con los
resultados técnicos del encuentro.
Medellin hosted archers from six countries
on training camps all along July. Five of
these teams (Colombia, Cuba, Chile,
Venezuela and the Dominican Republic)
were getting ready to shoot at the Rio
Olympics, while Peru sent four archers and
their coach to gain experience and improve
their shooting form on their long-term road
to the 2019 Pan American Games.
The training sessions included several match
play rounds, in many of which the archers
shot from a raised platform resembling the
one they will shoot from in Rio. The
participants’ feedback was very positive
regarding the conditions provided by the
Colombian Federation and the technical
outcomes of the gathering in Medellin.

La Copa Merengue del año 2017, que había sido aprobada por la Asamblea General de
World Archery Americas como Evento de Ranking Mundial, ha sido cancelada por la
Federación Dominicana de Tiro con Arco.
The 2017 Copa Merengue, which had been accepted by the WAA General Assembly as a
World Ranking Event, has been cancelled by the Archery Federation of the Dominican
Republic.
América cada diez años desde 1976 / The Americas every ten
years since 1976
Los años terminados en el número 6 en el período de los últimos cuarenta se han
caracterizado por la celebración de importantes eventos del tiro con arco en América. Dos
Juegos Olímpicos en 1976 y 1996, y dos ediciones de los Juegos Centroamericanos y del
Caribe en 1986 y 2006 han demostrado lo importante que ha sido el mes de julio tanto
para deportistas como para organizadores. Miremos un poco hacia atrás en el tiempo para
recordar estos eventos.
Years ending in six in the last period of forty have been characterized by the holding of
major archery events in the Americas. Two Olympic Games in 1976 and 1996, and two
issues of the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1986 and 2006 have proven how
important July has been for both archers and Games organizers. Let´s look back in time
to recall those events.
1976- Los Juegos Olímpicos de Montreal / The Montreal
Olympics
Las competencias de tiro con arco de los Juegos Olímpicos se celebraron del 27 al 30 de
julio con el formato de Doble FITA en el que cada arquero dispararía 288 flechas, tal y
como se compitió en los Juegos anteriores en Múnich. La reglamentación en aquel
momento limitaba el número de participantes a dos por país en cada sexo.
El Campeonato Mundial de 1975 se celebró en Interlaken, Suiza, Allí dominaron los
hombres de Estados Unidos y las mujeres de la Unión Soviética. Darrell PACE y Rick
MCKINNEY (USA) ganaron oro y plata en el torneo masculino, y lo mismo hicieron las
soviéticas Zebiniso RUSTAMOVA y Valentina KOVPAN en el femenino. Estos

resultados permitían predecir que un dominio similar se produciría en los Juegos
Olímpicos un año después.
En Montreal, Darrell PACE (foto) fue el
mejor arquero a lo largo de toda la
competencia, y ganó el título olímpico con
record para los Juegos de 2571 puntos. Su
compañero de equipo MCKINNEY se
ubicó segundo en el primer FITA (144
flechas), pero fue superado por otros dos
arqueros cuando su rendimiento en 70 y 50
metros bajó considerablemente. El japonés
de 19 años Hiroshi MICHINAGA, quién
realizaba su debut internacional en
Montreal, obtuvo la medalla de Plata con 69
puntos menos que PACE. Los 2495 puntos

Luann RYON aumentó gradualmente su ventaja a 34 puntos sobre su más cercana

Archery was contested on July 27-30 in a competition in which each athlete would shoot
288 arrows in a double FITA Round, just like in the previous Games in Munich.
Regulations at that time limited the number of participants per country to two in each
gender.
The 1975 World Championships were held in Interlaken, Switzerland, where the US men
and the Soviet women were dominant. Americans Darrell PACE and Rick MCKINNEY
ranked first and second, while Soviets Zebiniso RUSTAMOVA and Valentina KOVPAN
did the same on the women’s side. These results made everyone think that something
similar would happen a year after at the Olympics

debut in Montreal, won the Silver medal 69 points behind PACE. Italy’s Giancarlo
FERRARI´s 2495 were good enough for the Bronze medal. MCKINNEY finally landed
in fourth place 24 points away from the Italian.

RUSTAMOVA and KOVPAN were the two Soviet ladies in Montreal. They were ready to
beat every one of their opponents, which included archers from Poland, North Korea and
the United States. The US ladies in competition were the 1973 World Champion Linda
MYERS and an unknown 23-year old Californian named Luann RYON.
At the end of the first FITA Round, the field was headed by the determined RYON (1217)
and another surprising participant: Germany’s Maria URBAN, just one point behind the
leader. RUSTAMOVA was third, closely followed by WILEJTO (POL), JANG (PRK) and
BERGLUND (SWE). KOVPAN shot very poorly at 50 meters and placed only 7 th after
the first 144 arrows.

meters with 327. URBAN and BERGLUND were not able to put up with the pressure,
and slipped a few places down. After 216 arrows, JANG, WILEJTO and RUSTAMOVA
left the field in positions 3, 4 and 5.
On the last day, RYON and KOVPAN kept their medal winning rhythm, leaving everyone
else way behind to finally win Gold and Silver. In the battle for Bronze, RUSTAMOVA
played the best role and moved a few points ahead of JANG and WILEJTO in the 50
meters with respective scores of 294, 279 and 279. After the 30 meters, the name of the
World Champion from the Soviet Union was displayed in third position with 2407 points,
two more than JANG, and four more than Canada’s Lucille LEMAY.

American and Caribbean Games
La segunda aparición del tiro con arco en los Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe
ocurrió del 29 de junio al 2 de julio en la ciudad de Santiago de los Caballeros, República
Dominicana. Cuarenta y cuatro arqueros de recurvo de seis países dispararon 288 flechas
en una Doble FITA en cuatro días consecutivos.
A pesar del fuerte viento, los mejores arqueros emergieron como medallistas individuales
y por equipos. La mexicana Aurora BRETON, quien había ocupado el noveno puesto en
los Juegos Olímpicos de Los Ángeles, dirigió la orquesta durante todo el torneo y
concluyó con 50 puntos de ventaja sobre Gloria ROSA de Puerto Rico. La medalla de
Bronce individual la obtuvo la cubana Eva Lidia BUENO. Se entregaron medallas en
todas las distancias, lo que permitió a Aurora ganar, además, otras cuatro de oro.

Cuba obtuvo el oro por equipos femeninos con BUENO, María Elena CUETO, y la
Campeona de los Juegos de 1982 María Elena NARANJO. Las mexicanas quedaron
segundas, y las colombianas terceras. En este último equipo figuraba María Victoria
ECHAVARRIA, quien sigue siendo una arquera activa, y que actualmente forma parte
del Órgano de Fiscalización de World Archery Americas. Otra participante en los Juegos

de 1986 que actualmente ocupa un puesto en nuestra Confederación es la dominicana
Bárbara HERNANDEZ, quien preside el Comité de Desarrollo.
Varios años después de los Juegos de Santiago, Aurora BRETON, Gloria ROSA y
Bárbara HERNANDEZ ocuparon la presidencia de sus respectivas federaciones
nacionales.
Veintitrés hombres compitieron también en una Doble FITA. Alfonso DONATE (CUB),
quien había quedado segundo en los Juegos anteriores en La Habana, se recuperó de una
desventaja de un punto luego de los tres primeros días de competencia, y disparó el mejor
puntaje en los 50 metros para ganar la medalla de Oro. Muy cerca de él en las
puntuaciones quedaron los mexicanos Andrés ANCHONDO y Adolfo GONZALEZ,
quienes se colocaron en los puestos segundo y tercero.
Los medallistas individuales mexicanos, en unión de Omar BUSTANI, se llevaron el
título por equipos, seguidos de Cuba y Venezuela.

Archery’s second appearance in the
Central American and Caribbean Games
occurred on June 29-July 2, 1986 in the
city of Santiago de los Caballeros,
Dominican Republic. Forty four recurve
archers from six countries shot 288
arrows in a double FITA Round over four
consecutive days.
Despite the windy conditions, the best archers on the line emerged as individual and team
medalists. Mexico’s Aurora BRETON, who had ranked 9th at the 1984 Olympics in Los
Angeles, led all the way after the second distance to achieve a conclusive 50 point
advantage over Gloria ROSA (PUR). The Individual Double FITA Round Bronze Medal
went to Eva Lidia BUENO (CUB). Distance medals were also awarded, which allowed
Ms. BRETON to win four additional Gold as well.
Cuba took the women’s team Gold with BUENO, Maria Elena CUETO and the 1982 CAC
Games Champion Maria Elena NARANJO. Mexico ranked second to win Silver, while
Colombia took the Bronze. The Colombian team in 1986 included Maria Victoria
ECHAVARRIA, who is still an active archer, and a member of WAA’s Audit Board.
Another current WAA officer who competed at this event is Barbara HERNANDEZ
(DOM), who now chairs our Development Committee.
Several years after Santiago de los Caballeros, Aurora BRETON, Gloria ROSA and
Barbara HERNANDEZ became Presidents of their respective National Federations.
Twenty-three men competed in a Double FITA Round as well. Alfonso DONATE (CUB),
who had finished second in the previous Games in Havana, overcame a one-point
disadvantage after the first three competition days as he shot the best 50 meter score of
the day to secure his crown. He was very closely followed by Mexico’s Andres
ANCHONDO and Adolfo GONZALEZ, who took Silver and Bronze.
These two Mexicans plus Omar BUSTANI won the team Gold Medal. Cuba and
Venezuela ranked second and third.
The list of men participants in these Games showed names of archers who became
National Federation Presidents a few years later: Wilson RAMIREZ (PUR), Antonio
ORTEGA (DOM), Jose Miguel ROBIOU (DOM) and Hipolito CORDERO (DOM).

Games
Los Juegos Olímpicos de Atlanta 1996 fueron el primer gran evento en utilizar la Ronda
de 72 flechas a 70 metros antes de entrar a los partidos de eliminación. Fueron, también,
los primeros Juegos Olímpicos para los cuales fue necesario un sistema de clasificación
con un límite de 64 hombres y 64 mujeres.
La lista de resultados femeninos de la Ronda de 72 flechas la encabezó Lina
HERASYMENKO (UKR) con un Record Olímpico de 673. La siguieron la china HE
Ying (669) y la turca Natalia NASARIDZE (667). Las tres coreanas se ubicaron 4ta KIM
Jo-Sun, 8va KIM Kyung-Wook, and 9na YOUN Hye-Young, pero por equipos
establecieron record mundial y para los Juegos con 1984. Turquía, China, Ucrania y Rusia
las siguieron en el listado de 15 escuadras en competencia.
Las eliminatorias constaron de partidos de 18 flechas en las rondas desde 1/32 hasta el
1/8. Ocho tiradoras emergieron de estas rondas: las dos KIM de Corea, dos chinas:

Atlanta were the first big
event to use the 70 m round
(72 arrows) to rank the
archers before entering match play. They were also the first Olympic Games for which
archery needed to have a qualification system with a limit of 64 men and 64 women.
The list of results of the 72-arrow round for women showed Lina HERASYMENKO (UKR)
in first place with an Olympic Record of 673. She was followed by China’s HE Ying (669)
and Turkey’s Natalia NASARIDZE (667). The three Koreans ranked 4th KIM Jo-Sun, 8th
KIM Kyung-Wook, and 9th YOUN Hye-Young. As a team, the Koreans set a World and
Olympic Games Record with 1984. Turkey, China, Ukraine and Russia followed up
among the 15 squads in competition.
The elimination rounds consisted in 18-arrow matches from the 1/32 to the 1/8 round.
Eight archers emerged from these rounds: both of the Korean KIM’s, two Chinese:
WANG Xiaozhu and He Ying, Barbara MENSING (GER), Olena SADOVNYCHA (UKR),
Olga YAKUSHEVA (BLR) and Elif ALTINKAYNAK (TUR). Only four of them would
advance to the semifinals and medal matches. Twelve-arrow matches delivered four
names: KIM Kyung-Wook, Olena SADOVNYCHA, Elif ALTINKAYNAK and HE Ying.
The two Asians won their semis to get their tickets to the Gold match. SADOVNYCHA
and ALTINKAYNAK shot for Bronze. The Ukrainian was very solid and defeated her
opponent from Turkey 109-102.
In the Gold match, KIM Kyung-Wook won the fourth consecutive Women’s Individual
Olympic title for Korea since Los Angeles 1984. She led the match all along the twelve
arrows to overwhelm her Chinese opponent HE Ying 113-107.

The Americas were represented by five women who finished in the following positions:

The men’s individual ranking round also rendered an Olympic Record: Michele

OH Kyo-Moon (681). The top three archers from the Americas were the three members
of the US squad: Justin HUISH (9th with 670), Rodney WHITE (12th with 666) and

Three archers from our continent made it to the 1/8th
Elimination: Justin HUISH (USA), Andres ANCHONDO
(MEX) and Richard JOHNSON (USA), but only HUISH
was able to survive this round to shoot the quarter finals.
His match was against first seed FRANGILLI. Their scores
were tied after the 12 regulation arrows and a shoot-off
was necessary. HUISH’s arrow hit the ten ring to allow
him to reach the semifinals, in which he very easily outshot
Paul VERMEIREN from Belgium. Everything was now
ready for his Gold Match versus Sweden’s Magnus
PETERSSON.
HUISH shot very consistently and did not lose his initial
lead anytime during the match. The final score of 112-107
showed that the American was, without a doubt, the new
Olympic Champion.
OH Kyo-Moon (KOR) won his
Bronze match versus VERMEIREN.
The rest of the archers from the Americas ranked as followed: Richard JOHNSON (USA11th), Andres ANCHONDO (MEX-16th), Rodney WHITE (USA-24th), Jeannot
ROBITAILLE (CAN-37th), Robert RUSNOV (CAN-38th), Kevin SALLY (CAN-49th), and
Adolfo GONZALEZ (MEX-51st).
The Korean Women’s team repeated their victory from Seoul and Barcelona; this time
with a totally new team. They very easily defeated Sweden, Poland and Germany in three
consecutive matches. The Germans took the Silver medal, while Poland went home with
the Bronze. The US team, the only one from the Americas, got defeated in their first
match against Kazakhstan to rank 13th.
After HUISH’s individual triumph, the team round was expected to be very tight. Korea,
Italy and the USA had topped the qualification round list. These three teams made it to
the semifinals along with Australia. Korea knocked the Aussies 250-234, while the

United States edged Italy 251-247.

The Gold match was very close from the start. The unofficial score showed a tie at 250
when the 27 arrows were shot. Two arrow scores were uncertain and needed the judges
to pull out their magnifying glasses to make the official calls. The judges decided that
the Korean arrow had not touched the dividing line, while the US shaft had slightly done
so. The official score: 251 points and Gold medal for the USA, and 249 points and Silver
Medal for Korea.
2006.- Juegos Centro Americanos y del Caribe / Central
American and Caribbean Games
Los Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe de 2006 se celebraron del 15 al 20 de julio en
la ciudad colombiana de Cartagena con 115 participantes de Barbados, Colombia, Cuba,
la República Dominicana, El Salvador, Guatemala, México, Puerto Rico, TrinidadTobago y Venezuela.
Natalia SANCHEZ (COL) se convirtió en la primera mujer en
disparar sobre 1300 puntos con arco recurvo en los Juegos
Centro Americanos y del Caribe. Su puntaje de 1323 en la
Ronda FITA fue muy superior al alcanzado por las otras 23
participantes. Ganó todos sus partidos hasta llegar a la final
por Oro, en la que fue sorpresivamente derrotada por Lisbeth
LEONI (VEN), quien se había clasificado en el décimo puesto en la suma de las cuatro
distancias. Otra venezolana, Leidys BRITO, obtuvo el Bronze.
También sorprendente fue el resultado de las finales individuales entre hombres de arco
recurvo. Dos mexicanos habían dominado la Ronda de Ranking: Eduardo MAGAÑA
(1322) y Juan René SERRANO (1300). MAGAÑA fue eliminado por el colombiano
Alejandro PACHON en los octavos de eliminación. SERRANO sí logró llegar a la final,
pero fue vencido por Ismely ARIAS (CUB) por el Oro. Otro representante cubano, Juan
Carlos STEVENS, alcanzó el bronce.
Las hermanas mexicanas Linda y Almendra OCHOA ganaron todas las medallas de oro
individuales en el Compuesto Femenino. Los 1385 de Linda la colocaron en la cima de
la Ronda FITA. Ella ganó todas las distancias, excepto los 60 metros, que fueron
dominados por su hermana. Linda ganó la final en un dramático desempate contra su
hermana Almendra. El bronce fue al cuello de Luzmary GUEDEZ (VEN).
Tres arqueros salvadoreños llegaron a las semifinales en el Compuesto Masculino
individual. El favorito para ganar era Jorge JIMENEZ, quien había encabezado la Ronda

Compuesto Masculino acompañado de El Salvador y Venezuela. Cuba se coronó en el
Recurvo Masculino, con México y Colombia en segundo y tercer lugares.
Premiación Equipos Femeninos Arco Compuesto
Un detalle interesante que demuestra que el tiro con arco es un deporte para todos, con
independencia de la edad, es que siete de los participantes en Cartagena habían competido
en Santiago de los Caballeros veinte años antes. Este es el caso de cuatro dominicanos:
Ludys TEJADA, Bárbara HERNANDEZ, Hipólito CORDERO y José Miguel ROBIOU,
dos colombianos: los hermanos María Victoria and Juan Carlos ECHAVARRIA; y el
puertorriqueño Miguel PEDRAZA.
The 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games were held on July 15-20 in the
Colombian city of Cartagena with 115 participants from Barbados, Colombia, Cuba, the
Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Trinidad-Tobago
and Venezuela.

Natalia SANCHEZ (COL) became the first recurve woman to ever shoot over 1300 points
in the history of the Central American and Caribbean Games. Her score of 1323 in the
FITA Round overwhelmed all of the other 23 participants. She won all matches to reach
the Gold final, where she was surprisingly defeated but Lisbeth LEONI (VEN), who had
ranked in tenth place in the total of the four distances. Another Venezuelan, Leidys
BRITO, took the Bronze.
Another surprise occurred in the recurve men individual finals. Two Mexicans had
dominated the ranking round: Eduardo MAGAÑA (1322) and Juan René SERRANO
(1300). MAGAÑA was taken out by Colombia’s Alejandro PACHON in the 1/8 round.
SERRANO did reach the Final Match but was beaten by Ismely ARIAS (CUB) for Gold.
Another Cuban, Juan Carlos STEVENS, won the Bronze.
Two Mexican sisters, Linda and Almendra OCHOA, won all the individual Gold Medals
in the compound women event. Linda´s 1385 placed her on top in the FITA Round. She
won all distances but the 60 meters, which were taken by her sister. Linda won the Gold
Final in a dramatic shoot-off against Almendra. The Bronze medal went to Luzmary
GUEDEZ (VEN).

Mexico won three of the four team events: Recurve Women followed by Venezuela and
Colombia; Compound Women escorted by El Salvador and Cuba; and Compound Men
accompanied by El Salvador and Venezuela. Cuba was crowned in the Recurve Men,
where Mexico and Colombia won Silver and Bronze.
An interesting detail that shows that archery is a sport for everyone, regardless of age, is
that seven of the participants in Cartagena had competed in Santiago de los Caballeros

twenty years before. This is the case of four Dominicans: Ludys TEJADA, Bárbara
HERNANDEZ, Hipolito CORDERO and José Miguel ROBIOU, two Colombians: Maria
Victoria and Juan Carlos ECHAVARRIA; and Puerto Rico’s Miguel PEDRAZA.

Puerto Rico – Copa Juan Enrique Barrios
Una nueva edición de la Copa Juan Enrique Barrios, que contó con gran participación de
arqueros locales y con una delegación de la vecina República Dominicana, se celebró en
el Albergue Olímpico de Salinas, Puerto Rico del 6 al 10 de julio.
En los eventos individuales de adultos resultaron ganadores los boricuas Marla
CINTRON (Compuesto Femenino), Jean PIZARRO (Compuesto Masculino) y Ariel
CRUZ (Recurvo Masculino). La dominicana Yessica CAMILO (clasificada para Rio
2016) obtuvo el Oro en el recurvo para mujeres.

Línea de Tiro - Copa Juan Enrique Barrios
A new issue of the traditional Juan Enrique Barrios Cup was held at the Albergue
Olímpico in Salinas, Puerto Rico, on July 6-10. Alongside the local archers, a team from
the Dominican Republic took part too.
The list of individual Gold medal winners include three archers from the host nation:
Marla CINTRON (Compound Women), Jean PIZARRO (Compound Men) and Ariel
CRUZ (Recurve Men). Rio Olympic participant Yessica CAMILO from the Dominican
Republic won the Recurve Women’s title.

Championships
Más de mil arqueros participaron en el 132 Campeonato Nacional Outdoor de los Estados
Unidos, que se celebró en Decatur, Alabama, del 13 al 17 de julio. Deportistas de
Canadá, Corea, Eslovenia, Filipinas, Francia, Gran Bretaña, México, Nueva Zelanda y
Taipei acompañaron a los locales en el Campeonato.
La nota más relevante del torneo fue el Record Mundial establecido por Braden

World Record at 718
More than a thousand archers took part in the 132nd USA Outdoor Target National
Championships held in Decatur, Alabama on July 13-17. Athletes from Canada, Chinese
Taipei, France, Slovenia, Korea, the Philippines, Great Britain, New Zealand and Mexico
joined the locals in their Championship.
The highlight of the Championships was the new Compound Men World Record set by
Braden GELLENTHIEN (USA) in a 72 arrow round at 50 meters with a score of 718
(359-359), only two points shy of the maximum.
The list of individual Champions includes: Toja CERNE ELLISON (SLO – Compound
Women), Tate MORGAN (USA – Compound Men), LEE Seung Eun (KOR – Recurve
Women), and Collin KLIMITCHEK (USA – Recurve Men).
USA: Reconocimiento de Honor a Tom Green – Tom Green
receives Distinguished Judge Honor
USA Archery se enorgullece en rendir homenaje a Tom GREEN por su dedicación en el
servicio como juez por más de 30 años y le otorga el Premio de Honor como Juez
Distinguido del 2016. Tom se hizo Juez Nacional en 1988 e Internacional en 1991, y ha
actuado como Presidente del Comité de Oficiales y de Reglas de USA Archery por más
de veinte años.
Recientemente Tom GREEN fue reconocido por la Federación Internacional con el
Premio por el Servicio Destacado a World Archery, a raíz de su retiro como Juez

Internacional luego de haber trabajado en muchos Campeonatos Mundiales de Outdoor
Target, Field e Indoor; y en Juegos Olímpicos. Tom fue miembro del Comité de Field
Archery de la Federación Internacional del 2006 al 2014.
USA Archery is proud to honor Judge Tom GREEN for over 30 years of dedicated judge
service with the 2016 Distinguished Judge honor. GREEN became a National Judge in
1988 and an International Judge in 1991, and has served as Chair of USA Archery’s
Officials and Rules Committee for two decades.
GREEN was recently recognized with the World Archery Judge Outstanding Service
Award as he retired as a World Archery Judge after years serving as a judge for many
World Field Championships, World Indoor Championships, World Cups, World
Championships and Olympic Games. GREEN was a member of the World Archery Field
Committee from 2006 to 2014.

Costa Rica – Tiro con Arco en Juegos Nacionales / Archery part of the
National Games
Por primera vez en la historia del tiro con
arco de Costa Rica se logró la inclusión de
nuestro deporte en los Juegos Nacionales.
Este es un evento de larga tradición en el
país centroamericano, pero nunca había
contado con arcos y flechas en su
programa. En el año 2016 aparecieron
como exhibición, pero ya para los
próximos Juegos será un deporte oficial del
calendario.
El evento se desarrolló a las distancias
oficiales bajo techo, y contó con la
participación de arqueros juveniles y
cadetes de 15 localidades del país.
For the first time in the history of archery
in Costa Rica has our sport been part of the
National Games in this country. The
Games are a traditional sports event in this
Central American country, but archery had
never been included before. In 2016 the
sport of the bows and arrows was an
exhibition discipline, but from 2017 on it
will be part of the official schedule.
The competition was held at the official indoor distances, and was attended by junior and
cadet archers from 15 towns from all over the country.
Edad para competir en los Juegos Olímpicos de la Juventud de 2018 /
Age for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games
Los Juegos Olímpicos de la Juventud se realizarán en Buenos Aires, Argentina, en el año
2018. Podrán competir en estos Juegos solo aquellos arqueros cuyos países hayan
alcanzado plazas en los eventos de clasificación, y que hayan nacido en los años 2001,
2002 y 2003.

El Primer Torneo de Clasificación será el Campeonato Mundial de Juveniles y Cadetes
que se celebrará en la ciudad de Rosario, Argentina en octubre de 2017. Dentro del grupo
de arqueros Cadetes en esta competencia se realizará un selectivo especial. Sólo aquellos
cadetes nacidos en 2001, 2002 y 2003 podrán tomar parte en este selectivo.
The Youth Olympic Games will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2018. Only archers
whose National Federations have won spots in the qualifying events and who were born
in 2001, 2002 or 2003 are eligible to compete.
The First Qualification Tournament will be the Youth World Championships which will
take place in Rosario, Argentina in October 2017. Only Cadet archers born in 2001,
2002 or 2003 will be accepted to compete in the special qualifier to allocate YOG spots.
Nueva reglamentación sobre anotación / A new bylaw
regarding scoring
El Buró Ejecutivo de World Archery aprobó la siguiente reglamentación con relación a
las discrepancias entre la hoja de anotación en papel y la anotación electrónica. Esta
regla se ha estado implementando desde el primero de abril de 2016, pero el texto no
había sido publicado. Por la importancia de la misma, aquí la reproducimos en ambas
lenguas oficiales de WAA.

No hay cambios con relación a los procedimientos para hojas de anotación manuales
Cuando se utiliza anotación electrónica y una hoja de anotación manual se utilizará el siguiente
procedimiento:
o En caso de diferencias en los valores de flechas, claramente la hoja de anotación en papel
tiene la precedencia. En caso de que no se hayan anotado los valores de las flechas en la hoja
de papel, no se otorgarán puntos al arquero.
o Con respecto a la puntuación total y el número total de 10s y Xs, prevalecerán los valores
electrónicos totales, de 10s y de Xs si se cumplen las siguientes condiciones:
 Hay valores en la hoja anotación en papel que permiten realizar la verificación.
 La hoja de anotación ha sido firmada.
 En caso de que no haya sumas de 10s y de Xs en la hoja de anotación en papel, no se
registrarán valores totales de 10s y Xs en la computadora.

En caso de que en el momento de la entrega de la hoja de anotación en papel al equipo
que procesa resultados el resultado total no ha sido sumado, el arquero será
descalificado. (se aplica a individual, equipo y equipo mixto).
Esto quiere decir que si hay discrepancias entre los totales firmados en la hoja de
anotación, y las sumas totales en la computadora, se pueden hacer correcciones en el total
electrónico a partir de comparar los valores individuales de las flechas entre una anotación
y la otra. De existir diferencias en los valores individuales de las flechas entre una
anotación y la otra, prevalecerán los valores en la hoja de papel. Luego de la corrección
de los valores individuales en la anotación electrónica, la suma será la que produzca la
computadora.

A score card without the archer’s signature = disqualification
World Archery Executive Board approved the following bylaw in connection with
discrepancies between the paper scorecard and the electronic scoring. This bylaw has
been implemented since April 1, 2016, but the official text had not been published as such.
Due to the importance of this bylaw, it is being reproduced here in both of WAA official
languages.

No changes to the procedure for manual scorecards.
When one electronic scorecard and one manual scorecard are used the following will apply:
o In case of differences in arrow value(s), clearly the paper scorecard has the precedence. In
case no arrow value has been entered on paper then no points will be given.
o For what concerns the total score and 10s and Xs, the electronic total score,10s and Xs will be
used based on the following conditions:
 A score has been entered on the manual scorecard so verification is possible
 The scorecard has been signed.
 In case no 10s and Xs are entered on the manual scorecard no 10s and X’s are
registered for the athlete since no verification can be done.

In case no total score is entered on the manual scorecard when it is submitted to
the results team, then the athlete should be disqualified (individual/team and mixed
team where applicable)
This means that in case of discrepancies between the total signed in the paper scorecard
and the total produced by the computers, corrections can be made in the electronic total
if upon verification there are differences in the value of individual arrows between the
paper and the electronic score sheet, in which case the values of arrows in the paper
scorecard will prevail. After the correction of the values of individual arrows in the
electronic scorecard the new total produced by the computer will be the valid one.

World Archery ha revocado su licencia para la producción de carátulas de dianas a Bjorn
Bengston Sweden AB. Esta revocación incluye todas las dianas descritas en el Libro No.
2 de Reglas de World Archery en sus artículos 7.2.2 y 8.2.1. Las carátulas de este
fabricante no se pueden utilizar en eventos de Ranking Mundial ni en otros eventos
registrados en el Calendario de World Archery.
World Archery gave notification to Bjorn Bengston Sweden AB that their license for
producing target faces was revoked. This includes all target faces described in World
Archery Constitution and Rules book, Book 2, article 7.2.2 and Book 2, Article 8.2.1.
Target faces from this manufacturer cannot be accepted anymore in World Archery
events, nor World Archery ranking events and competition registered at World Archery
Calendar.

TORNEO RANKING MUNDIAL EN PUERTO RICO /
WORLD RANKING EVENT IN PUERTO RICO
Luego de la cancelación de la Copa Merengue del
año 2017, el Consejo de World Archery Americas
recibió una solicitud de la Federación de Tiro con
Arco de Puerto Rico para que se otorgue a la Copa
Juan Enrique Barrios la condición de evento de
Ranking Mundial para realizarse del 30 de abril al 5
de mayo. La votación de los Miembros del Consejo
se realizó del 20 al 27 de julio, y se acordó aceptar
este evento como válido para Ranking Mundial para
el año 2017.
After the cancellation of the 2017 Copa Merengue, an application from the Archery
Federation of Puerto Rico was submitted to WAA Council requesting that the Juan
Enrique Barrios Cup (April 30 – May 5) be accepted as a World Ranking Event. Council
voted on July 20-27 and agreed to include this event on the list of WREs for 2017.
IGUAZU: ULTIMO RANKING MUNDIAL ANTES DE RIO
/ THE LAST WORLD RANKING EVENT BEFORE RIO
Con la participación de noventa y nueve arqueros de Argentina, Brasil, Bulgaria, Chile,
Colombia, Estados Unidos, Paraguay, Perú, República Dominicana y Venezuela, se
celebró junto a las Cataratas de Iguazú el último torneo de Ranking Mundial antes de los
Juegos Olímpicos. Siete de los participantes dispararon sus últimas flechas de
competencia antes de viajar a Rio de Janeiro para tomar parte en los Juegos.
El colombiano Andrés PILA y el venezolano Elías MALAVE lograron sus mejores
marcas del año en 70 metros con resultados de 664 y 656 respectivamente. Sara LOPEZ,
número 1 en el ranking mundial en compuesto femenino, dominó el torneo en su categoría
con marca en 50 m de 696, un punto más que el ganador del mismo evento entre los
hombres.
En la Ronda de Partidos Individuales, Colombia logró la tripleta en el Compuesto
Masculino con medallas para Daniel MUÑOZ (Oro), Camilo CARDONA (Plata) y el
juvenil Sebastián ARENAS (Bronce). Entre las mujeres de compuesto, Sara LOPEZ
venció en la final a su compatriota Nora VALDEZ con puntuación máxima de 150
puntos. Gisele ESPOSITO de Brasil ganó la medalla de Bronce.
La selección olímpica femenina de Colombia se llevó los tres primeros puestos
individuales con Ana María RENDON, Carolina AGUIRRE y Natalia SANCHEZ en ese

orden. Andrés PILA completó la barrida colombiana de medallas de Oro individuales al
vencer al argentino Fabián CARDENAS (6-4) en el match por oro de recurvo de hombres.
Elías MALAVE (VEN) se adjudicó el bronce.
El único evento por equipos que se celebró fue el mixto de arco recurvo, en el cual los
argentinos resultaron ganadores por encima de dos selecciones mucho más
experimentadas: Colombia (Plata) y Venezuela (Bronce).

Ninety-nine participants from Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, Colombia, the USA,

Ranking Event held before the Olympic Games. The tournament was staged very near
the Iguazu Waterfalls in Argentina. Seven of the competitors shot their last competition
arrows just before flying over to Rio.
